How to Find Your PhotographyStyle :: From the Creative Director’s Desk ::

PHOTOGRAPHY SHOULD BE AT THE TOP OF YOUR PRIORITY LIST. STOP AND READ THAT AGAIN. DID IT SINK IN? DO you believe it in your soul? Ten years from now you probably won’t remember that your feet hurt from those fab shoes and you may not even remember everyone who attended (I’m looking at you co-worker from 3 jobs ago), but you WILL remember how you felt that day and you’ll want to look back at your photos with joy. This is why finding a photographer who is the right fit for you is so important! And don’t worry, I’m going to share how you go about doing that.

SHOOTING STYLES:

Most couples come to me thinking hiring a photographer is all about who is within their budget, but that’s not the case. The first step is actually figuring out what your style is and what kind of photographer you want to work with, then narrowing down which vendors fit those parameters and then which of those is within your budget.

Editorial - This photographer focuses on creating stunning, Pinterest-worthy works of art. They take time to consider each of the elements being incorporated and their photos often have an editorial feel to them. This photographer will likely pose, or orchestrate down to the fine details, the majority of their images. There will likely be action images, but you can realistically expect to be posing quite a bit.

If you’re not one of my clients with exclusive access to my Alchemy Events planning app where I cover this, I always recommend starting by looking at many different types of photographers - even if you think you already know your style. Keep in mind this is artwork that will hang in your home for the rest of your lives and should mesh with your own personal style. Also consider the time of day and setting of your wedding, although any photographer should be able to shoot well in any lighting situation (this is an important thing to look for too, by the way!).

The ”New” Traditional - No, this isn’t your mom’s wedding photographer. This style is really a mix of the other two styles, allowing events to unfold naturally throughout the day and capturing them, but also allowing the photographer to create some ideal situations for capturing beautiful photos as well, such as those beautiful flat lays we know you’ve been pinning online and posed portraits.

Here I’m going to review different styles that I often see, so hold on while we take a crash course! 10 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com

Photojournalistic/Documentary - This style is all about telling the story. Similar to being a news reporter, photojournalists capture what is happening without a lot of interference or posing of shots. This shows the true moments of your wedding day as it unfolds naturally.

Not every photographer falls exactly in line with one of these styles, and they can overlap a bit depending on the individual, which can also be true for editing styles, which I’ll cover next.

EDITING STYLES: Dramatic - These images lend themselves to a more emotional vibe, using deep shadows, higher contrasts and richer colors. Light and Airy - These photos are more romantic, soft and whimsical, with lighter tones and muted colors. True Color - These images are shot and edited in a way that captures a photo more true to what you saw on your wedding day with your naked eye. You may have some that are bright and some that are dark, but overall, it will be more middle ground than either extreme. Of course, some photographers who edit this way also like bright punches of color, so even this style can vary a bit from photographer to photographer.

TRADITIONAL STYLE POSING

Even if you’re drawn to dramatic or light and airy styles, you’ll want to make sure that images aren’t so bright that you lose all the details of your wedding dress, or so dark that you don’t capture the details of a tux with really cool accessories. A good photographer can give you that look while not sacrificing those details. POSING STYLES: Traditional - This is what most people think of when you mention posed photos. There is usually studio lighting setup for the best possible outcome, everyone is given direction and placed in a specific position, and then you smile for the camera.

CASUAL STYLE POSING

Casual - Casual posing might still have you lined up with your attendants, however, in a less time consuming and less formal way. The photographer may just tell you to gather together, to chat and look at each other, to walk toward the camera or just relax and position your body as it feels natural. Fashion Editorial - This style often takes its cues from fashion magazines. Attendants and family members may be placed in creative poses and look more serious or may be lounging on furniture for a very glam look. No matter which style of posing you are most drawn toward, opt for a mix of a few styles just to be safe. What you love today might make you cringe 10 years from now, or you may want a very specific photo with loved ones that feels more intimate than an editorial look. I also always recommend giving the photographer the final call on this. As they are looking through the camera, they can see if something is or isn’t working and adjust accordingly to give you the best possible photos of your wedding day. Now, here’s some practical advice: do not just go by a photographer’s social media feed or even their website. Ask to see a full gallery of images from a recent wedding they shot (or one that might be similar to yours, such as time of day or location). Everyone, of course, cherry picks the best images of our work to feature on social media, but what you’re doing here is digging deeper. When looking at their full gallery, it should be more than 50-100 photos. If that’s all a couple is getting back (from a full day-long wedding, not a short elopement, etc.), be concerned. If they shoot a thousand images but only a small portion are ones you think are good, consider that. You want to find a balance between getting back a lot of photos and a good number of photos you love!

FASHION EDITORIAL STYLE POSING

Finally, if you don’t have a wedding planner to help guide you, ask your other vendors for recommendations or feedback. While good references from other clients are great to have, they are not professionals either. Vendors often know one another, work together frequently and have an insider’s look at things. So a vendor recommendation is a valuable asset! Once you have gone through several options and narrowed down your choices, go with your gut. Your photographer will be by your side throughout the day so make sure it’s someone you feel comfortable with. Doing engagement photos with them prior to the wedding is a great way to get to work with them and become comfortable prior to your wedding day. Once you’ve got them booked, you know you’ll be able to relax and enjoy your wedding day knowing those memories are forever preserved for you. Happy Planning!

Three models, three photographers, one fashion shoot. It can often be difficult to truly compare photographers because each wedding is as unique as the photographer themselves. For this editorial experiment, we leveled the playing field. The Parameters: Each model chose her own look for the shoot and was assigned an area in the InterContinental New Orleans for her photographs. The models were instructed not to share what poses or specific backdrops in their assigned areas with the other photographers. . Each Photographer was allowed 1 hour with each model to create a collection of images in their personal shooting style and then edited the images in their style and submitted their favorites for the editorial. Camilla Marchena (pronouns: she/her) is currently working as a linkage specialist, patient navigator, and community health educator at a non-profit health care facility in the Transgender Women’s Engagement and Entry to Care (TWEET) program helping to remove barriers to healthcare, and other services. Camilla is a proud, Latinx trans woman who felt a calling to serve her community so others would feel supported on their journeys. She is also a part of the Trans Advisory Committee which trains personnel on cultural humility and trans competent care, as well as working on different advocacy efforts in the greater New Orleans area. Camilla is also a founder of House of Tulip, a new initiative that provides zero barrier housing to trans and gender-nonconforming communities in New Orleans while also fostering pathways to education, healthcare, employment, and homeownership. She is fluent in Spanish and works to connect and navigate healthcare for the LGBTQ Latinx community. She is working towards advancing her career in health care to become a provider that focuses on gender affirming care. In her free time she enjoys thrifting on Depop, cuddling her two toy poodles, and trying new food spots around the city. ABOUT CAMILLA’S LOOK: Camilla chose a crepe sheath silhouette wedding dress with frosted, embroidered appliqués. Her look is embellished with a chic, romantic cape. This gown and cape are available at Pearl’s Place. Camilla’s makeup is soft and elegant and her hair is styled in a one shoulder, vintage, Old Hollywood style wave. She chose Passport Polish’s St. Barth for her nails. Camilla was photographed in the InterContinental New Orleans’ La Salle Ballroom and Grand Staircase.

S oph ia S c o tt Sophia Scott, a New Orleans native, is an educator and model. As an educator, she is the Executive Director of Opportunities Academy, a school that serves students who are between the ages of 1822 and have significant exceptionalities. Since 2007, she’s worked in education as a teacher; and she soon realized she gained the most joy and energy from working with students who need the most intense supports. Ten years after Sophia started teaching, she decided to try modeling after two modeling opportunities were offered to her. The second opportunity, from a high school classmate, was to model for Mave Couture for the relaunch of their curvy couture line (who she continues to model for). That experience gave Sophia the push she needed to start pursuing other modeling opportunities, and that’s where Ms. Glamazon was born. Since then, Sophia has walked in numerous fashion shows, and participated in several makeup shoots and fashion photo shoots for some New Orleans designers and business owners. She also competed in the Ms. Full-Figured USA Louisiana 2019 Pageant, where she placed second runner up and was crowned Ms. Photogenic. ABOUT SOPHIA’S LOOK: Sophia chose a sparkling a-line, ivory and champagne ball gown silhouette gown with a corset back. This bridal gown features crystals, embroidery, and appliqués on a lace, tulle gown. A finger-tip length veil with crystal edging completes her ensemble. This gown and veil are available at Pearl’s Place. Her hair is styled in a soft up-do and her makeup is glamorous with a bold red lip. She chose Passport Polish’s Italy for her nails. Sophia was photographed in one of the InterContinental New Orleans’ luxury suites.

Al lie S i mo n e au x Allie Simoneaux, a Louisiana-native currently residing in Los Angeles, is a flight attendant for a major US airline. Allie has been traveling the world for many years, but nature and solitude brings her back to being grounded with her inner peace. Working in the airline industry during this pandemic has brought her thoughts to full gratitude and inner peace more than ever before. Allie is grateful for her health and career and felt with this photo shoot experience that she was able to wear that inner health proudly. Allie is a fitness and healthy eating enthusiast. ABOUT ALLIE’S LOOK: Allie chose a Tillie Chantilly, striped lace and tulle gown with a Calla motif and long lace sleeves. Instead of a veil, she opted for a Dreamcatcher headpiece accented with clear stones. This gown and headpiece are available at Pearl’s Place. To match her Boho style, Allie’s hair is styled in loose curls and her makeup was natural with a dewey look. She chose Passport Polish’s Iran for her nails. Allie was photographed in the InterContinental New Orleans’ Marigny Atrium.

Kelly Reinhardt & Kyle Leblanc NOVEMBER 21, 2020

“HEAVEN KNOWS” WRITTEN BY: Jessica Burke | PHOTOGRAPHER: Ashley Kapic

KELLY KNEW THAT KYLE WOULD BE PROPOSING AFTER A RINGshopping trip in December of 2018, but what she didn’t know was when he’d propose. That was fine with her though - she wanted to be surprised! Months went by and Kelly managed to forget about the ring shopping trip and instead got excited about a Rolling Stones concert she and Kyle had tickets for in July of 2019. “We had this trip planned since before we went ring shopping,” shares Kelly. “The concert was for July 27th.” Kelly’s dad was so excited for her to go to the concert, partly because it was one of his favorite bands, but mostly because Kyle had approached him to ask permission to marry Kelly and had told her father that he’d been planning to propose the weekend of the concert! “On July 19th my dad that I was so close to passed away suddenly,” shares Kelly. “I contemplated not going to the concert which was now just 1 week away. I had just lost one of the most important people in my life but I knew that he would have 100% wanted me to go. It was a hard decision, but we went.” The day after the concert, Kyle asked Kelly if she’d like to go to the Houston Botanic Garden before they headed home. She agreed and as they walked in Kelly noticed a giant red honeysuckle plant. “I looked at Kyle,” says Kelly “and said ‘Oh my gosh, my dad loved these plants.’ I instantly felt as though my dad was there with us.” Kyle led Kelly to a beautiful waterfall where he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. “It was the most special moment,” shares Kelly. Afterwards, Kyle told her about his conversation with her father. Kelly knew he would have wanted the proposal to happen as planned.

32 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com

On the wedding day, Kelly walked down the aisle in the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum courtyard with a photograph of her father attached to her bouquet. “I am one of those girls that had been planning her own wedding since I was like 5 so I knew exactly what I wanted and that made the process much easier,” shares Kelly. “The planning process for me was so much fun. I did plan everything on my own.” Before the ceremony, the couple did a First Look on the Omni Royal Orleans’ rooftop observation deck. It was a beautiful, emotional moment for both: “When he turned around I could feel the tears in my eyes building up,” says Kelly. “He looked so good in his tux and all I could think about was I get to marry this great man in just a few short hours.” Kyle was initially speechless before saying “Wow, you look amazing.” After the ceremony, the wedding party traveled to The Pearl Room for the reception where the bride and groom enjoyed their first dance as husband and wife and noshed on cake from Gambino’s Bakery with their guests. Kelly’s cake was traditional wedding cake flavor and Kyle’s was chocolate, featuring two blue crabs in a net - in honor of Kyle’s fond memories of crabbing with his grandfather. Kelly advises newly engaged couples to “truly enjoy the whole wedding planning process with one another. Don’t let the small things stress you out. As long as you both show up on your big day is all that matters.”

Lynsey Sylvas & Brian Winchester, Jr. OCTOBER 10, 2020

“DANCING ON CLOUD 9” WRITTEN BY: Jessica Burke | PHOTOGRAPHER: Modern Glow Photography

LYNSEY AND BRIAN WERE INTRODUCED BY FRIENDS ON FEBRUARY 6, 2016 and “never missed a day talking to each other” since. Three and a half years later, Brian planned a surprise birthday party for Lynsey. Little did she know that there was an even bigger surprise in store for her that day. Lynsey opened all her gifts and Brian saved the best for last. As she opened his gift, he got on his knees and asked if I would marry him,” shares Lynsey. “Of course, I said yes!” Lynsey loved that the ring featured a blue sapphire, the color of her birthstone. The couple chose October 10, 2020 as their wedding date and began planning. “I chose a Hollywood Theme for my wedding,” says Lynsey “and the Crystal Palace Ballroom reminded me of royalty.” “We knew my future Mother-in-Law would handle the flowers and decorations because she is the owner of Blooming Flowers and Events,” shares Lynsey. “I can’t thank her enough for all she did to make our day a success.” Lynsey saw several dresses she liked, “but the dress I tried on at The Bridal Boutique By MaeMe was the dress I knew I had to say yes [to]...the full, scallop

36 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com

lace hemline is created with horsehair to help create a true floating look.” After finding the perfect gown, it was the bridesmaids’ turn and they chose stunning lavender, off-the-shoulder gowns from Pearl’s Place. The week of the wedding, Hurricane Delta was in the Gulf. The storm forced a change of plans to the events leading up to the wedding but on the wedding day, “the weather was beautiful and the sun was shining,” shares Lynsey. “After all our trials and tribulations in 2020, I knew it was God; He answered our prayers. I was able to have my dream wedding with this perfect weather and our loved ones. My heart was full.” The first dance was magical; as the couple danced to “Love All Over Me” by Monica, special fog effects spread across the dance floor that made them look as if they were dancing on clouds. A video of the first dance went viral on social media with over 4 million views! Lynsey’s advice to newly engaged couples is “start planning early and don’t let anybody tell you what you want for YOUR day. Things may not go according to the way you planned, but stay the course and keep moving forward.”

MEET AMIN RUSSELL Amin Russell’s interest in photography began when he was 16 years old in the darkroom when he was in high school. Photography began as a hobby, but turned into a serious pursuit when he attended a wedding as a guest and the official photographer didn’t show up. “By this time I was carrying my camera with me everywhere,” he shares, “so yours truly became the wedding photographer by default.” When the couple saw his photos, they loved them and “it just blossomed from there.” Amin is now 23 years into his professional photography career and hasn’t looked back. “My style has evolved over the years,” Amin shares. “Present day, my style is cinematic, bold and dramatic. I like the use of architecture as a backdrop.” Amin’s clients are drawn to his work because of his style and most ask him to create large format artwork for their homes from their wedding photos. He equates it to going to a gallery to purchase fine art. “Those are the images I like to create,” he says. Amin’s ideal client loves the same ideas he does and has the same passion for art. “My client appreciates the architecture and the boldness, the cloudy sky versus the white sky, the color pop,” Amin shares. “It’s a more

dramatic client versus a more traditional client. I have a smaller niche rather than the masses.” Having a relationship with your photographer is important. “I tell all my brides that I’ll spend more time with them than their own husband on the wedding day,” he says. “It’s important to establish rapport and a good working relationship. I invite my clients to join my private Facebook group so we can exchange ideas and get to know one another better and able to form that relationship.” He also stresses the importance of knowing what you’re getting for the price. “There’s a lot of glamorous prices out there and the price ranges matter.” You should expect the finished product to match the price tag. “Know what you’re getting,” he advises.”The final deliverable is extremely important.” Amin spends a lot of time getting to know his clients. “I am chock full of information. You’ll get lots of emails, texts and phone calls,” he says. “There’s a lot of homework for my brides, but that homework is so I can be a better photographer for your day. We’re best friends by their wedding day.” “I thoroughly enjoy what I do,” says Amin, “and what I like just as much is to provide the products I do at the end of our working relationship. Even beyond that, my clients can always pick up the phone and call me - we have that relationship.”

MEET BRIAN JARREAU If your guests don’t know Brian Jarreau before your wedding, there’s no question they will by the end of your wedding day. This photojournalistic, “semi-formal when necessary” style photographer thrives on being a part of your wedding day, interacting with you and your guests and helping you relax and have fun. His adaptability is something he prides himself on and he makes sure that he listens to what kind of images his clients are looking for and delivers those - along with a great experience. Brian, a theater major in college, got his start working in the feature film industry, but realized soon that despite the fabulous people in the industry, it was a “soul-sucking job that wasn’t for me,” he shares. He soon left his home state of Louisiana and the film industry to explore other opportunities. Fortunately, he found his muse in photography while training under a professional lingerie and eyewear photographer. This photographer saw his potential and encouraged him to explore the medium and ultimately Brian launched his own company in 2012. “I had always liked photography,” Brian shares, “but never realized it was an avenue I could be good at or something that I had an eye for.” In addition to the creative outlet, Brian enjoys the social aspect of wedding photography. “It is an opportunity for me to run my mouth non-stop because if i’m holding the camera, people have to listen to me,” he jokes, “and I love to talk.” “Because I have a background in theater, [wedding photography] gives me the ability to make friends with strangers and interface with people; it was a no-brainer for me.”

Brian loves working with couples who are enthusiastic about the images they see in his portfolio, trust his process implicitly and allow him to “just do his thing.” Trust is a huge factor for Brian. “What I love about couples, especially in New Orleans, is they trust us and trust that we’re going to deliver a good time for them.” “One of my favorite things about wedding days is that everyone is there because they want to be there; no one wants the day to end. I live for this because I want to be there too - I want to be at your party!” he shares. “We are going to have fun and you’re going to see photos of you having fun.” Brian offers this advice for engaged couples: “It’s important to know what you want out of the photography for your wedding day. We understand you’re on a budget and we understand you have a limited amount of dollars to stretch in so many directions, but there are so many aspects of your wedding that you will never remember and then there are the images that you will have forever. If your gut is telling you to go with a photographer that you really like and it’s a difference of a couple hundred dollars, find it; find that couple hundred dollars and invest in peace of mind that you know you’re going to get the best experience out of your wedding day - whoever that photographer may be. Nothing good ever comes cheap.” Finally he advises,”Don’t stress about your wedding day and the planning because it’s all going to come together. When you hire the right vendors, you don’t have to worry,” he says. “We’re going to make sure everything is perfect.”

MEET ANTHONY LAMOTHE “I always found it important to capture life’s moments in a way of preserving that part of time that can’t be re-lived,” shares Anthony LaMothe of Capture Studio Photography. “This gives me my drive, passion and purpose to help our clients preserve those moments, which allows generations to look back and witness their family history.” Anthony got started in photography when he was in junior high, playing around with his father’s old Polaroid and film cameras. He turned his interest into a business 14 years ago. “I am self-taught,” he shares. “I’ve learned a lot from my mistakes, which I don’t make any more,” he jokes. “I’m still learning; from new techniques to constantly trying to keep up with the new equipment that’s always coming out.” Anthony’s style is a hybrid of documentary with a little editorial and artistic flair. “I really enjoy capturing moments as they unfold naturally. That’s what it’s about - the story and the details.” With this he notes how important it is to have a great connection with your photographer. “Get to know your photographer because 9 times out of 10 we want to get to know our clients too,” he shares. “It’s not just a gig for me - it’s about rapport and the connection.” This rapport helps your photographer and all your vendors know what’s important to you and to do a better job. “If your personalities don’t jive, it’s not really a good fit.”

Anthony loves working with clients who are open to creative suggestions and ideas and appreciate a nontraditional approach. His favorite clients are “easy going, family oriented, fun and outgoing, like myself,” he shares. He also appreciates working with clients who put their trust in their vendors, himself included. “We’re professionals and we’re there to make their day spectacular.” He also stresses how important it is to read and understand your contract and vet your vendors. “Ask questions if you don’t understand,” he advises. “Don’t just hire someone just because a friend recommended them. Make sure you have a rapport and genuine connection.” He also stresses to make sure that your vendors have insurance and find out how long they’ve been in business. “Reach out to them and speak personally.” When working with Anthony you can expect him to be very hands-on during the planning process, working with you to make a timeline - especially for the earlier part of the day - to make sure things run smoothly. “We pay a lot of attention to details, both in the photos and in the service we provide,” he shares. “We’re in touch throughout the entire planning process...we’re not easy to get rid of!” he jokes. “We want our clients to be an integral part of our family.”

MEET SANDRA O’CLAIRE Sandra O’Claire has been a photographer her whole life. “My first exhibit was actually when I was seven,” she says. “I was this weird child who would pull my stuffed animals outside and take photos of them all lined up - that was a start!” she laughs. By the time she was 12, she had “grandiose visions” of being a National Geographic-style photographer and attempted to embrace that vision with her mom’s 1980s disc-style camera on a trip to the zoo. When the photos didn’t turn out how she saw them in her head, she started trying to learn and took classes in photography. “I took all the highschool classes, but didn’t go into it right away because I didn’t think you could get a good job,” she shares. “I had visions of working in Sears’ Portrait Studio!” In college she ended up in the film and motion picture department and double majored in photography. She worked in commercial photography for many years and people began asking her to do weddings. The simplest answer of how she ended up a professional photographer? “It’s always been a part of me,” she says. 2021 marks 20 years in wedding photography for Sandra. “Having 20 years of experience, nothing throws me for a loop anymore,” says Sandra. “I feel like we keep up with the modern styles - we’re not outdated. I feel like I’m an absolute expert. I know the ins and outs. We really just take care of clients because we’re so experienced. I’m not guessing and I ask my clients ‘what are you looking for,’ ‘what’s most important to you,’ and I really try to individualize the coverage.” “The number one word I use to describe my style is ‘natural,’” says Sandra. “Candid, in the moment, emotion but most of the time when people reach out they say ‘Oh I love your work! It’s so natural!” so I hear that alot and I just say it’s “natural.” Sandra doesn’t over-pose her clients or try to make them look like models; “I just want them to look like the best version of themselves,” she shares. “When you’re picking a photographer, it’s important to find someone who ‘clicks’ with your personality,” Sandra advises. She also notes that it’s important to ask about working style. “There are so many photographers who pose everything,” she notes, “everything is composed and set up. You get those quality shots but they’re kind of devoid of your personality. But some people love that! Others feel very uncomfortable posing.” Sandra also advises to make sure that your videographers style meshes well too. “If you have a videographer who likes to pose and you have a candid, documentary photographer, that doesn’t mix.” She encourages couples to think about “What do you want to do? What end product do you want?” she asks. “The downside to documentary is that you may not get those perfectly posed photos. That’s why I tell clients we do a mix of both - we let things happen naturally at first and then we might go in and say ‘stand by the window and look at us.’” It’s important to make sure that everyone is on the same page and knows what to expect. Sandra’s work and shooting style tend to attract clients who just want to enjoy their day. “They want great photographs but they don’t want the whole day choreographed - the wedding isn’t a photo shoot. I wouldn’t describe our style as ‘fly on the wall,’” she says, “but most of our clients want candid, natural, in the moment photographs.”

MEET HANNAH HERPIN “Very classic, very romantic….a little traditional,” is how Hannah Herpin describes her style. “I want my work to hold up and not be too dependent on trends or what’s popular. I want my work to look great in ten to twenty years,” she shares. Hannah got started with her career in college, officially launching her business while a student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Although she originally planned to be a graphic designer, she double majored in photography. “All my graphic design work was pretty photo heavy,” she shares and although she had already established her own business, after she graduated, she worked for ad agencies and a newspaper gaining further experience. Her business was fairly well established when she learned she was being laid off at the newspaper, so she decided it was time to put all her efforts into her own company. Working with clients who value photography and make it a priority is something Hannah appreciates. “Someone who’s willing to give me enough time in the schedule or willing to do a first look so we can do portraits in the daylight and trust my expertise” are a match made in heaven for Hannah. “When they tell me, “‘You’ve done this. We trust you. What do you think we should do?,’” she knows it’s a great fit. “I love couples who take their wedding photography seriously, as this is the heirloom they’re going to pass down to the next generation,” she says. “I love a traditional ceremony and working with clients who are organized and have a clean aesthetic; who are really into the family and emotional part of the day.”

For the best photos and experience, Hannah suggests getting creative with your timeline. “It is the best way to set yourself up for successful portraits,” Hannah shares. From moving the ceremony time up to take advantage of the best lighting to considering a sparkler entrance instead of an exit, there are things you can do to think outside the box for your timeline and get the best possible photos. “Really think about what’s important to you and how we can make it work,” she says. Another piece of advice she shares is to “pay a lot of attention to the location that you’re getting ready in. You really need to think of that as a third venue; so many pictures are taken there, so maybe consider how that location ties in to the overall aesthetic of the day.” Great communication is something you can count on when working with Hannah. “My brides will realize we do a lot of communication leading up to the day. We meet in person or skype about your timeline and go hour by hour and do a questionnaire so that way on the day it’s very relaxed and very laid back; we get to be very in the moment and don’t have to scramble.” Hannah encourages couples to meet their photographers halfway to set them up for success. “Give me enough time, enough communication, enough direction,” she says. “If we work together it will be that much easier and that much better.”

MEET JULIANA & BRANDON POLKEY Juliana Polkey has been shooting since she was 16, photographing senior portraits and family photos and when she was 18 officially launched Peony Photography (on her now-husband and co-photographer’s birthday!). Weddings “just clicked” for her. “For some people, weddings stress them out, but for me, I thrive on the pressure of getting the shot in the moment and knowing you only have one chance to get it,” she shares. “It makes it exciting!” After Brandon graduated from college (with an accounting degree), she asked him to assist her on a few weddings. “He never realized why my job was a big deal,” she shares, “but after a few weddings, he realized how much fun it was and how important it was and he’s been working with me full-time ever since - he never became an accountant!” “I just really love how it’s once in a lifetime moments that you can’t recreate and that’s what makes it exciting. We have awesome clients and new clients every day, a new office - it’s not your typical 9-5 job.” “We shoot our weddings with film and digital photography and the reason behind this is we want our photos to be very classic and timeless and romantic. We don’t like to over edit our photos because we feel like planners and brides put a lot of thought into the details of a wedding day and we want to document it accurately and when they look back on it, they look back fondly and how they envisioned it is how we captured it. We’re borderline documentary, but we like editorial.” “You have to be a fly on the wall, watching moments happen and be ready to capture them,” says Brandon. Juliana and Brandon’s ideal client loves their work and sees the value in it. “We know we’re not the cheapest; we’re also not the most expensive,” shares Juliana. “We price ourselves to where we get clients who are down to earth and fun and like to laugh, but they’re also planning beautiful weddings and once it’s all said and done, they’re 44 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com

not stressed, we’re not stressed document.”

it’s super easy to

The couple loves working with clients who rely on them for advice to optimize their photography. “We find that couples reach out to us and say ‘Our ceremony is either going to be a 8 or 6, what’s the best time for photos?” says Brandon. “We know that photography is a priority for them.” Having couples include them in the planning process is ideal. “It’s not just, ‘Here’s our wedding, now show up,’” Brandon shares. Juliana and Brandon are big on showing their clients the back of the camera as they shoot and getting them excited during the process. “We talk them through what we’re doing,” shares Brandon. Their advice to newly engaged couples? “Definitely find someone you click with and figure out what is important to you. Do you want someone who can capture a bunch of candids and joke around with you or do you want someone to tell you where your pinkie goes?” says Juliana. “You’re allowing your photographer to be in on the most intimate parts of your day….all of those things add up and you want someone to ‘get’ you. It’s more than just hiring a business, you’re hiring a person to join in on something you’re spending a lot of money on and put a lot of thought into. Do your research. There are so many photographers and plenty of weddings for everyone - you can find your person.” The couple loves to laugh and says at the end of the day their job is to take stress away from their clients. “We want to see those big smiles. We just want to make the experience as personal and comfortable with lots of laughs and lots of candids but also really beautiful photos you can hang on your wall and say ‘Wow! We look like that!’”

Taylor Zeigler & Charles Sagan NOVEMBER 7, 2020

“NATURALLY NOLA NUPTIALS” WRITTEN BY: Jessica Burke | PHOTOGRAPHER: Catherine Guidry

CHARLIE AND TAYLOR MET AT MILLSAPS COLLEGE WHERE THEY dated most of their college years. The couple lives in New Orleans, but make a trip every summer to Charlie’s family cabin on a lake in Blind River, Ontario. In 2019, this trip would be extra special. “While sitting on the dock, Charlie asked me to go on a walk with him and our dog Chewy,” shares Taylor. “We walked up to this beautiful cliff overlooking the lake. As I was admiring the view, I turned around and he was on one knee and asked me to marry him. I honestly couldn’t have asked for anything better! It was so beautiful!” The couple married at St. George’s Episcopal Church, where they regularly attend services. “It is not only a beautiful church but located on St. Charles which made our New Orleans themed wedding even better as guests were able to watch the street car pass by while we took pictures outside,” says Taylor. “Muriel’s, where our reception was located, is in the heart of the French Quarter. The food and view is what attracted us the most. Our guests were able to look out onto Jackson Square while enjoying cocktail hour.” Pandemic restrictions forced the couple to downsize their guest list from 320 to 40 and the newlyweds were determined to show their guests everything New Orleans had to offer. “We were also lucky enough to Second Line in Jackson Square!” says Taylor. During the reception, artist Denise Hopkins painted their wedding. “The

48 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com

painting is something we will cherish forever,” shares Taylor. “We received so many compliments about her work throughout the reception. Due to our unique reception, she went to the church early and took a picture of the outside, then during the reception she painted people into the painting!.The end result was all our family and friends outside of the beautiful church! She is extraordinarily talented and truly made the wedding so special!” Taylor and Charlie had a unique guest book for their wedding. “The signed champagne bottles were my favorite! I knew from the beginning I wanted something that everyone could sign,” says Taylor. “I needed to get creative because with a smaller crowd the details truly stand out. Both bottles are engraved “The Sagans 1st Anniversary” and “The Sagan’s 5th Anniversary” in gold. It is something we will have forever and will be able to display on our bar cart.” When it comes to wedding planning, Taylor advises, “My best advice is to do what makes you happy and bigger is not always better! In the beginning, we tried to do things based on what we thought people would want and like, but in the end, we realized we wouldn’t be able to please all 320 people. Then Covid threw us for a loop and forced us to downsize. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t devastated, I truly wanted a large wedding with all our family, friends, co-workers etc. Reminiscing on the day, I’m thankful for the small wedding. We were able to talk, mingle, and laugh with every single person in the room!”

Danesha Gibson & Anthony Julien OCTOBER 24, 2020

“ACCIDENTAL ROMANCE” WRITTEN BY: Jessica Burke | PHOTOGRAPHER: Captured by O Studios, LLC

MANY COUPLES MEET BY ACCIDENT, BUT NOT USUALLY IN AN ACTUAL accident like Danesha and Anthony. Danesha was on her way to work one day when Anthony hit her car and then the two hit it off. The couple began dating and the first time they went to church together, the Pastor shared a prophecy: Danesha would never have to worry about another relationship ever again. “It was very unexpected because we had planned to go and look at wedding rings after we left church. For Anthony, that was confirmation that I was to be his wife. He realized even more that God had aligned our paths and placed us on this amazing journey of love,” shares Danesha. Anthony proposed on Super Bowl Sunday, February 2, 2020 during halftime. “We were having a Super Bowl party with family and friends when Athony walked into the place with a dozen roses,” says Danesha. The next thing she knew, he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. “It was very romantic,” she shares. The couple originally planned to get married in October of 2021. “After some consideration and influence from parents and grandparents, we pushed the date up to October of 2020,” says Danesha. They wanted to make sure their grandparents would be able to attend. “The thought of them not being here

52 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com

for the wedding made the decision much easier.” The couple got married on October 24 at The Pearl Room. The venue was able to accommodate their wedding while staying in compliance with pandemic restrictions and made sure that everything was perfect. “Amanda from the Pearl Room was so exceptional and helped to make everything so easy for me,” says Danesha. “We really appreciated the staff along with Mr. Ed who owns the venue. He attended the wedding and made sure everything was done in excellence.” One truly special detail of the wedding day was Danesha’s gold wedding gown. She designed it herself and worked with D&D Creations to create it. “Han of D&D Creations did an excellent job on my gown,” says Danesha. “I told her my vision of what I wanted and she brought it to life. She made some suggestions and worked hand in hand with me and Debbie of D&D created my mask.” Danesha and Anthony had the wedding of their dreams and honeymooned at the Hilton Sandestin in Miramar Beach, Florida. “I would tell newly engaged couples to keep faith first of all,” shares Danesha. “Take their time and search around for what you want. There are a lot of people willing to work with you to make your day special.”

YOUR WEDDING DAY WILL GO BY IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE. ALL THE MONTHS OF PLANNING WILL, IN JUST A FEW short hours, be nothing more than a memory. It’s important to document your wedding day from the big “I do” to the smallest detail. Finding the right photographer for your wedding is important. Good professional photographers are not inexpensive and may be your biggest expense after your reception venue. However, unlike many of your other wedding purchases, photography has longevity. Good photographs will help you treasure and re-live those special moments. Don’t entrust this once in a lifetime occasion to just anyone! Ask any past couple and they’ll tell you that photography is the last thing you want to “cut corners on” for your big day. It’s important to find a photographer who specializes in weddings and has a beautiful portfolio. Wedding photographers have to be more than fine artists though. They have to manage wedding logistics and know the traditions and order of events. With experience comes knowledge. Quality wedding photographers know which shots are important and how to capture them. Find out how long your photographer has been photographing weddings and if your wedding involves cultural customs, be sure to make your photographer aware of these in advance.

Book Early. The best photographers fill their calendars a year or more in advance, so start looking early. Browse through blogs and websites to get a feel for the type of photography you like. Are you attracted to more posed portraits or do the candid photos catch your eye? Once you have a feel for your style preference, it is important you book a photographer whose portfolio shows work in that style. 54 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com

Identify three to five photographers whose work appeals to you and contact them for availability and schedule appointments with those who are open on your date. continued>>>

Personality Matters. Your photographer’s interpersonal skills are as important as their technical knowledge and years of experience. If you are uncomfortable with your photographer it will show in your pictures. Good rapport is key! As you visit with your potentials, carefully look at the photographs on the wall and in the albums. Ask if they have examples of an entire wedding to see how they “tell” the story through images. If you make an emotional connection to a certain photographer’s images, then you have probably found your photographer. If you find yourself thinking, “I really wish they took more posed/candid photos,” then it may be best to move on.

Get it in Writing. You should expect your photographer to provide detailed information. Most have preprinted brochures, rate cards and contracts. Ask lots of questions and get quotes in writing. These should include information about deposits, cancellations, refunds and turnaround time. Ask for details about purchasing prints, proofs, reprints and negatives. Find out if you’re paying for time, prints or both.

Don’t Delay Your Decision. After visiting the photographers on your list, it is important to secure your favorite with a deposit. Photographers cannot hold a date without a deposit and if you wait too long to make your decision, you could lose your first choice. Always get a contract from your photographer detailing everything you’ve agreed to. This should include the pricing and what is included with your photography package. Detailed documentation will avoid future frustrations!

Expectations Managed. Venue Restrictions Be sure you understand your venue’s photography restrictions. Many churches and synagogues do not allow flash photography and many do not permit the photographer to move around during the ceremony. A few don’t allow photography at all! Know what to expect. Your photographer may not be able to get all the photos on your wish list if they’re limited to staying at the back of aisle for the entire ceremony. 56 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com

“Obvious” Questions A typical assumption is that the person you meet with is the one who will be photographing your wedding. Never make assumptions! Always ask who your photographer will be. And while you’re at it ask about backup plans. Obviously, no one ever plans to become sick or get in an accident, but your photographer should have a backup plan in the event that they can’t photograph your wedding. Ask what that backup plan is. Turnaround Time Every photographer has a different process for post production and editing. Some may have proofs ready for you within a week of your wedding, while others may require two months (or more!). Know what to expect and try not to become impatient. Of course, you should expect to receive your photos when promised or at least receive communication from your photographer if there have been unexpected delays like family emergencies. Negative Talk Always ask if you receive the digital negatives from your photos. Some photographers include this in your package, others offer them at an additional cost and some do not offer them at all. Know your photographer’s policy. If you will receive digital files, ask your photographer where they recommend having them printed - not all photo printing companies are created equal. Balancing Act Most photographers require that your balance be paid in full prior to the wedding, usually several weeks before. This is completely normal and should be expected. If the thought of paying upfront before receiving anything makes you nervous, ask for past client references to call. If you’re nervous about the photographer taking your money and running, think twice about hiring that photographer. You should never hire someone you don’t trust. Details, details. Other questions to ask include: How many photographs will be taken? Are there additional travel costs? What types of proofs will I receive - online or printed? What is your cost and policy for adding more time? How much are reprints? Do you have an assistant or second photographer that will be at my wedding? Knowing what to expect can relieve a world of stress. Hire a seasoned professional whose work you love and enjoy your day!

Stephanie Talley & Nicholas Tolat OCTOBER 30, 2020

“MUST LOVE DOGS” WRITTEN BY: Jessica Burke | PHOTOGRAPHER: Jessica Gold Photography

STEPH AND NICK WERE INTRODUCED BY MUTUAL FRIENDS IN MAY OF 2017 and like many couples who were meant to be, they “have been inseparable ever since.” On their first trip to Steph’s hometown, she took Nick to a park with magnificent views of the Mississippi River that she’d visit often. Two years later, Nick would propose at that exact spot. The couple married in October 2020 at Foxhall Resort in Douglasville, Georgia. Steph had originally planned for her uncle, a pastor, to officiate her wedding when the time came. “When he passed, I could only imagine we have my cousin Ginny officiate,” shares Steph. “She has always acted like a big sister to me. She supported me as I went through nursing school. We even lived together during that time. We could not have imagined anyone else but Ginny being the best fit to officiate our wedding.” “Nick grew up going to temple,” shares Steph. “His mother grew up Buddhist, and his father, Hindu...I grew up as a Christian. We wanted to do something special to signify our union that was open to all aspects of religious differences. 60 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com

We decided to do a Unity Box to commence our love. We wanted a sweet memory where we were able to relive our wedding day each year. Our Unity Box contains a His and Hers wine glass, a personalized bottle of Champagne, our vow books, a USB of our wedding videos, and a USB of our photos. We plan to open this on our first anniversary. Each year, we will write a letter to one another, replace the wine bottle, and reminisce on the happiest day of our lives.” “We felt that it was important to include our dogs in the wedding,” says Steph. “so we had our flower girl and ring bearer walk down the aisle with our two adorable dogs, Gus and Mikey.” Steph and Nick had adopted Mikey after seeing him featured in a photo shoot featuring adoptable dogs done for NOW Weddings Magazine in 2019. The wedding reception even featured signature cocktails named after the pups! A favorite moment for both was the First Look. “The first look was such a special moment for us,” says Steph. “ It gave us that one-on-one time to enjoy each other’s company on such a momentous occasion.”
