For the staff and volunteers of Rye Harbour Nature Reserve S.M.
For my dad – ‘Martin, the kingfisher’ A.W.

A rush of feathers.

A flicker of blue lightning.
Grandpa’s face was smiling, bright like the spring sun. His eyes were sparkling like the river.

“A kingfisher!”
“How did you spot it, Grandpa?” I asked.

“Listen, then watch. And keep very still.” Grandpa pointed.
I followed his finger . . .
“There!”
Flying straight as a dart over the ripple of glass.

A small bird.
Its beak long and sharp. Its wings shining like jewels. Its breast golden-red, like a sunset.
The bird shot like an arrow through the water –down into the crystal green river.
