PAVILION As my first project in the studio, I was requested to design a free standing pavilion upon a hillside. The product was an imaginery and experimental one. With the concept of Liberation, I intentionally designed the entrance and the main pavilion in 2 different styles, aimming to achieve a kind of contrast between stress and freedom.

The project began with a brief site analysis, covering the site shading, noise sources, ventilation, etc. Moreover, the walkthrough to the site provided me the feeling of liberation, and thus inspired me of the concept. Inspired from Torii in Japan, I designed a series of gates with various sizes and distances, implying a transition from the dull, restictive days to an exciting, limitless new life.

The inspiration from a cocoon was the earliest, yet most important and influencial one among the others. The escape by the insects that pupate inside eventually reminded me on how people nowadays struggle in their dull repeating daily lives, and something must be done to change it. The walkway from the entrance to the resting area implied the experience of ‘walking beyond the boundaries’, and the sense of ‘breaking the borders’.

ZODIAC SINGLE HOUSE My second project was to design a residential architecture for a single family. The product was in form a composition of fragments, yet keeping the linkage among residents in different parts of space in side.

W elevation The zodiac, in astronomy, is an ecliptic celestial coordinate system taking the sun as the point of origin, and the zodiac signs come from the imaginary connections among the stars in humans’ mind. As inspired, I intentionally designed the functional spaces into several discrete fragments, while keeping the ‘connections’ among them indirectly. The living room (area painted in pale red) served as the core space, which acted like the sun in the zodiac system and linked all the fragments in different positions & levels. 07

A more detailed site analysis was carried out beforehand, covering the items as shown on this page. The product was shaped with intention to trap the summer wind and block those in winter, and the openings were designed all towards the center instead of outwards, in order to get rid of the serious pollutions surrounding. COMMUNITY L I B R A RY

Inspired by the lightness and harmony of feathers, the product was designed to be simple, hidden yet contributive to the society. The site was to be excavated and the whole building was designed an underground structure surrounded by gentle slopes, while the roof top reaching the original ground level. The roof top served as a public pathway, preserving an existing passage in the site.
