BEFORE YOU SAY “I DO,” you need ask “How Much?” Traditionally, the bride’s family carries the majority of the financial responsibility. But with the cost of weddings growing as well as the average age of couples increasing, many couples are picking up some of the wedding expenses. Grooms’ families are also chipping in more than just the traditional rehearsal dinner and other small expenses. But no matter how the bill is divided, couples need to decide on a budget and stick with it.

Allison Rousseve & Jon Lewis FEBRUARY 24, 2018
WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio | PHOTOGRAPHER: Calvin Gavion, Jr.
ALLISON ROUSSEVE AND JON LEWIS FELL INTO THE SAME CIRCLE of friends as freshmen at Loyola University and they hung out together for years – yet they rarely spoke. They were complete opposites. Lewis is an extrovert, always the life of the party. “Anytime there’s music playing, he’s the first one on the dance floor, singing and entertaining and making people laugh. He thinks he sounds like John Legend,” Rousseve says. She, on the other hand, is an introvert, “quiet and shy,” she admits. But one day during senior year, Lewis heard her laughing with a friend. “He realized, ‘Oh, she does actually have fun,’” Rousseve says. Both had just ended relationships. They began talking about what they valued in a partnership: friendship first and communication. They began dating before their 2012 graduation. In October 2016, Lewis passed the Louisiana bar exam. He told Rousseve his boss at a local law firm was hosting a party to celebrate the achievement. The day of the gathering, Lewis seemingly disappeared. When Rousseve tried to call him, he didn’t answer his phone. That was odd, she thought. Then things got more unusual. “Are you wearing
32 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
your glasses or your contacts tonight?” her mother asked her. Her sister had the same question, adding, “Do you want me to do your makeup?” Rousseve’s parents also insisted on driving her to the party site on St. Charles Avenue. There, Rousseve was ushered towards the pool area. Lewis was standing and waiting. A violinist was performing nearby. A photographer was on hand to capture that moment when Lewis dropped to one knee. When the couple turned around, Rousseve saw that their closest friends and family members had witnessed the proposal. On Feb. 24, 2018, the pair married at Loyola University’s Holy Name of Jesus Church. The reception followed at Kenner’s Chateau Golf and Country Club. For their first dance, the couple chose John Legend’s “So High.” Of course, Lewis couldn’t resist singing along. “In the photos, you can see how he’s singing at the top of his lungs,” Rousseve says. “And I’m like, ‘Oh, please.’” That said, the “quiet and shy” Rousseve never left the dance floor. “Everyone was like, ‘You never sat down. Did you eat?’” she says. “But I knew I’d only get one night like this and I wanted to take full advantage of it.”

Brunch. From the Publisher’s Desk
36 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
“Any excuse for brunch is a good excuse in my book, but in my humble opinion, such a wonderful meal deserves the spotlight as THE wedding celebration.” HEY THERE. IT’S TIME WE TALK BRUNCH - my personal favorite meal. Just the word “brunch” conjures up visions of carefree mornings surrounded by people I love while sipping mimosas (sorry team Bloody Mary – I’m a champagne girl!) all while noshing on yummy food. It’s just a little slice of heaven. Brunch has to be an almost universally loved concept, doesn’t it? Seriously, have you ever met someone who doesn’t like brunch? If you are that rare brunch-hating human (we are probably not going to be friends if you are), this article is not for you, because I’m diving into the deliciousness of brunch wedding events and things to think about while planning one for your very own big day. So let’s get talking, shall we? Traditionally, brunch events have been reserved for showers, bridesmaid gatherings and post-wedding day send offs – the events surrounding the wedding. Any excuse for brunch is a good excuse in my book, but in my humble opinion, such a wonderful meal deserves the spotlight as THE wedding celebration. I know many of you out there agree – I’ve seen an increasing number of couples planning wedding day brunch receptions in the last few years (myself included) and I just love it. I sat down recently with Adam Miller, Director of Catering and Events at St. Charles Avenue’s The Columns Hotel, to talk brunch weddings, a trend he’s seeing more and more couples embracing. “We are designed to host something more New Orleans, like a brunch,” Adam shared with me. “Our first floor space is versatile. We have three private rooms that can be used separately or together to match the couples’ event priorities and budgets.” The 135 year old hotel’s prime location on the oak lined St. Charles street car line and it’s Victorian ambiance draw in couples looking for an intimate event filled with New Orleans flavor.

“Many couples choose a brunch wedding reception because they want a smaller, more relaxed celebration versus a big blow out party with 300 of their “closest” friends.”
38 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
Many couples choose a brunch wedding reception because they want a smaller, more relaxed celebration versus a big blow out party with 300 of their “closest” friends. There might also be budgetary considerations, Adam advises. Since brunch is typically served between 10am and 2pm, many couples find that a brunch can be more affordable than a peak evening hour reception. “We can manage a smaller food and beverage minimum with these earlier events,” Adam explained to me. And while getting more bang for your wedding budget buck is always a good thing, but it’s not the only reason to consider hosting a brunch. Some couples take advantage of the intimate nature of a brunch event to curate their guest list so they can upgrade their menu. “Couples can add interactive food stations, like a gourmet crepe or “build your own omelette” station or include craft cocktails at their bar, or both,” Adam shared. “With a smaller guest count, you can add menu upgrades to meet your minimum and have a luxurious, elegant event that is also affordable.” Two of The Columns’ most popular brunch specialty stations include Creole Shrimp and Grits and Bananas Foster Crepes. (I tried both – cleaned my plate actually! - and can vouch for their yumminess!) Other brunch menu options at The Columns include hand passed hors d’oeuvres such as mini muffalettas, Cajun deviled eggs, and Louisiana Crab Vol-au-vent with white remoulade. Isn’t your mouth watering already? All this being said, you can eat brunch in many, many places in New Orleans, but finding a location with the right “vibe” is so important when planning a brunch wedding reception. In fact, I’ll go as far as to say that ambiance is just as important for a brunch event as the menu. This is one of the reasons I like The Columns. I’m an outdoor dining kind of girl, so of course, the expansive front porch and side terrace are spots I’m immediately drawn to. The towering Oak in front of the hotel with its rustling leaves and the clambering of the street cars add a New Orleans soundtrack to your dining experience here. Of course, The Columns also has those indoor event spaces too and they’re just dripping with historic New Orleans charm. And speaking of soundtrack, what is a wedding without music? A jazz trio is the perfect pairing for a New Orleans wedding brunch. I don’t recommend planning a brunch of any kind without one! If this kind of simple elegance appeals to you, a brunch wedding reception might be the perfect choice for you. Simplicity is, in fact, one of the things Adam tells me his wedding clients love about hosting their events at the hotel. “We can take care of everything they need in-house,” Adam shared at our meeting “from food and beverage to staffing, tables, linens, and chairs. We make it simple and we do everything that we can to make weddings perfect for our clients!” I won’t argue with perfect. Or brunch.
cheers! Brunch and craft cocktails go hand in hand. Here are a few fun options to consider for your New Orleans Jazz Brunch!
Happy Planning (and brunching!)!

WHO HOSTS Image Credit: Images by Robert T
Traditionally, the groom’s family hosts and pays for the Rehearsal Dinner.
WHERE There are no rules for location, but ideally it will be somewhere convenient to the ceremony site (if doing an actual rehearsal). Private residences, restaurants or a unique location special to the couple are all great options.
WHO TO INVITE All immediate family (parents, grandparents, siblings and spouses), members of the wedding party (and their plus ones), and out of town guests; other wedding guests may be invited if the budget allows.
LEVEL OF FORMALITY This is entirely dependent upon the couples’ desires and wedding style and the hosts’ budget. Anything from an informal backyard crawfish boil to the most formal 5 course seated dinner at a restaurant may be chosen.
WHEN TO BOOK Book your rehearsal venue, caterer and other vendors at least 3-6 months prior. If you would like a very popular or specific location, it is wise to reserve your location as far in advance as possible. 40 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
Questions To Ask n Will your ideal location be an appropriate size for your expected guest count? n Is there convenient and sufficient parking available? n Will you want to bring in entertainment (Jazz Trio? Piano player?)? n Do you want a formal, seated rehearsal or something more casual? What places do you love that might be good locations for this event? n Will you want to bring in décor and florals? n Will you want a photographer or videographer to capture this party? n Will you want to give any formal speeches?
Calcasieu caters events of all types and sizes, including Mardi Gras balls, weddings, outdoor Fais-Do-Dos and chef-driven gatherings at the venue of your choice. Calcasieu’s unwavering commitment to excellence and a focus on providing you a unique location to Gather.Dine.Celebrate. will certainly make your event an experience to remember!

Elisabeth Clark & Luke Grohman NOVEMBER 17, 2017
WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio | PHOTOGRAPHER: Carolyn Seibert
ELISABETH GROHMAN REMEMBERS WHEN AND WHERE SHE FIRST saw Luke Grohman, the man who would become her husband. It was May of 2013 at Lager’s International Ale House. Elisabeth, a Chicago native, went to the sports-friendly bar in the hopes of seeing her beloved Blackhawks play in the Stanley Cup playoffs. When she asked the bartender if he could put the game on, he gestured to a man sitting at the other end of the bar. There was one TV with the game on… apparently “to satisfy that guy.” Elisabeth looked at the man. Another hockey fan in never-remotelyfreezing southeastern Louisiana? Cute, she thought. Then she saw he was wearing a Detroit Red Wings jersey. “I thought, ‘Well, that stinks. Why can’t he have a Blackhawks jersey on?’” Elisabeth, a teacher, recalls. But she really wanted to watch that game, so she sat down. The smack talk started immediately. They also found they shared a love of beer, sports and ‘90s grunge music. Luke, a construction manager, had moved to New Orleans from northern Michigan. Despite their common interests, when Luke suggested they watch the series together, Elisabeth hesitated. He’d also told her he enjoyed sport hunting, something the city girl found unseemly. She asked her roommates what they thought. Absolutely not, they said.
44 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
Still, she returned to Lager’s for the next game and the five after that. Two years later on his own birthday, Luke offered Elisabeth his grandmother’s ring which he’d kept hidden for months in the gun case he knew she’d never open. “He said he wanted the best birthday gift for the rest of his life,” Elisabeth says. They married on November 17, 2017 at St. Louis Cathedral with a reception at Race & Religious. Since most guests were out-of-towners, the couple wanted to provide “the full New Orleans experience.” That began before the wedding with a fire truck ride through the French Quarter with throws to be, well, thrown. Luke’s father, instead, put on a pair of bedazzled and feathered shades Elisabeth, a Krewe of Iris member, had provided. “That was my favorite part. He looked like Elton John,” Elisabeth says. “He said, ‘Why would I throw away a pair of sunglasses?’” The reception included a second line, king cake and traditional NOLA music. (A cake topper of a bride and groom wearing hockey jerseys was nixed by their planner.) Among the joyful guests were Elisabeth’s former roommates. “They said, ‘It’s a good thing you didn’t listen to us,’” she recalls. She agreed..

Jocelyn Amador & Jorge Gandour APRIL 28, 2018
WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio | PHOTOGRAPHER: Lauren Carroll Photography
AS THE SUN SET OVER DESTREHAN PLANTATION ON APRIL 28TH, Jocelyn Amador carefully made her way down the aisle towards her future husband, Jorge Gandour. Tears – of both joy and sorrow --flowed freely. It had been a long and challenging journey towards that moment. Jorge’s beloved uncle Jacob had died eight months earlier after a short illness, throwing him into a deep depression. A few months after that, Jocelyn was diagnosed with a rare blood disease that required treatments that left her exhausted. The couple moved their wedding date multiple times “hoping I would be strong enough to walk and enjoy the wedding.” “I was jaundiced and still swollen from medications,” Jocelyn says. “I feared something would happen and I’d have to go to the emergency room or that I wouldn’t fit in my dress or even my shoes.” So when Jocelyn made her way to Jorge as more than 100 of their friends and family members watched, there were tears everywhere – among the bridal party, the guests and the couple themselves. “I choked and cried saying our vows,” Jorge says. “My best man had to pat me on the back so I could keep it together.” The pair had first met in a Baton Rouge bar more than a decade earlier,
72 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
when Jorge was interested in one of Jocelyn’s friends. Instead of sharing her own phone number with Jorge, the friend gave him Jocelyn’s. They laughed the next day when they realized what had happened – and stayed on the phone for more than an hour. Still, theirs was only a friendship, albeit one in which they talked on the phone often and shared their most personal problems. Jocelyn moved to New Orleans to attend Tulane University and was more focused on her studies than dating. Jorge tried to date other women, but “it was hard,” he says. “I thought if I could just hang out more with her, this could be more than a friendship.” Jorge was right. In 2015, after six years of dating the pair took a trip to Destin, one of their favorite places. One evening, armed with flashlights, mini-shovels and buckets, they went night crabbing. That’s when Jorge went down on one knee. “I told her I loved her and I couldn’t see myself with anyone else and would she make me the happiest man alive by being my wife?” Jorge says. “I was nervous she’d say no! Or worse, I’d drop the ring in the sand.” Of course, Jocelyn said yes. And Jorge didn’t drop the ring.

Every aspect of your wedding should be beautiful - including the food. In this editorial we explore decorative garnishes with Pigeon Caterers. N.O.W.: What are the current trends in garnishes and presentation in the catering world? Do you have any favorites? PIGEON: We have been seeing a lot of very creative garnishes, from smoking dishes to lighting them on fire! N.O.W.: In your opinion, how can this detail (garnishes) impact the overall impression of your event? PIGEON: Garnishes enhance the dish to make it more appealing and your guests more willing to try them. As humans we eat with our eyes first, so you are more willing to try a salad with the vegetables in different shapes and sizes sporadically (strategically) placed on a plate versus just a bowl of lettuce with veggies plopped on top. The dish itself must be almost too pretty to eat. That, then, makes it that much more appealing.

“Garnishes enhance the dish to make it more appealing and your guests more willing to try them.” N.O.W.: Why is the presentation of their wedding menu something engaged couples should consider? PIGEON: Garnishes can help theme up the menu along with the style of the reception. For example, a late-night pass of sliders can be served in checkered boats with paper wrapping for a more casual feel. The same sliders can be presented as an open face crab cake on brioche with melted smoked cheddar and gourmet pickle served on an antique china plate. Same dish, but the details determine the style and the feel it gives. N.O.W.: What is Pigeon’s philosophy and approach to presentation/garnish? PIGEON: We always ask ourselves, “are you willing to throw your calorie count out

Katie Breaux & Brian Lauziere FEBRUARY 17, 2018
WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio | PHOTOGRAPHER: Lauren Carroll Photography
KATIE BREAUX AND BRIAN LAUZIERE BOTH LOVE MOVIES AND Broadway shows, so it’s not surprising that they met on the set of one and got engaged after enjoying the other. First, the meeting. Brian moved to New Orleans from Indiana in 2011 to work in the local film industry, or “Hollywood South” as many call the region. In 2013, he was working on the comedy “Walk of Fame.” Katie was on set as an extra. It was hard for her to miss Brian, the handsome assistant director who called “Cut” in between takes and juggled oranges when things were slow. At the end of the day, she asked him for his name. “We’ve been together ever since,” Katie says. Their first date? A production of “Les Miserables.” Over the next four years, they enjoyed movies at local theaters and touring Broadway productions that stopped at the Saenger Theatre. Now, the proposal: Katie, a fan of all things Disney, was thrilled when Brian got tickets for “The Lion King” when it came to town. After the show – “It was fantastic!” Katie says – , the couple ran into a group of their friends outside the
80 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
theater. They handed Katie a stuffed lion toy while Brian took a knee. The lion had a tag dangling from around its neck, “Will you marry me?” To paraphrase “The Lion King’s” biggest song, yes, they could feel the love that night. “I was in disbelief. I always knew one day it would happen for us, but I really thought I would’ve known when,” Katie says. “It was such a magical night.” On Feb. 17, as 220 friends and family members watched, and an a cappella compilation of Disney love songs played, Katie joined Brian on the front steps of Southern Oaks Plantation to take their wedding vows. As guests moved to the reception that followed, they were greeted with songs from Broadway shows including “Phantom of the Opera,” “Rent,” “Hamilton” and “Grease.” Picking just the right song for their first dance as a married couple was a challenge, Katie says – until they heard “Only Us” from the musical “Dear Evan Hansen.” “We both fell in love with the song. It just felt right and created room for us to do a beautiful waltz, which we took classes to learn,” Katie says. “It was definitely a unique ‘That’s a Katie and Brian thing to do.’”

Kristin Byrd & Brandon Bush NOVEMBER 4, 2017
WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio | PHOTOGRAPHER: Calvin Gavion, Jr.
SAY WHAT YOU WANT ABOUT THE DRAWBACKS OF SOCIAL MEDIA. Kristin Byrd and Brandon Bush are forever fans. In 2009, Kristin posted a video of herself “dancing silly” on Facebook. Brandon, who’d connected to Kristin via a mutual friend but had never met her, saw the clip and was drawn to the fun-loving dancer. After hours of messaging, they exchanged phone numbers. Brandon was a student at the University of Louisiana Lafayette while Kristin studied at Xavier University. After two months of exchanging messages, the pair met face-to-face -- for real – when Kristin was visiting a friend in Lafayette. A few months after that, they were a couple. Kristin loves Disney World. Brandon had never visited. Their first trip together came early in their relationship. “I was a bit nervous it wouldn’t meet his expectations … but going to Disney brought out the kid in him,” Kristin says. “We had such an amazing time. It’s the first big trip he ever took and it’s the first vacation we ever went on together.” They had such a great time that they went again. And again. On that third trip, they were watching evening fireworks from their table at the California
84 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
Grill when Brandon asked their server to take a photo of them with the bright lights exploding in the background. When Kristin turned from the window, Brandon took a knee and said, “Since we are in Disney, I want you to be my princess forever. Will you marry me? “Of course, I said yes and cried like a baby,” Kristin says. “The week before, he’d asked my dad for my hand in marriage. He even asked my fouryear-old niece for her permission, which I thought was so sweet.” On November 4th, 300 guests gathered to watch the couple exchange vows at St. Peter Claver Church, the same church where Kristin’s sister and two cousins had married. Her maternal grandmother, the only living grandparent on either side, sagely declared the bride “beautiful.’ “My grandmother is a very strong woman and not very emotional, but on my wedding day, she cried as I walked down the aisle,” Kristin says. A reception followed at The Cannery. The New Breed Brass Band got the party started with a Second Line. A food truck from Café du Monde serving coffee and fresh beignets helped close the evening. “Seeing everything come together – after all of the phone calls, the meetings, the stress – was so worth it,” Kristin says. “It was amazing.”

Madeline Fortino & Zachary Chizmar JUNE 1, 2018
WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio | PHOTOGRAPHER: Megan Crawford Photography
ZACHARY CHIZMAR ALWAYS LIKED TO CREATE PUNS BASED ON his girlfriend Madeline Fortino’s name. It wasn’t Mardi Gras. It was “Maddie Gras.” He joked that he wouldn’t get “married.” He’d get “maddied.” So Madeline shouldn’t have been that surprised when, after a romantic Valentine’s Day dinner in 2017, a chocolate dessert arrived with a message frosted on top, “Will you Maddie me?” “I was crying and laughing,” Madeline says. “I couldn’t believe he remembered the joke.” The Gretna native had met the South Florida transplant on a blind date three years earlier. Madeline was working for a start-up company focused on cloud-based payments. Zachary, a Tulane graduate, had just begun his first year of studies at the university’s medical school. Zachary picked her up at her Gentilly apartment and drove them Uptown for dinner. “I thought he was so handsome, I had to stop myself from staring at him the whole ride over to the restaurant,” Madeline says. “We hit it off immediately.” The couple found they had a shared love for New Orleans food and music and even similar preferences when it came to wine. They began dating and, while medical school can be all consuming, they focused on weekend fun: brunches, concerts, festivals.
96 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
“We made it work,” Madeline says. “During really busy weeks we would spend time in a coffee shop together so he could study and I could work.” In 2016, Zachary and Madeline moved to a Mid-City apartment together. Then they made an even deeper commitment to each other -- by adopting a Corgi puppy they named Scout. About two years later, on June 1, Scout tottled down the aisle at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, as Madeline and Zachary’s proud “flower girl/dog.” “She was so cute,” Madeline says. “Our dog being there was definitely a fan favorite.” Still, it’s safe to say the bride, who entered to the Beatles’ “Blackbird,” stole the show. She and Zachary exchanged personalized wedding vows. “We kept them sweet and funny because I knew I was bound to cry if they were too emotional,” Madeline says. “I cried anyway!” During the celebration that followed, the pair grooved to Ray Charles’ “I Got A Woman” while doing whiskey shots with guests during the traditional “money dance;” the best man ended years of debate by finally admitting he’d stolen a Reuben sandwich from the groom in 2013; and Scout appeared in the personalized cake pulls created by the bride’s mother. “It was amazing,” Madeline says.

WHETHER YOU’RE “A LITTLE BIT COUNTRY” or he’s “a little bit rock ‘n’ roll,” the entertainment needs to be accommodating to please you, your family and guests. New Orleans musicians can provide that versatility from classical music ensembles to funk bands. You might also choose to have additional entertainment, such as a photo booth or live event painter at your wedding! Choose your entertainment with as much care as you would with other items for your wedding.

STYLE
Dress Design 101 Written by Sofie Lechat
YOU ARE WALKING DOWN THE AISLE. You are glowing with joy as you get closer to your love and your eyes embrace. You will never forget that look…eyes twinkling at just the sight of you and lips breathing the word "wow." Now, let us look back a few months before this moment. You have walked into a bridal salon for the first time and see an overwhelming number of dresses. Where, oh where, do you start? First of all, never trust the hanger. What your perfect dress looks like on you and what it looks like on the hanger are two entirely different things. You can't judge a dress without giving it a try. Keep in mind that the store sample may be entirely too big or too small for you. You may have to use a bit of imagination in these first stages, but you should be able to tell if the dress is worth further consideration. While it’s said that it’s the clothes that make a man, it is the bride that makes a dress.
SILHOUETTE It's such a beautiful word, but what does it mean? The silhouette of a dress is the overall shape it creates. Your own shape will often help you choose the best silhouette for your dress.
102 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
BALL GOWN This silhouette inspires visions of opulent balls with sparkling crystal chandeliers and elegant couples dancing across brilliantly polished marble floors. Often paired with a corsetstyle bodice, the full skirt of a ball gown will flatter a pearshaped figure. This silhouette may not be the best choice, though, for full figured women or women who are very petite. Gown by Justin Alexander
A-LINE The most flattering of silhouettes is the A-line. True to its name, the A-line silhouette is shaped like an “A”. A-line gowns generally have only vertical seams that often run from neckline to hemline and the skirt flares from a natural or drop waist. This silhouette will cover a multitude of chocolate sundae sins. Gown by Pronovias
EMPIRE An Empire silhouette creates a much straighter line and doesn't hug the body as much as an A-line silhouette does. Instead of emphasizing the waistline, an empire silhouette creates a less-defined body shape. You will know an Empire silhouette by a seam that falls just below the bust line. This silhouette looks great on most brides, but those with a large bust may want to avoid this style. Gown by Leanne Marshall
SHEATH This silhouette is, quite simply, loosely form-fitting gowns that tend to drape softly instead of hugging the body. Sheath silhouettes are often made of very light fabrics like chiffon and can tend to emphasize imperfections. This silhouette will look best on tall, slim brides. Gown by Theia
MERMAID If you have knockout curves and want to show them off, this is the silhouette for you. A mermaid dress silhouette tightly hugs the body from the neckline to the knees and then flares out to create a "mermaid tail." Gown by Mori Lee
CONSIDER THE NECKLINE The neckline of your dress is an important decision to make, but with numerous styles, how do you choose? The most important thing to remember is never to choose a particular style just because it is popular. You want to choose the neckline that is most flattering on you. Something to think about when choosing your neckline is the type of top you wear most often to go out in. This answer will give you a good starting point to work from. As a general rule, a scooped neckline looks good on everyone because it doesn't over-emphasize any one area. Variations of a scooped neckline are the Jewel neckline which is a high, rounded neckline that generally starts at the base of the neck, the Bateau neckline that starts about an inch below the shoulder (creating an off-the-shoulder look), and the Portrait neckline that is similar to the Bateau neckline, except that the neckline stands away from the body creating a collar-like effect. Another neckline that looks great on most brides is a square neckline. This neckline is a simple, straight line. You find this neckline most often on strapless dresses and dresses with spaghetti straps. A Sweetheart neckline creates a heart shape at the bust and shows a small amount of cleavage. This style also looks flattering on most brides. Halter necklines are wonderful for women with great shoulders and backs. It is important to note that women with a large bust may look top-heavy in a halter. WRAP IT UP! You will know when you've found the perfect dress because it is the one that makes you feel beautiful when you're wearing it. This confidence will add a sparkle to your eyes and make your smile brighter as you walk down the aisle. Now go get that "wow!" theNOWBride.com | N.O.W | 103

Aubrie George & Clayton Harris APRIL 28, 2018
WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio | PHOTOGRAPHER: Eau Claire Photographics
AUBRIE GEORGE AND CLAYTON HARRIS WENT FROM “NICE TO meet you” to “I love you” within a month. “The horrible cliche of ‘When you know, you know’ is true.” Aubrie says. “The ‘I love yous’ were pretty easy. I had been feeling it but thought I might be crazy because it was so quick. When he said it first, it burst out of my mouth.” But first dates first. The pair had mutual friends and in July 2016, Clayton reached out to Aubrie on Facebook and asked her to go out with him. It was the night after her mid-week birthday celebration and Aubrie remembers wanting to cancel the meeting because she wasn’t feeling well and “the last thing I wanted to do was go on a first date … I decided to push through it and go but I was only going to stay for ONE drink.” One drink turned into three – and a second date. And so on and so on. During their 18-month courtship, Aubrie and Clayton introduced their families, which included Clayton’s two children, Brady, 9, and Amelia, 4, and Aubrie’s nephew, Thomas, age 7. On Thanksgiving Eve 2017, the couple drove to Aubrie’s aunt’s house in Baton Rouge. They got a late start – Aubrie didn’t see any reason to rush – and she noticed that Clayton seemed odd.
108 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
“He seemed antsy and ready to go and I didn’t know why,” she says. “Once we got there, it was beautifully decorated for the holidays and there were twinkle lights all over their pier leading out on to the lake. He took me to the end of the pier and, surrounded by the lights, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.” When they returned to the house, their families were waiting with glasses of Champagne. “I was the only one that didn’t know it was happening,” Aubrie says. On April 28th, more than 250 guests watched Aubrie and Clayton marry at Il Mercato on Magazine Street. Aubrie had been a bridesmaid or maid of honor for 18 different friends before that day so reciprocating wasn’t an option. Instead, Aubrie’s sister stood as her witness and 10 of her friends’ daughters served as flower girls. Amelia, as head flower girl, wore a pink ribbon in her hair. Brady and Thomas shared ring bearer duties. All in all, Aubrie says, the day was perfect. “Falling in love and marrying him was the easiest thing I’ve ever done,” she says.

EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE, EXFOLIATE! Six months before the wedding, it is important to start exfoliating your skin. Why? Exfoliation removes dead skin cells to improve radiance and enhance absorption of brightening products, such as Glo Skin Beauty’s Brightening or Lightening Serum. Start exfoliating once a week and increase to two to three times a week depending on how well your skin tolerates it. Following each exfoliation session, a calming, hydrating mask should be applied to your skin. You should also visit your esthetician to maintain results (Shultz recommends scheduling these visits every 4 weeks). At this time, you should discuss any treatments that should be done closer to the wedding date. Dehydration causes the skin to look dull and sallow. Jennifer LaGreco, licensed esthetician at About Face of New Orleans, recommends applying hydrating masks as often as your skin is thirsty for it. One of the most popular facial treatments leading up to the wedding day is the Repechage Four Layer Facial. “Not only will this facial treatment hydrate your skin,” shares LaGreco, “it will also calm any redness and allow the skin to portray a natural glow. Having this treatment one week to 4 days prior to the wedding will create a smooth canvas for your bridal makeup.“ So there you have it! While it may be stressful to plan every aspect of your big day, you don’t have to let it show through your skin. Take the proper steps to ensure you have the perfect skin for your wedding and don’t wait til the last minute to start!

Robyn Bowers & Brent Holtz MARCH 18, 2018
WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio | PHOTOGRAPHER: North Photography & HD Video
ROBYN BOWERS AND BRENT HOLTZ WORK AND LIVE IN DALLAS, but New Orleans was an important part of their courtship. Robyn, who grew up in Mississippi, spent holidays at her grandparents’ city home. Soon after she and Brent met at a work party in July 2015, she introduced the Illinois native to the city she calls a second home. “Within hours of us being in the French Quarter, he was having a blast,” Robyn says. “He fell in love with the city and its culture.” Over the next year and a half, there were a dozen more trips to Louisiana, two Great Danes, Dallas Stars season tickets, weekends boating, a co-ed volleyball team – but no talk of marriage. In fact, Robyn noticed Brent would change the subject when she brought it up. For Valentine’s Day 2017, he gave her a pair of diamond stud earrings, adding, “Sorry they are so small. I ordered them online and didn’t realize how expensive diamonds were. I thought they’d be bigger.” “Of course, my immediate gut-wrenching thought was, ‘Oh my gosh. He doesn’t know how much diamonds cost. He hasn’t even been shopping for a ring yet,’” Robyn says. “Little did I know he had bought the ring months prior and was waiting for the following weekend to propose. The small
114 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
diamonds comment was just to throw me off – and it worked!” The proposal came in Victory Park outside American Airlines Center before a hockey game between the Dallas Stars and the Chicago Blackhawks. After, the pair went to a nearby bar, The Happiest Hour, where more than 20 of their closest friends waved and cheered from the secondfloor balcony. “I still get chills remembering how special and happy that moment was and realizing how much he had planned it,” Robyn says. On March 31st, Robyn’s uncle, a pastor, married the pair at the rooftop Riverview Room in the French Quarter. When the ceremony ended, the “Harlem Shake” began playing. One guest awkwardly stood up and started dancing. A few beats later, the entire wedding party joined in. “We wanted to end the ceremony with a surprise for our guests and kick start the reception,” Robyn says. “It went down perfectly and the looks on our guests’ faces were priceless.” A sparkler send-off and a post-reception Second Line brought guests to Hotel Monteleone, where the party continued in the Carousel Bar. “The entire day,” Robyn says, “was filled with smiles and happiness.”

The Be Selfish Bride 10 Things Inquiring Brides Want to Know By Staci Lewis
Q. I’ve just become engaged. Where do I start? A. This is a very popular question. The answer is to start by creating a budget. You and your fiancé(e) should sit down and figure out the number that you are BOTH comfortable with spending. You are the only ones who truly know what works for the two of you. Do this at the beginning of the planning process, so that it does not become a problem down the line. Q. How much does a typical New Orleans Wedding cost? A. The average cost of a New Orleans wedding is approximately $35,000. The actual amount, though, really depends on you and your fiancé(e)’s vision and style. Every wedding is different, no two weddings are the same, so of course this will vary per couple. Q. What is the best way to cut costs when planning my wedding? A. I know some of you are not going to like this answer, but it’s the honest truth. Decrease your guest list! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this is the absolute best way to save on your budget. Your guest count determines everything including: food, bar, tables, chairs, centerpieces, etc. The smaller your guest list, the lower your cost. Q. What is the best day of the week to get married? A. I actually get this question 118 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
more often than one would think. The most popular day and most expensive day and time is a Saturday evening. If you are wanting to save hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars, consider a Friday evening, Sunday or even a Saturday brunch day wedding instead. Q. Is a wedding planner a necessity? A. Of course, as a planner I am going to say YES! (LOL) But seriously, every couple, should have that neutral and calm person throughout their entire planning experience. Weddings can take on a life of their own, and as a planner, I know how to navigate through all of the curves that “wedding life” throws at you. A planner’s expertise saves you time AND money! Q. How do I create my guest list? A. Your wedding ceremony and reception should be filled with the folks who genuinely want the best for you and your marriage. When considering potential guests, ask yourself this question to determine if they should make the list: “Did this person call me on my birthday OR randomly check to see if I was ok this year?” If you say NO, then there’s your answer. Q. When should I send out invitations? A. If you have opted to send save the dates, then your guests have a good idea of your wedding
“Be a Selfish Bride, not a Bridezilla.” ~Staci Lewis
date. The formal invitation should be ordered 4-5 months before your wedding and mailed out 2-3 months before your wedding. Q. Which is the correct side for the Bride/Groom? A. Normally and traditionally, the bride stands on the left side (facing the altar) and the groom stands on the right side. I always advise my clients to set their own traditions and to do what feels right for their own wedding. Q. Should I opt for a cash bar or an open bar? A. Your wedding is the first celebration that you are hosting as a married couple. You want your guests to feel at home and enjoy every aspect of your special day. Please do not have your guests pay for their drinks. You can choose a less expensive beer & wine only bar, cocktail hour only bar or choose non-alcoholic drinks and just opt for a champagne toast. Q. What do I need to do in order to incorporate a second line parade into my wedding? A. In New Orleans, what’s a wedding without a second line ending, right? To end your big day in true New Orleans fashion, you would need a brass band, second line umbrellas (for the newlyweds) and handkerchiefs (for the guests). If you are wanting your own parade on the streets of New Orleans, a permit from the City is required as well as a police escort.

n May we see references and your portfolio? n Tell us about previous weddings you’ve coordinated. n Have you planned weddings similar to ours (size/traditions/venues/etc)? n How much or how little are you willing to handle? n What services do you offer? Planning? Interview 3 potentials in each vendor category before making your selection.
Contracts 101
n Get everything in writing and make sure you’re clear on all the terms. A verbal agreement may seem like a good deal at the time, but without a written agreement, your spoken understanding doesn’t have much merit. It may seem uncomfortable to ask for every detail in writing, but it’s worth it in the long run, especially if you need to reference the written agreement in the future. n A contract should also cover payment timelines. An industry standard in catering is to pay the estimated food and beverage costs 30 days prior to the event, which is non-refundable. n Check with your vendors about their substitution policies too. A caterer for example, may want to substitute Chilean salmon with Alaskan salmon because of what’s in season or pricing differences. It may not be a big deal for you and you and your fiancé(e), but it’s fair that you should know about the possible changes.

WEDDING PLANNING IS FUN AND EXCITING, but it’s also a business. As a bride, you need to be business savvy as you finalize all the details of your big day. One of the most crucial things to consider is having a clear and solid contract for every wedding vendor and service.
www..LydiaNobleEvents.com
NOLA
CONTRACT TIMELINES n To make sure you’re getting good service, a good product and a good contract, get quotes from two to three other vendors in each category. n Once you’ve found a vendor you like, make sure you seal the deal in a reasonable amount of time. The timeline for signing a contract can vary, but typically contract timelines can be as short as 24 hours or as long as two weeks. n Most of the time, a contract is considered final once it’s signed by both parties. Still you may have some flexibility if you need it. n Ask your vendors if they allow changes or modifications to a contract. They may allow it, but they may charge extra for the courtesy. For liability reasons, most vendors want to make sure they’re covered in case of an accident or wedding day mishap. With all vendors, make sure you have a backup plan in case of an emergency and always try to be calm and fair. Remember having a contract is a good thing. It protects you and your vendors on your special day. theNOWBride.com | N.O.W | 121

Brandon Rizzuto & Stephanie Austin MAY 12, 2018
WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio | PHOTOGRAPHER: Images by Robert T
WHEN BRANDON RIZZUTO SAW STEPHANIE AUSTIN’S PHOTO ON A friend’s Facebook page, he knew he had to meet her. One day at work, he stole a mutual friend’s phone and sent Stephanie a text message, ostensibly from their friend: This great guy, Brandon, was newly single. Was Stephanie free to meet for drinks that night? Stephanie hesitated. Her “friend” assured her that Brandon was worth meeting: Really nice, super handsome, very single. The “friend” was very convincing. Stephanie agreed. That night, the pair met at Winston’s Pub in Metairie. Brandon’s first impression? “She was much more beautiful than her Facebook photos,” he says. “We were immediately easy around each other.” Stephanie, too, was struck by how comfortable she felt talking to Brandon. They both loved TV’s “Family Guy;” were die-hard Saints fans; and enjoyed trying new restaurants and trips to the beach. “We talked for hours. We thought all the same things were funny,” she remembers. “We basically shut down Winston’s.” Stephanie was sold – even when she learned it had been Brandon who’d initially texted her -- but there was one more hurdle for Brandon: Sparkle,
126 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
Stephanie’s spoiled “chiweenie,” a Chihuahua-Dachshund mix. “I was worried how she would react to him,” Stephanie says. “He took her for rides, walks and bought her new toys all the time. I think that’s part of why I fell for him. He treated her like she was his fur baby, too.” Roughly two years later, Stephanie was lying in bed when Sparkle came into the room with two items tied around her neck: One was a note featuring an image of a dog wearing prisoner’s stripes with a ball and chain around its front paw. The message: “INCARCERATION occurs 5X more often in DOGS without DADS. Save ME from a life of CRIME. PLEASE SAY YES!!” The second item? A diamond engagement ring. “It was perfect!” Stephanie says. “I loved that Sparkle was part of our special day!” On May 12th, about 70 guests gathered in the courtyard of the House of Blues to watch Stephanie and Brandon exchange vows. A reception for 300 followed at the same venue, which had been the site of one of the couple’s first dates. “It felt like we were going back to where it all started,” Stephanie says. “I couldn’t have pictured a more perfect way to marry my best friend.”

Shannon Beightol & Ken Crotwell JUNE 16, 2018
WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio | PHOTOGRAPHER: Sully Clemmer
FOR YEARS, SHANNON BEIGHTOL AND KEN CROTWELL KEPT THEIR relationship purely professional. Ken was a manager at a Jackson, Miss. restaurant when Shannon joined the staff. He was immediately taken with her dark hair and expressive eyes – but he said nothing. Shannon considered Ken “my boss, friend and mentor” - and ignored the sparks between them. Shannon often shared stories from her dating life. Ken was always eager to hear them. “Thankfully for me, most of her dates did not go as expected,” he says. “Neither of us knew where these in-depth conversations would lead.” The couple’s first official outing as a couple was to a coworker’s wedding, “a date that still continues to this day,” Ken says. Trips to New Orleans are regular parts of their lives: Ken is a native and a longtime member of the Krewe of Bacchus and the Rolling Elvi. Shannon grew up in Crowley. “Eating is a major form of entertainment for us and there is no better place to indulge than New Orleans,” Ken says. “Growing up in our respective households you could not come for a visit without eating a meal, whether it was a boiling pot of shrimp, crawfish or crabs; a pot of gumbo or jambalaya; or a big muffuletta sandwich - you were going to eat.”
On June 16th, Shannon and Ken said “I do” at Race and Religious. The second marriage for both, they wanted the ceremony “to be holy and reverent, but also fun,” featuring friends, family and music. The couple’s seven combined children stood alongside them while a friend served as officiant. In a nod to his love of Elvis, Ken wore a blue suit designed by Memphis’ Lansky Brothers, one-time clothiers to the late King of Rock and Roll. Shannon and her attendants wore blue suede shoes. A friend sang Elvis’ “Can’t Help Falling Love” mixed with “Love Me Tender.” The reception featured a whiskey and cigar tasting room decorated with images of Elvis. And, “of course you cannot have a New Orleans wedding without a Second Line,” Ken says. Members of the Rolling Elvi fronted Shannon and Ken’s parade. As the reception wound down and most guests headed to bed, a small core group of friends and family gathered around Shannon and Ken. “Shannon’s cousins were singing and playing guitars into the wee hours, one of her family’s great traditions after those big Cajun meals in Crowley,” Ken says. “It was a very special time.”
