PAVILLION

COCOON X LIBERATION -3-

COCOON A cocoon is basically a casing spun of silk by many moth caterpillars as a protective covering for the pupa and a mean of control on CO2 concentration and humidity. A cocoon of typical species like Bombyx Mori is made of one single thread of raw silk fiber, despite its multifunctionality. Such effeciency raises a question on tectonic level that can typical structures be brought beyond their destinated functions, that a column may not be only supporting and a beam may actually be seats? LIBERATION Though a cocoon is such a well designed living envrionment, the moths must yet breakthrough the protection one day in order to spread their wings and live on. Regarding this, the resulting pavillion takes the geometry of a deforming cocoon and is thus an expression of rebellion against one’s restricted, repeating days. It is the escape towards the inspiring, limitless new life.

-4-

POROSITY The cocoon is composed of layers even from the same thread. From Inside to outside, there is a difference in porosity by means of density and width of fiber. As a result, the CO2 level, water loss and strength are controlled through the control of porosity. CONTINUITY By different weaving patterns, numerous types of spaces with or without relation to each other may occur, including single spaces, consecutive spaces and wrapped spaces.

FRACTURING GROUND -7-

HIERACHY A sequence of development from self level to family level, state level and finally world level. It can be expressed in term of a journey, enriching experiences of the visitors. In addition, the term ‘Hierachy’ in the theories of Confucianism meant the levelling and difference in positions among every single person, which was somehow differentiating the society. With such understanding, another concept which is essential to the whole project eventually came up and that was the keyword ‘fracture’. FRACTURE As a great force striking the ground, it cracks and splits into fragments of sand and rock, forming a network of spaces in a chaotic manner. The resulting network is a mixture of randomness and irregularity, yet giving a sense of beauty out of the unstoppable violence.

CONTEMPLATION IN LIGHT -13-

INSPIRATIONAL LIGHT To mankind, light means “vision”, “energy” and “warmth”. The potential of light being an inspiration is however often omitted. From gentle sunlight to mysterious northern light and powerful lightning, each initiates different emotions. “Contemplation with Light” is thus about the emotional impact that goes beyond ones’ perception of light. As the world being desire-driven, one often feels lost, especially among highly dense and developed urban areas where light is always in excess as pollution. This project is thus a response to create a break-out space from daily desires within vibrant streets. The project is designed as a light filter in Sai Yeung Choi Street in Mong Kok, Hong Kong. Composed by hundreds pieces of aluminium frames, the volume is lifted up and stretched through the street full of neon signs and billboards. A sequence of space with varying light intensity is generated inside which “purifies” and stresses the existence of light in darkness. The pavilion itself does not apply any lighting device, but instead relies on both daylight and trespassing light from the site at night. Through calculated arrangement of the point-edged frames, one would be able to observe changing, inspiring light art as time passes by and regain tranquility via meditation. Walking in the busy street, passing through crowds, noises and flashes, what one seeks are means of contemplation and that is exactly the greatest yet forgotten gift from the light.

-14-

The contemplation rooms are designed for individual use. By introducing series of point-edged aluminium frames with calculated arrangement and tip orientation, flexible openings can be created.

At night, the street is full of dazzling, trespassing light from shops, signs and billboards. While the overwhelming light sources cannot be easily shut, this project instead makes use of the trespassing light to light up the interior. The rooms are located above the street level and near billboards to capture the artificial light. The bottom edges of the frames diffuse the light, turning it from stunning shine to gentle glow. Visitor may then observe a well of “desire within the room where the glow of moving, vibrant light leaks.

In the daytime, the alternating top edges give a small opening in which the daylight may go through without losing direction. Heavenly light thus results and breaks through the darkness.

WING OF WISDOM -19-

WING Since the ancient time, wings have been recognized as the greatest features of birds. Flying through the atmosphere, these creatures have been impressing human with their litheness. They are the symbol of liberty. Taking the gesture of spread wings, a lightweight sculptural slab is designed as the roof with giant openings while the facade is composed of curtain panels with shading fins. Integrated with studies on natural light sources, the library is a see-through volume with the sculptural structure exposed. It implies the openness of knowledge that anybody is welcome to seek.

COOLING HUB Our focus here is designing a ‘cooling hub’ which utilizes innovative green ideas and incorporates the surrounding buildings and environment to, by mean of shaping the micro-climate, ‘chill’ the campus. SOCIAL HUB The location of the Singapore Polytechnics University is surrounded by newly developed districts, local areas and educational institutions. This results in a potential mix of visitors from all walks of lives. As a response, the site will be turned into a social hub where the public is welcomed and the campus members can share their knowledge with the public.

ZODIAC HOUSE -25-

Bedroom ZODIAC Living room

The zodiac, in astronomy, is an ecliptic celestial coordinate system taking the sun as the point of origin, and the zodiac signs come from the imaginary connections among the stars in humans’ mind.

Washroom & Store room

The functional spaces are designed in the form of discrete fragments, yet keeping the visual connections between the residents. While the living room is designed at the center like the position of sun in the zodiac system, it serves as the core space which physically links all the fragments in different positions & levels.
