Preface In just four days of May, 1878 Tchaikovsky completed one of the most popular sets of piano pieces ever written for children. The pieces from the Album for the Young Op. 39 portray characters and experiences of children’s life as expressed by the great master of symphonic music with a brilliant composition technique. The instruments of the orchestra are easy recognisable in these miniatures. Perhaps that is the reason why it is so difficult to find musical instrument whose repertoire does not include arrangements of pieces taken from this masterpiece of Tchaikovsky. However, the arrangement made by Ludmila Zhulyeva is the first arrangement of this kind for four hands piano duet. There is much research suggesting a programmatic character in the cycle – a programme that compares the scenes of children’s life from morning to evening with the entire human experience of life. Zhulyeva’s arrangement and the order of the selected pieces follow this interpretation. The opening “morning” group of pieces starts with the “Morning Prayer” followed by the restless mood of “Winter Morning” and calms down with the appearance of “Mama”. The next group of pieces portrays games of boys – “March of the Wooden Soldiers” and girls – “The Sick Doll” and “New Doll” followed by popular in the XIX century Russian home party dances “Waltz”, “Mazurka” and “Polka”. The discovering of the world by the child starts from Russia – “Kamarinskaya”, then the music takes us to Italy with “Italian Song” and “Neapolitan Song”, France with “Old French Song” and finally Germany with “German Song”. The next, “evening” group starts from bedtime fairy tale “The Witch”. The mellow and expressive melody of “Sweet Dream” brings the day to the end. The last set of pieces highlights the ideas most important for the composer: the beauty of the nature in the “Song of the Lark”, the spirituality “In Church” and, as the symbol of the endless changes of the life – the turning movements of the organ-grinder handle in the closing piece “Song of the Organ-grinder Player”. The G-major of the opening and the closing pieces creates the tonal arc of the whole composition. The arranger has carefully preserved all melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and dynamic details of Tchaikovsky’s writing. However, the framework of the transcription for four hands allowed the transcriber to make pieces technically much easier for both performers and available even for the youngest students. The arranger has added some phrasing and articulation. Several pieces had been transposed to more simple keys to make these pieces more convenient for pianists with limited experience. The arranger also provides carefully selected fingering suitable for children’s hands. In his manuscript Tchaikovsky indicated no pedalling and the arranger has followed this intention. Obviously, the pedal could be used in the majority of the pieces, but the decisions about pedalling have been left to the discretion of the teacher and performer. Ludmila Zhulyeva Ludmila Zhulyeva graduated as Pianist from the Lugansk (Ukraine) Music Teachers’ Training College, and as Musicologist from Odessa (Ukraine) Conservatorium of Music. At the current time she holds the position of Lecturer of Principles and Methods of Music Teaching at Zaporizhia (Ukraine) Music Teachers’ Training College. Zhulyeva is a winner of many of competitions for composers and is the author of 32 books of music, among them arrangements for piano duets, and for two pianos.
