MUST VISIT MUST GET A SHOT

If you’re after a caffeine hit in Soho, London, just follow the coffee aroma emanating from Berwick Street. Joining the popular Flat White and Foxcroft & Ginger coffee shops along this lively street are Damson & Co and Apostrophe. The former is a thoroughly British affair with a locally sourced menu and coffee roasted in East London and delivered to the shop by bicycle. The latter serves up a strong and failsafe, Italian stallion of a coffee. Either way, you’ll get your hit in style. berwickstreetlondon.co.uk

MUST DINE x 3 Take out your diary and pick an occasion worth celebrating or better still, just make up a reason for visiting three Michelin-starred chef Heinz Beck’s restaurant Apsleys. Go straight for the wine-paired seven-course tasting menu, that way you won't miss out on such magnificent creations as scallops with a pea cream, spring vegetables and San Daniele ham powder, the burst-of-flavour carbonara fagottelli pasta parcels or the exquisite turbot with curry flavouring and a light pesto sauce. Each dish, bright, light and precise, and enhanced by the most perfectly matched of wines, is a joy for both the eyes and palate. And set amongst a stunningly plush and elegant surrounding, this makes for the most indulgent and memorable of dining experiences. Surely that must be reason enough for celebrating? There aren't many things more satisfying than sitting down to a plateful of some glorious British food. This is something Sir Terence Conran and Peter Prescott know well with the introduction of their latest deli-come-cafe venture. With a locally sourced menu and some of the most failsafe offerings known to man, think fish and chips, steak and ale pie and gammon with colcannon mash, Albion at Neo Bankside is one place you can return to time and time again if you want the British basics done particularly well. Plus it's an early ‘til late operation so you can drop by whenever the hunger pangs take hold.

One place to check out soon in Soho soon is Japanese-Peruvian hybrid Chotto Matte. Serving up the best of Nikkei cuisine, you can expect a fusion of the two cultures at every turn. There will be a cocktail bar offering various twists on pisco and sake, a raw bar overseen by a sushi master (once chef to the Emperor of Japan), along with plenty of dining space for dishes like BBQ pork belly with a nashi pear salsa and grilled baby chicken with spicy pomegranate salsa (above). High-energy, diverse and urban, this place will feel right at home when it opens.

BREAKFAST HEALTHY at Le Pain Quotidien Perfect for a light yet thoroughly wholesome breakfast. If you want the basics done well, this is the place to make your stop. Think fresh, organic breads, fruit-topped crunchy granola, creamy porridge and egg done two ways with sides of prosciutto and smoked salmon. Its latest restaurant in London is now open at 2 St. Paul’s Churchyard, EC4M 8AP. lepainquotidien.co.uk

HANGOUT CENTRAL at Imli Street Forego the usual rushed grab-and-go breakfast and treat yourself to a hot, freshly-made sit-down instead. LILY KAMPER Textile & Accessories Designer

A/W 2013 collection

Being a graduate is tough.

Working towards that first break is even tougher. But one person, whose talent for creating achingly cool and covetable accessories and has been in demand pretty much since the day she left the Royal College of Art, is Lily Kamper. After plenty of exhibitions including Scoop International at the Saatchi Gallery, London and Premier Vision, Paris, along with commissions for Nike and trend-forecaster WGSN, Lily is now producing her A/W 2013 jewellery collection. With a penchant for Perspex and dyes and an inclination for

combining unusual materials, Lily’s vision has strong commercial appeal for today's highly design-conscious market. To create her jewellery, small blocks of Perspex, Corian and brass (which are then gold and silver plated) are turned meticulously on a lathe. The Perspex pieces are dip-dyed to create an ombre effect and the handmade process means that every piece is entirely unique. The collection was inspired by the structures of pillars, temples and pyramids and by the works of Dan Flavin, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Philipp Schaerer, Josef Schulz and Peter Alexander.

The architectural nods are clear, resulting in an eye-catching collection of beautifully sculpted pieces, visually striking from every angle, that stand as works of art in their own right. As an increasingly successful emerging designer, her knowledge is being sought as a judge at this year's WGSN Global Fashion Awards, joining a distinguished panel of fashion influencers that include Giles Deacon, Rankin, Stephen Jones and Livia Firth. How's that for good company? Lily Kamper’s collection is available now at Liberty. lilykamper.com WWW.NOTED-MAGAZINE.COM

Oh to reverse in a matter of months what nature has done to our skin with every passing year, that’s quite a mission we’ve set for ourselves. It’s also quite the mission for anti-ageing products to produce the results they claim but one product putting in a stellar performance is this La Prairie Cellular Power Serum. By re-energising the skin and reawakening dormant cells that with age, have lost their energy and capacity to work effectively, the serum kicks back into action the skin’s natural antioxidant defence network – the most effective way of fighting ageing free radicals. With cells on high alert to environmental aggressors, the skin is better armed to defend itself whilst behind the scene, the daily dose of power gets to work on repairing existing damage. With such potent and exotic ingredients as giant knotweed, blue microalgae, heart leaf globe daisy and Swiss snow algae, this high-performance, supercharger for the skin will lighten your pocket a fair bit but it will also do the same for those years off your face. £322, available at La Prairie counters nationwide

An expert and an insight into their craft

NUZ SHUGAA The Bespoke Facialist There's a reason why people keep coming back to Nuz Shugaa, many of whom are absolute in their loyalty - she produces outstanding skin results. Using only natural therapies to treat everything from blemishes to ageing skin, Nuz is an authority on natural skincare and as such, she is one of the most indemand facialists in the UK.

Here, Nuz shares her secrets…

MAKE IT PERSONAL “Creating a bespoke facial is to pay attention to what skin needs and what it lacks and to make a difference with just one treatment, along with advice on maintaining it afterwards.”

STAY AWAY FROM BOTOX AND FILLERS “Relying on these quick-fixes will only make your own skin lazy. Try to avoid parabens, artificial preservatives and chemicals as they can thin the epidermis and unbalance the pH level of the skin the key to a clear complexion.”

“I use and blend organic and natural ingredients sourced from all over the world, from oils and antioxidant-rich super foods to nightingale droppings (great for brightening skin). It's important to strike the right balance between knowing which ingredients will suit each skin type and how far you can push the results.”

“I suffered with breakouts as a teenager so keeping my skin clean is vital. I always double cleanse and apply an organic facial oil in the evening. I massage my skin nightly to improve circulation and I try to fit in a facial every month as well.”

NUZ’S THREE TIPS FOR A GLOWING COMPLEXION

“Believing in what you do is important. I know I can treat any skin condition” HOW I DO IT

MY OWN REGIME

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE CONFIDENCE “Believing in what you do is important. I know I can treat any skin condition and have improving results each time, which helps me to grow as a skincare expert and enables me to become better at what I do.”

1. The eyes are prone to suffering from dark circles and puffiness so invest in a good eye cream.

2. Avoid heavy daily makeup - let the skin breathe. Treat yourself to a tinted moisturizer (or BB or CC cream) with added sunscreen protection. 3. Supplements and vitamins are great for the skin and can improve certain skin problems in a month.

BEAUTY

UP the VOLUME

Turn

Whilst some people are blessed with naturally full and voluminous hair, most have to put in some serious work to enhance what little they have. Here, we break down exactly what you need to give your hair back its oomph.

WHY THE LIMP HAIR? Nick Irwin, TIGI Global Creative Director explains, “Certain hair types, particularly very fine, thin hair, are prone to limpness as they are lacking in natural body. Equally, applying too much serum or gel will also make the hair limp, as will hot, humid weather.”

HOW TO ACHIEVE MORE VOLUME Nick reveals, “One way to permanently improve limp hair is to add colour. The chemicals present in hair colour can add texture and actually make the hair appear thicker and shinier.”

TECHNIQUE “To get additional volume when drying your own hair, stick your head upside down to get root lift and when blow-drying use a large, round brush as this will help lift the roots and create volume in the hair.”

PRODUCTS Look for products that specifically add texture and volume. “Think mousses, spray-in texturisers, sugar dusts, sea-salt sprays and dry shampoo.”

COMING CLEAN

Cleansing - it's the most important part of a skincare routine yet one of the easiest to get wrong. So here, we've created a simple guide so you’ll always get it right and do it well.

WHY CLEANSE? Because the secret to healthy, glowing skin is through daily cleansing. Wiping the slate clean ensures that the bacteria and impurities that build up at the end of the day are removed - think excess sebum, sweat, dead skin cells and make-up, along with everything else you’ve touched your face with using unclean hands during the day.

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR CLEANSER HEAVY MAKE-UP TRY cleansing oils

£14.99, Boots

Oils are really effective at melting away make-up on the skin. When water is added, the emulsion helps to wash the impurities away quickly and easily whilst still leaving the skin soft and nourished. RECOMMENDATIONS: •Superfacialist by Una Brennan Rose Miracle Makeover Facial Oil •L'Oreal Paris Skin Perfection 15 Second Miracle Cleansing Oil SENSITIVE SKIN TRY cleansing waters, milk cleansers

£7.99, Superdrug

£18, twelvebeauty.com

A gentle cleanse for the skin, they usually contain natural ingredients and are often alcohol and fragrance-free to minimise skin irritation. RECOMMENDATIONS: •Twelve Purifying Cleansing Beauty Cream •Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micelle Solution

£9.99, escentual.com

ON THE GO TRY face wipes Great for removing make-up when you’re travelling or just too tired to cleanse properly. Keep in your handbag for when the occasion calls. RECOMMENDATIONS: •Simple Kind To Skin Cleansing Facial Wipes •MAC Wipes

BEAUTY £36, aromatherapyassociates.com

DEHYDRATED SKIN TRY creams and balms

Usually contains a high concentration of oils to nourish and moisturise the skin to leave it wonderfully soft. Apply at least twice to ensure make-up and impurities are thoroughly removed. RECOMMENDATIONS: •Aromatherapy Associates Soothing Cleansing Balm •Champneys Spa Skin Super Rich Cleansing Balm

£13, Boots

PROBLEM-SOLVING TRY washes, gels, foams

£58, Harvey Nichols

Wash-off cleansers give an immediate feeling of freshness but due to the variation in formulas, always look at the active ingredients to see which is most suited to your skin. RECOMMENDATIONS: •L'Occitane Immortelle Precious Cleansing Foam •Sjal Balans Deep Pore Cleanser

£18.50, uk.loccitane.com

TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS Cosmetologist PEDRO CATALA says:

Facialist DEBBIE THOMAS says:

“Dry your face with a clean towel so you don’t undo the good you have done and pat rather than rub.

“All cleansers can be massaged onto damp skin, then rinsed off with water or removed with a flannel or muslin cloth for more exfoliation.

The skin exfoliates itself naturally every 28 days, so if you have the cleansing step right, you don’t need to get obsessed with scrubbing.

If you use a cleansing gadget like a Clarisonic, only use it three times a week as too much use can over-cleanse the skin, causing irritation.

Extremes of temperature water can be a shock to the skin, removing natural oils from the skin too quickly so always use lukewarm water.”

You only need to double cleanse if you have make-up on, not every night.”

TREATMENT ON TRIAL The Power Cleanse – The HydraFacial If only we had a device that simply sucked the dirt out of our pores for the perfect deep cleanse, now that would be pretty impressive. Well, that pretty much sums up the HydraFacial, a treatment which cranks the cleansing routine up a few notches. The action lies in a multitasking spiral tip which simultaneously dispels ingredients to help loosen the skin so the spiral edges can push against it to dislodge dirt, sebum and dead skin cells, whilst the vacuum vortex sucks it all away to leave the skin thoroughly cleansed and exfoliated. If you're after a relaxing, sleep-inducing facial, this is not it. The scraping sensation created by the suction and spiral tip is unnerving and feels especially delicate along the cheeks. The extraction by suction, on the other hand, was surprisingly enjoyable, particularly in the congested T-Zone and around the nose. As far as extractions go, this was the most satisfying and least painful I've ever experienced. The skin is then topped up with an antioxidant and hyaluronic acid infusion which leaves the skin beautifully plump and supple. I can’t ever recall having skin this baby-soft. Immediately post-treatment, the skin is naturally a little red but this soon dissipates. The feeling the following morning is punch-the-air joy as the skin still looks and feels wonderfully smooth, refined and positively glowing with clarity. Nothing beats feeling as though your pores have been sucked clean other than seeing the results reflected on your skin, which is exactly what the HydraFacial delivers on both counts.
