About Finland The Finnish Education In the past decade, Finland has consistently ranked high in the OECD-Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the Finnish education system was ranked best in the world in 2012 (the Learning Curve, Pearsons). Finnish students are motivated and have a greater influence on their studies compared to students in many other countries. There is not a strong hierarchy in Finnish schools, and the interaction between students and teachers is relaxed. Finnish schools have also been fast to adopt new pedagogics when needed. The Education System in Finland The education system in Finland is quite unique and highly advanced. Education is funded by the state, and the Finnish students pay no tuition fees. All the way up to upper secondary education, even the lunch is free. The Finnish higher education is a dual system consisting of universities and universities of applied sciences. The distinction between these two is that universities are more theoretical and universities of applied sciences more practical to their approach.

Finland is the land of the 188 000 lakes. Official languages are Finnish, spoken by 89 %, and Swedish, spoken by 5 %. Såmi is the mother tongue of about 1 900 people. D Pixabay

Internationalisation at Novia UAS Our goal is to build a strong network of partner institutions in order to promote mobility and create opportunities for other forms of international co-operation. The aim of international activities at Novia UAS is to give students skills and competencies needed in a globalised world. In order to achieve this we focus on increasing inbound and outbound mobility and on Internationalisation at Home (IaH). Partners Around the World Being a Swedish-speaking institution, Novia UAS holds an established position when it comes to co-operation within the Scandinavian countries. Novia UAS is an active partner in the Nordplus //10

programme and a member of about 20 different Nordic and/or Baltic networks. Novia UAS has signed more than 140 Erasmus+ bilateral agreements with Institutions of Higher Education throughout Europe. The majority of incoming and outgoing student mobility takes place within the Erasmus+ agreements. We also participate in the Finnish-Russian Student Exchange Programme FIRST and Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility and have entered into bilateral agreements with HEIs in coun-

tries outside Europe. Staff Mobility Teachers are encouraged to take part in outbound mobility and teach at our partner institutions and staff are given the possibility to develop their linguistic, intercultural and professional skills by participation in staff mobility to HEIs or companies and organisations in their own field. Staff from partner institutions and enterprises are invited to teach at Novia UAS or to participate in our International Staff Weeks.

Internationalisation at Home Internationalisation at Home (IaH) plays a vital role in providing international experience for all students, also to those who do not participate in mobility. IaH activities include international projects, intensive courses, use of international material in coursework and lectures as well as classes given in other languages. As part of our focus on IaH, Novia UAS educates international tutors, i.e. fellow students who assist incoming international students in order to facilitate their introduction to and integration in student life, the study environment and local society. International Staff Weeks The aim of an International Week is the professional development of staff members which is achieved through lectures, presentations, discussions, exchange of best practices, workshops and social events. Novia UAS welcomes both teaching and administrative staff members to take part in these annual events. Since 2014 Novia UAS has arranged annual International Staff Weeks.

Why Choose Novia UAS as a Partner? Novia UAS offers a variety of new teaching and learning methods, such as team learning, project based learning and virtual classrooms, giving the students an active role in the learning process. Students are involved in projects carried out in co-operation with industry and working life. Practical training is compulsory and international students tend to appreciate the combination of theory and practice. Novia UAS is also able to offer a relatively high degree of individual attention to each student. The contact between students and staff is very unceremonial and students can always turn to teachers for help and guidance in matters related to their studies. In 2015 Novia UAS was ranked the best higher education institution in Finland regarding academic mentoring for incoming students. In the EU-survey 93 % of the incoming students in the Erasmus+ programme were highly satisfied with the guidance they received. Our international tutors meet incoming students upon arrival and help them with all kinds of practical issues. Tutors also organise different events to familiarise incoming students with Finnish customs and culture.

Our overall objective is for our students to be attractive on the labour market and that our high level of employment among graduates is maintained. This objective is achieved by providing education that is anchored in working life integrates research, development and innovation fosters entrepreneurship and sustainable thinking provides readiness to work in an international context

Practical Training Practical training is a compulsory part of the studies at Novia UAS. Students may opt to do their internship or write their final thesis in a regional, national or international enterprise or organisation, which often leads to employment after graduation. Our close co-operation with working life is permanently present in our daily activities and in attuning curricula to labour market demands.

//23

IN CLOSE CO-OPERATION WITH WORKING LIFE

At Novia UAS we use student centered teaching methods. A key starting point is learning by doing and also to reflect upon the learning process. In practice this means that students take active responsibility for their own learning. Through student counselling and searching for knowledge independently they develop the professional skills and knowledge required to achieve the competencies in the curriculum. In order to succeed, teaching is built on the meeting between students, teachers and often also an employer as a third external partner. From a pedagogical point of view, this meeting is crucial to the outcome of the learning process where students and teachers are involved. At this meeting, it is important to build on students’ prior knowledge and adopt the learner’s perspective.

FOCUS ON ENTREPRENEURSHIP Entrepreneurship Consulting Services in Vaasa Novia UAS has a long tradition of counselling students who are interested in becoming entrepreneurs, the service has been provided in Vaasa since 1994. Usually Novia UAS organises 3–4 meetings per business idea, and everything from the idea itself to opportunities is discussed during the meetings. The discussions mainly focus on the students’ business idea, the market, suggestions to the plan of profits, the financing plan, possible company forms, profitability

and the company’s everyday running. On average 6–8 companies are founded every year by students who utilise our entrepreneurship consulting services. These start-up companies include both service enterprises and manufacturing businesses.

Co-operatives in Turku The TeamNovia concept puts innovations, responsibility and creativity in focus. Already from the start of their studies, the students are divided to co-work in sectoral teams instead of classes, and the teams are tutored by coaches instead of teachers. The courses contain projects of various lengths – both internal projects and commissions from the economic life. The students can choose which projects they want to be a part of and they can also create their own projects. The contents of the studies are guided by their own interests, strengths, development areas and curiosity.

Allegro School of Entrepreneurship in Pietarsaari The students in Pietarsaari also work in teams, although during a shorter period and in the form of an optional course. The teams consists of 2–5 students and are tutored by 2–3 mentors once a week. Around 40 participants and 10

companies participated in the programme in the academic year 2015– 2016. The companies’ objective has often been to organise charity projects. Novia UAS collaborates with Centria UAS, Åbo Akademi University and YA! Vocational College of Ostrobothnia under the joint name Allegro Ink. In addition to shared research and development projects, Allegro Ink also rents out office spaces. It aims to provide an environment where students, staff and businesses meet naturally and work together on entrepreneurial development.

Startup Factory in Raasepori The Startup Factory aims to support entrepreneurship in the interface between education, the region’s economic life, and research and development activities. Its objective is to create an innovative environment where students, staff and external partners, mainly regional, can collaborate. It aims to become a platform where the students’ innovative and unprejudiced ideas can be tested and developed together with established companies. Experts from the economic life participate as inspirators, and the students will be given the opportunity to improve their business ideas. The teachers of the factory will function as tutors and coaches. The goal is to enable both students and others to start their own companies.

The R&D activities support a genuine joint effort between the university and the regional businesses and industries. The research and development activity is being developed as part of the Finnish innovation system through strategically chosen, long-term partners. The R&D activities are based on the overall strategy.
