DOING IT TOGETHER

by Brian Kidwell
A couple of months ago, after a few drinks, I told my friend I could make him a wood tabletop to go with some metal legs. Unfortunately, one can only push off promises for so long. Big thanks to Doug Calvert, Owen Matthews, Daniel Vrolijk, and David Shapiro for their help! I’d planned on glueing up this 6’ x 3’ beast by myself, but good woodshop folks jumped in without asking and made the task easily doable...many hands make light work.

THE NOVA LABS MICRO-CERTIFICATE PROGRAM by Patrick Waters
Nova Labs community members can now earn Micro-Certificates from Nova Labs, Inc. in all our Shops. Micro-Certificates confirm your makertude and celebrate your maker-fu! Show off your capabilities in woodworking, metalworking, blacksmithing, and more by applying for a maker Certificate. Once confirmed, you get to show off your ability with a Nova Labs Badge & Certificate. How do I earn one? Maker certificates can be earned in any shop by completing a mixture of class and independent projects. You can earn up to four badges per shop: Beginner, Advanced, Adept, and Virtuoso. Beginners have just started their maker journeys, while a Virtuoso has developed and shared their knowledge with others. As well as shop-specific maker certificates, you can now earn two extremely rare certificates: MixedMedia Maker or Mixed-Media Virtuoso. Here, Nova Labs rewards those makers who can’t just stay in one shop, but need to use EVERY shop for their project. These are the makers who have truly rediscovered the joy of making. How do I apply? Once you have completed the requirements for a badge, you can apply at our landing page! Virtuoso and Mixed-Media do require documented projects containing pictures and descriptions. By submitting a documented project, you are allowing Nova Labs to utilize your story and project in marketing materials and on the blog. We want to tell the world about the great stuff going on in our shops! Page 12 | October Newsletter | Nova Labs

WINNER: TANK INSPECTION CHALLENGE by Fred Briggs
Photogrpahy Courtesy of HeroX.com
Congratulations to Nova Labs members Fred Briggs and Jade Garrett who applied for a robotics contest on www.HeroX.com to inspect crude oil holding tanks and won! The grand prize is $250k which will be used to develop a prototype over the next 12 months. The challenge that they will be working on is automating the inspection of the floor of crude oil holding tanks while they are still filled with crude oil, sludge and sediment. These tanks are required to have the floor inspected for corrosion every 5 years and the traditional way is to empty the tanks and clean the sludge out. This cleaning process can cost as much as $10 million per tank every 5 years.
Tens of thousands of these tanks are in operation around the world so this is a Billion-dollar problem that directly effects consumer prices. Fred and Jade have formed a company called Applied Impact Robotics which will be developing robotic solutions to operate in the sludge and sediment in order to do the testing and eliminate the need for cleaning the tanks. Fred and Jade also wanted to give a big thanks to Callye and Red Blue Collective for the valuable input in the process! https://www.herox.com/astinspection/ community.

WINNER: ASOLEYO AMERICAN-MADE SOLAR PRIZE by Adam Winsor
Photogrpahy Courtesy of HeroX.com
My name is Adam Winsor; I’m a visual designer, and a Nova Labs key member for just over a year. My project, Asoleyo Solar Tile, is one of 20 national semi-finalists in the second round of the American-Made Solar Prize, sponsored by the Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). My proposal for aesthetically pleasing, designer solar cells will now receive $50,000 in funding to develop a working prototype, with assistance from NREL’s network of researchers and industry experts, and all thanks to the people and resources I found at Nova Labs! Advances in photovoltaic energy generation have made huge gains in efficiency and affordability, but aesthetics have been an afterthought. A recent study found that up to 40% of consumers Page 16 | October Newsletter | Nova Labs
consider aesthetics to be the most important thing in deciding whether or not to install solar on their homes, the largest percentage of any single factor. Modern solar cells are almost universally dark blue or black, overlaid with a thin rectangular grid of shiny electrical contacts. Cells are combined in a larger grid to form panels, often with frames of bare plastic or extruded metal. Mounting hardware is often utilitarian and industrial in appearance. There is lagging adoption in the solar market because many people, who otherwise would and could install solar, do not because they think current solutions hurt their home’s appearance. If attractive, aesthetically designed solar cells and panels were available, many consumers would
Instead of hiding solar cells in roof shingles or other camouflage, My approach is to develop solar cells that are, in and of themselves, a beautiful modern material for outdoor surfaces. I believe this can be done by applying artistic design to standard solar cell manufacturing without any significant changes in underlying equipment, processes, or materials. I used Nova Lab’s laser cutters to rapidly iterate visual design prototypes of his solar tiles, by etching patterns in mirror-backed, dark blue acrylic. These prototypes featured prominently in my submission materials, and made a huge
difference in giving me an edge over other entries that were better funded. I’d like to give a special thanks to Patrick Thompson, for his help over the years in the laser lab, as well as Callye Keen for assistance and feedback on the proposal itself. I look forward to spending many more hours at Nova Labs over the next few months, working on my functional prototypes for the next stage of the competition! be more willing to install them in high-visibility areas-- not just on roofs, but in back gardens, public parks, and as a visible part of building facades. Especially beautiful designs could even be centerpieces of outdoor gathering places, and be considered desirable luxury goods.

WINNER: AMERICAN-MADE SOLAR PRIZE by Fred Briggs
My proposal is to develop an automated system that will cut, solder and assemble micro solar panels for small consumer electronics and IoT devices.
1
The idea for this came to me years ago when I developed a solar powered tracking device for birds and I could not get anyone to manufacture small, custom solar panels for me. This left me hand assembling panels which was difficult and time consuming. My proposed system will automate the process of manufacturing these small solar panels which will make it easier and cheaper to integrate solar into small devices.
2
For reference, I provided a few images of birds which we put solar charged units on. The first is a Brown Pelican which was tagged in Texas and flew to Mexico. The second image is a Red Tail Hawk which was tagged at the Golden Gate Research Observatory in California The third is a juvenile Swainson Hawk that we caught in Northern California.

project. Final products will vary in size, based on wood selection and other technical factors, but will be approximately 10”x12”.
Once you know the secrets of how to do it, you will be making them for family and friends in no time.
This is a three-day class in order to allow for resin drying time between each pour. Each class may be slightly longer or shorter than scheduled depending on the progress made each session. Please be willing to be flexible with your time.
Students will learn the basic techniques of: • choosing and preparing your wood, • measuring and mixing the right amount of two-part resin, • color selection, and how to bring the rough board to a shining luster.
This is a hands-on class. Please dress in clothing that can get dirty. Resin may not come off fabric. Link to class Article and pictures by Karen James
Students will have the option of using solid colors with a swirl technique or a transparent approach in which you can embed river rocks, coins, and glass. Glass baubles will be provided in a variety of colors. HALLOWEEN PARTY by Adam Winsor Halloween is upon us! It’s that time of year when the shadows grow long and the wind blows chill. In this strange season, makers of all skill levels break out the tools and craft supplies to build epic costumes and decorations. Nova Labs will be hosting a Halloween party on Friday, October 25. Come show off your costumes, your homemade Halloween decorations, and bring a dish to share. Use your creativity to make it a scary one—it should BE delicious, but if it LOOKS delicious, then you’re doing it wrong.
We’ll be setting out spools of string and demarcating areas to build decoy webs. If you see one, feel free to wind the string around nearby objects and the existing web. The tighter and more complex the web, the better! (Just be careful not to block doors, tools, or pathways.) You can also help find the spiders. They are all over Nova Labs, camouflaged as pieces of scrap and leftover supplies. I know for sure there are a bunch of spiders in the woodshop cutoff bin and the laser scrap pile. There are some hiding in the 3D printers as well. Someone just has to help them out by coaxing them into a roughly spider-like shape and helping them onto a web. Kids are especially good at finding spiders, but of course adults can help too. While I have your attention, allow me to also casually drop a mention of my Carve Your Own Tombstone class! On October 4th at 6:30 pm.
In other, totally unrelated news: I regret to inform you that a rogue DIY Bio study group was working on fusing spider biology with various tools and materials that were laying around. They left their experimental enclosure unlocked after feeding time, and all the giant mutant spiders have escaped.
I’ll be showing a group how to carve and finish a realistic tombstone with an epitaph of your own choosing! This one is almost full, but if there is enough interest, we can schedule another!
Beware that, for at least the next month or so, you may run across spiders of all shapes and sizes, which appear to be made of diverse materials. These little critters are mostly harmless, but are fond of building large, complex web systems. In an attempt to lure the spiders out of hiding, so that they can be corralled for further study, and to ensure no one is bitten on their tuffet, we need your help. POLICY MINDERS Using Nova Labs During a Holiday The front desk is CLOSED on major holidays. Traditionally, we cancel the only on holidays and discourage (but not ban) shop classes. This gives our stewards, hosts, and front desk volunteers a much-needed break and family time. This means Nova Labs is for Key Members only on holidays, unless they choose to informally host Associates. Want to come hang with us on holidays? Consider becoming a Key Member! Policy Minder: Key Members should be familiar with their responsibilities as Nova Labs Key Members. Ad Hoc training on the Makerspace lock-up procedures is encouraged. Contact support@nova-labs.org to schedule a time if you need training. https://nova-labs.org/wiki/membership_responsibilities Safety Reminder of the Month: Please turn off the gas for both MIG and TIG. We lost a significant amount of Argon for TIG because it was left open. Frank Hum replaced the hose and connector. All Shops people, even if you weren’t welding and walk by, or Keys, if you are closing for the evening, PLEASE CHECK THE GAS, righty-tighty.
Member and Events Management System Planning: Maker Space Needs Brain Transplant Nova Labs is a shooting star...From our start in 2012, we’ve grown to over 350 members. The demands on our ad-hoc “made at a maker space in 2012” member management software is on life support. We are looking for IT-savvy, not-necessarily-programmer types with that independent maker spirit to help us plan our migration. Please contact John Hoskins to find out more about CiviCRM.
