Vasa - Vaasa Vaasa is a beautiful city located on the west coast of Finland next to a World Heritage Archipelago. The city has a nice high spirited and international atmosphere making it ideal for the student population of 13 000. The city is perfectly suited for engineering students due to the fact that Scandinavia´s largest energy cluster can be found in Vaasa. Novia UAS (and its predecessors) in Vaasa has been a successful pioneer in higher technical education for more than 160 years. The Central Hospital of the district is located in Vaasa, providing many opportunities for practical training for our nursing students.

Åbo - Turku Turku is a city of contrasts, modern and historical, on the stunning southwest coast of Finland. Turku has a student population of 36 000, making Turku a truly student centered city. Turku has a nationally remarkable harbor. There has been education in Marine Technology for over 200 years in Turku. A couple of years ago the degree programmes in Maritime Management moved to a new and modern study environment, including simulators and a planetarium.

Raseborg - Raasepori Campus Raseborg is situated in the picturesque seaside town of Ekenäs in the municipality of Raseborg, about 1,5 h by train from both Helsinki and Turku. A majority of the 15 000 inhabitants has Swedish as their mother tongue. There is an active cultural life in the town, and many well preserved historic tourist attractions. The modern study facilities and the newly built student housing serve about 500 students. The surroundings are perfect for walking and bicycling, distances are short and nature is close. We are co-operating with Västankvarn in Inkoo and with Tvärminne zoological station in Hanko.

The Degree Programme in Nursing has educated culturally competent registered nurses since 1998 and the education consists of theoretical studies, clinical training and thesis. The theoretical studies focus on the human body and its function, health and illness and interpersonal communication. Nursing care is discussed in both a national and international perspective. The clinical training comprises 90 ECTS, ranging from elderly care in nursing homes to acute medical care in hospitals, preparing students for challenges they will meet in future working life. A prerequisite for participating in the clinical training modules is a basic knowledge of Finnish or Swedish. Bachelor Thesis 15 ECTS is also conducted close to working life.

Career prospects

The Finnish Valvira authorise registered nurses. The education qualifies the student to work as a nurse in various hospital settings, at health care centers, in various settings of elderly care ranging from assisted living to specialised nursing in elderly care and in home care with patients with various needs. The education may also become a springboard for further studies in caring and nursing science, as well as in other sciences on an academic level. These earlier studies will be accredited and included in the students degree. This programme is suitable for students who would like to change the profile of their studies or supplement their existing university degree with a Bachelor Degree in Natural Resources. The studies are completed as full-time studies and the students curriculum will be individually designed to incorporate their competence needs.

Career prospects

The market for future professionals is growing with increasing career opportunities for coastal planners, consultants, project leaders, GIS-planners, sustainability or environmental

Student interview

Simona Mitmann Maritime Management, Captain, Turku I was born and grew up in Tallinn, Estonia, and that’s where I also got my basic and high school education and even worked at a few jobs.

Why did you choose Novia UAS and Maritime Management, Captain?

My liking for ships actually stemmed from my liking of Finland (which in turn came from my huge fandom of Nightwish, which has calmed down a bit by now) - because I visited Finland whenever I could and that obviously involved travelling by ship. So I knew for sure for many years that I would study to become a sailor, though the initial plan was to do that in Estonia. However, I soon felt like nearly 19 years of living in Estonia was well enough and having recently set foot in Turku for the first time and absolutely loved it, I looked into the possibility of studying the same thing here and was delighted to find that there’s a programme taught in English.

“Studying in an international group is just the right thing for me, because I’ve always liked international things and nowadays I don’t really feel like I’m a part of any nationality at all.” Simona Mitmann, Maritime Management, Captain

//6Söderlund D Janica

What is living in Turku like?

I must say that I do like it here, and Turku is a lovely and great place to live and study in. In my spare time I take long walks or exercise and I’m slowly learning Swedish and Norwegian. I have a bit of a thing for crafts and design, and I’m a bit of a hoarder of art and office supplies.

Where do you see yourself in ten years?

I hope to have a decent sea job, hopefully as a higher rank officer by then, but that’s all I really aim for, for now.

Bachelor of Marine Technology, Maritime Management, Captain Studies

The studies offer a vast variety of possible specialisations. The nature of the studies, however, is such that the true specialisation takes place while working at sea, not in the studies. The studies give the student competence and knowledge needed to begin specialising. Courses include Stability and Ship Theory, and Navigation and Watchkeeping Duties. The training is closely related to practice and simulators, workshops, rescue boats and training vessels form a significant part of the study environment. The international character of the field is emphasised in the training. A significant part of the program is realised as onboard training. The onboard training is mostly carried out on Finnish ships, but ships under other flags are also used for the onboard studies. Finnish Master Mariners are well respected on the international market and graduates are hired globally.

Career Prospects

The graduates are professional and versatile Master Mariners, qualified for Finnish, European and international careers. The first self-evident career at sea is as deck officers on board of

any type of vessel. Shore based careers within the maritime industry are underpinned by a sufficient career at sea. The maritime industry offers land based positions within authorities, shipping companies, brokers, insurance companies, yards, logistics, and so on. The possibilities are numerous.
