Joseph Banks and the Flora of the Australian East Coast Joseph Banks accompanied James Cook on his first Pacific voyage in 1768. When they returned to England in 1771 some 1,300 sketches and watercolours of botanical specimens and landscape views had been completed by botanical ar tist, Sydney Parkinson. Banks employed five ar tists to complete Parkinson’s watercolours and 18 engravers to cut copper printing plates to publish the works, but the publication never eventuated. In 1980, Alecto Historical Editions and the Natural History Museum, London, began work to publish the works in 35 parts comprising 743 botanical drawings, 337 featuring Australian plants. Namatjira to Now Alber t Namatjira became one of Australia’s best-loved artists and this exhibition will profile his work and his creative legacy. The exhibition explores the beginnings of the Hermannsburg School in the mid-1930s through the early watercolour landscape paintings of Albert Namatjira, and the continued work of a small group of artists, some of whom continued to work in his style and others who developed startling new representations of their land. Alongside these paintings the exhibition also features Hermannsburg pottery with their bold and quirky decoration made from local clays. 13 Nov - 30 Jan Weekdays 10.00am - 5.00pm Sat/Sun 11.00am - 5.00pm venue Gallery 2 cost Free DATE time
