Jakobstad-Pietarsaari
Living in Jakobstad means enjoying life both on a small scale and a large scale. Jakobstad (or Pietarsaari), is located in Western Finland, on the Gulf of Bothnia. Campus Allegro, with its 700 students, is located in the heart of the town of Jakobstad. The educational units that comprise the dynamic campus are the Universities of Applied Sciences of Novia and Centria, Åbo Akademi University, the YA! Vocational Education and Training, the Music Institute of the Jakobstad Region and the Children’s Art School, Balatako. Allegro is a well-known cultural meeting place.
Vaasa
VAASA IS A BEAUTIFUL CITY located on the west coast of Finland next to a World Heritage Archipelago. The city has a nice high spirited and international atmosphere making it ideal for the approximately 13 000 student inhabitants. THE CITY IS PERFECTLY SUITED for engineering students due to the fact that Scandinavia´s largest energy cluster can be found in Vaasa. Novia UAS (and its predecessors) in Vaasa has been a successful pioneer in higher technical education for more than 160 years. The Central Hospital of the district is located in Vaasa, providing many opportunities for practical training for our students in Nursing.
Turku
TURKU IS A CITY OF CONTRASTS, modern and historical, on the stunning southwest coast of Finland. Turku has a student population of 36 000, making Turku a truly student centered city. TURKU HAS A NATIONALLY REMARKABLE harbor. There has been education in Marine Technology for 200 years in Turku. In 2013 the degree programme in Maritime Management moved to a new and modern study environment, including simulators and a planetarium. The degree programme in Maritime Technology is also located in the same buildning. The simulators are so high-tech that they are well-renowned and used by people in the business.
Raseborg-Raasepori
Campus Raseborg is situated in the picturesque seaside town of Ekenäs in the municipality of Raseborg, about 1,5h by train from both Helsinki and Turku. A majority of the 15 000 inhabitants has Swedish as their mother tongue. There is an active cultural life in the town and nature is everywhere. The modern study facilities and the newly built student housing serve about 500 students. The surroundings are perfect for walking and bicycling, distances are short and nature is close. The needs of some of the degree programs are met at an experimental farm in Västankvarn in Ingå and at Tvärminne zoological station in Hanko.

Master of Culture and Arts, Entrepreneurship in Arts Develop A professional and artistic profile towards the international art scene. This degree programme offers students a unique opportunity to upgrade their entrepreneurial skills as well as ways of communicating their artistic practice. The programme gives students the chance to establish international contacts in order to expand their field of professional activity. The studies are aimed for professional artists with a bachelor or master degree and at least three years work experience in the field of visual culture and contemporary art. The programme is conducted closely with the professional field. International experts within the field of art serve as lecturers and supervisors for the purpose of optimizing individual career opportunities. Students acquire in-depth knowledge of their professional area. Studies The programme comprises both contact studies and distance learning. Contact studies consist of six blocks - two at the Allegro campus in Jakobstad (two weeks in the autumn term and two weeks in the spring term) plus four intensive study trips to various art exhibitions, biennales and art centres throughout Europe. The studies have a personal emphasis highlighting the artistic practise of each individual student. Distance learning includes literature studies, written assignments (statements and analyses), artistic and published works. Career prospects The programme enables students to establish themselves and consolidate their place in the international field of visual culture and contemporary art. The Master of Culture and Arts qualification also entitles students to seek employment within the public sector. •

Bachelor of Engineering, Energy and Environmental Engineering BECOME AN EXPERT that really can make a difference by turning environmental challenges into sustainable solutions! Choose a career that truly represents the future! There are numerous career opportunities in the environmental and energy field both locally in the Vaasa area as well as internationally. Studies This engineering education has a strong base in chemistry, physics and modern mathematical methods as well as in industrial economy, thus providing the essential tools for successful studies and an engineer’s career. Subjects covered include energy production and efficiency, resource and waste management, as well as system and life-cycle analysis. The students will learn to handle environmental and energy related tasks in a comprehensive way, taking into consideration both legislation and economy. The working methods of the degree programme include case studies, projects and team work which aim at improving the communication, argumentation and cooperation skills. The methods give a good basis for future industrial project work. During their third year, students make an excursion in Northern Europe to give them firsthand experience of alternative energy sources, such as wind, sun and biomass. Career Prospects Common career choices after graduation include work in companies using environmental management and quality control systems, energy solutions or recycling as well as minimization of raw materials and energy use. Bachelor of Health Care, Nursing HAS CARING FOR OTHERS always seemed appealing? In an increasingly multicultural global society the strain on healthcare staff is greater than ever and the need for culturally competent nurses is imminent. Choose a career as a nurse and help alleviate suffering in the world! Studies The Degree Programme in Nursing has educated culturally competent registered nurses, mainly for hospitals, since 1998. The studies build up the students basic nursing skills, and gradually shift towards in-depth studies of medical and surgical nursing with a transcultural approach. The nursing curriculum includes health promotion, illness prevention, restoration of health, and alleviation of suffering. Theoretical studies are applied into practical assessments in different clinical settings. The education comprises 90 ECTS of clinical learning, ranging from elderly care in nursing homes to acute medical care in hospitals, preparing students for challenges they will meet in healthcare. Basic knowledge in Finnish or Swedish is a prerequisite for performing work practice in Finland. A period of practice placements abroad is encouraged. Career prospects A registered nurse is authorized by the Finnish Valvira. After being certified and registered the person can practice their profession. A majority of our graduates work as nurses in various settings in Finland, but also abroad. You are needed! The education may also become your springboard for further studies in Caring and Nursing Science, as well as in other sciences on an Academic level. •

Master of Culture and Arts/Master of Business Administration/Master of Hospitality Management, Leadership and Service Design Interesting in WORKing with leadership and service design tasks within creative business? This degree programme give students an advanced knowledge base for leadership tasks of multi professionals and tools for the future leadership challenges in the business. The studies includes blocks of leadership studies, service design and innovation, marketing and finance. Studies The programme is organized in cooperation between Turku UAS and Novia UAS in Turku. A Master in Culture and Arts requires 60 ECTS, Master in Hospitality Management and Master in Business Administration requires 90 ECTS. This is due to the extent of credits of the students earlier Bachelor Degree. The studies are aimed for students with a few years of creative or business experience. The different professional and cultural backgrounds of the students will enable a dynamic and interactive learning environment. The programme is organized as part-time studies which will include contact and distance studies. The contact studies will take place every second weekend or once a month (Friday and Saturday). Students can work with different development tasks or projects connected to working life or their your own work place. The profile of the programme is on the combination of design thinking, business and society and the focus is on the area of service design. Career prospects After studying in this programme students will be prepared to work with leadership and service design tasks within different organizations which want to develop their services. Bachelor of Marine Technology, Maritime Management INTERESTED in becoming a Watchkeeping Deck Officer or a Master Mariner? The maritime field is full of opportunities on different types of vessels and in all parts of the world. The industry offers an interesting work environment also after a career at sea. Studies The studies offer a vast variety of possible specializations. The nature of the studies however is such that the true specialization takes place while working at sea, not in the studies. The studies give the student competence and knowledge needed to begin specializing. Courses include Stability and Ship Theory, and Navigation and Watchkeeping Duties. The training is closely related to practice and simulators, workshops, rescue boats and training vessels form a significant part of the study environment. The international character of the field is emphasized in the training. A significant part of the program is realized as onboard training. The onboard training is mostly carried out on Finnish ships, but ships under other flags are also used for the onboard studies. Finnish Master Mariners are well respected on the international market and graduates are hired globally. Career Prospects Graduates from the degree programme in Maritime Management are professional and versatile Master Mariners, qualified for Finnish, European and international careers. The first self-evident career is at sea as deck officers on board any type of vessel. Shore based careers within the maritime industry are underpinned by a sufficient career at sea. Bachelor of Marine Engineering, Maritime Technology INTERESTED in becoming a Chief Engineer? Graduates are qualified for Finnish, European and International careers and are able to hold land based positions and work at sea. Studies The aim of the education is to train competent and versatile chief engineers for domestic, European and international traffic. The main task of a chief engineer include being responsible for leading vessels technical department, and being responsible for vessels technical safety concerning both people and the environment. The education also offers a good base for functioning in leading positions in land-based organizations within the maritime field. The core studies cover the duties of engine officers. The studies involve mechanical engineering, seamanship, ship technology and electrical engineering. A large part of the education is realized through the schools’ simulator and workshops. The training fulfils the requirements set in The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW-convention).
Career Prospects Graduates from the degree programme in Maritime Engineering are professional and versatile chief engineers, qualified for Finnish, European and International careers. Bachelor of Natural Resources, Sustainable Coastal Management INTERESTED IN Sustainable Development? If so, the Sustainable Coastal Management programme gives graduates an opportunity to work with sustainable development in companies, municipalities and organizations with a focus on coastal areas. Studies Almost half of the global population lives in coastal areas where conflicting interests in use of natural resources exist. The Sustainable Coastal Management degree programme prepares students for how to handle these challenges with integrative means, in practice an theory. The programme is aimed for students who have already completed at least two years of university level studies (equivalent to 120 ECTS) in Biology, Natural Resource Management, Business, Economics or Engineering. These earlier studies will be accredited and included in the students degree. This programme is suitable for students who would like to change the profile of their studies or supplement their existing university degree with a Bachelor Degree in Natural Resources. The students curriculum will be individually designed to incorporate their competence needs. Career prospects This programme will put students in the forefront of a multitude of career prospects. Depending on their background and their choice of specialization they could work in a multinational company or organisation with environmental issues or in a public authority, planning sustainable use of coastal zones. •

Master of Natural Resources, Natural Resource Management INTERESTED in sustainable management of natural resources? This programme has a special focus on the coastal environment and natural resource economics. Vital competences for working in the field of natural resource management are skills in participatory processes and conflict management which students will be able to obtain. Students will also gain advanced project management and leadership skills and be able to improve their professional communication skills Studies The studies comprise 60 ECTS (30 ECTS consist of 6 courses and 30 ECTS are thesis work). The studies are designed for students who already are working in the field of natural resources. The studies consist of virtual components and intensive course weeks (two per academic term) at campus Raseborg. The thesis work is realized as a research and development project related to working life. To be eligible students need to have a Bachelor’s degree in the following fields: Bachelor of Natural Resources, Agrolog (YH), Hortonom (YH), Miljöplanerare (YH), Skogsbruksingenjör (YH) or other Bachelor degrees completed in a corresponding field that is judged suitable by Novia UAS (such as; agriculture, horticulture, environmental planning, forestry or natural resources). Students also need to have at least three years (36 months) of previous work experience after the completion of their Bachelor’s degree within their field of education. Career prospects Graduates can pursue careers in for example governmental departments and agencies, environmental agencies (private and public), consulting companies, companies that produce products from natural resources, and non-governmental organizations. A future career in research and development is also a possibility as well as becoming self-employed as a consultant. •

Cui Nan Energy and Environmental Engineering, Vaasa Background: I come from Beijing, China. I am now studying Energy and Environmental Engineering at Novia UAS. I started studying here directly after graduating from high school, so I had no related knowledge about this field before coming here. My choice of degree programme and Finland: To see the world has always been a dream of mine and I started planning for studies in Australia when I was still in high school. During the planning process, one friend of my parents told me that her sister was studying in Finland and she really enjoyed being here. Then I found out that the educational system in Finland is one of the best in the world and I found the degree programme in Environmental Engineering. I think this is a field full of potential, especially when the world is facing a huge challenge of global warming and so on. My life as a student: I watch movies or read books after school. I like to hang out with my friends a lot, we go fishing, shopping, skiing, etc. I believe that you can always make friends when you are far away from home. When there are long holidays, I usually spend them travelling. I really enjoy the study atmosphere in our degree program, the teachers are nice and all the classmates are so united! Plans for the future: I have a desire to study since I’m still young. I will probably continue studying to get a Master’s Degree in the future but nothing is certain yet. Of course it would be good to work for a period of time in Finland to get valuable experiences. And later on, I could go back to Beijing and build my life there. •

Thomas Fabian Maritime Management, Turku Background: I did most of my schooling in Canada, with the last 4 years of High School being completed in Hungary. I was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta, Canada which is a city in the Western part of the country just east of the Rocky Mountains. I’ve mainly been working in Tourism before I came to Finland. My choice of Maritime Management and studying in Finland: I worked on a cruise ship for six months at the Guest Relations Desk, and while I enjoyed the experience and the camaraderie with the crew, the job didn’t really suit me. So I decided there must
be some other role on board that might be more interesting. That’s when I talked to a deck officer who told me all about his job. When I got back on land I decided I would start looking for maritime schools in Canada, and in Europe. I searched the internet for maritime schools in Europe, and Novia was one of the first hits. I had never been to Finland before, but figured it would be a good adventure!
Plans for the future: I’m currently in my 3rd year of studies, and starting in January I’d like to go out to sea for a longer period of time to gather the sea time needed to graduate (360 days in total). Afterwards I’d like to finish up my last year of studies, and graduate as soon as possible. •
My life as a student: So far it’s a been a great experience! Even though Turku is quite a small city, it’s quite lively, and so there is never a dull moment!
