A New Perspective :: From the Creative Director’s Desk ::

WHILE 2020 HAS BEEN AN UNUSUAL YEAR FOR ALL OF US, I KNOW THAT MANY ARE LOOKING TOWARD THE WINTER with hope that we are reaching a turning point. Jessica Burke, owner and publisher of NOW Weddings Magazine, and I have the same hopes not only for our industry but for this publication as well. We have used this time that our industry has been shut down to consider how we can best connect with couples and vendors, continuing to bring you not only a beautiful publication but one that is an educational resource built upon our more than 40 combined years in the local event and wedding industry. This October issue focuses on micro weddings, not only because many couples are opting to have them this year, but also because we see this as an opportunity. The single biggest factor in any wedding budget is the guest count; the budget dictates what venue you can use, what level of bar service you offer, what type of food you will serve, etc. While we know there is disappointment for the wedding plans you once had, we’d like to encourage you to consider this situation from another perspective: This is your opportunity to have an intimate wedding of those closest to you and treat them to an unbelievable experience! With a small guest count, you’ll have room in the budget to splurge on decor, upgrade the menu, and really do something extra special and unique that you may not otherwise have been able to do. Of course, even though many couples are opting for micro weddings, we’re seeing just as many including their entire original guest list virtually by live streaming the wedding. We wouldn’t want these guests to feel left out, so we’ve also included some fabulous guest box ideas in this issue so that all of your guests who may be watching via live stream can feel even more a part of the celebration with their own mini cake, champagne, favors and more. Jessica and I have seen huge success with the guest boxes we’ve created for micro events over the summer and found that guests absolutely love receiving them! With all of that in mind, I am thrilled as we launch our new digital format along with the interactive features we’ve built in. We hope you’ll enjoy the new connectivity this provides along with behind the scenes footage, interviews and insights like you’ve never seen before. As we continue to be at the forefront of our industry, we’re 6 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com

here to help make your wedding amazing, whatever “amazing” means to you. My favorite quote is by the iconic Dolly Parton, “Find out who you are and do it on purpose.” So whoever you are, take this time to celebrate it! If who you are is to go ahead and get married with a micro wedding now, we’ve got you covered. If you’re a wait for the “big” party person, we’re here for you too. As we shift from bi-annual to monthly issues, we’ll also continue to publish content for those of you who are electing to push back your wedding dates to remain true to what might be your original vision of a larger gathering. With all of our publications now living online, you’ll never have to worry about missing something just because it’s gone from newsstands! You can come back and visit anytime! Of course, you’ll still be able to order a printed copy of the magazine, but with our fully interactive issues, website, vlog and soon to be released NOW Weddings app, we’ve got you virtually covered. Thank you for your continued support of the wedding industry as we work to serve you during these unusual times! Best Wishes,

RenaSweeney

We typically spend 13+ hours on set for our editorial photo shoots and when all the work is done, we like to have a little fun on the set. “For this shoot, I was inspired by the idea of elegant chandeliers laying in the midst of an old building. I immediately knew Tremé Market Branch was the perfect location, with their dedication to the original architectural elements of the building including plaster and beautiful windows that are almost 100 years old. This was one of those times when everything just clicked because I also immediately knew I wanted a beautiful, strong woman dancing on pointe. I could see her jumping the broom with the graceful movements of a ballet dancer and that led to us using blush tones and a lot of tulle for the shoot. We then incorporated a beautiful bouquet that had the same freeform movement as the dancer and a gorgeous invitation with the same soft feminine qualities as the shoot, including the pink colors and beautiful vellum wrap.”

- Rena Sweeney, Alchemy Events

ELEMENT’s crystal ball chandeliers add an amazing vintage glow whether hanging or, as shown here, grouped as elegant conglomerations on the ground. Here we lined the aisle with five foot tall candelabra and gold oval back chairs for guest seating.

From MaeMe The Bridal Boutique, Kaylin is wearing “Ensleigh”. This gown features a plunge neckline, V-side cutouts and V-back details. The sheer bodice includes sparkling linear lace detailing and embroidered tulle. The A-line skirt reveals a sultry split that shows the leg through a thin outer layer of tulle. For Kaylin’s look, Tina Rodosta of Verde Beauty Studio wanted to keep the makeup “light, beautiful and bridal, but defined.” To achieve this, she focused on defining her brows, used a dark eyeliner with a nice highlight finished with a soft pink lip. (ABOVE & RIGHT) Kaylin is wearing A.JAFFE round solitaire engagement ring with matching wedding band; 14 karat white gold bracelet adorned with 7.20 carats of diamonds; 18 karat white gold dangles accentuated with 2.20 carats of diamonds. In 2018, Mari launched her business Passport Polish combining her love of travel with her background in cosmetic chemistry. As a one-woman show, Mari serves CEO, R+D, and test subject for her growing business. Mari faithfully does her nails every Sunday and says she “can never have enough colors.” Each polish in her collections is inspired by a unique characteristic of the specific destination it’s named for. From temperature sensitive, color changing Aruba to Cuba, inspired by Aruba’s pink avians and Cuba’s guava pastries, to China, inspired by Chinese Jade, you can travel the world in spirit (if not in person) with Passport Polish’s inspiring nail colors.

Collection which she describes as “Everything you’ll need for your globally inspired wedding!” Included in the collection are her new jewelry designs that include her Jet-Setter Airport necklace and earrings, the Mrs. Heart necklace and of course a beautiful minty-blue green nail color, Engagement in St. Vincent. So grab your passport and follow along with Mari’s adventures on Instagram @thepassportpolish or visit her website at passportpolish.com

Mari says all her adventures begin at MSY, so of course she’s created an entire collection inspired by the Big Easy. Her New Orleans Collection includes Mari’s personal favorite color, a brilliant green called Hand Greenade; Bleu Dog, inspired by George Rodrigue’s famous paintings; Beignets and Cafe Au Lait, a warm coffee color, as well as four other vibrant colors. But Passport Polish isn’t limited to just nail colors. In her online storefront, you’ll also find her Passport Pout Collections, matte lipsticks and lip glosses also inspired by different countries. Naomi Hill & Kristie Bardell AUGUST 29, 2020

“HER LOVE WINS” WRITTEN BY: Jessica Burke | PHOTOGRAPHER: Capture Studio Photography

In 2015, Naomi Hill found herself relocating to New Orleans, but little did she know that in addition to finding a new home, she’d also find the love of her life. In a chance encounter at the YMCA, Kristie Bardell caught her eye. At first a friendship developed and with their shared love of fitness, the creative arts and a penchant for exploring, their relationship blossomed and they began to see in each other the qualities of an enduring love. After 3 years together, they decided to make their relationship public and announced to their families they planned to get married. On a weekend trip to Denver, Colorado in September 2019, each woman planned to propose to the other. “Neither one knew what to expect over that weekend,” they share. They were, however, excited to make their engagement official! Kristie proposed first on a surprise date to a local speakeasy bar. 24 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com 36 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

She sang a song to Naomi and then gave a speech that brought Naomi to tears before presenting the ring. For her proposal, Naomi created a heart made of rose petals on the bed and scattered petals on the floor of their hotel room. When Kristie came in, with rose petals at their feet and John Legend’s “You and I” playing in the background, the new fiancées danced as Naomi whispered in Kristie’s ear and brought her to tears of joy with a beautiful engagement ring.

Naomi and Kristie’s original plan was to marry on June 13, 2020, New Orleans’ Pride Da,y and celebrate in a grand hotel wedding with 120 of their closest family and friends. They felt this the perfect day to “showcase their relationship and reinforce the true meaning of Love because #HerLoveWins2020.” They had even been able to secure a float in the Annual Pride Parade the night of their wedding! When the pandemic hit and forced closures of local businesses, their plans changed repeatedly. In the end they had “Plan B, plan B-2, plan B-3 and later just call it Plan C,” they share. With multiple location and guest list changes, the brides ultimately ended up changing all their plans entirely and settled on a new venue and a new date and a guest list of just 20 people and their remaining guests joining the fun via live stream! The brides were determined: “Love would not be cancelled!” On August 29th, Naomi and Kristie said “I do” in a glitzy, glamorous dream wedding ceremony filled with pink and purple flowers and then were serenaded by T-Ray the Violinist as they entered their reception. Allison Hymel & Todd Nielsen AUGUST 27, 2020

“THE CROSSING” WRITTEN BY: Jessica Burke | PHOTOGRAPHER: Your Day Photography

Allison and Todd’s story begins the way many love stories do today - online. The couple met virtually on Bumble and had their first in-person date at Bayou Wine Garden. When it came time to propose, Todd chose the perfect location - Popp Fountain in City Park. You see, not only is this historic Art Deco fountain beautiful, it’s also the same place years ago that Allison’s grandfather proposed to her grandmother! Todd convinced Allison they were doing a normal Sunday afternoon with his kids, Ashton and Blythe, and meeting friends at City Bark, which happens to be across the street from the fountain. When they arrived early, he suggested they walk around the fountain to pass the time. “As we're walking up, I bring up the story about my grandparents,” shares Allison. 30 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com 14 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

“You see, my Grandma's response to my Grandpa's proposal was, ‘I don't know. I'm tired. Ask me tomorrow.’" Helping to buy time, Ashton asked, ‘Well did he ask again the next day?’ and Allison replied, ‘He sure did! And it's a good thing because I wouldn't be here today if he didn't.’" As they walked up to the fountain, Blythe announced, "I think my dad should propose to you here!" As Allison walked on ahead, she said, "I think that would be a great idea!" Todd responded, "Will you make me ask you again tomorrow?" Allsion, completely caught off guard, turned and asked "Whaat?" Todd dropped to one knee and asked her to marry him “I, of course, said yes!” says Allison. “We walked around the fountain a little bit more and then went back to [our] home. My parents, brother, sister-in-law and nieces were waiting next door with champagne to celebrate!”

Todd’s children were their witnesses for the intimate outdoor ceremony at The Crossing in historic Rivertown. Allison’s brother sang “Ave Maria” and to include family and friends who couldn’t attend in person, they had the ceremony live streamed by their photography and video team, Your Day Video and Photography. Allison says the live streaming experience was wonderful. “The best was reading the comments left by those who tuned in and getting messages and pictures of people's celebrations at home,” she says.

Although Allison and Todd originally intended to plan a small, simple ceremony in the park and save a big celebration for later, Allison shares, “I was given the advice to plan this wedding in a way that there would be no regrets if a second larger celebration couldn't happen for one reason or another. Three weeks later, I had a gown; we had a baker, venue, florist, photographer, musicians, decor gurus and were facing 2 hurricanes heading our way. It was insane! In the end, it was a version of my dream wedding I didn't know existed.”

Ashley Jackson & Peter Rupp AUGUST 8, 2020

“SMOOTH SAILING WRITTEN BY: Jessica Burke | PHOTOGRAPHER: Trevor Mark

Peter and Ashley's story began when the two were in high school, each a member of opposing sailing teams. Fortunately, theirs was a friendly rivalry and after 5 years as friends, their relationship blossomed into love when the two discovered they were both moving to Colorado. Ashley eventually found herself in New Orleans pursuing her Master's Degree in Architecture at Tulane; Peter found himself visiting her often. For his 30th birthday, Ashley took Peter on a surprise trip to New York. Unbeknownst to her, he, too, had a surprise planned. Peter had no idea where they were going, but he did know one thing - he was going to propose when they got there! Peter's mother was confidant in both Ashley and Peter's secret plans and helped arrange a carriage ride in Central Park to make the occasion special. It was a rainy day in New York as they took photos in the carriage at Bethesda Fountain and Peter proposed. Ashley, of course, said yes! 38 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

The ceremony was short and sweet, and intimate," shares Ashley, adding it "might be [my] most favorite" part of the day. Ashley and Peter had just 19 guests at their wedding but were sure to make time to FaceTime their friends and family who could not attend in person. "Hanging out with everyone a lot because the party was so small was a silver lining to the whole ordeal," shares Ashley.

To Stream Or Not To Stream? Everything you didn’t know you need to know about live streaming your wedding.

By Jessica Burke, Publisher, NOW Weddings Magazine Photo: Capture Studio Photography

PLANNING A WEDDING COMES WITH SO MANY THINGS TO CONSIDER AND NOW THANKS TO SOCIAL DISTANCING necessities, couples have so much more to think about and more decisions than ever to make. While sorting out a guest list may have been a harrowing challenge pre-pandemic, it can be even more difficult now - or easier if you were looking for an excuse not to invite someone, or many someones...we’re not judging. So let’s say that local restrictions require a more “intimate” guest list, but your original “must invite” file was upwards of Bourbon Street on Mardi Gras night; or, let’s say you have very important guests, like grandparents or family and friends living abroad, who just can’t be there in person due to health reasons or travel restrictions. Sometimes postponing just isn’t an option, but that doesn’t mean those guests have to imagine what your wedding was like. This is where live streaming comes in. Thankfully technology is pretty awesome and can help keep us connected even when we’re far apart. But the first question is, who should be in charge of this very important job? In a pinch many couples start taking volunteers from their guest list for tasks like these, but is this really how you want your guests spending their time? “We’re all really thankful Aunt Sally is a champ and has volunteered to hold her phone perfectly still and level for the full duration of your wedding ceremony,” says Brian Jarreau of HootDown, a local live streaming service, “but later, when it’s time to dance, she’s going to be wiped out, which is unfortunate because everyone knows she’s the best at ‘Cupid Shuffle.’ No no, I kid, but really, your guests are just that, guests, and though no one really minds doing it, someone will inevitably mind how it’s done.” 38 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com

LaVina Bostock of Your Day Video and Photography agrees that how the live streaming is done matters. “We are bringing our many years of video experience to the table,” she shares. “We are not just using a phone or tablet to shoot with.” Pros like HootDown and Your Day Video and Photography use professional cameras. Yes, cameras, as in more than one camera and upwards of four, to cover your event and they can switch between views seamlessly too thanks to their production level equipment. This means that your guests watching from afar see a more interesting and engaging broadcast of your wedding, instead of watching from one person’s perspective. Apologies to Aunt Sally. So what’s the difference between a traditional wedding video and live streaming you may ask? “Live Streaming is different from the traditional wedding video in the fact that we are allowing your guests that are not able to attend your ceremony the experience to watch it live as if they were there,” says Bostock. Jarreau adds, “Live streams and traditional wedding videos are very different in execution. Picture the differences between watching a feature-length film versus a reality TV show. Both are captivating and offer a different look and feel in the content

For a traditional video, the camera person will follow the couple throughout the day and capture creative angles and highlights and then go back to their office and edit everything together into a beautiful, movie-like, polished finished product. This means you’ll wait weeks to months (totally worth it, btw) to receive your video due to the time it takes to edit together the finished product. With live streaming, your guests won’t have to wait to see your wedding, because they’ll be in the middle of the action as it happens! Also, totally worth it. Adding live streaming to your wedding doesn’t have to break the bank either. Your Day Video and Photography offers live streaming packages starting at $400 for their one-camera live streaming services and HootDown’s prices start at just $750 and include 4 camera coverage among other perks. Both companies will provide you with a copy of the video to watch later too! That’s what I call money well spent! So, let’s say you’ve decided to invest in a live stream. The next question most people have is: “What platform is THE BEST for live streaming?” Well folks, the experts have weighed in and the answer is all of them. Not kidding. Literally any platform out there will work just fine, but some have perks that make them a better choice depending on the event details. “We’re able to live stream to all of the popular current services available and even multiple platforms simultaneously,” shares Jarreau. “When posed with the question of which should I use, it’s important to think about the people who will be watching your live stream. What is the general age group of your guests? We find that YouTube is the most accessible and familiar platform to use for most guests. Facebook is also a great place to broadcast from but your guests will need a Facebook account and sometimes a little more knowledge on the user interface of the platform. Platforms like Twitch and Zoom are also available but again require the user to have an account.”

recorded concert or presentation is great, but experiencing it live is such an intrinsic and emotional experience.” “We have had many couples whose grandparents were not able to attend due to covid restrictions,” says Bostock. “With the live stream, they were able to watch as if they were there. I highly recommend live streaming your ceremony so that guests can feel a part of your day.” So go ahead and explore your live streaming options and get your whole guest list in on the festivities whether they’re near or far. they are conveying. The film is just that, a polished cinematic vision that’s taken an expansive amount of time to render and produce. The reality show has a visceral live-action feeling that exhibits realistic, lifelike action.”

If you’re still on the fence about live streaming, take some time to consider how important this video will be to you years from now. “I’m a wedding photographer, when the pandemic hit, our entire world, like everyone else’s, was thrown into disarray,” shares Jarreau. “Brides who had been planning their perfect wedding day since childhood were suddenly facing a challenge no one had ever considered. My phone rang for 3 weeks straight, couple after couple postponing their weddings, looking for any sort of solution to the insanity. In early April a good friend of mine had a small ceremony on Zoom - all of our friends were there; it was a beautiful little gathering. This got me thinking - since some of our couples had decided to still move forward with their ceremonies, but only 10 people, how could we still include their hundreds of previously invited guests? I spent nearly a month working to piece together a solution that would work and HootDown was born. It’s already difficult for some folks to travel, with age, kids, work, and costs that can be prohibitive. Live streaming your wedding for folks who just can’t make it is such an easy and selflessly inclusive solution. Watching a pre-

Melanie Parent & Duke Williams APRIL 25, 2020

“DUKE AND DUCHESS” WRITTEN BY: Jessica Burke | PHOTOGRAPHER: Calvin Gavion, Jr.

“We met at NOPSI for the first time,” shares Melanie, “and on the way up to the rooftop bar this guy made the comment that we made a good looking couple.” Although Duke was quick to note they weren’t together, the two struck up a conversation and as Melanie puts it, “We really clicked.” Duke had a dramatic proposal planned with him jumping off a float during the NOMTOC Mardi Gras parade, but the engagement ring didn’t make it in time due to traffic. Instead of the original public proposal, afterwards, Duke took Melanie to a gazebo in her parents’ backyard and popped the question. “As I turned,” Melanie shares, “he was on one knee with the ring! He asked me if I would spend the rest of my life with him, if I would marry him. I just remember hugging him, and he was like, ‘so, is that a yes?’ I said, ‘Yes!’” 40 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com 72 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

“At the original reception we wanted something that would represent our guests pouring into our marriage,” Melanie shares. “We understood the importance of our family and friends pouring into our lives and helping us along the way. The idea was the guests would pour some sand in the vase to represent how they’ve helped us along the way. It also represented the blending of our families together, and Duke and I becoming One!”

For their “mini reception”, the couple returned to the place they met, NOPSI Hotel. The couple posed for photos and cut their cake in the hotel lobby. Their first dance, however, took place outside the hotel: “We really enjoyed dancing in the street, how often do you get an empty street in New Orleans to have your first dance?” says Melanie. After the wedding, artist Christina Pappion painted their first dance, a beautiful work of art for the couple to remember the moment forever! Imagine saying your vows in this fanciful ceremony setting that features a tiered fringe wall, iridescent decorative panels with matching aisle runner and lots of fun balloons and flowers! You can change the mood by changing the lighting colors!

“I’ve always found that couples who look to me for design and planning services do so because they want something truly unique, whether it’s a traditional element taken to the next level or something completely out of the box. However, in more recent years, we are really seeing an explosion of couples wanting to truly express themselves in their wedding designs more so than in the past. So what about that couple who just wants a crazy, fun party with their friends and family? They may take traditional elements and put a spin on them, such as a white outfit that’s topped with lots of colorful details, a cake made from cotton candy or a veil that just so happens to be attached to a funky head wrap. This shoot was all about embracing that crazy, fun side of things for couples who don’t care if they follow a traditional path, as long as it’s a celebration of their love!”

Caitlin Bumby & Donald Roof JUNE 13, 2020

“SECOND LINE SATURDAY” WRITTEN BY: Jessica Burke | PHOTOGRAPHER: Dark Roux

“Caitlin and Donald dreamed of a biophilia wedding that encompassed their love of New Orleans, plants and music," shares Alchemy Events Planner Rena Sweeney. "Caitlin works in evolutionary biology and is pursuing her Ph. D. while Donald works in the local music industry. We planned a 120 person wedding that would marry each of those passions as we married the two of them." When it comes to choosing her favorite parts of the wedding day, Caitlin has a few moments that stand out: "Donald showing up 20 minutes before the first look was supposed to take place because he was too excited, the second line coming THROUGH our house and then parading around the block with us, and our neighbor Bay Bay joining us!" Donald's favorite moment of the day was seeing Caitlin for the first time. It's a moment he describes as "breathtaking." 54 | N.O.W | NOWWeddingMagazine.com 70 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

One of the original wedding details was an elaborate display of meringue mushrooms. Even with all the other changes, the couple were still able to enjoy this special treat for their micro wedding.

Although most of Caitlin and Donald's original 120 guests attended their back porch nuptials via Zoom, they did have 3 friends celebrate with them in person and were thrilled to count their cats, Buck and Roux, as unofficial witnesses for the wedding. The cats watched the wedding from inside the house and even "helped" with wedding preparations by eating Donald's boutonniere!
