The Art of Fragrance Salvador Dali and the founding of a fragrance house

The Dali Fabulous Collection

BEAUTY

Monsieur Givory on founding Les Parfums Salvador Dali with the surrealist artist himself

S

alvador Dali once wrote in the 1930s,

‘Among the five senses, smell is unquestionably the one that best gives the idea of immortality.’ This rationale could explain why the fragrance house bearing his name, Les Parfums Salvador Dali continues to flourish long after his death in 1989. At the helm is Monsieur Givory, who, when in 1981 decided to action his idea of creating a perfume of art, approached Dali to develop the concept, using his artwork and inspiration as a basis for producing such an item. Monsieur Givory tells us that the process of creating a perfume isn’t at all different to creating a piece of art. ‘As a matter of fact a perfumer creating a fragrance and blending essential oils follows the same creative process as a painter having his colours merged into one another to achieve a painting. When a painter starts a painting he knows whether he wants to do a still life, a landscape, a portrait or an abstract. Then he starts putting colours together and adds, retracts and remixes them. When creating a fragrance, you go through the same process with olfactive directions that are following your inspiration. The development of a fragrance is done touch by touch in the same vein and thinking of the ingredients according to the ambiance we want to recreate.’ In other words, creating a fragrance is simply another form of artistic expression and Dali offered him just that. ‘He was a one of a kind artist. He gave us a guidance to creativity, non-conformism and artistic image.’ For the house’s first fragrance, Dali took inspiration from his painting Apparition of the Face of Aphrodite of Knidos. He focused on the lips and nose of the goddess of love and beauty, making a sketch of what would

“Perfume has a magic which should be saved through creativity and personality” later form his first perfume bottle. The fragrance launched in 1983 as a tribute to his wife and muse, Gala. ‘All what he did, created and thought was in one way or another dedicated to Gala.’ Of the scent itself, Monsieur Givory talks of his surprise at Dali’s olfactive directions, ‘He chose two flowers, a rose, Gala’s favourite flower, and Jasmine, the flower he frequently wore above his ear when painting. I could have expected anything eccentric from this multi-faceted genius, but that choice of the two most basic flowers of perfumery was reflecting his inclination to classical art, as his favourite painters were Raphael, Vermeer and Velazquez.’ Monsieur Givory believes that a fragrance should stir an emotion and please the wearer, ‘The same way when listening to music, looking at a painting or reading a book. Those emotions are very personal to each person who buys a fragrance. As the

Italians say, ‘No e bello lo que e bello, ma e bello lo que piace’ - ‘Is not beautiful what is beautiful but is beautiful what pleases.’ But Monsieur Givory feels both the artistic element of the bottle and the fragrance contained within are equally important, ‘A perfume is like a person you meet for the first time, you are attracted first by their appearance and then, when they start talking, it confirms the first impression (or not). It is exactly the same for a perfume, you are attracted by its look for the first buy and you keep it because you like its fragrance and the ones you love like it too!’ Finally, Monsieur Givory talks about the banality of ‘numerous new or so called products put out every year’ and tells us that the concept of perfume should be more precious, ‘Perfume has a magic which should be saved through creativity and personality,’ a magic which the fragrance house has running through its veins. www.parfums-salvadordali.com

Hair oils are now a staple in many a hair routine and it’s easy to see why. “Oils are great for hydrating hair, adding shine and reducing frizz,” says award-winning hairstylist Jamie Stevens (hairbyjamiestevens.co.uk). Ideal for dry and damaged hair due to the concentration of goodness contained within the oils, we’ve come to appreciate “the nourishing benefits they can have on anyone with hair that lacks moisture. Even those with greasy hair can often have dry ends, which oil-based treatments can improve.” Used sparingly on freshly-washed hair, it really speeds up the blow drying process whilst leaving behind super-silky, bouncy and glossy results.

SKIN During the winter, our skin is exposed almost daily to an extreme environmental cycle of unrelenting rain, ice-cold air, artic winds and roastingly-warm indoor heating. Cosmetologist Pedro Catala says ‘This combination leads to a rapid dehydration of the skin’s cells leaving the skin structure very dry and vulnerable. If you’re prone to sensitive or reactive skin, winter weather can often exacerbate it.’ This is why it is so important that you invest well in your winter

Catala advises ‘Whilst lighter textures are more suitable during the summer to compensate the skin’s excessive perspiration, you should use richer products for the winter as they create a stronger barrier against environmental effects.’ He also recommends using nonfoaming rinse-off cleansing milks and creams, ‘They are the least harsh and less likely to completely strip off the skin’s natural barrier.’ Exfoliation should absolutely continue to be a regular part of

Mission: Possible Design shopping in some of the world’s best hotels and restaurants right at your fingertips ABOVE AND RIGHT: Maison Moschino, Milan. Just one of the many hotels you can ‘shop’ at

‘We once received a request for a painting featured in the film The Thomas Crown Affair. We had to politely point out to the client that this was a very famous painting that belonged to a gallery!’

If you have ever stayed at a hotel

or dined in a restaurant and fallen in love with a quirky chair or a statement light fixture, you needn’t scour the earth to track it down yourself, there is an online service that will do it all for you. Created by Isabel Rutland, Discover & Deliver (discoverdeliver.com), allows you to ‘shop’ the very pieces you’ve seen in some of the world’s best design hotels and restaurants yourself, from Claridge’s in London to the Mondrian Soho in New York to The Water House in Shanghai. ‘These hotels are like the catwalks for the furniture industry,’ says Rutland. The concept was born after the realisation that much of Rutland’s inspiration when trying to furnish her own home (on a budget), came from some of the hotels she had stayed in herself. ‘Being able to bring in accents of design enables people who can’t afford a whole sweep of interior changes, to get a step closer to the

“These hotels are like catwalks for the furniture industry” design they would want in an ideal world. It is about being inspired by the design of the locations you go to and using key pieces in the decoration of your home, which simply accents the living space with the ‘feel’ of somewhere you have visited.’ The website also provides information on the designers and manufacturers involved in the pieces they sell, ‘People love to invest in the provenance and story behind a piece.’ But if you can’t find what you’re after, the company welcomes requests for them to source it and makes it available for you to buy. It can be a challenge and they do well with it but their skills do stop short of daylight robbery.

A haven for the designconscious, the company now works with over 100 hotels, bars and restaurants in over 20 destinations globally and in excess of 100 designers and manufacturers. They are constantly looking to add new locations to their portfolio and have recently started collaborating with private chalets in Verbier, Zermatt and St Moritz, so you are in for a treat. Never has it been easier to bring great design into your own home. All pieces available from discover-deliver.com
