Permanent cosmetics are a type of cosmetic tattooing where microscopic particles of pigment are infused into the reticular layer of skin and are visible through the upper layers. However, the pigment is placed at a depth of 0.5mm, which is much shallower than a tattoo. The equipment used is also much more refined, quieter and less traumatic to the skin than traditional tattooing, so the procedure is no more painful than having your eyebrows tweezed. Plus, the pigments used are designed to blend naturally with the skin. Although the procedure is known as permanent, the nature of the pigments and the depth to which they are infused means that fading will occur over time. The colour appears a little darker for the first few days but soon lightens and a re-touch is usually necessary after one to three months to achieve the perfect result. A colour boost every twelve to eighteen months will also keep your enhancements looking immaculate. Although permanent cosmetics fade slightly, they should still be considered irreversible, so make sure that you go to a qualified, skilled practitioner such as Karen.

“I can make people look like they've had a mini face-lift” Q How did you become involved in permanent cosmetics? I was first introduced to permanent cosmetics 15 years ago when a friend of mine had an eyeliner enhancement. After seeing the amazing results I began my research in America – I was so impressed that I trained there for almost 12 years, developing my techniques, learning new skills, researching products & pigments… you name it, I did it!

Q What’s the most rewarding aspect of permanent cosmetic for you? 12 years ago a friend of mine was diagnosed with cancer, she lost all her hair including her eyebrows through chemotherapy and asked me to help her. I designed her a new set of areolae and eyebrows and it was a very rewarding and moving experience. I still carry those feelings with me with each procedure I undertake.
Q Aren't clients worried permanent cosmetics will hurt? I think anybody can feel apprehensive before they have any treatment, from removal of unwanted hair to a visit to the dentist. Actually the pain is minimal and I do use a cream, which helps ease even the mildest sensation.
Q How have things changed since then? I am constantly researching and developing not only my techniques but also my treatment range and the tools I use in my procedures. I strive for perfection in everything I do and I want my clients to have the most natural effects possible. The difference in pigment range, equipment and techniques is stunning from my beginnings 12 years ago. I am recognised for my brow techniques - not only do they appear natural, I can make people look like they've had a mini face-lift! Q Wow! How do you make a client look like they've had a mini face-lift? The secret really is a good eyebrow enhancement. I pioneered the 3D hairstroke brow effect in the UK – the results are just fabulous.
