Scratch Course: Getting ready for the new Computing Curriculum What is SCRATCH?
Scratch is a programming language that makes it easy for pupils to create their own interactive stories, animations, games, music and art. Scratch is free and available as a download or as a webtool. A new version for download is expected soon. Scratch programs are created by linking blocks of code together. Blocks are colour coded to reflect their purpose making it easier to identify them.
What can you do in SCRATCH?
Creating programs by moving characters on different backgrounds is really easy. I am confident that this will be achieved by all. Differentiation is easily achieved by providing challenges for the more or less able within the lesson objectives. In addition to creating their own programs, pupils will benefit from adapting those written by others and correcting errors.
New Computing Curriculum Readiness The new Computing Curriculum requires pupils at KS2 to “design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals.....” Also to “solve problems by decomposing them into smaller parts” Also to “detect and correct errors in algorithms and programs” Scratch will be an essential software tool to enable you to deliver the new Computing Curriculum. On this course we shall: • Explore Scratch so that you can confidently create a game of your own. • Use Scratch creatively to achieve each of the three objectives highlighted above • Leave with a scheme of work for Scratch that has been partially adapted for your school
