STUDENT EXPERIENCES Name: Grace Richardson Degree Programme: Nursing Background: I am from Ireland. I studied music, and linguistics in University College Dublin before beginning my studies in Nursing. I applied to do Erasmus in 2010 and was accepted, and began my exchange in February 2010. I loved my experiences of Finland so much that I decided to apply to complete my degree in Novia. About your choice of degree programme: I chose this programme after living in Vaasa on exchange for 12 weeks. I knew it would

be the right decision for me as the classes were smaller, and I enjoy the atmosphere, and culture. About the life as a student: In my free time I like to meet with the friends I have met since I moved to Vaasa. I have made some very strong friendships that will last a life time. I find it quite important to have friends outside of my class friends that I can relax with, and take my mind off my studies every now and again. Whether it is heading for a coffee, icecream, there is always something to do in Vaasa during my free time :)

Plans for the future: After graduation I am unsure of what I will do. I hope to get some work in Vaasa and continue living here for a while. If I obtain a stable enough career, I would consider staying in Finland possibly long term but who knows yet. After this I plan to study for an extra year to expand my general nursing degree to midwifery, and a paediatric nurse. After a few years experience in these fields I hope like to apply to be a nursing teacher. So my life as a student is probably only beginning, but I love to learn new things so I am certainly not complaining.

In an increasingly multicultural global society the strain on healthcare staff is greater than ever and the need for culturally competent nurses is imminent. Choose a career as a nurse and help alleviate suffering in the world!

Studies The Degree Programme in Nursing has educated culturally competent registered nurses, mainly for hospitals, since 1998. The primary studies focus on basic nursing skills, and gradually shift towards indepth studies of medical and surgical nursing with a transcultural approach. The curriculum consists of 75 cr practice. Theoretical studies are mixed with practical assessments in different clinical settings. Practice placements abroad are encouraged.

Courses The nursing curriculum includes health promotion, illness prevention, restoration of health, and alleviation of suffering. Career prospects A majority of the graduates have found work as nurses in various settings in Finland, but also in the USA, Sweden, Norway, Australia, and China as well as in international commissions. The education has also functioned as a springboard for further studies in Caring and Nursing Science both in Finland and other Nordic countries, as well as in other sciences on an Academic level. ď‚ż Notice! DEGREE PROGRAMME IN ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING BECOME AN EXPERT that really can make a difference by turning environmental challenges into sustainable solutions! Choose a career that truly represents the future! There are numerous career opportunities in the environmental and energy fields both locally in the Vaasa area as well as internationally.

Studies Course modules such as Environmental Management and Energy Technology allow the student to focus on for example life cycle analysis and environmental management systems, or energy technology with a focus on automation and sustainability. The students will learn to handle environmental and energy related tasks in a comprehensive way, taking into consideration both legislation and economy. The working methods of the degree programme include case studies, projects and team work which aim at improving the communication, argumentation and cooperation skills. DEGREE PROGRAMME IN MARITIME MANAGEMENT WOULD YOU LIKE to become a Watchkeeping Deck Officer or a Master Mariner? Choose a career that will take you far! The maritime field is full of opportunities on different types of vessels and in all parts of the world. The industry offers an interesting work environment also after a career at sea.

Studies The studies offer a vast variety of possible specializations. The nature of the studies however is such that true specialization takes place while working at sea, not in the studies. The studies give you the competence and knowledge needed to begin specializing. Examples on courses you are studying are Stability and Ship Theory, and Navigation and Watchkeeping Duties. The training is closely related to practice and simulators, workshops, rescue boats and training vessels form a significant part of the study environment. The international character of the field is emphasized in the training. A significant part of the program is realized as onboard training. The onboard training is mostly carried out on Finnish ships, but ships under other flags are also used for the onboard studies. Finnish Master Mariners are well respected on the international market and graduates are hired globally.

Career Prospects Graduates from the degree programme in Maritime Management are professional and versatile Master Mariners, qualified for Finnish, European and International careers. The first self-evident career is at sea as deck officers on board any type of vessel. Shore based careers within the maritime industry are underpinned by a sufficient career at sea. The maritime industry offers land based positions within authorities, shipping companies, brokers, insurance companies, yards, logistics, and so on. There are numerous possibilities. ď‚ż Notice! You need good eye sight to work as a Master Mariner. A medical certificate for seafarers is required upon admission. Read more about the health requirements at admissions.novia.fi
