THE TRUTH IS THAT RED TIDE KILLS
So we lose a few fish... no big deal, right? While many of the algal blooms are harmless, if the conditions are right, the situation can become deadly. Harmful algal bloom (commonly known as “red tide�) affects all parties involved. Manatees and shellfish suffer from this poisoning. Other marine life are also affected, such as crabs and fish suffocate in the oxygen-depleted water.
Research has also shown that the same brevotoxins that kill manatees have also shown to have an effect on humans. We all have a role in the ecosystem whether we are aware of it or not. This means that we must respond to the needs of the entire system and learn how our actions affect others down the line. They are counting on you.
