The 56 kilometer long TransOeste corridor plays a large role in mobility and the future development of Barra da Tijuca. Located along Barra’s main thoroughfare, Avenida das Americas, the line originates in the district’s historic center and stretches northwest towards the Santa Cruz neighborhood and train station. The route traverses a variety of characteristics, shifting between high density residential and commercial uses to rural neighborhoods and unbuilt fields and wetlands.

Legend Bus station BRT station Favela Low rise Mid-rise High rise Flooding area
NARRATIVE: Vargens is located at Barra de Tijuca, 40 kilometers far from downtown Rio de Janeiro. It occupies an area of 51.4 square kilometers, almost the same size as Manhattan. Vargens has 10.9 square kilometers of wetland, but it has become the next developing center because of the 2016 Olympic Games. Vargens is facing two issues that conflict with each other, one is the coming urbanism, and the other is the wetland preservation. Currently there are two highway routes able to approach Barra de Tijuca and there is one BRT line now operating. Before 2016, another two BRT lines will operate to service the Olympic as well.

03/ The BELTS URBAN DESIGN STUDIO II - SETTLEMENT SPATIALITIES TAUBMAN COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING - THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
NARRATIVE: The BELTS will encounter four different issues, which are urbanized transportation corridor, undeveloped transportation corridor, green corridor and ecological reservation area. For each condition, our team chooses a typical area, provides a tactic approach which can be applied to the rest of our site. Because of the fragile water condition of the site, urbanization is limited outside the canal system and leaves the center wetland undeveloped. Facing this challenge between the geographical conditions and marketing needs, this proposal is attempt to balance the conflict. The BELTS tries to provide a multi-layer belt to limit the further development for the
sake of wetland preservation. Rather than having a green belt, the BELTS brings high density urban development, two kinds of recreational belts, transit line, bike route and the canal together to provide a vibrate area for Vargens. Other than the BELTS, there is a vertical corridor system. Transportation corridor will connect the upper and lower side, and green corridor connect the mountains with the ocean.

04/ The Recreational - Waterfront Belt URBAN DESIGN STUDIO II - SETTLEMENT SPATIALITIES TAUBMAN COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING - THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
NARRATIVE: The Recreational Waterfront district signals the transition from the urbanized multi-layered belts to the Green Heart, the central conservation area at the core of the site. Anchored by two of the north south connectors, this district incorporates a series of commercial, residential, cultural and recreational uses, and articulates different opportunities to experiencing the ecological reserve. In the Waterfront Belt, the urban grid loosens up: the landscape is set in motion and it creates new ways to inhabit, interact and experience these hybrid grounds.
The Recreational Waterfront articulates a dynamic common ground inspired in the Rio de Janeiro beach culture: attractive and well-designed open spaces that add amenity-rich destinations for residents and visitors alike, facilitate social interaction, and improve ecological biodiversity.

05/ Social housing in the favelas URBAN DESIGN STUDIO I - INFORMAL SETTLEMENT TAUBMAN COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING - THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
NARRATIVE: As a result of both deteriorating living conditions and upcoming events on the world stage such as the 2014 world cup and the 2016 Olympics, Rio’s government is working to improve the quality of life for favela residents through the construction of a series of social housing interventions. In the past, the government constructed conjuntos- large-scale relocation projects similar to the urban renewal projects of the united states. The 1980s saw a new approach as the government focused on upgrading the existing favelas rather than wholesale replacement efforts. This new effort, which has seen even more recent activity as the city prepares for the Olympics, focuses on small-scale on-site upgrading without forcing resident to relocate.
