their story IT WAS A PROPOSAL THAT JUSTIN SMALL – and British pop star Jessie J -- will never forget. The singer was on stage at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, Justin and his long-time partner, Kane Honea, were in the audience. Kane and Jessie J locked eyes and the singer leaned down to talk to him. The next thing Justin knew, Kane was on stage, mike in hand, making jokes and winning over the crowd. “I stood by confused and clueless about what was happening,” Justin recalls. Then “Kane pulled me up on stage with him and asked me to marry him in front of everyone. The crowd went absolutely wild! It was a moment I will never forget.” Their love story had begun a decade earlier, when both were in college. Despite having grown up in the same small town of 13,000, the pair knew of each other, but they didn’t know each other, until a mutual friend brought them together. As Kane likes to say, “Justin went to a different high school and was two whole grades ahead of me.” Although they’d called California home since graduating college, the two Southern men chose New Orleans for their wedding. On May 11, they exchanged personalized vows in front of 170 guests at The Civic Theatre. The celebration that followed included a Second Line which featured both grooms waving gold-fringed black umbrellas. Justin, the party planner, had designed nearly every detail of their big day. When he couldn’t find a guest book that was up to his standards, he decided to make his own, taking recipes from both men’s families and compiling them in a book illustrated with photos of the couple and the meals. Guests could sign on any page. “This book is now one of my favorite possessions because each time I use it to cook I get to read a sweet message from one of our wedding guests,” Justin says. There was one thing that happened on the wedding day that not even Justin the planner expected: Jessie J sent them a video congratulating them and wishing them the best. “It was a really cool moment,” says Justin, noting he couldn’t choose just one favorite moment from the day. “The most memorable thing of all was the overwhelming love and support we felt being surrounded by our families, friends and loved ones. Looking around the room at our guests’ faces, all the smiles and laughter, was truly one of the most touching things in the world.”

What's Your
WEDDING
Style? WRITTEN BY: Holly Lafferty

You’re Low-Maintenance! You want to put your own touch on your wedding, even if it breaks with tradition. What’s most important to you are the vows you’re making, not where or how you make them. You want everyone at the event to be comfortable and relaxed, and that means having a calm, casual atmosphere. As long as you’re with the people you love, your personality will shine through on your big day. Whether this means having guys as your bridesmaids, choosing a White Stripes song for your walk down the aisle, or wearing sneakers under your dress, your wedding will surely be a memorable occasion for every-one involved!
Mostly B’s You’re Romantic! You’ve dreamt of this day since you could say ‘wedding', and you want all of the traditional touches that come with it. You want something classy and elegant that celebrates the love you and your fiancé(e) have for each other, and that means involving all of your close family and friends on your big day. Including some family, traditions will go a long way in completing the fantasy. When your younger brother performs at the ceremony or your new spouse reads a poem aloud to you, you will treasure those moments forever.
Mostly C’s You love to be in the spotlight! You know what you want, and you expect to get it. Your wedding day is the one day that you can be a little self-indulgent and not feel guilty about it, so you’re going to enjoy it! You’re dreaming of a grand affair, with all of the extras that make a wedding genuinely memorable. From a huge wedding party to an unforgettable reception, you want to celebrate your day in style. You know this day only comes once-in-a-lifetime, so you want to make the most of it. Enjoy your day in the spotlight…you deserve it! theNOWBride.com | N.O.W | 37

Your Rehearsal Dinner THE REHEARSAL DINNER IS THE TIME TO REFLECT and enjoy the company of close friends and family before tomorrow’s big event. It’s a wonderful time to present gifts to family members and the wedding party and thank them for supporting you during all of your wedding festivities. Restaurants, hotels and other establishments in NEW ORLEANS WEDDINGS MAGAZINE are some of the most beautiful in the country. Visit some of our amazing vendors and sample what they have to offer!
THE BASICS WHO HOSTS Traditionally, the groom’s family hosts and pays for the Rehearsal Dinner.
WHERE There are no rules for location, but ideally it will be somewhere convenient to the ceremony site (if doing an actual rehearsal). Private residences, restaurants or a unique location special to the couple are all great options.
WHO TO INVITE All immediate family (parents, grandparents, siblings and spouses), members of the wedding party (and their plus ones), and out of town guests; other wedding guests may be invited if the budget allows.
LEVEL OF FORMALITY This is entirely dependent upon the couples’ desires and wedding style and the hosts’ budget. Anything from an informal backyard crawfish boil to the most formal 5 course seated dinner at a restaurant may be chosen.

their story TAYLAR MAJOR IS A METICULOUS PLANNER and the 2017 Christmas party was especially important to her: It would be the first event she and her long-time boyfriend, Vincent Hirstius, would be hosting in their new Lakeview home. Taylar spent four months tending to details, determined to get everything – the invitations, the food, the décor – just right. On the night of the party, she’d just begun her prepared speech thanking guests for attending when something she hadn’t planned happened: Vincent reached into his jacket pocket and moved to stand in front of her. He dropped to one knee, held up a ring box and looked at her expectantly. A video of the moment shows Taylar, mouth open, slowly looking turning her head to look at the guests surrounding them. Then she whispers to her silent, but smiling, future fiancé, “You have to ask me.” “I was so shocked,” Taylar says. “The moment was magical and surprising in the best way. I had planned my own engagement party!” Their love story had begun almost a decade earlier when mutual friends introduced Taylar, then a junior at the New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts, to Vincent, a Brother Martin High School senior. Both were shy and introverted. Still, within weeks the pair’s relationship turned romantic. “Little did I know then he would be my husband 10 years later,” Taylar says. “When you’re a teenager, you don’t think you’re going to meet the person you’re going to spend the rest of your life with.” The big date was set: December 22, 2018, exactly one year after Vincent’s surprise proposal. With the New Orleans Tricentennial being celebrated the same year, “it was important to have all of my events at well-known locations,” Taylar notes. The bridesmaids’ lunch was at Broussard’s; the rehearsal dinner on the second floor of Ralph’s On The Park. The couple exchanged vows in front of 200 guests in St. Mary’s Church at the Old Ursuline Convent. The party continued at Il Mercato, a Spanish colonial-style building accented with gas lamps, reclaimed brick and herringbone floors that felt “like we were going back in time, but it was also modern,” Taylar says. The venue was decorated in “French elegance” style, with neutral and pastel colors and the couple’s personalized crest – an intertwined “M” and “H”- on display. Guests took home pralines made by a family friend. “The reception was magical,” Taylar says. “We had a Second Line band come and play for 45 minutes. It was a ‘You had to be there’ moment.”

2019 is a milestone year for legacy music festivals with the 50-year celebration of both Jazz Fest and Woodstock. The summer of ‘69 marked the birth of festival culture that has since unified generations of music-goers through it’s bohemian spirit and whimsical nature—a tradition that continues today at modern festivals like Coachella and New Orleans’ own Voodoo Fest, Essence Fest and Buku Music & Arts Project.

Wedding in a Music Venue For many couples, festivals and concerts have played a significant role in their relationships, making epic entertainment an important item when it comes to planning their big day. If you’re the couple that always opts for the 3-day pass, never misses the chance to be front row for a show, or travels the country following your favorite acts, having your wedding in a music venue might be the perfect choice to celebrate your love of music and each other. One such music venue, Republic NOLA, is steadily gaining notoriety for more than epic shows & festival after-parties that have spanned their diverse 13+ year history (legends like Mumford & Sons, The Chainsmokers, G-Eazy, George Clinton & The Parliament Funkadelic, Lil Wayne, & Diplo have headlined their stage, just to name a few). Since a change in ownership and major renovation in the fall of 2015, the venue has focused on hosting more weddings and private events than ever before, while also launching an expansive menu of in-house design and coordination services to streamline the planning process. They were recently honored at the 2019 Crescent City Excellence Awards for “Best Wedding Event” and “Best Event Design” and continue to push the envelope to bring every couple’s vision to life in bigger and better ways than they could ever imagine. Gypsy Jeaux Espresseaux, housed in a repurposed 1960 International Metro Van, makes for an on-theme photo opp outside the front facade while also providing party goers with the caffeinated pick-me-up they’ll need to stay on the dance floor all night!

All About The Vibe The expansive 7500 sq.ft. warehouse that houses Republic NOLA boasts plenty of built-in features when it comes to the bars, stage, & furnishings that establish the unique vibe of the venue. The use of real candles is not only permitted, but encouraged to augment the ambiance along with filament-bulb string lights. The impressive lighting and sound throughout the space effortlessly evokes a high-energy atmosphere. The venue primarily works with PigÊon Catering on creative culinary menus, while bar services are handled by Republic’s talented team and typically include a clever specialty drink for each member of the happy couple that reflects their personality & taste.

The exposed wood beams & brick of the historic raw space is stunning as-is, so Special Event Director, Jessica Talazac, encourages couples to focus on a few key areas when it comes to décor:
1. Entrance Table As the first impression, the entrance should be a wow-factor; in this case, a vintage Henry Miller upright piano serves as the guest-book table and sets the tone for the music theme.
2. Cake Area To highlight the 26 hanging chandeliers, Republic has a suspended cake table as one of their many in-house enhancement offerings. Their hedge wall backdrop makes the gold & ivory ombré cake by Bittersweet Confections stand out against the bright, bold pops of color of the uplighting, floral topper and iridescent linen.

3. Entrance Table A head table is a great way to focus your dĂŠcor budget, and the farm tables and antique x-back chairs from Yur Event Rentals blend seamlessly with the wood accents of Republic NOLA while providing a neutral slate for colorful centerpieces, like the boho-inspired arrangements by Herbivore Floral Design.

4. Photo Opp Whether you opt for a photo booth or not, no event is complete these days without an Instagram-worthy photo moment for your guests. The Fun Factor Inspired by boho festival vibes from 1969-today, Republic’s Director of Special Events, Jessica Talazac, designed this shoot to highlight the duality of the historic space. “Everything about Republic is based in a balanced dichotomy of juxtaposing ideas; vintage character with modern amenities, industrial style with opulent accents, and a concert venue that can be completely transformed to an elegant wedding venue in ways most people would never imagine,” says Talazac. “Above all else, we believe in customization for our clients, but a close second is making sure that FUN is had by all!” The venue achieves the fun factor with a sound system that will knock your socks off, built-in LED wall for custom visuals, tons of moving lights, and curated vendor stations. To enhance this ‘festive’ theme, Elektra Cosmetic’s Glitter Buffet allows guests to add a little sparkle with their locallymade body glitter products

N.O.W WEDDING PLANNING
BE FLEXIBLE.
10 Steps to a Smooth
WEDDING DAY WRITTEN BY: Holly Lafferty
1
DON’T BE AFRAID TO DELEGATE.
Pass duties on to family and friends – that’s what they’re there for! You don’t have to be a bridezilla to ask for a favor now and then. Ask your mom to help you address invitations and ask your bridesmaids to help decorate the church. Your fiancé(e) can handle some of the details too…ask them to plan the honeymoon or book the DJ for your reception. You may have to give up some control, but in the end, you’ll be glad you did.
2
USE YOUR VENDORS.
More than anyone else, your vendors have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to weddings. Ask them for any advice they are willing to give – budget concerns, figuring out the timeline, etc. Their expertise will help your wedding go off without a hitch!
3
BE ORGANIZED.
Come up with a plan and keep it all together in a wedding book or folder. The best way to prevent disaster is to plan for it. It’s not a guarantee, but if you don’t procrastinate, the odds that your wedding day will be a calm one increases.
68 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
4
BE HEALTHY.
Take care of yourself. Planning a wedding is stressful, but if you’re not sleeping or eating properly, it’s only going to make things worse. Eat healthy, work out regularly, and maintain a consistent sleep schedule. While it takes a time commitment, you’ll feel better in the long run.
It’s important to be open to change. If you find out that the beautiful reception hall you dreamed of won’t hold all the guests at your wedding, don’t let it dash all of your wedding dreams. You may not be able to afford that big bash in Jamaica, but you can still have a wonderful day if you learn to go with the flow.
8
TAKE A DAY OFF.
Take some time to pamper yourself; it will help renew your energy. Turn off your phone, grab your maid of honor, and go to a spa. It doesn’t even matter how much money you spend… take a bubble bath at home and give yourself a pedicure. The important thing is taking some time out to recharge your batteries. Planning a wedding is hard work – you need a little break now and then!
5

REMEMBER THE BIG PICTURE.
Of course, your wedding day is important. The most important thing, however, is the marriage. Focus on the future and don’t put all of your eggs in the proverbial “wedding day basket.” At the end of the day, you will have made a commitment to someone to spend the rest of your life with them, for better or for worse.
STAY FOCUSED.
It’s commonly agreed that multitasking doesn’t work. If you overload yourself, you’re only going to increase your stress and make yourself miserable. Writing out a to-do list will help you keep things moving along smoothly. Focus on one task at a time, and don’t worry about anything else until that one task is taken care of.
HAVE REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS.
It would be nice if everything went perfectly, but that’s not likely to happen. When the flower girl throws a tantrum in the middle of the ceremony or the DJ plays the chicken dance after you explicitly told him not to, don’t get upset. If you don’t set your expectations sky-high, you may even find you’ll be able to laugh it off!
BOND WITH YOUR HONEY-TO-BE.
Preparing for the wedding isn’t nearly as important as preparing for the marriage. Take some time to go on dates with your fiancé(e) and make sure you get pre-marital counseling. Spending time together will remind you why you’re going through all of this in the first place, and it will definitely make that walk down the aisle a happy one.

A
growing concern that has become a common question from my clients in the last few years is how they can be more conscientious with their wedding. Sometimes that means they want to be more environmentally friendly, want to incorporate vegan or gluten-free foods into their menu or make sure they are giving back in some way. Even if you aren’t sold on doing a fully vegan, eco-friendly wedding, there are still ways you can lessen your environmental impact or give back while still hosting the amazing, luxe wedding of your dreams. We showcased a wide variety of ways to be conscientious in this Eco-Luxe editorial, however, there are many other easy things that anyone can do to implement small changes to their own wedding.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK As you begin your planning process, don’t feel shy about asking vendors if they are green. This might include using only local produce, tree free paper in your invitations, cleaning with environmentally friendly products, growing their own flowers, etc.
FRIENDLY FLORALS Asking your florist to use traditional arrangement techniques instead of Oasis floral foam is also a phenomenal way to make a change that is beneficial to everyone involved. Oasis foam contains known carcinogens that are dangerous to breathe in plus are not biodegradable.
RECYCLE You can also commit to waste reduction at your wedding by asking that anything that can be recycled is recycled; food scraps can be composted and left over food or flowers donated to a local shelter or nursing home.
REUSE Delicate and delicious, these macarons created by Grey Bird Baking Company owner Taylor Moore are not only delightful treats for your guests, they also serve double-duty as escort “cards”. Grey Bird offers macarons in an array of vegan flavors, including our favorite, Pistachio. Calligraphy in edible ink by Jennifer Vencill, Eglantine Rose Letterpress.
ABOUT ALCHEMY EVENTS: Alchemy Events owner Rena Sweeney has been creating exceptional experiences in New Orleans and around the world for two decades. Rena carries her passion for eco-conscious, ethical living into designing events and is the go-to event designer for couples wanting to make a big impact without making an impact on the environment.
72 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
Renting items such as china, natural linens, flatware & glassware are also fantastic for waste reduction as the items are being reused. In New Orleans it is sometimes not possible to use china or glassware, especially in some of our historic buildings and courtyards, and in those cases, there are many eco-conscious items such as bamboo plates to use in place of breakable products. Ask your caterer about these options.
BE DELIGHTFUL Another opportunity to think green includes candle decor. Obviously many of our historic facilities do not allow open flames, including candles, so in those cases, battery operated ones will be your only choice. However, if possible, try to use unscented candles made from soy, coconut wax or hemp oil instead of paraffin which is made from fossil fuels (a non-renewable resource). If open flames are allowed, you can also ask your caterer to make sure they are using an eco-friendly chaffing dish fuel such as Sterno Green Heat or Greenscapes BioFuel.
GIVE BACK Finally, as couples are often combining households, there has also been a rise in “charity registries” where your guests can donate to a charity instead of purchasing home goods which many couples already have an abundance of. Couples may also choose to donate to their favorite charity in lieu of traditional favors. Guests won’t miss receiving a favor & will love the sentiment of having helped others in need instead. One of my personal favorite charities is the Humane Society of Louisiana who we spotlighted in the Eco-Luxe editorial! If you are fully on board with this concept and want to explore further options, make sure to follow our blog series: The Ultimate Guide to Eco-Friendly, Ethical Weddings at www.alchemyeventsnola.com and sign up for our mailing list for updates as we continue to bring you more information on this topic.
“Letterpress...is very eco-friendly,” shares Eglantine Rose Letterpress owner Jennifer Vencill. “It’s printed on antique cast iron presses: each piece is placed into the press one at a time, by an artisan printer. Because the volume is small, and the level of care is very high, it doesn’t have a lot of waste of materials or resources. I use about a teaspoon of ink for an invitation suite, and clean up with soy based solvents. My presses are treadle-powered, so they use no electricity. I also love that the presses were manufactured in the 1890s and are still going strong. They are environmentally-friendly by virtue of having been built to last forever.” “Handmade paper is also great for eco-conscious brides. It’s made by small studios, one sheet at a time, from cotton scraps which are offcuts from the garment industry. It’s tree-free, and is made using what would otherwise be waste. And cotton papers can be recycled right along with wood pulp papers. The ribbon we used was cotton muslin, torn into strips. For the pink color, I hand-dyed it with watercolor. Muslin is frequently used in fitting clothing patterns, so if a bride is having a dress made from scratch, the seamstress might have scraps of muslin left over.”
Vintage handkerchiefs for tears of joy or a spontaneous Second Line can be sourced from family or at thrift stores and are a beautiful option for eco-conscious couples.

their story KELLY HAMBLIN AND MICHAEL BENEDICT met while living in Washington, D.C., but they didn’t truly connect until a few years later when they both took international development jobs in East Africa, she in Rwanda, he in Uganda. “We had both just moved away from all of our friends and family and the only people we knew online at the same time in the same time zone was each other,” says Michael, who with Kelly, now lives in Seattle. “We weren’t as far away as that sounds, maybe four or five hours apart.” She visited him. He visited her. He took work in Kenya. She transferred to Tanzania. But love knows no borders. In 2017, the couple were spending December holidays in South Africa, where Michael lived. They decided to celebrate New Year’s Eve at Reverie Social Table, a Cape Town restaurant owned by close friend Julia Hattingh. The chef was introducing the upcoming courses and sparkling wine pairings when, as planned, Michael cut in, standing and saying, “Excuse me, everybody. May I have your attention please?” He went down on one knee and offered Kelly a ring with a Tanzanite stone, the blue-violet gem found only in Tanzania, set in platinum shaped like a protea, South Africa’s national flower. An airplane was etched inside the band. Kelly said yes to Michael’s proposal. She wasn’t the only one. “A guy in the other corner had already had some wine and he also accepted,” Michael says. They chose to marry in New Orleans, a city Kelly knew well from growing up in Lafourche Parish. The event would coincide with Jazz Fest. “We wanted to attract friends who lived abroad to a city they might not have visited otherwise,” Kelly says. “Jazz Fest would highlight the amazing food and music the city has to offer.” About 70 guests from around the world came together in May 2019 for festivities that included a crawfish boil managed by Kelly’s childhood friends and live music on Frenchmen Street. The couple exchanged vows on May 4, the second Jazz Fest Saturday, at City Park’s Popp Bandstand. After toasting with Champagne and enjoying beignets from Café du Monde, the party moved to the Fair Grounds. Everyone scattered during the festival but at the end of the day, somehow, without any planning, the couple and many of their guests were together at the Gentilly Stage as Diana Ross began the day’s final set. The day, which had started with heavy rains and been mostly cloudy, was now clear. Under a warm sun, with Ross singing “Endless Love,” Kelly and Michael had their first dance as a married couple. “It was a great way to end the day,” Kelly says.

N.O.W WEDDING PLANNING
BEAUTIFUL
BALANCED BRIDE WRITTEN BY: Tiffany Kavanaugh
EVERY BRIDE WANTS TO BE BEAUTIFUL ON HER WEDDING DAY. Brides that aren’t beautiful are extremely rare (and I have never personally seen one), but there is one sure beauty-buster that can loom during every bride-to-be’s engagement period. It can jilt joy, manifest moodiness, foster forgetfulness, harbor headaches, induce insomnia, exhaust excitement, annex appetites, aggravate attitudes, and nearly ruin relationships. Its name is STRESS. Every bride feels it at some point, and when it comes in small doses it usually serves as a healthy catalyst. However, if and when it starts to get severe, people may start to mutter the word Bridezilla under their breath. Nobody wants to be a Bridezilla, but just in case you are feeling frazzled, frizzled, fretful, or fearful that you are a Bridezilla in the making (or worse yet, someone has handed you this article), read on about the different kinds of stressed-out brides. Follow the tips for “Beautiful Bride Behavior” (Guidelines for What to Do) and “Beautiful Bride Brainstorms” (Guidelines for How to Think). By the time you reach your wedding day, you will be nothing less than a Beautiful AND Balanced Bride – both inside and out!
BANKRUPT BRIDE
Described as planning a wedding out of your means. The credit score slips and payment plans stack up while the tears of worry are falling down.
Beautiful Bride Behavior – Create and stick to a budget. Can you live without chair covers and live butterflies? The answer is yes. At the end of the day, you will be married no matter how much or how little you spend. Figure out where it makes the most sense to spend your cents. Beautiful Bride Brainstorm – Understand that weddings don’t have to be expensive to be beautiful. Smiles are free and beautiful, but drowning in mega-debt is not.
BARBIE BRIDE
Described as wanting perfection at all costs. Sometimes this desire for perfection can lead to procrastination because nothing seems good enough
to even get you started. This stress also comes from the idea that the purpose of your wedding is to impress your guests. Beautiful Bride Behavior – Evaluate and prioritize which details are the most important to you, then focus on those. Give details with the lowest priority the least attention. Make a decision on these and then shift your focus back to your favorite, high-priority details. For instance, put your energy into the “old and new” and refuse to dwell on the “borrowed and blue”. Beautiful Bride Brainstorm – Learn to let go of idealistic thinking. Take the word perfect out of your vocabulary and substitute it with words like special, meaningful, memorable, beautiful, or even practical. See how becoming more open-minded creates a lot less stress. Remember that if Barbie were a real person, she would be terribly disproportioned and a candidate for breast reduction.
BLUE BRIDE
Described as the bride who may get the blahs, which tend to be triggered by high stress, anxiety, and lonel iness. If you start to consider adding your wedding coordinator to your wedding party, you are spending way too much time with this person, and it may be at the expense of other, more lasting relationships. Beautiful Bride Behavior – Stay connected to your support system. Just talking over your stress can help alleviate it. Also, make it a point to remember that there may be other noteworthy occasions in the lives of your fiancé, friends, and family. Talk to them about their lives, not just your wedding. Beautiful Bride Brainstorm – Remember that stress and emotions are temporary. Concentrate on the celebration of your loving commitment. Excite yourself with the eternity of your everlasting love. Focus on your faith lasting forever.
BOSSY BRIDE (a.k.a. Control Freak)
Described as micromanaging everyone from the caterer to the clergy. Convinced that groomsmen will surely forget their tuxes, their manners, and what time pictures start unless they receive multiple theNOWBride.com | N.O.W | 95
e-mails, text messages, and memos. Beautiful Bride Behavior – It is a good idea to let people know your expectations ahead of time. Maintain your sense of humor as you realize that sometimes the unplanned and impromptu moments become your most treasured memories. Allow people to do the jobs that you previously (back when you were sane) determined they were capable of. Beautiful Bride Brainstorm – Pray the Serenity Prayer. Repeat as often as needed. Also, ask yourself, “Will this matter five years from now?” Chances are it won’t. Even your wedding photos eventually find their way to storage that rarely sees daylight.
BURNED-OUT BRIDE
Described as “desperate to get this over with”. Whether you have had years of planning or perhaps years of abstinence, you are ready to reach the culmination and/or the consummation. Beautiful Bride Behavior – Take your
96 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com
mind off of the wedding. Purposefully go do something else. Grant yourself and your fiancé permission to take a break. Having a balance of activities is a good way to prevent moodiness that may be associated with intolerance and impatience. Beautiful Bride Brainstorm – Remind yourself to keep your eye on the prize. Patience is a character builder. Remember that whatever doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.
BUSY BRIDE
Described as a bride whose schedule causes head-spinning and tail-chasing. This bride is so confused she is rapidly losing track of her deadlines, hemlines, to-do’s, I-do’s, party favors, cake flavors, bridal showers, and selection of flowers. Beautiful Bride Behavior – Slow down by getting off of the pre-marital merrygo-round. It’s okay to not let the wedding plans become the consuming activity in your life. Be deliberate about getting
plenty of rest (8 hours), exercise (3-4 times per week), and proper nutrition. Trade your wedding planner and caffeine for some cardio, a bottle of water, and some Zzzzzz’s. Beautiful Bride Brainstorm – Remember that it’s okay to set limits and boundaries with yourself and others. Ask for help. Avoid excessive people pleasing. Assert your right to say no. Busy brides need to find a way to “stop and smell the bouquet”. If you are a bride who does not see yourself as a Busy, Bossy, Burned-out, Blue, Bankrupt Barbie, congratulations! You have managed to avoid any hints of becoming a Bridezilla. If you do see yourself in any of these or other stressful situations, the main thing to do is to maintain perspective. Your wedding is undoubtedly one of the most important days of your life, but in the big picture, it is just one day. When you look back, it will seem like the blink of an eye. Blessed be the Beautiful, Balanced Bride!

Well Groomed THE TASK OF SELECTING the groom’s attire is his decision. Whether purchased or rented, his attire should complement the time and feel of your wedding as well as your gown and bridal party’s attire!
FORMAL WEAR Choosing a tux might just be the easiest wedding-related decision you’ll make. After all, it’s hard to go wrong with a suit that has changed so modestly in the past 120 years. In fact, if you compare today’s tuxedo with the one your father wore at his wedding, you’ll likely see only slight variations (provided dad didn’t wear a ruffled shirt). The single-breasted notch lapel tuxedo, is a classic look that never goes out of style. Searching for your own take on the traditional tux? From ties and vests to buttons and shoes, here’s the straight talk on your options, along with styles that best suit your groom’s silhouette.

When it comes to ties there’s standard, and then there’s spectacular. While the classic bow tie will always be a perennial favorite, there are other options for grooms who choose to venture outside the norm. One of the most popular styles, the fourin-hand, is similar to a standard business tie. Paired with a matching full-backed vest in a subtle pattern, a four-in-hand is the top choice.
Jacket required The key to a flattering tuxedo often lies in the jacket. The right one can whittle the waist, lengthen the torso, or add the appearance of broader shoulders. The most common jacket is single breasted with a shawl lapel. This look is perfect for both short and tall men with more of a stocky or husky appearance. The same jacket with a notched lapel would flatter a short, thin groom because the notch in the lapel gives the
appearance of broader shoulders. A double-breasted jacket is great for thinner men because the eyes are drawn to the two rows of buttons at the midsection and gives the illusion of girth. With a double-breasted jacket, the shoulders can also be padded a bit to give the wearer the appearance of broader shoulders while still retaining the look of his trim waistline.
Somewhere between black & white The color of your groom’s tuxedo is up to the two of you. Take into account the formality of your celebration, along with the time of day. If you’re planning an afternoon ceremony, a gray tuxedo with a stroller jacket is the standard look. A more casual celebration closer to evening might call for a white dinner jacket with black trousers and tie. A formal evening affair warrants the classic black tuxedo. Keep in mind, however, that traditions are just that and the two of you should choose the style and color that you want, no matter the time of day or the formality of the occasion.
Finish the look Finally, complete the formal look with matching socks and shoes. The guys’ socks should either be the same color as their shoes, or show some personality and match the colors in your wedding, which make for some great photo ops. Nowadays men are choosing less formal shoes and also showing personality with matching “Chucks” or “Toms.” But if needed, formal shoes can be rented from your formalwear company. Styles vary from slip-on versions with a parade shine to mock wingtips in classic black.

their story AFTER THE WEDDING CEREMONY IN THE library of the Ritz-Carlton; the reception in the hotel penthouse complete with four ballerinas; the second line led by a brass band and the Zulu Tramps and Indians; the amazing food prepared by Chef Edgar “Dooky” Chase IV; and the fireworks show, newlyweds Charles Alexander and Travis Watson had the same words run through their minds, “Who would have ever thought?” “It’s something we always say,” says Charles, who grew up in New Orleans. “What was supposed to be a night of fun turned into eight years and a wedding.” The couple had met in a Biloxi casino in 2011. Travis was playing the slots. Charles noticed the handsome man and went over to make conversation, opening with the line, “Are you winning?” Thus began their long distance relationship, with Charles in Louisiana and Travis in Florida. Over the next 18 months, they saw each other for at least two weekends every month, traveling between their homes and visiting new places together. Then Charles, a pharmaceutical representative, found work in Florida and the pair moved into an apartment in Miramar Beach, the same city where they now live. At some point in their fifth or sixth year of dating, Charles casually asked Travis to marry him while driving back to Florida after a stay in New Orleans. “He said, ‘I need a real proposal,’” Charles recalls, laughing. “’ If you’re going to ask me, don’t ask me when we’re driving across the toll bridge.’” He did and the wedding planning began. Charles wanted to have both ceremony and reception at the Ritz-Carlton on Canal Street. “That was one of my fairy tale dreams,” he says. “You’re in a hotel, but you’re not. It feels like home.” On May 11, in the hotel’s elegant woodpaneled library, each man and his mother walked through 100 guests seated on leather chairs and couches to stand before Rev. Philip Brockett of the Central St. Matthew United Church of Christ. The couple exchanged self-written vows. Travis promised to let Charles win an occasional fight. Charles told Trevor he was eternally grateful for his steadfast support. “I’m the crazy one, the more social one,” Charles says. “Trevor has never asked me to change. That means a lot to me.” From there, they moved to the Stewart Junneau residence on the hotel’s 15th - and top – floor. There, the terrace provided a view of the city from the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain, from the French Quarter to the Crescent City Connection. Their relationship had begun in 2011 when Charles asked Trevor if he was winning in a Biloxi casino. Eight years later, surrounded by loving friends and family and forever bound, both men felt like they’d won the jackpot.

WELL PLANNED Consultants aren’t just for the rich and famous. Their services run the gamut from day of planning help to full on coordination packages. There’s a plan of action for every bride and every wedding. Here are 5 reasons to hire a planner 1. REFERRALS. Working with a consultant means you get hooked up with the best people and the best plans. 2. EXPERIENCE. Your planner’s experience coordinating previous events will benefit you in a big way. 3. Efficiency. Most weddings take at least 200 hours to plan. Why waste time trying to figure out what to do when a planner can help you get your game plan on track? 4. READY FOR ANYTHING. Tissues? Check. Backup plan? Check. Your coordinator thinks of everything and that’s a major plus when you’re stressed out, confused or just plain scared of what to do next in the planning process.

YOU’RE PLANNING YOUR wedding at a “blank canvas” site, you’ll definitely need to make use of rental services. Even if you hold your event at an all-inclusive venue, you may find that you want to personalize the space with specialty linen or furniture. Décor rental companies have so much to offer from practical items like tables and chairs to fanciful thrones, ambiance creating lighting and special effects and more!
Getting Started
Rental and Décor
Before you try and select a party rental company, you’ll want to sit down with your wedding coordinator or the event planners for your ceremony and reception sites to determine exactly what you’ll need. Venues often offer linens and tableware, so you’ll want to be certain of what you’ll be receiving from your wedding venues. Once you determine what you already have, you’ll then know what you’ll still need to make your celebration complete. No matter how big or small, it’s likely a party rental company can help you find it. From lounge furniture, roulette tables, mirrored disco balls, portable restrooms, and photo booths, party rental companys can find just about anything – all you have to do is ask.

After determining what type of items you’re looking for, it’s time to shop. To find a reputable party rental company, consult with your wedding coordinator, the event planners for your ceremony and reception sites for recommendations. Once you’ve narrowed your selections to a few rental companies, make appointments so you can check out each company’s inventory.
1. May we see pictures from past weddings you’ve done? 2. Have you worked at our location before? 3. What are your delivery/setup/ breakdown fees? 4. What type of lighting options are available? 5 . How can you help us create the ambiance we are envisioning? 6. What rental items do you suggest to help us create our vision while staying within budget? 7. their story TREVOR YOUNG HAD IT ALL PLANNED OUT. First, dinner with his beloved, Allison Remson, and her parents at a favorite restaurant in downtown Baton Rouge. Then a walk to the Mississippi River levee where, as fireworks burst in the air above, Trevor would ask the big question. Most of that didn’t happen. “I ruined my husband’s perfect proposal,” Allison admits. “After a long day at work, I asked for a rain check … Clearly, I had no idea what I was missing out on.” But Trevor persisted. As they headed to bed after a quiet night at home, Trevor asked if they had any Rosé or Champagne. Even though Allison knew they did not, Trevor rolled out of bed, left the room, then quickly returned and, in the dark, walked to Allison’s side of the bed. “I leaned over to turn on my bedside lamp and there he was, down on knee, in the bedroom of our first house,” Allison says. “It may not have been what he had planned, but to me, it was perfect.” They’d met at the House of Blues in New Orleans in 2011. Allison, in college in Lafayette, was there to see the reggae band SOJA. Trevor was one of the band’s guitar technicians. “I assumed he worked for the House for Blues, not the band,” Allison says. “I thought to myself, ‘This guy is just far enough away to not have to make a commitment to a relationship.’” But “this guy” wanted a relationship and the pair began dating. When it was time to plan their wedding, they chose Houmas House Plantation as the setting. On March 23, 2019 guests watched as the couple stood together under a canopy of live oaks and prepared for happily ever after. A close friend who had been there on the night they’d first met served as officiant. No one else stood nearby, Allison says, “which allowed us to completely focus on one another and the vows we were making for the rest of our lives.” “The ceremony itself was my favorite part of the day,” Allison says. “It was right at sunset and the light was flooding through the trees, putting a spotlight on our love.” A traditional reception at the Houmas House Pavilion followed. And then another party followed that. All of the Houmas House cabins had been rented out by the couple’s family and friends, so Allison and Trevor hired a DJ and set up a bar in the cabins’ central courtyard. “The wedding party didn’t officially end until five in the morning,” Allison says.

This may seem easy, but there’s often more to consider about a photographer than his or her website. You need to work with a professional photographer who shoots in a style that suits you. If you’re a really unstructured couple, you may love a fly-on-the-wall approach to shooting a wedding; but for a more traditional look, you’ll want a photographer who shoots a mix of portraits and candids so you can fill your album with posed pictures and still have the benefit of getting some fun candids. The best way to gauge a photographer’s style? Ask to check out an entire wedding the photographer recently shot. Look for photos that convey an overall sense of the day in a style that you love.
Do a Dress Rehearsal. Get to know your photographer by shooting some engagement photos. You’ll get some great shots and you’ll get a sense of how your photographer works. You can also run through your wedding photos ahead of time. Many couples dress up in their wedding attire before the big day to shoot photos in a relaxed setting without time restrictions.
ask potential photographers these questions 1. May we see your references, portfolio and past wedding samples? 2. Will you be the one photographing/ filming my wedding? 3. What style do you specialize in (candid, portraits, etc.)? 4. Have you ever worked in our wedding venue before? 5. Will someone assist you on the wedding day? 6. Are you familiar with the lighting and layout at our venue(s)? 7. What are your packages and what do they include (number and size of photos, albums, additional costs)? 8. For videographer, what is the price for additional copies? Do we need to provide a song list to be played along with the video? 9. Do you offer overtime? What is the rate? 10. Can we purchase the negatives/ digital files/raw footage? If not, how long do you keep them on file? 11. What are your payment terms? Are there any additional charges we should know about? 12. What is your cancellation policy?
A Guide to Group Photos
WEDDINGS ARE THE PERFECT CHANCE TO SCORE SOME GREAT FAMILY PHOTOS – SERIOUSLY, HOW OFTEN DOES YOUR whole family get together while they’re all dressed up AND a professional photographer is on hand? Since weddings can be very fast paced here in The Big Easy, we’ve put together some suggestions to make this process run smoothly.
n Create a list of photos you want to take, who needs to be in them and the time frame they’ll be done (Before or after the ceremony? During the reception?). n Be sure to tell anyone you’d like to be in formal photos well in advance about when and where they’ll need to be for pictures. n Consider appointing a “photo coordinator” who knows who everyone is (you know Aunt Sally would just love this job!). Have them be responsible for reminding everyone of the schedule the day before and be on hand to make sure no one is missing when the photographer snaps the picture. n Keep in mind that a good photographer will need an average of 3 minutes to pose and photograph each grouping. This means 10 groups could take 30 minutes or more to photograph. Be sure to allot enough time for the number of photos you want to take or pare down the list to fit the time you have available. n Try to schedule your photos as early as possible before everyone starts partying. It can take much longer to collect a large group once they’ve scattered at the wedding reception.
