ПЕРЕДМОВА Ця книга адресована усім, хто вивчає англійську мову (рівень володіння – Intermediate) і любить твори Агати Крісті. Вашій увазі пропонуються вісім оповідань “королеви детективного жанру”, згруповані в два цикли. У перших чотирьох діють всесвітньо відомий детектив Еркюль Пуаро зі своїм другом Гастінгсом і постійним конкурентом із Скотленд-Ярда інспектором Джеппом. Головний герой оповідань другого циклу, містер Паркер Пайн, не має слави маленького бельгійця Пуаро, але не поступається йому в оригінальності. Паркер Пайн не є детективом у загальноприйнятому розумінні цього слова. Він розслідує конфлікти людських душ і лікує своїх клієнтів від розчарованості у житті, використовуючи доволі нестандартні методи. Сподіваємося, що вісім оповідань, які були відібрані для цієї книги, принесуть вам задоволення і дадуть імпульс для роздумів та обговорення в аудиторії. Текст оповідань зазнав незначного скорочення і адаптації, переважно лексичної. Ця книга продовжує серію посібників для домашнього читання, що вийшли у видавництві “Нова Книга” (“Театр” У. С. Моема та “Анна з Грін Гейблз” Л. Монтгомері). Мета посібника – допомогти тим, хто вивчає англійську мову самостійно та в студентській аудиторії, краще розуміти художній текст, розвивати уміння і навички обговорення і аналізу тексту, його проблематики і художньо-стилістичних особливостей, культуру мовлення, збагатити лексичний запас, вчитися сприймати іноземну мову у певному жанрово-стильовому і культурологічночасовому контексті. Ця книга принципово відрізняється від традиційних видань літературних творів із мовним коментарем та завданнями. Її потрібно розглядати в першу чергу як навчальний посібник, який вчить краще розуміти англомовний художній текст. Посібник складається із 10 розділів – вісім по кількості оповідань і два підсумкових (Revision). Розділи мають визначену структуру, основними компонентами якої є передтекстові завдання, що націлюють читача на проблематику оповідання і розвивають прогностичні навички, сам текст оповідання, лексика, рекомендована для активного засвоєння, блок лексичних вправ і завдань, блок питань і тестів для перевірки розуміння прочитаного та блок питань і завдань для обго4
ворення змісту, проблематики, персонажів і літературних особливостей оповідань. У циклі про Еркюля Пуаро кожен розділ включає також завдання, які пропонують читачеві спробувати себе у ролі детективааматора. Розроблені вправи, тести і завдання є результатом ретельного опрацювання авторами тексту і націлені на максимальне використання його мовного потенціалу для розвитку мовного рівня читача. Автори сподіваються, що викладачі знайдуть у посібнику достатньо матеріалу для організації аудиторної та самостійної роботи студентів, а сучасні типи завдань, тести, кросворди і “пазли” зроблять навчання приємним і цікавим. Лексичні вправи і завдання є різними за своїм рівнем і спрямованістю. Автори намагалися слідувати принципу закріплення лексичних одиниць у різних контекстуальних оточеннях з тим, щоб якомога повніше розкрити функціональний потенціал запропонованих лексичних одиниць в сучасній мові. Студенти заохочуються до активної роботи з тлумачним словником. Основними типами лексичних вправ і завдань є вправи на коментування, вибір лексичної одиниці, синонімію, словотворення, знаходження відповідників, уживання прийменників, кросворд, переклад. Виконання лексичних вправ готує студентів до більш адекватного у лексичному відношенні висловлювання з питань і проблем, що пропонуються у блоці для обговорення оповідання. Тестові завдання перевіряють увагу студентів при читанні (фактичний матеріал), а також розуміння тексту. Завдання до обговорення тексту містять питання для дискусії в парах і групах, коментування, характеристику персонажів, питання, що стосуються проблематики оповідань, особливостей авторського стилю, завдання для розвитку писемного мовлення. Ця група завдань спрямована на розвиток комунікативних навичок студентів і навчання їх основам аналізу художнього тексту. Робиться акцент на стимулюванні студентів до висловлення особистого ставлення до проблематики оповідань, їхніх героїв. About Agatha Christie and her works In St. Mary’s Churchyard in Cholsey, Berkshire, forty seven miles west of London, lies Lady Mallowan, Dame Agatha Christie. She was known to millions of people throughout the world as the Queen of Crime, or as she preferred, the Duchess of Death. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in 44 foreign languages. She is the author of 80 crime novels and short story collections, 19 plays, and six novels under the name of Mary Westmacott. Her works have been translated into more languages than Shakespeare’s. Agatha Christie was born in 1890 in England. Her father’s name was Frederick Miller, so she was born as Agatha Miller. Shortly before World War I, in 1914, she married Archie Christie. During the war Agatha worked in a hospital and that experience was useful for her later on. Her first book, “The Mysterious Affair at Styles”, was published in 1920. It was based partly on Agatha Christie’s own nursing experience, and Styles was a copy of the place where she was born. The novel shows Britain recovering from the “Great War” of 1914–18. But Agatha’s books first attracted attention in 1926 when she published “The Murder of Roger Ackroyd”. Agatha made news herself when she disappeared for a few days after her husband wanted a divorce. She was soon found to be staying in a hotel under a false name. Her disappearance is still a mystery! After the divorce she married a British archaeologist, Max Mallowan. Agatha Christie’s most famous characters are Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. She also wrote books and stories about Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, Parker Pyne, and in some books there was no particular main character, e. g. in “Ten Little Niggers”. Agatha’s plays have also made her famous and her play “The Mousetrap” is most likely the best known mystery play in the world. Аgatha Christie died in 1976. The Belgian detective Hercule Poirot appeared in 1920 in Agatha Christie’s first novel “The Mysterious Affair at Styles”. Agatha later wrote numerous books about him and the last one was published in 1975 – “Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case”. Poirot has many characteristics which have made him a legend all over the world – the odd moustache, the egg-shaped face and his high opinion of himself. He will though most likely be best remembered for his ability to solve difficult problems with the help of his little grey cells. In that area he was a worthy follower of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock 7
Holmes. Poirot is probably Agatha Christie’s best-known character – and he has of course often appeared in films, portrayed by various actors. Hercule Poirot has become so famous as an independent character that Anne Hart, a librarian in Newfoundland, has written his biography, “The Life and Times of Hercule Poirot”. But Poirot was not always alone – in A. Christie’s early Poirot stories Captain Arthur Hastings tried to help him – but always seemed to miss the clues that were of importance. In Poirot’s later adventures Hastings became a rare guest, but Poirot also had other friends such as Ariadne Oliver (the mystery writer) and Inspector Japp. Parker Pyne is not so well-known as Poirot but no less worthy of readers’ attention. Detectives are strange people, and Mr. Parker Pyne is the oddest of them all. He specializes in human trouble – all kinds, from unfaithful husbands to slow-moving murderers. Equally good at putting together the pieces of a marriage or the fragments of a murder mystery, Mr. Parker Pyne is possibly the world’s most unusual private eye – and certainly one of its most charming. Mr. Parker Pyne says quite clearly that he is not a detective but ‘a heart specialist’. Lies, intrigue and manipulation are all part of his method of operation and he works to cure unhappiness more often than to investigate crime. Agatha Christie studied murder as perhaps no other author had done before or since and transformed it into an intrigue game of chess or a satisfactory crossword puzzle. All her life she hated violence and blood and said that she had no knowledge of the usual instruments of murder. In old age she also used to say that she had never met a murderer in her life. “I know nothing about pistols and revolvers, which is why I usually kill off my characters with a blunt instrument or better with poisons. Besides, poisons are neat and clean and really exciting... . I do not think I could look a really ghastly mangled body in the face. It is the means that I am interested in. I do not usually describe the end, which is often a corpse.”

Unit I The Adventure of Johnnie Waverly “You can understand the feelings of a mother,” said Mrs. Waverly for perhaps the sixth time. There were tears in her eyes. My little friend, who always felt sympathy for unhappy mothers, made a comforting gesture. “But yes, but yes, I understand perfectly. Have faith in Papa Poirot.” “The police – “began Mr. Waverly. His wife did not let him interrupt her. “I won’t have anything more to do with the police. We trusted to them and look what happened! But I’d heard so much of M. Poirot and the wonderful things he’d done, that I felt he might possibly be able to help us. A mother’s feelings –” Poirot tried to make her quiet – he just could not bear to hear it all over again. Mrs. Waverly’s emotion was genuine, but it strangely agreed with the shrewd, rather hard features of her face. When I heard later that she was the daughter of a prominent steel manufacturer who had worked his way up in the world from an office boy to his present position, I realized that she had got many of her father’s qualities. Mr. Waverly was a big, red-faced, cheerful man. He stood with his legs wide apart and looked the type of the country squire1. “I suppose you know all about this business, M. Poirot?” The question was unnecessary. For some days past the papers had been full of the sensational kidnapping of little Johnnie Waverly, the three-yearold son and heir of Marcus Waverly, Esq.2, of Waverly Court, Surrey3, one of the oldest families in England. “The main facts I know, of course, but could you tell me the whole story, monsieur? And in detail if you please.” “Well, I suppose the beginning of the whole thing was about ten days ago when I got an anonymous letter – nasty things, anyway – that I couldn’t make head or tail of. The writer demanded that I should pay him twentyfive thousand pounds – twenty-five thousand pounds, M. Poirot! If I did not do it, he threatened to kidnap Johnnie. Of course I threw the thing into the wastepaper basket without hesitation. I thought it was some silly joke. Five days later I got another letter. “Unless you pay, your son will be kidnapped 1 2 3

on the twenty-ninth.” That was on the twenty-seventh. Ada was worried, but I couldn’t make myself treat the matter seriously. Damn it all, we’re in England. Nobody goes about kidnapping children and holding them up to ransom.” “It is not a common practice, certainly,” said Poirot. “Go on, monsieur.” “Well, Ada gave me no peace, so – feeling a bit of a fool – I went to Scotland Yard4 and told them everything. They didn’t seem to take the thing very seriously – they shared my opinion that it was some silly joke. On the twenty-eighth I got a third letter. “You have not paid. Your son will be taken from you at twelve o’clock noon tomorrow, the twenty-ninth. It will cost you fifty thousand pounds to get him back.” Up I drove to Scotland Yard again. This time they were more impressed. They believed that the letters were written by some maniac, and that in all probability an attempt of some kind would be made at the hour stated. They assured me that they would take all necessary measures. Inspector McNeil and several policemen would come down to Waverly and take charge. “I went home feeling much better. Still, the atmosphere in the house was nervous. I gave orders that no stranger was to be allowed to enter, and that no one was to leave the house. The evening passed off without any incident, but on the following morning my wife was seriously unwell. Alarmed by her condition, I sent for Doctor Dakers. Her symptoms appeared to puzzle him. While hesitating to suggest that she had been poisoned, I could see that that was just what was in his mind. There was no danger, he told me, but it would be a day or two before she would be able to get about again. Returning to my own room, I was astonished to find a note pinned to my pillow. It was in the same handwriting as the others and had just three words: “At twelve o’clock”. “I must say, M. Poirot, that then I saw red! Someone in the house was in this – one of the servants. I had them all up and pulled them to pieces. They never told anything against each other; it was Miss Collins, my wife’s companion, who informed me that she had seen Johnnie’s nurse slip down the drive early that morning. I demanded explanations from her, and she broke down. She had left the child with the nursery maid and run out to meet a friend of hers – a man! Pretty goings on! She denied having pinned the note to my pillow – she may have been speaking the truth, I don’t know. I felt I couldn’t take the risk of thinking that the child’s own nurse was a criminal. One of the servants was involved – of that I was sure. Finally I lost 4
