Welcome to the Urban Suburban Film Festival Good evening, and welcome to the 1st annual Urban Suburban Film Festival. We want to thank everyone for attending this evening, and showing their support to the various artists who have a passion for filmmaking. As mentioned, Philadelphia is the 5th largest media market in the country, and while it has numerous film festivals, it doesn’t have any specific to the minority community. Part of the mission for our festival is not only to make it “all about the film”, but to also provide an opportunity for entrepreneurs and businesses associated with the event, to collaborate with talented individuals and increase their awareness in the community. We not only wanted to answer question of “why another film festival”? We were committed to providing access to information for aspiring filmmakers, by way of marketing, financing, distribution, and more. We were also committed to providing opportunities to meet leaders in the film industry, via actors, actresses, casting directors, and more. Throughout the process we were grateful to get some many good film submissions, which highlighted the diversity of our event. So as we kick off the festival with some extraordinary films, and rewarding workshops, please enjoy yourselves, and once again, thank you for coming out. On behalf of the Urban Suburban Film Festival, we would like to thank you for your support, participation, and submission of your film. It was our distinct pleasure to showcase your work, and give recognition to a talented artist. As we move forward to future events, we welcome the opportunity to collaborate with you again. We wish you continued success in your future endeavors and thank you for your support. Sincerely,
Andrew Harmon Andrew Harmon Creative Director
Thank you and we’ll see you in 2010! Change is evitable. How appropriate that 2009 symbolized significant historical change. Within every moment in time, change will occur regardless of location. It was our goal to change the landscape in which film festivals are viewed in the City of Philadelphia. Our primary goal was to focus on the artist and secondarily create a third major option with the existing film festival arena. I think we accomplished both of these lofty tasks with the help of every filmmaker and producer who graciously submitted their work to our inaugural film festival. I cannot say enough to thank the 100 plus filmmakers that submitted their work to be displayed at the Urban Suburban Film Festival. I love the City of Philadelphia. From the onset, it was our mission, despite the economy to focus our event, your festival and the artist. So as we’ve said all along “it’s all about the film”. While our primary focus has been about ensuring that filmmakers regardless of race, creed, color, gender or sexual preference have a venue to display their work collectively not separately, it would not have been possible without the support of willing sponsors. We have been rewarded by our willingness to focus on “City Avenue” and the wonderful businesses that line this historically rich residential neighborhoods along City Avenue. Our wonderful partners include Saks 5th Avenue, Lankenau Hospital, Mainline Health Systems, Citibank, Franklin Institute, Sande Webster Gallery, MindTV, Presidential City Apartments, Crowe Plaza, BOYDS, AUDIOFILMS Recording, Employee Benefits Consulting Services Inc., and Lois Mauro Photography. It goes without saying that without a talented team nothing can be done successfully. I want to personally thank each team members for their time effort and energy because without them we could not have made this event a success. While the festival is all about the film, the festival is about the diversity of the city, the suburbs and common thread that we all share regardless of our of country of organ, it is about accepting and tolerating each person creative uniqueness and allowing it to be expressed. So I’ll see you on “City Ave.” in 2010. Sincerely,
George Clifford Blackmon

HEART OF STONE directed by Beth Kurvant
Marcello, Marcello directed by Claudio di Mauro
Categories: Documentary Running time: 84 minutes http://www.heartofstonethemovie.com/ Before 1960 Weequahic High School (WHS) was known as one of the top schools in America. By 2000 it was one of the most violent schools in the 12th most dangerous city in the country. Heart of Stone is the true story of WHS’ quest to return to its former glory. When Ron Stone took over as principal in 2001, gangs ruled the school. Crime and shootings were commonplace and during his first month on the job he watched students engage in a mass brawl in every hallway. Stone knew his work was cut out for him and devised an unconventional plan to realize his vision of turning the school around. He started by working with the gangs and establishing the school as a “non-violence” zone. He then partnered with the committed alumni association -- comprised of mostly older Jewish and younger African American alums -- to raise funds for programs and college scholarships that helped transform the gang culture of the school to one of discipline and performance. At Weequahic High School, where Philip Roth immortalized his Newark, NJ as a turn of the century Camelot, we watch an unusual tale unfold where past meets present and adolescents strive to overcome adversity. The WHS’ experience is a model for other inner city schools to rejuvenate by reaching into their own past. Inner cities were once proud downtown districts with excellent education programs that graduated professionals who long ago moved to the suburbs. Heart of Stone shows how disparate groups can join together to give their old communities something they haven’t had for generations…a future. Swine, Liquor, & White Women directed by Stuart Weinstock

The story unfolds elegantly as we turn the clock back and watch Sally playing alone, with only her imagination to guide her. As her childhood is short-circuited by the realities of a cruel world, Sally begins her search for the forgotten answers of youth. Two guides, Innocence and Destiny, help her through the maze of life’s events. An intolerable Husband occupies the first years of adulthood, until the Neons (a group of party-girls) and the Hot Rods (their party-guy counterparts) show Sally alternatives to what has become a disinterested and joyless life.
The film is about a young girl named Alexandra: lost in her job, worn out from her nagging mother, and looking for companionship. Also, she was born with the rare condition of telephones dangling from her torso. We follow this girl as she struggles to find self-identity and someone to love (and love her back). It ends happily when she meets a young man with a similar disability - an attached answering machine. Ultimately, it is a story about belonging and being comfortable in your own skin or telephone.

What people fear most about dying is being in pain. And there is good cause for this fear, because a large percentage of Americans die in terrible and unnecessary pain. Latrice Warren understands this well. She is a registered nurse at the University Medical Trauma Center and has been taking care of her ailing father for the past three months. He is suffering from Prostate Cancer and lived the best life a man could ever live. We examine the effects of losing a love one to a disease that is common among American men. Categories: Documentary Running Time: 14 minutes http://www.riverparkalliance.org Schuylkill River Park is designed to provide the community with an outstanding quality of life amid the concrete walls of the city. Cyclists, runners and enthusiasts flock to trails amid the urban landscape, winding their way along the water’s edge. It’s destined to become Philadelphia’s premier recreational respite until a decades-old freight line stonewalls its access. Big business bullies put the brakes on the public’s approach to the pathways. Stalled freight trains and fencing block visitors. Some choose to cross the treacherous tracks. The railroad giant refuses to rectify the problem. This is a story of a community’s determination to rebuke belligerent big business, which proves to be no match against the power of the people. Categories: Documetary Running Time: 90 minutes http://justiceforher.org Justice For Her presents the incredible true story of a young woman who did lose her freedom, a heartbreaking eighteen months — and could have lost her life. The film details the choices she made with men, money, and materialism, making her vulnerable to the predatory tactics of a corrupt, criminal justice system that stalked her, ensnared her, and charged her with capital murder-a crime she neither committed nor orchestrated. Justice For Her is also a love story about a mother’s undying devotion to her daughter; a tale of a bond that could not be broken. Through testimony from nearly everyone involved with the case we hear the incredible story of a mother’s courage, tenacity and faith in her daughter’s innocence.

This documentary opens a window on the lives of Atlanta’s African-American population and reveals the thoughts and actions of African-Americans of every walk of life, every economic and educational level, and every gender identification. Through frank interviews with activists, health educators, and persons with HIV/AIDS, and recorded glimpses into their personal and professional lives, the viewer sees the struggle of those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. It illustrates the importance of altering the course of how we develop our nation’s cities. It communicates the dangers of continuing to invest in the inefficient horizontal growth patterns of suburban communities, and details how they threaten to bankrupt the remaining wealth of our nation. It explores how the depletion of fossil fuels will impact this living arrangement, and investigates the viability of alternative energies that are currently available. This film sounds the alarm that the cheap fossil-fuel-dependant suburban American way of life is not just at risk. It is in peril!
Voices from Inside, Israelis Speak directed by Lucy Martens
Categories: Documentary Running Time: 64 minutes Voices From Inside is a documentary, based upon interviews with 16 Jewish Israeli voices of conscience. Each representing a different facet within the peace movement there, the film traces Zionism from its beginnings to the reality that exists today, with brutal honesty. Through their eyes and perspectives, it is a film about personal development, the evolution of consciousness within each mind, moving from a perspective of nationalist myths to a revelation regarding moral choices for their society - a society that is permeated and defined by militarism and denial. It is a system they perceive as occupying and destroying the lives of not only the Palestinian people, but simultaneously consuming itself in that process. These cross-generational voices have all chosen to break Israel’s silence. They have created a path of transcendence, reconciliation and solidarity, working together with the Palestinians, to forge a path for peace. Murder directed Rhuland Proudffot

A brain surgeon’s observation on the paradox of human conflict. Instead of embracing the oneness of humanity, we kill one another because of the artificial religious differences and national borders created by ourselves conventional fashion. But, what if that conflict itself rescues him from the brink of disaster? Desert in the Coffeehouse directed by Pamela Nice
Many Arabs may have stereotypes of Americans being materialistic, sex-obsessed and intent on controlling world resources. But the actions of our government and the image projected by our media do not reflect the lives of average Americans. This film attempts to put a face on the “American public,” who are for the most part aware that their foreign policy is problematic. Some are naïve and ignorant about the Middle East; others are fairly well-informed and appalled at our policies. This film asks two basic questions: what do Americans think about the Middle East, and do they see America as an empire? Over 100 Minnesotans, interviewed in coffeehouse across the Twin Cities, reflect on these questions and on our relationship with people in the Middle East.
In the end, the Lily must convince the ghost to help her fight the drug lord and save her friends, but it may cost her soul. for more information log on | www.urbansuburbanfilmfestival.com | 5/14/2009

A starving destitute loses himself in the tantalizing aromas from a nearby restaurant. Creator of God directed by Vivekanand Palavali World Premiere Categories: Documentary Running Time: 63 minutes
World Premiere Categories: Drama Running Time: 9 minutes Revel’s recent film explores the audio-visual intersection between deceptively luminous physical space and traumatically dark psychological space and time. The two protagonists are father and young daughter on a journey in this intersection between physical and psychological, also the intersection among uncertain past, filmic present, and possible future. Colors of Darkness translates the tradition of chiaroscuro into the little girl’s horrific trauma at the apparent death of her father. Revel here employs two transition objects: the father’s watch, which apparently survives the trauma, and the daughter’s teddy bear, which does not. Revel’s camera alternates between establishing shots of father and daughter in a car moving into the tunnel where he may die and alternating eye-line matches in which their eyes—and their voices—never quite meet. This postmodern Kuleshov-effect, syncopated by musical score, leaves the interpretation of all relationships unsettlingly open. Does the father die, does he return alive, or is it all a hallucination— and, if so, whose hallucination? Colors of Darkness asks us less to answer than to feel the question. Chaturanga directed by Suman Mukhopadhyay
The documentary is about the global and philosophical quest of a brain surgeon to find answer to the question if God actually exists. The journey that started in India while a teenager eventually takes the surgeon through different parts of the world to explore and inquire about the Gods of major religious faiths of humans. Along the journey the discoveries and observations made were like pieces in the puzzle of answer to the question of existence of God. When all the pieces of the puzzle are put together God’s existence is clarified including who created the creator. The answer will question the basis and rationale behind the religious insanity and intolerance that is fuelling the present day holy wars and jihad.
USA World Premiere Categories: Drama Running Time: 2 hours 5 minutes Chaturanga is the story of a love that is caught between conflicting worlds of ideas. The lead protagonist Sachish fleets from radical positivism to religious mysticism in his quest for life’s meaning. However, his search ultimately yields nothing but crushing disillusionment. This is because he cannot square his abstract ideals with the powerful presences of two women in his life. One of them is Damini, a young Hindu widow, and the other is Nanibala, the abandoned mistress of Sachish’s own brother.Chaturanga thus becomes, after a point, a psychodrama of unbelievable cruelty. Set in Colonial Bengal at the turn of the twentieth century, the film weaves a rich tapestry of crisscrossing desires and moralities.
