From the moment I saw this gown on Pearl’s Place’s Instagram, I knew I wanted to photograph it at sunset on the rooftop of the Higgins Hotel. I’m so happy the sky cooperated with my vision!

I met the ladies of Dark Garden Corsetry at the 2019 Festigals Conference and was so intrigued that I asked if they’d be interested in collaborating on an editorial. Check out their story starting on page 80!

Your Budget Planner BEFORE YOU SAY “I DO,” you need ask “How Much?” Traditionally, the bride’s family carries the majority of the financial responsibility. But with the cost of weddings growing as well as the average age of couples increasing, many couples are picking up some of the wedding expenses. Grooms’ families are also chipping in more than just the traditional rehearsal dinner and other small expenses. But no matter how the bill is divided, couples need to decide on a budget and stick with it. Use the worksheet below to decide how your budget will be divided.

ARTS DÉCORATIFS Contemporary Style | Vintage Grandeur THE INSPIRATION: “The clean lines and geometric shapes of the Art Deco inspired Higgins Hotel were a perfect match for the backdrop that I envisioned for this photo shoot. Floral elements, including a motif of orchids, softened the very hard lines that are indicative of the Art Deco style. I am always aware of fabric texture and how it plays into the overall feel of an event so we included a lot of velvet in the shoot as well as light and airy fabrics such as chiffon and organza. Subtle cues such as this can really set the tone for an event and subconsciously elevate the overall experience for your guests.” - Rena Sweeney, Alchemy Events

WRITTEN BY: Jessica Talazac, Director of Special Events Republic NOLA

Julia Bailey Photography

IN THE YEAR 2020, WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE “ATYPICAL” REALLY? Generally speaking, our culture is shifting to a more open mindset where people are embracing the authentic individuals that we all are--so it’s no surprise that mentality is impacting how we think of weddings. While there are many people who love timeless and traditional, it seems to me that more than ever before, couples are striving to go beyond what’s typical to create unique, memorable experiences as a reflection of their one-of-a-kind Love. If you’ve spent your life dreaming of a classic Southern wedding, then this list may not be for you. But if you love pop-culture, rock n’ roll, whimsy, and marching to the beat of your own drum the way I do, then you may want to consider incorporating some of my favorite out-of-the-box, ‘Gram-worthy touches to your wedding experience.

Get the Party Started (Right!) When hiring vendors--especially if you decide to enlist the help of a professional planner--it’s absolutely essential to choose those who align with your personal style and vision. If your goal is to throw a party fit for a rockstar, then hiring a company that has actually worked with rockstars is an excellent place to start. MY HOUSE EVENTS Want to have an intimate rehearsal dinner in a sculpture garden, get married in the middle of a historic bridge, or have some of NOLA’s most innovative chefs come together to create a pop-up-style menu made just for you? Then the ladies of My House Events are your girls. This female-owned collective has successfully positioned themselves as a “culinary curation company” that works with incredibly talented chefs, vendors, and interesting venues to customize the experience for every wedding they produce. They offer full and partial planning services in addition to catering & bar curation, and are the cool kids you want to work with if you are looking for personalized suggestions beyond the norm. myhouseevents.com @myhouseevents inquire via website for a custom quote

Balance Your Bachelorette/Bachelor Festivities There’s no shortage of options when it comes to indulgence in NOLA. If your Krewe is going to make it through a whole weekend of constant cocktails, decadent fine dining, and Bourbon Street pizza at 3am though, I suggest giving them more than packets of Pedialyte and ibuprofen in their welcome bags. BRIDE TRIBE YOGA BTY offers private group yoga sessions, with or without mimosas, at your hotel or a nearby park. If that’s not unique enough for you, they also offer poolside sessions on hot pink astroturf (The Drifter Hotel), kitten yoga (Louisiana SPCA), and blacklight glow yoga. Have people in your group who aren’t down with the down dog life? Their instructors can cater to all levels, but it’s not just about the workout. According to the Bride Tribe, “It’s less about yoga and more about creating the space to celebrate you + your tribe + good vibes. Take a moment. Slow down. Connect to the company that surrounds you. (Then pop bottles of champagne and celebrate! This day is about you!) For all of the craziness that surrounds bachelorette and wedding weekend, we bring groups back to the present through movement and mindfulness.” bridetribeyoga.com @bridetribeyoga Packages start at $20/person ($150 minimum) FLOT NOLA If mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation are your thing, consider an alternative spa experience like Flot Nola Float Center & Spa. Their state-of-the-art saltwater filtration system infuses 800-1000 lbs of pure epsom salts into a temperature-controlled pod void of light and sound for a weightless experience that mimics floating in space. It is scientifically proven to promote a heightened-state of relaxation and mental clarity. They also offer combo packages with an array of holistic spa services like massages, facials, or a trip to their Infrared Sauna or Oxygen Bar. So many options to help you detox before you retox! 6024 Magazine St., New Orleans flotnola.com @flotnola Packages start at $65 for a 60-minute float session

Choose Creative Krewe Attire Whether for Bachelor/Bachelorette or the wedding weekend itself, matching casual group attire for the wedding party has become a must. But do your bridesmaids reaaaally want to spend $$ on another “Team Bride” tank top like every other one they’ve seen on Etsy (and that they most def will never wear again)? Consider instead choosing stylish, locally made items focused on your wedding destination: New Orleans. For those from out of town, it’s a souvenir and for locals---well, we can’t ever show enough NOLA love! THE ELIZABETH CHRONICLES (shown above) Chic is the best word to describe this beautiful uptown boutique. In addition to a stunning selection of style-savvy clothing and accessories, the brand has its own line of fashion-forward t-shirts, tanks, and sweatshirts that pay homage to New Orleans. With phrases like “j’adore nola”, “seaux chic”, “Krewe of Kouture”, and “geaux girl”, your squad will look sophisticated and thank you for sparing them another t-shirt for the thrift donation pile. All of The Elizabeth Chronicles’ graphic shirts are made-to-order; if you love the look but still want a personalized touch, you can contact them through their website for custom orders. J’adorable! 5430 Magazine St, New Orleans, LA theelizabethchronicles.com @shoptecnola Tanks & Tees $30 & Up, Sweatshirts $44 HOME MALONE This shop is stocked to the brim with NOLA themed clothing & gifts--in fact, they even do full gift registries! For the men in your wedding party, I absolutely love these “Ya Boix” hats, designed in the style of the La Croix logo. They’re available in a variety of colors, including the iconic pastel shades of the soda brand, black & gold, and Mardi Gras (purple, green, gold). 629 N. Carrollton Ave. and 4610 Magazine St., New Orleans homemalonenola.com @homemalonenola Hat $28

Make Memorable Moments As a planner myself, I try to always make sure to remain focused on the “why?” when it comes to wedding planning. The reason behind all the details and special touches is to tell a story that is as unique as your love, and to celebrate that love with your closest family and friends. Having elements that truly engage people through the art of experience is a great way to get your guests to live in the moment, and then remember those moments forever! OYSTERS XO Raw oysters are a delicacy that many want added to their wedding menu, but as a station I find it visually unappealing & messy, and the line seems to never die down. The “Roving Oysters” concept from Oysters XO solves those problems by mobilizing their shuckers. Staff wear a hip-holster containing the oysters with standard accoutrements like lemon wedges and cocktail sauce, and they shuck as they walk around interacting with guests. Their services can be booked a la cart, or are available through My House Events as part of your catering package. Oystersxo.com @oystersxo Inquire via website or My House Events for a custom quote SIPMI BY THE GRAND BEVY Do you know what people love more than photobooth pics printed on strips of paper? Photobooth pics printed on cocktails! The Grand Bevy is the leading high end creative beverage service for the event market across the USA and internationally, and we are lucky enough that they have an outpost here in New Orleans. They specialize in innovative cocktail techniques like molecular sphere and liquid nitrogen cocktails, but their SIPMI invention is the most futuristic of all their offerings. The technology takes the guests’ photo and makes an edible print on top of their cocktail in 30 seconds or less, hence the slogan “Drink Yourself.” Though either option is a luxury upgrade, they also offer a more cost-effective preset version that uses a single photo or graphic you provide in advance. This is one addition that will definitely deliver the WOW factor! Thegrandbevy.com @thegrandbevy Packages start at $2800 for SIPMI Preset, $3800 for SIPMI Live LIVE PORTRAITS BY RAVEN JONES Having a live painter at your wedding is awesome, but they typically are creating a single painting that’s meant for the couple to keep. Local artist Raven Jones can do that too, but her real gift lies in her ability to quickly create stunning watercolor, ink, pencil, or charcoal portraits in 10 minutes or less. She’s a modern alternative to a caricaturist with the artistic integrity of an authentic street artist like you might find in the Frenchman St. Market. Giving your guests a piece of art as a favor is cool----but art that’s of them, made in front of them? #ballermove ravensjones@gmail.com @bird_burger Packages start at $250

Party Like It’s 1999

Let Your Swagger Shine

I believe whole-heartedly that the best weddings always leave time at the end for a solid “party power hour”. Once everyone has had enough to drink that even Grandma is letting loose on the dance floor, it’s time to really let your inner wild child shine. To notify your guests that it’s about time to get their rave on, I love a dramatic change in ambiance--like suddenly flipping the switch on UV lighting and throwing glow sticks to everyone on the dancefloor. 90’s nostalgia is extra-hot at the moment, but a neon sign isn’t the only way to create the glow vibe.

Fashion is one of the greatest means of selfexpression, and your wedding is the chance to choose ensembles that put Jay-Z & Beyonce-level swagger in your step. Besides your actual wedding dress and suit, quirky accessories are a great way to bring some of your personal pizazz to the party. RINGE + CO. F Specializing in all things sparkle + shine, fringe + co.’s signature tinsel jacket is the perfect thing to throw over your wedding gown when it’s time to go full disco queen on the dance floor. If you’re just a little bit extra and want to do a full costume change before you head to the afterparty, their white sequin pantsuit set is sure to be a showstopper! Though not available for purchase just yet, Owner & Designer Kelsey Campion gave me the insider scoop that she’s working on more wedding-focused styles in 2020, including a bachelorette collection to be released later this year. fringe-co.com @fringe.and.company Tinsel Jacket $165

POOF COTTON CANDY GLOWSTICKS The whimsical nature of fresh spun cotton candy is taken up a notch with Poof Cotton Candy’s glow-in-the-dark cones. With flavors like King Cake, Cookies & Cream, Fruity Unicorn, and Bourbon & Bacon, this tasty interactive station is a great way to close-out your wedding reception with a bang! For a more economical option, they do a non-glow version of the action station as well as pre-packaged favors with custom labels. They are also available for booking a la carte, or through My House Events as part of your catering package. Poofcottoncandy.com @poof.nola Glow Packages start at $500; Inquire via website or My House Events for a custom quote

BONFOLK Fun socks are great way for grooms to interject some personality into their look. I love Bonfolk not only for their vibrant NOLAthemed patterns, but for their mission--for every pair purchased, they donate a pair of socks to homeless initiatives. From favorite football team to favorite food, Bonfolk has an option to suit every dude. Bonfolk.com (also available at John’s Tuxedos in Metairie) @bonfolk Socks $19.99

With 12 years of planning experience, Jessica Talazac is the Director of Special Events at Republic NOLA, a renowned live music and events venue located in the Arts/ Warehouse District of downtown New Orleans. The 168-year-old historic building has been revived with modern amenities to create a unique, one-of-a-kind atmosphere that has set the stage (literally) for iconic artists like Mumford & Sons, The Chainsmokers, deadmau5, G-Eazy, Diplo, and many more. Jessica oversees the booking, planning, design and execution of all private parties, weddings, and corporate events for the 1000 capacity venue. Your Rehearsal Dinner

Sarah Alleman Photography

THE REHEARSAL DINNER IS THE TIME TO REFLECT and enjoy the company of close friends and family before tomorrow’s big event. It’s a wonderful time to present gifts to family members and the wedding party and thank them for supporting you during all of your wedding festivities. Restaurants, hotels and other establishments in NEW ORLEANS WEDDINGS MAGAZINE are some of the most beautiful in the country. Visit some of our amazing vendors and sample what they have to offer!

THE BASICS WHO HOSTS Traditionally, the groom’s family hosts and pays for the Rehearsal Dinner.

WHERE There are no rules for location, but ideally it will be somewhere convenient to the ceremony site (if doing an actual rehearsal). Private residences, restaurants or a unique location special to the couple are all great options.

WHO TO INVITE All immediate family (parents, grandparents, siblings and spouses), members of the wedding party (and their plus ones), and out of town guests; other wedding guests may be invited if the budget allows.

LEVEL OF FORMALITY This is entirely dependent upon the couples’ desires and wedding style and the hosts’ budget. Anything from an informal backyard crawfish boil to the most formal 5 course seated dinner at a restaurant may be chosen.

YOUR

SECOND

LINE

A guide to planning a New Orleans wedding parade WRITTEN BY: Rena Sweeney, Alchemy Events

For many couples, their wedding day is the perfect opportunity to do things they normally don’t get to - wear that over-the-top outfit, go all out with your décor, star in your own parade! Even if your dream wedding is a bit more subdued, a Second Line parade is a fun addition to any wedding and can actually be practical as well. So as daunting as planning your own parade might seem, this guide will help you get through it without a worry.

64 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

THE “WE WANT SOMETHING LOW-KEY” COUPLE Low-key couples wanting to incorporate this New Orleans tradition can easily do so by parading around the venue at the end of the reception, using the Second Line as a way to end the night on a high note. It’s also a great way to get guests moving and out of the space once the party has ended, making sure you won’t be stuck paying for additional time. This is also the least expensive Second Line option as you don’t need permits or police escorts, just music and some accessories. A Second Line band is always fun but you can always have your reception band or DJ play music instead of bringing in a separate group. THE “WE WANT SOMETHING FUN BUT ALSO LOGISTICALLY HELPFUL” COUPLE Most couples doing Second Lines in New Orleans fall into this category. You may need a way to move your guests from one location to another,

or if you’re doing it all in one location, you may just need to get guests out of the venue for a while so your vendors can “flip the space” (vendor lingo for “break down the ceremony and re-set for the reception”). This option does require permitting and police escorts but isn’t something that should be overwhelming. The City of New Orleans has made the process streamlined through their One Stop Shop website at nola.gov/ onestop/events/parades/paraderace-permit/ Most parades will just need to fill out the Master Application along with Supplement C. This will give you a permit for rolling street closures and allow your walking parade, as long as you aren’t throwing items to the general public. Carrying your own drinks, guests wearing beads or waving hankies, etc. is all still permissible with just these two forms. Submit both forms along with a map of your proposed route to the City no less than 15 days prior to your requested event date. Submitting

THE “WE WANT AN ALL OUT PARADE” COUPLE If this is the moment you’ve been living for, there are some really fun additions you can make to your Second Line parade to really take it to the next level. Many bands offer upgrades such as a Grand Marshall or even Mardi Gras Indians to lead your parade. You can also hire an entertainment company to provide dancers, stilt walkers, big head revelers and more. If you really want to make your parade stand out, you can also have throws to toss to the crowds that inevitably form and follow Second Lines. If you do this, keep it simple by tossing regular or customized beads unless you have a coordinator or staffing to help with the logistics of transporting bags of

THE ACCESSORIES & DETAILS If you want printed Second Line hankies or umbrellas, many local companies such as Backyard Printing (find them in our Wedding Resource Guide on pages 12-13) can help you personalize them. One way I love to incorporate the “something borrowed” wedding tradition in a New Orleans way is to borrow your umbrellas from a friend or family member, as many people buy them but then never have the chance to reuse them. Personalized plastic cups for your guests’ drinks, personalized beads and many other fun options can also add to the fun while acting as favors for your guests. Just keep in mind that glass containers are not allowed on the streets. My final piece of advice is a reminder not to overlook a very important question: What else is happening in the city on the same day? Make sure to check a local event calendar such as neworleans. com/events/ for information on other events, parades, marathons or festivals that might be happening on the same day in your area of town. A conflicting event could result in having to adjust your wedding day schedule or having your application denied if another event is already on the books. Follow these easy instructions and advice, and laissez le bon temps rouler!

The Swansons Photography

your application a few months ahead is ideal in case you hit any snags. If your route poses any problems, they will let you know what similar route they will let you take. A week or two before your wedding, the Office of Police Secondary Employment (OPSE) will contact you to confirm your police escort for the parade. The fees for all of these will depend on factors such as how many guests are involved, the length of the parade, etc. Plan to spend at least $1000 for your Second Line, but be aware that costs can certainly go higher depending on the details of your parade.

The Swansons Photography

throws. If you throw items, you also have to contract with a company to come behind you for cleanup and you must provide that information to the City as well. You can include cars in the parade, special effects, pyrotechnics or fire jugglers which need additional forms to be submitted, but is a process the One Stop Shop website will walk you through.

Your Wedding Décor YOU’RE PLANNING YOUR wedding at a “blank canvas” site, you’ll definitely need to make use of rental services. Even if you hold your event at an all-inclusive venue, you may find that you want to personalize the space with specialty linen or furniture. Décor rental companies have so much to offer from practical items like tables and chairs to fanciful thrones, ambiance creating lighting and special effects and more!

Getting Started

tables, mirrored disco balls, portable restrooms, and photo booths, party rental companys can find just about anything – all you have to do is ask.

Rental and Décor

Shop Around After determining what type of items you’re looking for, it’s time to shop. To find a reputable party rental company, consult with your wedding coordinator, the event planners for your ceremony and reception sites for recommendations. Once you’ve narrowed your selections to a few rental companies, make appointments so you can check out each company’s inventory. Sarah Alleman Photography

Before you try and select a party rental company, you’ll want to sit down with your wedding coordinator or the event planners for your ceremony and reception sites to determine exactly what you’ll need. Venues often offer linens and tableware, so you’ll want to be certain of what you’ll be receiving from your wedding venues. Once you determine what you already have, you’ll then know what you’ll still need to make your celebration complete. No matter how big or small, it’s likely a party rental company can help you find it. From lounge furniture, roulette

Contracts 101 WEDDING PLANNING IS FUN AND EXCITING, but it’s also a business. As a bride, you need to be business savvy as you finalize all the details of your big day. Still you may have some flexibility if you need it. n Ask your vendors if they allow changes or modifications to a contract. They may allow it, but they may charge extra for the courtesy. For liability reasons, most vendors want to make sure they’re covered in case of an accident or wedding day mishap. With all vendors, make sure you have a backup plan in case of an emergency and always try to be calm and fair. Remember having a contract is a good thing. It protects you and your vendors on your special day.

Let Them Eat Cake NO MATTER HOW BIG, STYLISH or expensive your wedding is, it won’t be complete without a wedding dessert. Traditionally this dessert is in the form of a wedding cake, but don’t feel like this is your only option. Have some fun! Wedding pie anyone? Milk and Cookies bar? Your options are limitless and oh so sweet!

Anatomy of a Wedding Cake Frostings BUTTER CREAM A creamy, spreadable icing that’s made from butter and sugar. FONDANT A thick concoction made from sugar and gelatin that is rolled out flat and then draped over the cake to provide a completely smooth, firm surface for decorating. ROYAL A frosting made by beating together sugar and egg whites. It hardens when dried, so it is great for dots, lace or lattice work. GANACHE This fancy term is simply chocolate melted with heavy cream. This frosting makes a beautiful shiny glaze on cakes and cookies. If you chill a ganache, beat it until it’s fluffy and stiff, then form it into balls, you’ll end up with truffles. You can also chill and beat a ganache

he fashion conscious have used corsets to reshape their figures for centuries, from the tight silhouettes Catherine de’ Medici introduced to the French court in the 1500s to the whaleboned foundation garments popularized by Victorians, to the celebrity-approved waist trainers of today. Once confined to being worn under clothing, corsets are now just as commonly worn as outerwear. Celebrity trend setters including Bella Hadid, Lizzo and every Kardashian have been photographed wearing tight-fitting body shapers.

While corsets historically have a reputation for being restrictive of breathing and activity, today’s corsetry movement aims for a blend of comfort, beauty, and figure support. “Well made corsets support the entire body including the bust, back, and hips, rather than simply cinching the waist,” says Autumn Adamme, whose Magazine Street shop, Dark Garden, offers custom-made and ready-to-wear corsets and bespoke gowns. “A corset that fits well lifts, smooths, and supports you better than any strapless bra or back brace,” says Adamme, who began designing and making corsets over 30 years ago. “Putting on a well-fitted corset brings instant confidence. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen people get teary and say, ‘I never knew I could feel like this.’” While Adamme has always created custom bridal wear and ensembles, she recently expanded the company’s offerings to include a ready-to-wear bridal separates line. That’s right on trend; the 2020 bridal fashion shows by designers such as Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang and Carolina Herrera featured corsets overlaid with other fabrics to create a look Harper’s Bazaar called “sophisticated sexiness.” theNOWBride.com | N.O.W | 83

“Exposed corsets are still trending, but some designers are starting to take a more modest approach by using layers of organza, lace or chiffon to partially cover the bodice for a semi-sheer effect,” WeddingWire Associate Editor Samantha Lacia says. “Corsets have a romantic, fairytale appeal, and they’re a popular choice for dress-wearing tobe-weds who dream of wearing princess-inspired wedding fashion. Additionally, costumes from period dramas like Game of Thrones, Outlander, The Crown, and most recently, Little Women, are also responsible for the renewed interest in wedding dresses with corsets.” Celebrities who have embraced dresses with visible corsets for their own nuptials include actress Zoe Kravitz, who wore an Alexander Wang white, strapless corset with a low-slung, slinky maxi skirt at her June 2019 wedding reception. Model Ashley Graham recently partnered with Pronovias and unveiled a ready-to-wear bridal fashion line in sizes 0 to 34. The partnership was inspired by Graham’s frustration that she couldn’t find a corset dress larger than a size 10 when she got married. Meeting the unserved needs of plus-sized women and others left out by mainstream fashion is one reason Adamme began making custom clothing. In the late 1980s, she worked at a clothing store that specialized in larger sizes – yet she saw many women disappointed with their options. “We go shopping because we’re looking not just to clothe ourselves but to play with and express our sense of identity,” she says. “To see women leave feeling worse was heartbreaking to me.” With Dark Garden, Adamme translated her first decade of custom work into a ready-towear corset line. Now, a dozen styles are offered in sizes from 16” to 42” which fit waists from 22” to 48”+, and custom sizing is always available. Adamme began offering her corsets in 1989. They are “historically inspired,” she says, but don’t use historic patterns “because modern bodies and lifestyles are so different.” She opened her first brick and mortar store in San Francisco in 1993 and soon built a loyal client base that includes celebrities such as burlesque dancer Dita von Teese, Jennifer Lopez, Christina Aguilera, Pamela Anderson and more. “There’s always been a demand for corsetry in New Orleans,” says Adamme, whose relationship with the city goes back at least as far as her own wedding day. One of the designs in Dark Garden’s style library was inspired by a series of fittings with the Sirens of New Orleans, whose original look she designed in 2010. It’s called the “Valentine” and is best for women “whose hourglass is more than half full.” “I would fit 15 to 25 women in a weekend, and when you see so many people in such a short time you start to notice patterns,” she says. “I realized I kept needing to make the same pattern alteration so we added a new style.”

Adamme’s preferred fabrics include silk satins, silk brocades, and French broché. But even with such delicate-looking materials, corset-wearing can be “fierce and feminine at the same time. You can accentuate your curves while retaining your strength,” Adamme says, adding that warriors in Ancient Greece wore waist reducing support garments into battle as did officers in the 19th Century. The key to a good corset, either one that’s off the rack or made to order, is the correct fit, says Rena Sweeney, owner/designer at Alchemy Events and the creative director of New Orleans Weddings Magazine. “Going to see professionals such as Dark Garden means you’ll be measured and fit to the correct corset for your body type as well as the length of your torso. They will also teach you the correct way to lace it,” Sweeney says. “If you have a particularly low back or other unique detail to your dress, you may want to consider having a corset custom made to work with the shape of your gown and your body. Also take into consideration the type of material your dress is made out of, as some materials will show boning. so you may opt to just use a body smoother instead.” Dark Garden has pioneered an array of construction styles, including some options designed to be particularly discreet under clingy, fitted fabrics. WeddingWire’s Lacia says a custom corset “becomes an investment piece you’ll have forever and is a chance to wear something that you’ve always dreamed of.” At Dark Garden, corsets in the ready-to-wear line start at $395 while bespoke styles start at $1,750. Adamme’s team likes to have at least three months of lead time to fit and construct a bespoke corset. That may seem steep to some but realize the right corset requires multiple fittings. These can be done in person or remotely through video consultation. Corsets from the ready-to-wear line are available to try on and purchase in-store, or can be made-to-order within 6 weeks. “As with shoes, if they hurt, you won’t wear them. Compare the price of two pairs of uncomfortable shoes to one pair of good shoes,” Adamme says. “Most people have some asymmetry, like one hip higher than the other, and the corset might dig into the armpit or not support one breast. [Custom fitting means] we can draft a pattern for each half of the body which makes for a much more comfortable and flattering fit.” A well-fitting corset, Adamme says, never goes out of style. It can be put on display on your wedding day and then styled with other clothing for multiple wears. “One of the things I love best about corsets is you can wear them as part of many ensembles,” she says. “You’re not limited to a one-day wear.” To learn more about Dark Garden Corsetry, visit darkgarden.com.

WEDDING VEIL LENGTHS After your wedding gown, a wedding veil is one of the most defining aspects of your bridal appearance. Historically a veil was worn to protect the bride from evil spirits; nowadays it is simply considered a beautiful form of adornment. Veils also come in many lengths, with and without embellishments. Here are few of the most popular lenths.

BLUSHER: This style falls loosely over the bride’s face, The Blusher is often attached to a longer veil that trails down the back of the bride’s head and gown.

FLYAWAY: A multi-layered veil that just brushes the shoulders mid-back, it’s considered less formal than other styles. ELBOW: Multiple layers of fabric are usually used to fashion this type of veil, which extends to the bride’s elbows. The length makes the veil quite versatile, for a formal or less formal gown.

FINGERTIP: Like the Elbow, this veil is typically made from a few layers of fabric, and extends to the bride’s fingertips when her arms are resting at her sides.

BALLERINA: Also referred to as ballet-length or waltz, this style varies, falling anywhere between the bride’s knees and the ankles. It can be paired with a formal or less formal gown. CHAPEL: Reaches to the floor and extends up to three feet past the hem of your gown. This length is a very romantic look, and is great for formal black tie weddings.

CATHEDRAL: Also referred to as the “royal veil”. Cathedral length veils are perfect for formal church or large venue weddings. They extend way beyond the hem of your gown for a dramatic entrance. theNOWBride.com | N.O.W | 89

Choosing a tux might just be the easiest wedding-related decision you’ll make. After all, it’s hard to go wrong with a suit that has changed so modestly in the past 120 years. In fact, if you compare today’s tuxedo with the one your father wore at his wedding, you’ll likely see only slight variations (provided dad didn’t wear a ruffled shirt). The single-breasted notch lapel tuxedo, is a classic look that never goes out of style. Searching for your own take on the traditional tux? From ties and vests to buttons and shoes, here’s the straight talk on your options, along with styles that best suit your groom’s silhouette.

Tie one on When it comes to ties there’s standard, and then there’s spectacular. While the classic bow tie will always be a perennial favorite, there are other options for grooms who choose to venture outside the norm. One of the most popular styles, the fourin-hand, is similar to a standard business tie. Paired with a matching full-backed vest in a subtle pattern, a four-in-hand is the top choice.

Jacket required The key to a flattering tuxedo often lies in the jacket. The right one can whittle the waist, lengthen the torso, or add the appearance of broader shoulders. The most common jacket is single breasted with a shawl lapel. This look is perfect for both short and tall men with more of a stocky or husky appearance. The same jacket with a notched lapel would flatter a short, thin groom because the notch in the lapel gives the

appearance of broader shoulders. A double-breasted jacket is great for thinner men because the eyes are drawn to the two rows of buttons at the midsection and gives the illusion of girth. With a double-breasted jacket, the shoulders can also be padded a bit to give the wearer the appearance of broader shoulders while still retaining the look of his trim waistline.

Somewhere between black & white The color of your groom’s tuxedo is up to the two of you. Take into account the formality of your celebration, along with the time of day. If you’re planning an afternoon ceremony, a gray tuxedo with a stroller jacket is the standard look. A more casual celebration closer to evening might call for a white dinner jacket with black trousers and tie. A formal evening affair warrants the classic black tuxedo. Keep in mind, however, that traditions are just that and the two of you should choose the style and color that you want, no matter the time of day or the formality of the occasion.

Finish the look Finally, complete the formal look with matching socks and shoes. The guys’ socks should either be the same color as their shoes, or show some personality and match the colors in your wedding, which make for some great photo ops. Nowadays men are choosing less formal shoes and also showing personality with matching “Chucks” or “Toms.” But if needed, formal shoes can be rented from your formalwear company. Styles vary from slip-on versions with a parade shine to mock wingtips in classic black.

Enter the solution: The Sculpting Center of New Orleans – powered by Ochsner Health System – is a one-stop shop of glamour solutions for the big day. Check list

6 MONTHS OUT: Begin With the Skin: You can’t start exfoliating a week before the big day. It takes months to get your skin prepped to glow before you walk down the aisle. The Sculpting Center offers complete skin care regimes based on your skin type and needs. Fat Be Gone! Meet with our medical experts to target areas of fat on your body you want eliminated before the big day. The Sculpting Center offers non-invasive fat removal – Coolsculpting – a state of the art, safe, non-surgical fat freezing procedure that requires no down time. You can remove up to 20% of your fat store in a trouble area in one visit. After three months, you can remove another 20% from the spot for that perfect body contour. 3 MONTHS OUT: Contour your body. Once your body has expelled 20% of the fat store in one area, a follow-up visit will literally contour your body into your ideal shape to complement your dream dress. You can remove in total from the two treatments in one area – 40% of the fat stored in a trouble spot. Can’t you just hear that wedding dress zipper smoothly sliding up to reveal your best self on the big day?! 1 month out: Smooth your face. About 4 weeks from wedding day is the ideal time to get that last Botox treatment to smooth out that forehead crease or any signs of crow’s feet around the eyes. It’s also the right time to get lip fillers – after all, you will be sealing the biggest day of your life with those lips in the “you may now kiss your bride” moment! Be ready, the Sculpting Center has got you! ‘Peel’ the stress. About 3-4 weeks from wedding day, you will want to do a Med Spa peel to remove toxins and dead skin from the surface of your face. It forces those new, young skin cells that create the glow effect – a must have when the cameras are snapping and the wedding bells are ringing. 1 WEEK OUT: ‘Plane’ Talk- It’s crunch time now for your skin. We can’t have any unwanted hair or residual dry skin on the wedding day. Dermaplane is a perfect solution a week out. It’s similar to microdermabrasion, but also removes the vellus hair (peach fuzz) thus revealing a baby smooth complexion. Face out! A gentle, moisturizing facial puts the proverbial icing on the wedding cake when it comes to wedding day beauty. It’s the last touch in the regime to stun your guests – and the love of your life at the end of the aisle.

This may seem easy, but there’s often more to consider about a photographer than his or her website. You need to work with a professional photographer who shoots in a style that suits you. If you’re a really unstructured couple, you may love a fly-on-the-wall approach to shooting a wedding; but for a more traditional look, you’ll want a photographer who shoots a mix of portraits and candids so you can fill your album with posed pictures and still have the benefit of getting some fun candids. The best way to gauge a photographer’s style? Ask to check out an entire wedding the photographer recently shot. Look for photos that convey an overall sense of the day in a style that you love.

Do a Dress Rehearsal. Get to know your photographer by shooting some engagement photos. You’ll get some great shots and you’ll get a sense of how your photographer works. You can also run through your wedding photos ahead of time. Many couples dress up in their wedding attire before the big day to shoot photos in a relaxed setting without time restrictions.

ask potential photographers these questions 1. May we see your references, portfolio and past wedding samples? 2. Will you be the one photographing/ filming my wedding? 3. What style do you specialize in (candid, portraits, etc.)? 4. Have you ever worked in our wedding venue before? 5. Will someone assist you on the wedding day? 6. Are you familiar with the lighting and layout at our venue(s)? 7. What are your packages and what do they include (number and size of photos, albums, additional costs)? 8. For videographer, what is the price for additional copies? Do we need to provide a song list to be played along with the video? 9. Do you offer overtime? What is the rate? 10. Can we purchase the negatives/ digital files/raw footage? If not, how long do you keep them on file? 11. What are your payment terms? Are there any additional charges we should know about? 12. What is your cancellation policy?

OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS, MANY THINGS about the wedding industry have changed, but one thing that has remained constant is that each new couple that hires me finds themselves overwhelmed by the options available to them and unsure how to narrow down their vendor search. They are usually looking for my professional opinions to guide them. Planning a wedding is a learning process for most couples. I’m here to help. With so many photographers showing beautiful photos on social media, who they’re hiring to document their day is often one of the hardest decisions for couples to make. How can you discern differing styles and what should you look for? How can you possibly know who the best fit is for your wedding? I typically start each of my couples’ photography search off by narrowing down if they like bright and airy photographs or more of a dark style that plays with shadows and lighting. Sometimes they prefer a middle ground or like photos that are more vibrant with lots of color. Then we discuss whether they prefer more traditional photographs or styles where absolutely nothing is posed. Even posed photos can be traditional or more reminiscent of a fashion editorial. Once I have an idea of their style, I can make recommendations that fit within their preferences. If you don’t have a coordinator to help you sort through the options, then any photographer that you might be interested in should be able to provide you with a complete gallery of images from at least one wedding so you can get an idea of what to expect if you hire them. Looking at a whole wedding gives a cohesive overview of the entire day and you’ll see the big picture rather than just the “best of” that you’ll get in a social media feed. As in any art form, photographic style is very specific to the individual artist; the finished product will vary based on how the photographer approaches the shoot, their personality, the angles they choose, what equipment they use and how they edit. Since wedding photos are art that will be part of a couple’s lives forever, hanging in their home and their connection to their wedding day memories, I encourage couples to select a photographer who really speaks to their own style. In order to give some insight into the world of photography, we decided to create an “experiment” to demonstrate how different photographers would each, uniquely, capture the same event.

the EXPERIMENT We chose a beautiful setting - The Parlor at The Pontchartrain Hotel - with controlled lighting (i.e. no changing outdoor light affecting the room and thus the photographs) and styled a luxurious reception with the help of Mitch’s Flowers, True Value Rental, Gambino’s Bakery, InvitoBella and Earthy Stone Treasures. We invited four top-notch photographers to participate in our experiment and each was given one hour to complete a brief shot list we provided. The setting remained the same for each photographer and they were asked to capture the scene in their respective styles. The photographers were asked to bring in whatever lighting and gear they would normally bring to a wedding and edit the images in their style. When styling the decor, we took inspiration from The Parlor itself and wanted to accentuate the beauty of the space. Keeping it natural but modern, we incorporated modern elements with organic details. Mitch’s Flowers continued the magnolia theme from the venue’s dazzling feature wall and added magnolia leaf arrangements to the backs of the Napoleon ghost chairs from True Value Rental. The feature wall mural has some sparkle to it, so we also incorporated sequin linens for the main table to tie in that beautiful shimmer to the design. True Value Rental’s acrylic cake stand tied in perfectly with the overall look; Mitch’s was able to arrange flowers and greenery inside and create a stunning display of flowers beneath the cake. InvitoBella followed the sleek, modern theme with the invitation suite and added a hand painted magnolia envelope liner motif to bring in a soft, elegant touch that also tied in with the magnolia-themed mural. I think the best part about this shoot is that when I look at each set of photos, I am thrilled with them! They’re all just so stunning, yet distinctly different. Some of the photographers brought in their own lighting; some relied just on the available lighting in the space. For each shot requested, we can see how each of them approached it differently both in composition as well as lighting and the angles they chose. I love seeing how each of the photographers interpreted the space differently and yet still provided amazing photos that spoke to each of their own artistic styles. Compare for yourself in the following pages and be sure to look for this feature on our website, theNOWBride.com where you can see video interviews with each of the photographers and more photos from the shoot!

Do you REALLY need

WEDDING VIDEO? WRITTEN BY: Jessica Burke, Publisher New Orleans Weddings Magazine

WHEN IT COMES TO PRIORITIZING SPENDING ON WEDDINGS, many couples often find themselves asking if wedding video is something they really need to allot their precious budget to. Won’t the photos be enough? Is video *really* necessary? If you’re one of these couples, this article is for you. THE CONS OF HIRING A PRO (AND YOUR ALTERNATIVES) Cost is usually what makes most couples hit pause on the topic of hiring someone to video their wedding. Professional video is not inexpensive and can run into the thousands. That money has to come from somewhere, which can mean having to cut back spending some place else. The reason to not hire a professional videographer is quite simply if you just don’t have the money to do so. “If there is no room in the budget, there’s no room in the budget,” says Chad Dyle of Dyle Films. “No one should go into debt to have a wedding video.” If it’s not in the budget to hire a professional, Dyle still suggests finding a way to have some 108 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

video of your wedding captured – it’s that important! – even if it’s giving your cousin your iPhone and having them record your ceremony from the sidelines. THE “PROS” OF HIRING A PRO Of course, it’s always safest to trust a professional with your wedding video. If you hand this responsibility off to a friend, you should be prepared that they may miss important moments. MAKE YOUR MEMORIES COUNT The reality is there are no do-overs on your wedding. You’re investing a lot of money into this day and your photos and video will be your connections to the memories when it’s over. “Some of the biggest advocates for hiring a professional videographer are

brides who didn’t have anyone video their weddings and regret the decision,” shares Dyle. “They’ll come up to us at bridal shows often dragging their friend who’s engaged to our booth, trying to convince them not make the same mistake they did.” If you’re on the fence at all, think about it this way: wouldn’t you love it if you could watch a video of your grandparents’ wedding, hear them say their vows, see them cut their cake and dance their first dance? Of course you would! You can bet your kids and grandkids will want to see your wedding too!

Jessica Salafia + Rhett Ward OCTOBER 12, 2019 PHOTOGRAPHY: North Photography

More than half of the couple’s 140 guests travelled from Australia, including Jess’ grandparents. The couple treated their guests to a truly New Orleans experience including a cocktail hour on the rooftop of the Roosevelt Hotel and a traditional second line band!

“Jess and Rhett’s story dates back to December 2014 when Jess arrived in New Orleans for a two-week holiday to ring in the new year. She was swept off her feet by his Southern charm and he was intrigued by the girl from the Land Down Under. A whirlwind romance ensued before Jess and Rhett decided to embark on a longdistance relationship. After a couple of trips to-and-fro across the globe, they reunited in August 2015 when Jess moved from Australia to the United States. After a magical engagement during Cinderella's Happily Ever After Dinner at Walt Disney World in 2018, Jess and Rhett married on October 12, 2019 at the historic St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans.”

116 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

Jess’ 3-tier wedding cake was fit for a princess - complete with a castle and royal carriage! - and featured decadent flavor profiles, including white velvet and apricot champagne and Italian cream and pistachio. Star Wars fan, Rhett, was treated to a red velvet groom’s cake styled as R2-D2 in a tuxedo.

After the ceremony, the couple posed for photos with their bridal party at the W.P. Brown Mansion on St. Charles Avenue. The 22,000 square foot Romanesque Revival home was built in the early 1900s and is filled with ornate architectural details and opulent antiques, including the footboard of a bed that is believed to have been owned by Marie Antoinette.

Jess wore an Essense of Australia gown from MaeMe The Bridal Boutique, customized with illusion sleeves with lace details. A tiara and 14 foot cathedral length veil, made by Rhett’s mother, Brenda Ward, completed her bridal ensemble.

Margaret Blue + Travis Perkins OCTOBER 12, 2019 PHOTOGRAPHY: Images by Robert T

The couple didn’t have a ring “bear”er, but a ring “dinosaur” according to Margaret’s 3-year-old nephew George, who stomped up the aisle like a dinosaur with the flower girl, Margaret’s niece, Caroline.

HOW THEY MET: “We actually met in high school but were only friends,” says Margaret. Travis went to an all boy’s school next to Margaret’s all girl’s school and they two had several mutual friends. Margaret went to LSU and Travis went to Rhodes College. After Travis received his masters, he moved home to Houston and a mutual friend invited Travis out with Margaret’s group of friends and became part of the group. Margaret and Travis got along so well right away and started dating shortly after. Five years later, Travis surprised Margaret with a wedding proposal on a Friday night. He asked Margaret’s closest friends to fly into Houston to surprise Margaret after he proposed at Margaret’s house.

118 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

Margaret and Travis said their vows in a traditional Catholic Mass at Immaculate Conception Jesuit Church on Baronne Street and then second lined with their guests to the reception at the New Orleans Board of Trade.

The evening closed with a sparkler send off and a romantic carriage ride for Margaret and Travis.

Rebecca Barras + Taylor McLellan MARCH 16, 2019 PHOTOGRAPHY: Elizabeth Wells Photography

THE PROPOSAL, IN TAYLOR’S WORDS: “I found exactly what I was looking for at Adler’s on Canal Street, but the ring setting had to get adjusted to fit the diamond I wanted to put in the center. After a week-long series of wayward events that brought the ring to various locations across the city, and even across the river, it was finally fitted just in time for me to pop the question right before New Year’s 2018 celebrations. The morning that it was finally ready, we had to be in Baton Rouge for an event. I had to enlist my sister and aunt to stall her with shopping at the Mall of Louisiana, and my mom and dad to drive to the Westbank to pick it up and then sneak the ring into our apartment before we got home from BR. My family pulled through like champions. We got home, it was waiting for me hidden in the closet. I sneaked it into my pocket, and we went up to our rooftop view of downtown New Orleans. We had nearly the entire roof to ourselves, and the weather was great, so I took the opportunity. She could tell I was hiding something, so it didn’t take long for me to just make the move. It was one of the most beautiful moments of my life. We popped open a bottle of bubbles, and the rest is history.” 120 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

Rebecca wore a cathedral length lace mantilla veil for the traditional Catholic wedding ceremony at St. Mary’s Italian Church, one of the oldest churches in New Orleans, on Chartres Street.

Rebecca and Taylor’s First Look took place in the gardens of the Ursuline Convent. They shared a private moment, then took photos with their bridal party and family prior to the ceremony.

After a sparkler exit from the reception, Rebecca and Taylor second lined with their guests from Ursuline Convent through the French Quarter to the Hotel Monteleone on Royal Street. The happy couple honeymooned in Italy and shook hands with Pope Francis at the “Sposi Novelli” (newlywed) blessing. No Sicilian-inspired wedding would be complete without a performance of the “Tarantella”, a traditional Italian folk dance, at the reception.

Kate Geer + Jeremy Miller MARCH 22, 2019 PHOTOGRAPHY: Gabby Chapin Photography

“The first look was very special and it was nice to have a private moment with Jeremy,” shares Kate. “It took me a good 10 minutes to reach him because I had to stop to cry tears of joy and excitement. It was a very magical moment.”

“We did a laying on of hands at the end of the ceremony,” shares Kate. “It’s a special prayer with everyone showing support by connecting hands on shoulders. All of our friends and family were there and it had us feeling so supported and special.” THEIR STORY IN KATE’S WORDS: He took me to Christmas in the Oaks at City Park to propose and the lights were all out because it was Christmas Eve. I laughed because it was so dark; it seemed so different and quiet. He drove through the whole park trying to find a light display that was on.... *I didn’t know his plan and I said let’s go tomorrow. He ended up proposing once we got home when I was on the couch with a blanket. He even carved me a ring box out of oak and it is shaped like a flower. As you turn the box open the petals move out and it looks like a sun. He is very creative and I am very blessed.”

Kate and Jeremy’s dogs joined in the ceremony, walking down the aisle with the bridesmaids and posing for photos with the couple afterwards.

After the ceremony, Kate and Jeremy led their family and friends in a second line around Popp Fountain to “When the Saints Go Marching In”.

Abbie Lutenbacher + Kevin Monjure OCTOBER 12, 2019 PHOTOGRAPHY: Brocato Photography Collective

Abbie and Kevin said their vows at St. Anthony of Padua, a church that held a special place in Abbie’s heart. “When my grandmother lived in MidCity she always used to walk to St Anthony’s for church,” shares Abbie. “When I was growing up, she would always talk about how beautiful it was and how much she missed going there. When she was near the end of her life, she asked that if I was going to get married in New Orleans, it be at St Anthony of Padua.”

Kevin gifted Bonfolk socks to his groomsmen, each receiving a unique design, but all with NOLA flair!

Abbie wore her grandmother’s heart pendant necklace on her wedding day and her mother’s veil, but with a unique twist. “I took part of my mom’s veil my grandmother had made and sewed it into the bottom of my dress,” shares Abbie, “and my aunt made part of it into a headpiece I could wear at the reception.”

THE PROPOSAL IN ABBIE’S WORDS: “Kev and I returned to the same Panama City Beach where we met. I had no idea because I had planned the whole thing, desperate for any break after starting my new job. He was begging to go for a walk on the beach when all I wanted to do was get dressed and go to dinner. I was the definition of ‘hangry’ and gave him a hard time all the way down to the beach, [and] I finally have enough and say, “Can we please go back so I can eat?!?” When he turns around and gets down on one knee. I have no idea what he said because I was screaming the entire time!” Abbie and Kevin’s stunning 5-tier wedding cake by Gambino’s Bakery featured a fleur de lis motif and their monogram in royal blue icing. Fresh flowers in soft pastel tones embellished the cake and cake table.

Susan Karimiha + Richard Russo OCTOBER 5, 2019 PHOTOGRAPHY: WeddingLens

The couple planned a Persian wedding as a special ode to Susan’s family’s heritage. Special traditions included a complete Persian Ceremony. This included a full spread called a “Sofreh Aghd,” for the ceremony, an altar which includes very traditional ceremonial items which have specific significance.

The Proposal: Susan had to go to Honduras

“The wedding festivities included a traditional Persian knife dance called the “Raghseh Chagoo” where guests “steal” the cake knife and dance with it and the couple must pay to get it back. Several guests danced with the knife before giving it to the happy couple to cut their wedding cake.

during July of 2018 to conduct research for her PhD at Louisiana State University. Susan planned Richard’s birthday gift - a flight to go with her to Honduras a little early - to enjoy the beaches of Honduras’ Bay Islands and snorkel the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. On the second day of the trip, after taking a water taxi to get dinner at a local restaurant, Richard proposed on the beach.

The reception ended with a traditional New Orleans second line through the streets of the French Quarter.

I asked him how to properly train with weights because he has really nice arms. The conversation continued, we exchanged numbers. A month later I asked him to help me diet for my first bodybuilding competition. We met up at Puccino’s in Metairie and he gave me a diet. We talked for a bit, and I couldn’t help my curiosity so I asked how did he end up in a wheelchair. First response was a drug deal gone bad. I was in shock and questioned if I still wanted him to help me diet down. Then he said he was joking and said it was a shark bite. I didn’t know what to believe but one
