CH1 SACRAMENTO RAILYARDS Sacramento, CA | Senior Capstone The Sacramento Railyards holds a historical significance as it was once a booming center for the First Transcontinental Railroad. It catered to the users of that time, mainly providing transportation for people and goods. Today, the city has plans to transform the 244 acre site into a mixed-use development and unlike the town in the 1860’s, residents now are demanding for walkable cities.

Design Process
IDENTIFY LAND USE
Begin by identifying the different types of land use in Sacramento’s proposed plan.
LOCATE CENTRAL POINTS
In each zone, locate the central point. For larger and asymmetrical spaces, locate two points.
Masterplan
mission statement Use the Railyards site to address the challenges Sacramento faces with soft mobility by establishing a walkable urban thoroughfare to & through pedestrian-oriented spaces.
CONNECT ALL CENTRAL POINTS Stitch all zones together with a connective path.
ISOLATE ZONES
Remove outer land use colors for better visualization.
IDENTIFY THIRD SPACES
Along the connective path, identify areas that can be activated as third spaces. Categorize each of these spaces into 4 themes.
ESTABLISH CIRCULATION PATH
Establish the main circulation route for pedestrian thoroughfare throughout the Railyards.
Third Spaces the open gallery Diversify the types of activities and users by providing flexible spaces. Design Decisions • •
elevated park structure with viewing platforms provide a “formal entryway” into Railyards site
the rustic tracks Preserve the historical character of the Railyards while simultaneously modernizing the site for today’s users. Design Decisions • • •
historical preservation through art installations retain on-site materials open plaza
the greenbelt Address Sacramento’s lack of shade trees/structures during the hot Summer months. Design Decisions •
Introduce shade trees along Vista Park to surrounding districts
the gardens Preserve not just the historical architecture that represents Sacramento’s bigger identity as a Railroad city, but also the people who were displaced in the 1900’s the Chinese immigrants who contributed to the building of the railroad.

CH2 MARIPOSA CREEK PARKWAY Maripsoa, CA | Group Project The Master Plan for Mariposa Creek Parkway, a collaboration between Mariposa County and WRT a design firm envisions the trail as a recreational site, transportation resource, and an opportunity for economic development. My design expands on this Master Plan with a strong emphasis on habitat conservation and enhancement by establishing a finalized planting plan for a portion of the trail.
OBJECTIVES FAUNA
FLORA
COMMUNITY GROWTH
Understand the ecology of Mariposa Creek Parkway to aesthetically enhance the habitat values and experience in the landscape, while simultaneously promoting the wildlife population and plant health.
Use California Native plants specific to Mariposa County that adapts well to the Riparian Woodland areas. Strategically, in quantity and spatially, group plants to frame the space for minimal recreational use and ease of maintenance.
Build a strong relationship between community members, tourists, and the creek within the parkway, while respecting the boundaries of the wildlife and its habitat.
NATIVE FLORA & FAUNA Special-status Species Special-status species drive the design for the Mariposa Creek Planting Plan. Selected plants are arranged in layers that would help minimize disturbance to the wildlife.
Plant Palette The planting plan is composed of welladapted Riparian Woodland, California Natives specific to Mariposa County. Plants are arranged into 3 different layers: trees (scattered), shrubs (ground-cover to tall), and forbs (strategy to suppress the growth of invasive species).
Masterplan
TREES LAYER
SHRUBS LAYER
FORBS LAYER
A NEW ECOSYSTEM The planting design for Mariposa Creek Parkway shall enhance the riparian habitat for special-status species, address maintenance and safety concerns, and allow pedestrian flow and recreational activities to occur within the site with minimal disturbance to the wildlife.
Successional Model 2020
Invasive species are removed with prescribed fires. Species located by water’s edge, where more nutrients are available for plant growth, will be first priority.
2040
The flow of and width of the creek increases with the removal of the Himalayan Blackberry.
2060
The creek becomes an ecological hub for specialstatus species and a recreational site for the community.

CH3 CASTROVILLE OAKS Castroville, CA | Group Project Castroville, also more infamously known as “The Artichoke of the Center”, is located in Monterey County and is known as one of the biggest producers of agricultural goods. Since 1863, the town has built itself to sustain from 900 residents to over 6,000 today . It is highly populated by individuals of Hispanic background, with many working in the agricultural industry. The purpose of this project is to study the relationship between the people and the landscape, and how we can use these findings to enhance the design for Castroville Oaks, a CHISPA housing development.
Site A
Vision for Castroville Oaks
1
Enhance the physical and cultural identity to foster safe, inclusive, and well-connected spaces.
Site B
2
Strengthen community connections and engagement through ritualistic events in under-utilized spaces.
3
Empower capacity building processes to open gateways for future opportunities
Layers Of Castroville Oaks The design focus is the central community area of Castroville Oaks in Site B. As with many of CHISPA’s multi-family housing developments, this site offers another version of a “community center”. However, unlike the indoor center CHISPA is familiar with, our site offers an outdoor version of this space.

CH4 ALBANY BULB Albany, CA | Group Project Albany Bulb, a 31 acre site, is a cultural landscape that originally began as a landfill site. Today, residents use the site for passive recreation and art exploration. The purpose of the Albany Bulb Master Plan is to assess the current state of the site to determine how the space can achieve its potential as a scarce green space in the crowded metropolitan Bay Area. Redesign of the site uses elements of imageability—the ability of a place and its visual impacts to stimulate mental imaging and processing— to enhance the user experience.

VEGETATION MANAGEMENT
Albany Bulb is overpopulated with invasive species that obstruct views and pathways. With the removal of invasive species and thick blankets of vegetation, main and secondary trails become more visible.
SITE SAFETY & HAZARD MITIGATION
Structures such as Mad Marc’s Castle pose the greatest risks to the public, as tourists regularly visit these areas. To ensure safety, it is necessary to install guardrails and remove construction debris in high risk areas.
ENHANCEMENT OF THE USER EXPERIENCE Redesign of the site uses elements of imageability—the ability of a place and its visual impact to stimulate mental imaging and processing—to enhance the user experience. PATHS the channels along which the observer customarily, occassionally, or potentially moves
DISTRICTS distinctive in contrast with the rest of the place and recognizable as having some common, identifying character

CH5 GRØNVOLD PARK Oslo, Norway | Group Project Grønvold Park is historically an industrial site located in the neighborhood of Hovinbyen— one of Oslo’s largest urban development areas. Residen tial development is becoming more promine nt, especially with the increase of immigrant families moving into the area. This mixed use area, which will soon include a new elementary school, office buildings, and residential units, addresses a need for more green and public spaces for the growing, diverse community.
Design Process CIRCULATION Locating surrounding buildings and entry points and identifying the users are allows us to predict the circulation happening in the site.
SPACES After the circulation analysis, we identify the negative spaces in the site. Spaces along the edges are typically larger. More movement in the central area breaks the site into smaller, fragmented spaces.
DEFINING Spaces along the edges are larger, more open, and can be used for recreation or congregation. As users move towards the center, spaces become more intimate and enclosed.
MISSION STATEMENT The design for Grønvold Park features walkable urban thoroughfares, diverse destinations areas for recreation and play, and includes interactive elements to help c reate an invigorating and vibrant common ground for the users. The park modernizes and energizes a historically industrial place by providing a plethora of innovative and interactive elements that the public can engage with.
THE PLAYGROUND Providing diverse spaces and unconventional play areas for children encourages exploration and interaction with the built environment. The Playground includes “through, over, under” elements such as mounds, tunnels, and ground trampolines—all which maximizes the space and experience.
THE PLAZA The Plaza encourages community gatherings and congregation—all while promoting sustainable agriculture and creating access to fresh food. Providing spaces for people to gather helps establish a connection between community members. Community gardens, additionally, gives r esidents an opportunity to take ownership and responsibility of their neighborhood.
THE SKYWALK The Skywalk is one of the most important nodes in the space where multiple pathways connect to. While the skywalk allows users to walk “over” the site and partake in activities occurring in The Amphitheater, it also allows bicycle users to pass under the structure and through to another space.
