As the weather cools down, our Gallery heats up with two stunning exhibitions reflecting our Gold Coast beach culture. Celebrated ar tist Vernon Ah Kee pushes aside conventional ideas of beach culture in cantchant, and Peter Walker presents his unique wooden surf boards alongside Gerry Wedd’s surf and sea ceramics which reference ocean legends and the surf world. Comedy fans will be thrilled they don’t have to travel to Brisbane anymore with this year’s Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow finally stopping on the Gold Coast! See the best comedians from the world-famous festival on Tuesday 31 May. Following the success of the first show in our Children’s Series, The Gruffalo, we follow up with the much-loved Graeme Base storybook brought to life on stage - My Grandma Lived in Gooligulch. This Australian musical adventure will surprise and delight children aged 5 to 9 years. The Regional Stages program has presented some excellent theatrical experiences so far, and now presents two more performances in June. Appalling Behaviour is an unforgettable journey into the darkest corners of the seedy Parisian underworld and Lucid Dance’s Dancing with Bach is a contemporary ballet and cello work exploring the mysterious life of Bach. WELCOME

CANTCHANT – VERNON AH KEE

7 May – 26 Jun GALLERY 2 Brisbane based ar tist Vernon Ah Kee takes on the iconic subject of the beach, casting a critical eye on its special role in forming Australian identity. Cantchant pushes aside our conventional idea of the beach as a place of leisure, relaxation and fun, and presents it instead as a cultural battleground. The installation includes painted surf boards depicting nor thern Queensland rainforest shield designs, dramatic wall texts and a spectacular three-screen video installation featuring Aboriginal pro-surfer Dale Richards gliding with extraordinary grace through the waves. Ah Kee also shows his own relatives attempting to mimic the surf lifestyle in Surfers Paradise but looking hopelessly out of place. The Warumpi Band’s classic hit Stompin’ Ground accompanies the images. This installation was presented at the 2009 Venice International Biennale. An IMA Touring Exhibition

28 May – 10 Jul GALLERY 1 Take a fresh look at surfing culture with these two distinct but connected exhibitions. Furniture maker and designer Peter Walker presents a new series of beautifully-crafted wooden surf boards and ar tist Gerry Wedd presents ceramics referencing both ancient and contemporary myths and legends of the perils of the sea and the underbelly of the surf world. Walker is a Sydney-born surfer who divides his time between Adelaide and working as Associate Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design in New York. Always fascinated by hand skills and fine craftsmanship, Walker’s awareness of the complexity of surf board performance and design led him to star t making his own wooden surf boards, embellished with the work of leading Australian contemporary ar tists. Gerry Wedd also knows surf culture well, winning state titles in the 1970s and he continues to surf off the breaks near his home of Por t Elliot in South Australia. He presents a monumental new group of urns, a series of tiles, plates and even thongs made with the traditional look of blue and white ware but full of contemporary references.
