Smile Bright for the Wedding Paparazzi YOUR WEDDING DAY WILL BE ONE OF THE MOST PHOTOGRAPHED DAYS OF YOUR ENTIRE LIFE. No seriously, not only will your pro photographer and video team be documenting your every move, but so will every guest in attendance and admit it, there’s probably going to be more than a selfie or two happening as well. Making your smile as bright as your love and enhancing your wedding day “glow” are specialties of our sponsors Canatella Dental. If you’ve ever wondered what cosmetic procedures are possible or just what they involve, read on to learn more! Who doesn’t want a bright, white smile for their wedding photos? KöR Teeth Whitening is an option if you want perfectly white teeth for the great big smile that you’ll be wearing your entire wedding day. More powerful than at-home teeth whitening options, KöR Whitening not only creates more dramatic results, it’s also faster. Imagine having a dramatically brighter smile in just one hour! If you’re facing other dental challenges, such as worn enamel, chips or cracks that make you want to improve your smile, Porcelain Veneers may be the perfect solution for you. Canatella offers complimentary consultations in their Lakeview office to help patients determine if veneers are the best option for them. The actual process is easy, quick and usually completed in just two brief office visits. In as little as a few minutes per tooth, patients have a brand new smile! For the bride who would like a subtle pout (Hello! Who’d like extra kissable lips at the altar?!), Juvéderm increases fullness and lessens the appearance of

8 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

wrinkles around your cheeks and lips, restoring your youthful glow. A bride favorite and Canatella’s most requested procedure, is BOTOX Cosmetic. You probably have heard of BOTOX Cosmetic for it’s ability to smooth fine lines on your forehead and around your eyes, but did you know the whole procedure takes only about 10 minutes and the results are almost instant? Also since results usually last for a few months, BOTOX Cosmetic is great for looking fresh and well rested for not only your wedding day, but for all the events leading up to it. Now, just how far in advance should you plan these procedures? Depending on the procedure, you will want to schedule your appointments anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months ahead of your wedding day. BOTOX Cosmetic should be placed 2-3 weeks prior to your wedding as should Juvéderm Ultra or Ultra Plus. This timeframe, shares Canatella, allows for any additional enhancements needed prior to the big day. KöR Whitening, Canatella suggests,

should be done at least 2 weeks prior to the wedding, but can be done months in advance so that you have a gorgeous, bright smile from the engagement party all the way through the honeymoon. If you’re considering Veneers, these can be completed in as little as 4-6 weeks, but it’s always best to get started as early as possible. At Canatella’s complimentary consultation, they’ll discuss all the options they have for you. If you decide Veneers are the right option for you, with just a few photographs and impressions they can have a wax model made for you in no time. This helps to ensure the best results and allows you to visualize exactly what your dream smile will look like before you even start treatment. Canatella Dental offers all of these procedures and more in their Lakeview office and help not only brides and grooms, but bridal parties and mothers of the occasion to look their best. Canatella treats their patients with comprehensive care and looks to improve not only their smile but their overall health. Visit CanatellaDental.com or call 504-265-1337 to learn more.

Blair Ridgley & Patrick Hennessey OCTOBER 7, 2017

PHOTOGRAPHER: Theresa Elizabeth Photography | WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio

SOMETIMES MOTHERS DO KNOW BEST. Greta and Paula always knew their children would make a good couple. The problem was convincing Blair, Greta’s daughter, and Patrick, Paula’s son, that it was a good idea. In June 2010, the stealthy matriarchs came up with a plan. The New Orleans Saints had won their first Super Bowl and one of Greta’s relatives, a Saints employee, planned to show off his championship ring at a party. Paula knew her son would come to the party just for that. Greta called her daughter that day and encouraged her to come over and to bring the child she was babysitting. “Like many other 19-year-olds, we were embarrassed that our moms did this. It was a very awkward first meeting,” Blair says. “We talked to each other for about five minutes and Patrick promised to ‘look out for me at LSU.’ We were both at LSU at the time.” Blair never thought he’d follow up, but he did. Soon, the two were inseparable. Blair’s a huge fan of Mardi Gras, something Patrick knows well. The pair were watching the Krewe of Thoth parade on Feb. 7, 2016 when float #13, Winged Gods.” came to a dead stop. A voice over a loud speaker called Blair’s name and asked her to come into the middle of the street. Patrick held her hand and walked with her. That moment, photographed and videotaped by friends and strangers, he took to one knee as cheers and confetti showered over them. Blair said, and nodded, yes. The pair kissed one, two, three, at least six times. The cheers continued.

32 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

About 300 guests were scheduled to attend the couple’s October 7, 2017 ceremony at New Orleans’ St. Joseph Church and reception at Chateau Golf and Country Club in Kenner. Then another mother tried to get involved: Mother Nature. Hurricane Nate, a category one storm, was whirling towards the city. On Friday, one day before the wedding, Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced a city curfew would begin Saturday at 7 p.m. Coincidentally, Blair and Patrick’s wedding was scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The scramble began. Blair and a few bridesmaids, Patrick and some groomsmen and family members from both sides called every guest to announce the wedding time had been changed to 1 p.m., six hours earlier. Blair used social media to announce the adjustment, as did the Country Club. “My family and friends really came through with helping spread the word about the time change,” Blair says. “I never thought I’d be using Facebook to announce the change in time to my wedding.” The next afternoon, as Blair and her father stepped out of a Rolls Royce to walk into the church, a gust of wind blew off her veil. (It was retrieved by the photographer.) The rain began to fall once the bridal party was inside the church. The ceremony went off without a hitch. Of course, the rain had completely stopped by 7 p.m., the original wedding start time. “Hurricane Nate may have tried to stop us, but nothing was going to hold me back from marrying my best friend,” Blair says. “Seeing his face as I walked down the aisle made me forget everything we’d been through.”

Kaylan Guzman & Brad Schauer OCTOBER 22, 2017

PHOTOGRAPHER: North Photography | WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY” IS ONE OF KAYLAN GUZMAN’S favorite movies, so when boyfriend Brad Schauer suggested they watch it on New Year’s Eve 2016, she readily agreed. As the movie neared its end, she anxiously awaited her favorite scene – when Harry confesses his love for Sally. Instead, the film cut out and photos of Kaylan and Brad began drifting across the screen. “There was no malfunction. Brad had inserted our own love story into the movie,” Kaylan says. “I was immediately overwhelmed with emotion.” And then Harry and Sally were back and Harry was delivering his famous speech that concludes, “I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible…” Scrambled letters then danced across the screen to form a message from Brad: “How about now?” “With tears rolling down my cheeks, I said, ‘Yes!’” Kaylan says. Forecasters said there was 100 percent chance of rain on October 22, 2017. Instead, the sky was clear as Kaylan and Brad exchanged vows

38 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

before 135 guests on the front lawn of Southern Oaks Plantation. Faith is an important part of the couple’s life – they met at church and belong to a Bible study group called “Three Strands” – so they incorporated the Biblical scripture from which the group derives its name into their ceremony: “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not easily broken (Ecclesesiastes 4:12).” After exchanging vows, Kaylan and Brad braided three cords to represent the strong relationship between themselves and God. The night was magical, they say, made even more so with a surprise fireworks display and a mini-Mardi Gras parade complete with jazz band, two Carnival floats with riders tossing glow sticks and beads. “We screamed and laughed and danced!” Brad says. Brad’s last name is pronounced like “shower” and couple’s wedding hashtag was #SchaueredWithLove. It couldn’t have been more perfect, he says. During the course of our relationship and engagement, we felt very much ‘showered by love,’ by each other and by our family and friends,” he says. “It just seemed fitting.”

Marie Cupit & Tony Stahlschmidt JULY 15, 2017

PHOTOGRAPHER: Megan Crawford Photography | WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio

THE HASHTAG FOR TONY STAHLSCHMIDT AND MARIE CUPIT’S July 15, 2017 wedding was #MeetMeInStLouis, a simple sentence with multiple meanings for the couple. Tony is from St. Louis, where he now lives with native Louisianan Marie. The French Quarter’s St. Louis Cathedral is where they said their vows. And saints – more specifically, The New Orleans Saints – brought them together. In October 2011, Marie was wearing her Black and Gold in the Superdome as the Saints took on the Indianapolis Colts. One of the men sitting near her – Tony, of course -- was a St. Louis Cardinals fan in town on a short-term construction project. He was trying to follow Game 4 of the World Series while following the football game before him but his phone wasn’t cooperating. Marie was happy to help and soon they were sitting side by side. After one particularly brilliant touchdown pass from quarterback Drew Brees to wide receiver Marques Colston, Marie predicted the play would make ESPN’s SportsCenter weekly top 10 list. “We made a bet on it and that was how Tony was able to ask for my

52 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

number,” Marie says. “Our conversation that night was sparked by our love of sports.” And as their best man noted in his wedding speech, their relationship, “Tony loved Marie’s enthusiasm for sports and they started to root for each other and each other’s teams.” During their five-year long-distance relationship, the couple’s appreciation for each other and the unique cultures of their home states grew. That came through on their wedding day. “We thought it was important to incorporate both of our family and community traditions,” Marie says. Nods to St. Louis included replacing a groom’s cake with Ted Drewes Frozen Custard. New Orleans traditions included a Second Line from the Cathedral to the Riverview Room on the top floor of Jax Brewery and traditional fare like gumbo and mini-muffulettas. “Our St. Louis guests loved how, in true New Orleans fashion, the party started upon arrival and the dance floor was never empty,” Marie says. “We were so thrilled to return to the city that brought us together for our wedding!”

“No matter how hard you try, no matter how small the wedding, stress is an inevitable part of such a major life event,” says Kristen Machado, a licensed and nationally certified professional counselor. “Any time we go through changes, even positive ones like getting married, our bodies feel the shift and there’s a ripple effect that feels disruptive.” That stress only intensifies as couples strive to please others while staying true to their own vision, struggle to stay within budget and deal with on-going family dramas. Then there’s creating and culling the guest list, juggling the many moving parts of a modern wedding, and, most importantly, maintaining a happy and healthy relationship with each other. Planning experts recommend making that last item a focus throughout the planning period. Machado tells couples to write down their reasons for getting married before they find themselves losing hours to Pinterest and Instagram and it all seems overwhelming. “When having to decide between the cream or the beige napkins feels like the biggest decision in the world, you will want something grounding to come back to,” Machado says. “You aren’t marrying each other for the napkin colors. The reasons are much more long-lasting and much more important.” Kim Sayatovic, founder and creator of Belladeux Event Design, says even the most in-love couples will have different ideas as to what makes the perfect wedding. She advises couples to share lists of wedding “must-haves” and make efforts to ensure each partner gets at least one item. “He may not care about anything but the music, and you couldn’t care less about that, but the flowers are super important to you. Then let him plan the music and you plan the flowers,” Sayatovic says. “The more you communicate with each other, the more fun you will have 70 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

bringing it all together.” Deciding what’s important early on will make dealing with meddling family members and friends all the easier. After all, Donna Accardo of Inner Design, an organization dedicated to supporting individual and collective life purpose, says, this is your wedding and no one else’s. “Years ago, I was a bridesmaid in my best friend’s wedding. The pink satin dress with roses that she’d chosen for me was NOT something I found beautiful,” Accardo recalls. “But what I did find beautiful was honoring my best friend’s vision. She asked me to stand for her and I wore that dress with grace and respect, explosion of pink satin and all.” Perhaps one of the biggest wedding planning stressors is budget. Money, Machado notes, is an emotional subject, with individuals having unique backgrounds and experiences with money. She recommends couples share their individual ideas about spending long before the wedding, but even having an honest conversation in the moment is worthwhile. “What are their expectations regarding the wedding budget and how would they like to approach everything related to spending?” Machado says. “Remember to be honest about your own thoughts and feelings, especially concerns or fears. By being honest with yourself, you're less likely to project your feelings onto your partner and create additional problems.” Then there are all the “helpful” family and friends who have lots of great ideas they couldn’t incorporate into their own weddings or that they saw while flipping through a magazine or while watching TV. Instead of curling up and conceding, take a deep breath and speak your mind, tactfully, advises Angie D’Ingianni, Executive Director of Absolutely Nola, a creative wedding planning and design team. “It's all about how you handle it,” D’Ingianni says. “Be willing to listen, consider and incorporate ideas you’re comfortable with, trying not to hurt

feelings while still keeping yourself happy.” Making a guest list can be like walking through a minefield. Monetary concerns may mean the list may have to be shorter than a couple would like. Family conflicts can also be a concern. “The best advice I can give couples is to talk to problem relatives early. I suggest, ‘I know there is a problem between you and so-and-so and I am asking for you to be cordial for one weekend (or night). If you truly think you can’t do that, then I prefer you not attend the wedding.’ Hurt feelings will happen, but it’s better to deal with the drama ahead of time,” Sayatovic says. “There’s nothing wrong with reminding people that the weekend is about you and your union and not about whatever drama they can’t get over.” Even those that follow this expert advice may feel overwhelmed. Signs of stress include sleeplessness, eating too much or too little and feeling short– tempered. Step away from the wedding binder, D’Ingianni advises. The to-do lists can wait a day or two. “If you are starting to have anxiety on a day-to-day basis, it's time to take a break. Make a list of the things that are consuming you and reach out for help,” D’Ingianni says. “If you find yourself feeling angry with your partner, be sure to go on date nights and to do things you enjoyed before the wedding planning began.” And remember to talk to your partner. Be honest about what you want and need. If something doesn’t feel like you, say so now or forever hold your peace. (And no one likes holding their peace.) “This is your wedding and will be the beginning of hopefully a lifetime of decisions,” Accardo says. “You will have to know what’s true for you in your marriage, your career, how you raise your children, if you want children. Start the journey with authenticity and truth.”

Emily Castro & Jesse Edmondson MAY 13, 2017

PHOTOGRAPHER: G. Chapin Studios | WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio

AN ARCHITECT BY TRADE, EMILY CASTRO WAS THRILLED to learn her favorite historic home – Race & Religious – needed renovation. On the day she was to meet clients at the site, she excitedly reminded boyfriend Jesse Edmondson of the appointment. His response? “A quick and simple ‘Cool’ as he ran out the door,” Emily says. At the property that afternoon, a group of girls met Emily and offered her a tour before the meeting. That’s when she saw Jesse, wearing a suit and tie, waiting for her. Had he been hired to work on the property too? (He’s a landscape architect.) Why hadn’t he mentioned it? And why was he so well-dressed? “He looked really nice, too nice to be on a landscape appointment!” Emily says. Then Jesse dropped to one knee. “It was totally unexpected, especially because it was the middle of the day during Jesse’s busiest season and two days before my birthday,” Emily says. “It will forever be the one appointment I will never forget.” On May 13, 2017, Emily and Jesse stood before 200 guests at St. Louis Cathedral. In a nod to Emily’s Honduran roots, the couple added two Hispanic traditions to their ceremony.

82 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

After exchanging vows, Jesse handed Emily 13 gold coins (Arras), symbolizing his pledge to support her. Emily then returned the coins to Jesse, showing acceptance of his support. Before the nuptial blessing, a large rosary known as “the Lasso” was placed around Emily and Jesse to symbolize their unity. “It was very special to incorporate traditions from my culture into our wedding,” Emily says. Jesse’s traditions were also featured – specifically, his love for the NFL’s Buffalo Bills. Deacon Jeff Tully incorporated Jesse’s rabid fandom into the ceremony. A Second Line through the French Quarter took guests to The Jaxson, the couple’s reception site. There, Jesse’s sister played a video featuring Bills’ players congratulating the newlyweds. “If anyone knows Jesse, the first thing they’ll tell you about is his love for the Bills. Jesse was in complete disbelief as he watched the video,” Emily says. “Our wedding day played out better than we could have ever imagined. It really was the best days of our lives.” The best day of their lives, that is, until the Buffalo Bills finally win a Super Bowl.

Amanda Klevorn & Dan Chiorean FEBRUARY 11, 2017

PHOTOGRAPHER: Sam Gregory | WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio

ON THE SAME DAY AS AN ANNUAL EVENT KNOWN FOR its humor and irreverence – Krewe du Vieux Saturday -- Amanda Klevorn and Dan Chiorean married in a ceremony that was humorous and irreverent. Or, as their wedding hashtag and go-cups attested, #AtKreweduVieuxWeSaidIDo. “We thought it would be fun to expose our family and friends to the most Mardi Gras parade there is, the only one that actually comes with a warning in the description that it’s not family-friendly,” Dan says. And so, on February 11, 2017, before 120 guests in the courtyard of the W French Quarter Hotel, Dan swore to accept Amanda’s love of the St. Louis Cardinals, no matter how obnoxious she became; to willingly search the attic for an obscure book she suddenly decided she MUST HAVE (emphasis Amanda’s); and to overlook her unusual love of eating spaghetti and beans, sometimes multiple times a week. Amanda vowed to keep Dan supplied with Nutella and jam; to cheer on his beloved University of Michigan Wolverines; and to welcome at least 50 more rescue dogs into their home. (The latter promise was met with approval from Dex, the couple’s boxer, who served as their ring bearer.) Then, because these two transplants met at Tulane University Law School, they sealed the deal with a promise that sounded sufficiently lawyer-like: Do each of you vow that there will be no alternative facts to mar or mitigate these vows? “We do.” “The vows were meant to be a reflection of who we are and our

86 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

relationship,” Dan says. “We thought they were just kinda fun, but our family and friends were roaring with laughter.” The wedding was the culmination of a romance that had begun years earlier on Tulane’s Louisiana State Bar Association moot court trial team. Dan, in his third year of law school, was the coach. Amanda, in her second year, was a team member. His first impression of her? She held her arms awkwardly, like a T-Rex, while presenting a closing argument. (Amanda disputes this description of her arms.) Her first impression of him? He paid more attention to his computer than to the team. “But I also thought he was cute,” Amanda says. (Dan does not dispute that description of his appearance.) After the ceremony, the couple and their guests second lined through Jackson Square to their Decatur Street reception venue, B.B. King’s Club. The out-of-towners “enjoyed dancing and reveling in the streets,” Dan says. From the club’s second floor balcony, they watched Krewe du Vieux pass. Among the items tossed to the marchers: Amanda’s bouquet, which was caught by a woman wearing a unicorn costume. They later learned, thanks to the magic of mutual friends and social media, that the unicorn was engaged to be married a month later. “It was definitely one of my favorite moments at the wedding,” Amanda says. Dan agrees, “It was one of the coolest things that happened. We’re forever connected because of that moment.”

SWEET Selections Written by Jean Hailey

A WEDDING CAKE IS THE UNIVERSALLY SERVED CREATIVE CONFECTION for all weddings. You deserve to have a cake that is not only delicious, but one that you both will remember forever. Luckily, today, artistic bakers are creating cakes as edible art. Many couples still go with the traditional-looking wedding cake, but inside this wonderful package might be surprises, such as non-traditional cake flavors and fillings. You can have whatever kind of cake you want! CHOOSE A DESIGN The number of wedding cake designs is endless. Almost anything is possible. As you begin your search for the ultimate wedding cake, expect to see creations you never imagined; cakes resembling beautiful geodes, mirror glaze finishes that shine, and just about anything you can imagine. You will see cakes that you can’t envision actually slicing. Your cake should coordinate with the rest of your wedding. The wedding cake decision should be made after you have made the decisions about the dress style, theme, and reception décor. These basic decisions can serve as a guideline for the design of your wedding cake. Along 88 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

with your baker, create a cake that will be a beautiful part of your wedding, not a sideshow. IT'S ALL ABOUT FLAVOR One of the hardest decisions can be the selection of the flavor. You might consider a multi-flavored cake. This is a wonderful option if you want to give your guests diversity. Consider seasonal possibilities paired with more traditional flavors. Or even different layers featuring each of your favorite flavors. The texture and flavor of the cake is important so when you’re out shopping don’t hesitate to ask for samples of cake flavors.

ADDITONAL DESSERT OPTIONAL A question often asked is, should you serve dessert in addition to the wedding cake? Experts will say that there’s no absolute rule. Some brides do serve dessert in addition to their cake, especially if their budget is not an issue. But extra dessert is in no way mandatory. The wedding cake is created to eat, even though you hate to see such a beautiful work of art sliced. Most couples expect them to be the main dessert. You might even consider serving a small wedding cake as a part of an extravagant dessert rather than as the main dessert. Individual wedding cakes for each guest are in vogue. Non-traditional options like Macaron towers, wedding pies, and more are also available! THE SEARCH BEGINS Begin shopping for the wedding cake six months to a year before the date, even earlier if you’ve envisioning a truly unique cake, if the bakery you have chosen is very popular, or if you are being married in a peak season. Make sure that you are familiar with the style and quality of the chef’s work before you sign your contract. When shopping for the perfect cake artist, come prepared. Be sure to bring all the specifics about the size and type of wedding you are having, as well as information about the reception location, room décor, ceiling height, temperature, lighting, linens, and wedding colors. Also have the names and numbers of your caterer, florist, wedding planner, and anyone else the baker may wish to contact in order to consult and coordinate the details and delivery. Most importantly, interview bakers in person, ask lots of questions, bring photographs of designs that you like, and then determine if they are qualified to create the impression you are looking for. As you check out their portfolio, make sure that you are looking at cakes that they have actually made personally, and

not just pictures in magazines and books. Magazines and books are great for exciting ideas, but you need to see the baker’s actual workmanship and level of proficiency. It is your responsibility to find the perfect cake designer, but it is your designer’s responsibility to grasp your dreams and make them a reality. GET A PRICE Wedding cakes are usually priced per slice. But the baker determines what the per slice charge will be. When you place your order and make your deposit, get a written agreement or contract that specifies the kind of cake, filling and frosting, the number of people it will serve, the design details you have agreed upon, and the delivery date, time, and procedure. Also, put in writing any additional fees or rental charges, and ask how the final payment is to be made and when. For many brides, a wedding cake is a major part of their reception. There are hundreds of alternative and fun ideas for wedding cake designs that will surprise and delight all of your guests. Find an expert online at theNOWBride.com to create the perfect wedding cake. The cake may be the only thing that you have a chance to sit down and eat the entire day, so make sure it’s delicious and an amazingly, sweet, sweet selection.

QUESTION FOR YOUR BAKER n How many years have you been in business? n Do you have references? n May I see your portfolio? n Have you made all of the cakes in your portfolio yourself? n Do you charge additional for each layer of the cake being different flavors? n Do you charge additional for fillings? n Is there a delivery fee? n Do you rent cake stands? If so, what is the charge and what options are available? n What type of retainer fee do you require? n When is the balance is due? n How soon do you bake the cake before the wedding? n What time will you deliver the cake on my wedding day? n Do you customize cakes, or do I have to pick a design in your portfolio? n What days are best for me to reach you? n Do you have cake tastings? n Do you specialize in any particular technique or art form?

Brittany Barbier & Vincent Clark SEPTEMBER 16, 2017

PHOTOGRAPHER: Images by Robert T | WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio

IT’LL BE HARD TO FIND A WEDDING MORE QUINTESSENTIALLY New Orleans than the September 2017 celebration that joined Brittany Barbier and Vincent Clark. Full Catholic Mass at St. Louis Cathedral? Check. A cool beverage in a personalized Koozie as guests exited onto Jackson Square? Got it. A wedding program turned second line handkerchief for a joyous parade featuring the bride and groom and led by the Crescent City Soul Brass Band? Of course. There’s even more, but we’ll get to that later. Theirs was a love years in the making. They were 11 years old when they met at St. Rosalie Middle School. They were fast friends and stayed that way while attending different high schools and colleges. “Distance never changed the foundation of our relationship,” Brittany says. “We always made time to talk and to see one another to maintain what was most important to us: our friendship.” But it was just that: A friendship. Although each had admitted to having romantic feelings for the other over the years, the timing was never right and there’d been some hurt feelings along the way. Then, towards the end of their college years, Vinny asked Brittany to join him at a friend’s birthday party. She went, curious to see if this would be the night they took their relationship to another level. It was.

“We were both extremely nervous because we were such great friends and neither one of us wanted to lose our best friend,” Brittany says. “But we never looked back after that day!” Five years later, the couple were living in Luling. On a seemingly routine and scheduled date night, Vinny suggested they drive by St. Rosalie, where they’d first met. He parked in front the church where they’d both once attended weekly services. He walked around to the passenger side of the car, opened the door and took Brittany’s hand. He pulled a ring from his pocket. “I was trembling as he bent down on one knee and asked if I would be his best friend for life,” Brittany says. “It was the most special and romantic way to be proposed to.” They married on Sept. 16, 2017, exactly six years after that fateful party when they’d moved beyond friendship. After the evening ceremony at St. Louis Cathedral, they and their 180 guests danced a second line to The Jaxson, located in the former Jax Brewery Building. They shared traditional dishes – Eggplant Napoleon, chicken and andouille gumbo, muffalettas – in that landmark setting. “When I think back to the wedding, there is not one detail that I would change,” Brittany says. “I felt that our wedding perfectly described us as a couple and our love for each other.”

Courtney Harper & Adam Turkington NOVEMBER 4, 2017

PHOTOGRAPHER: Eau Claire Photographics | WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio

COURTNEY HARPER HAD JUST FINISHED HER first year of law school when boyfriend Adam Turkington made detailed plans for them to take their two miniature dachshunds to Audubon Park the following weekend. He was very specific about which day and at what time this stroll would occur. “That probably should have alerted me that he had something up his sleeve,” Courtney says. “I’m usually the one scheduling things down to the second.” On what seemed to be the hottest day of the year, the couple took their beloved dogs, Olive and Gus, to the park. Adam proposed near the amphitheater. “In true New Orleans fashion, he asked me to marry him as D.J. Jubilee’s “Get Ready, Ready” played in the background from a nearby party,” Courtney says. “It was wonderful and hilarious – exactly like our relationship.” The pair exchanged vows before 160 guests at the Audubon Clubhouse on Nov. 4, 2017. One of Courtney’s favorite parts of the wedding was when the officiant – family friend Andy LeBlanc—told the couple to “repeat after me.” “Adam whispered, ‘Repeat after me,’” she says. “Our wedding day was very us and it was very special.” Having Andy officiate also meant a lot to the couple: Just six months earlier, Andy and his wife, Jill, lost their four-year-old daughter, Molly Mae, to

104 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

complications following liver and kidney transplant surgery. Because of that devastating loss, Adam and Courtney hesitated before asking Andy to play an active role in their celebration. “Adam and I really wanted to have someone marry us who knew us very well and who embodied faith, strength and love,” Courtney says, “but we weren’t sure it would be too much to ask of him.“ Then Andy shared a dream he’d had about giving a speech at Courtney and Adam’s wedding. Misgivings gone, the couple asked Andy to lead their ceremony. They also made their wedding day a tribute to their friends’ child: the groomsmen wore green bracelets with #BLMM (Be Like Molly Mae). Green was Molly Mae’s favorite color. The speeches during their wedding weekend had a common theme: These two are the real deal. Best man Mikey Dessauer described the couple as being in their “own little love bubble.” Andy noted that the pair are always together, joking, “We get it! You love each other!” “Every moment of our wedding day was our favorite,” Courtney says. “Every detail was absolutely perfect.”

Kathryn Hastings & Howie Acosta, Jr. NOVEMBER 18, 2017

PHOTOGRAPHER: Eau Claire Photographics | WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio

HOWIE ACOSTA JR. IS A U.S. NAVY LIEUTENANT (junior grade) and pilots the MH-53E “Sea Dragon” helicopter. Yet he somehow convinced Tulane University classmate Kathryn Hastings that he was the type of guy who routinely forgot to bring pens to their shared Roman History class, forcing him to ask her for extra writing instruments. “I thought she was cute and it was an attempt to get to know her,” Howie says. “I did this most of the semester; my notes ended up being written in about 10 different colors because sometimes she didn’t have extra pens, but colored markers, pencils or even highlighters. She thought it was funny and I quickly developed a crush on her.” But Kathryn was taken, at least until the following school year. Learning his dream girl was single, Howie asked her on a date he hoped would be the first of many. He borrowed a Nintendo 64 because Kathryn had said she’d once loved playing Mario Kart, bought some wine and tuned his violin because “that was going to be my main move.” That night, they played games, talked and laughed. Midway through that bottle of wine, Howie played and sang Old Crow Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel” for Kathryn.

110 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

“I’m pretty sure she fell in love with me right there,” Howie says. “It’s hard to say when the moment was that we knew we had found ‘the one,’ because we had already known each other for a year and become really close friends before we got together.” In 2014, Howie finished his Master’s degree and Kathryn finished her undergraduate year and began her first year at Tulane Law. He proposed on her law school graduation day. On Nov. 18, 2017, the pair, now split between Texas and Virginia, married at historic Christ Church Cathedral in New Orleans in a ceremony officiated by Kathryn’s family priest from Dallas. A reception for 120 of their nearest and dearest followed at the French Quarter’s Marché. The newlyweds entered to a traditional sword arch formed by a handful of Howie’s Navy. Guests left with a watercolor of a streetcar sketched by Howie’s father and painted as gifts by his father, mother and mother-in-law. “The iconography of the street car will always be a part of New Orleans,” Howie says. “Now our family and friends have something that not only will remind them of us and our wedding, but of New Orleans itself.”

Engaging Photos Say YES to the engagement session. Written by Theresa Matherne, Theresa Elizabeth Photography

THE ENGAGEMENT SESSION ORIGINALLY STARTED AS A WAY to announce your engagement to your family, friends and community. The most common form of this was placing a photograph from your engagement session in the newspaper to spread the exciting news. Fast forward to 2018 and this has incredibly changed. With the help of technology and social media, many couples now can share their engagement instantly with their entire network with just a press of a few buttons. While this is insanely cool, scheduling a professional engagement session with your wedding photographer is seriously needed. HERE ARE MY TOP REASONS WHY: PRESERVE THE FIANCÉ(E) STATUS! Sounds pretty obvious, right? But as time inches closer to the big day, you start to find yourself getting busier and busier, with less time to just relax and enjoy your engagement. This is why, early in the engagement is the perfect time for an engagement session. It allows you to preserve the excitement of the proposal and that cloud nine feeling you get every time you get to finally say that word... fiancé. While the visions of the future are still fresh in your mind, that emotion will be clearly evident in your engagement session photographs. The actual engagement is a pivotal moment on your journey to marriage, and should be documented just as much as your wedding day! PRACTICE FOR THE BIG DAY The majority of newly engaged couples have not had photographs taken by a professional before, so it is important to use the engagement session as a way to open up and be comfortable in front 112 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

of the camera. On your wedding day you’ll likely be surrounded by a variety of cameras. The engagement session is a great opportunity to instill confidence and build comfort in front of the camera. In no time, you’ll stop focusing on the camera and more on each other, which is what this whole journey is about! Your interactions with each other will become more natural and less stiff. PRO TIP: If you want to really make it a true dry run, try coordinating your e-shoot with your hair and makeup trials; it will allow you the chance to see how your color palette and style will look in photos. THE PHOTOGRAPHS CAN BE USED THROUGHOUT YOUR ENTIRE WEDDING PROCESS! The photographs from your engagement session can be utilized in many ways for the actual wedding. Selecting an engagement photo for the save the dates is one of the most common

choices I see, but they can also be used as part of the signage, for your wedding website, place cards, for table markers, for reception fun (think large face cut outs for people to flood the dance floor with) and even as a unique guest book. LETTING YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER GET TO KNOW YOU AS A COUPLE Not only is an engagement session good practice for you, it’s also a great trial run for your photographer. It allows them to see how you interact; to learn if you are timid or big on the PDA. They will learn about your personalities, whether you are goofy or serious, and how much direction you’ll need or want. PRO TIP: you will likely see your photographer more than anyone else on your wedding day … including your fiancé! Engagement sessions

are a perfect icebreaker to transform your photographer from a ‘stranger’ taking your photos to a ‘friend’ taking your photos. Establish a relationship with your photographer (and all your vendors for that matter). Get to know their personality and hobbies to the point where you feel comfortable enough with them that you’ll look forward to spending time with them on your wedding day. A CHANCE TO LET LOOSE AND GET CREATIVE WITH EACH OTHER You have an opportunity to take some truly unique photos during an engagement session, different from any you might have had before, so make good use of it! Start with the location and pick a place that means something to both of you. It can be where you got engaged, a first date or just a

very memorable date, where you met (maybe your high school/university). It can be any place that puts you at ease, something familiar to you both that will spark some amazing memories to get you comfortable. Wherever you decide, make it mean something to you. PRO TIP: If there is an aspect of your wedding day you had to compromise on, (maybe your ideal vision was an outdoor wedding but tradition is pushing you in a more formal direction, like a church) you can use an engagement shoot to experience part of the aesthetic you won’t be able to feature at the actual wedding.

Now get to planning and enjoy every minute of the experience!

Brandi Fortuné & Michael Bordenave NOVEMBER 11, 2017

PHOTOGRAPHER: Ashford-Halley Studios | WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio

FOR BRANDI FORTUNÉ AND MICHAEL BORDENAVE, there’s always been something about the numbers 11-11. Whenever one of them sees that combination – be it on a clock, a license plate, a phone number or an address – he or she immediately wishes for happiness and success. “Call it superstition, but it seems like we always see that number,” Brandi says. It could be superstition, or it could be something greater at work. Because something kept throwing the two together over the years despite multiple false starts. They first dated in high school. (She attended Xavier Prep, he graduated from McDonough 35.) Michael says he knew Brandi was extraordinary even then – “I believe in love at first sight” -- but they parted ways to attend colleges in different states. A few years later, both were pursuing music careers. They bumped into each other at an Atlanta hip-hop showcase. They picked up like they’d never been apart, made promises to keep in touch – and then didn’t. There were other encounters and another three years passed. In 2008, they ran into each other at a New Orleans nightclub, but both dating other people. Michael remembers telling his cousin that night that Brandi was the one who got away. “Every so often it felt as it the universe would stop and bring us together,” Michael says. Brandi did get away, for about seven more years. Then in November

114 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

2015, both were living and working in New Orleans. He asked her out on a date. “She was honestly scared, but I was patient,” Michael says. “It was a whirlwind. We fell in love.” On a Wednesday afternoon about a year later, Brandi went to Michael’s house. “She looked stunningly beautiful in her sweatpants, t-shirt, and flip flops,” Michael remembers. He asked. She accepted, confirming, he says, “what I had felt all along: that we were made for each other. From puppy love to distant friends to best friends then ultimately inseparable.” They married on November 11, 2017 -- 11/11, of course – at the New Orleans Museum of Art, exchanging personalized vows in a ceremony space lit with purple, red and blue lights “to bring the night sky inside so we can be united under the heavens with God as our witness among family and friends,” Brandi says. They looked heavenward again during the outdoor cocktail hour, when fireworks were launched in their honor. During the reception, Brandi pulled out a guitar – a gift from Michael two years earlier – and played the couple’s favorite song, “Say You Won’t Let Go” by James Arthur. “We danced, we ate, we laughed, and cried tears of joy,” Brandi says. “That’s what you call a wedding and that’s how you start your fairy tale.”

Photography Q & A

Do I receive a disk or thumb drive of images from my wedding with my package and can I purchase one if not? While receiving digital copies should not be a deal-breaker if you love the photographer’s work, it is something to consider. Also, if you get image files, ask if you will be able to print images and ask if the files will be “high resolution.”

Written by Sofie LeChat

KNOWING WHAT QUESTIONS TO ASK AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, WHY YOU’RE ASKING THEM is crucial when choosing your wedding photographer. Here is a list of questions and their answers to help guide you in the process.

How long have you specialized in wedding photography? The dynamics and stress level that come with photographing a wedding are vastly different from those associated with other types of photography like portraiture or commercial photography. Just because someone is a photographer does not make them a wedding photographer. You want someone who knows what to expect and how to handle 118 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

the last minute insanity that occurs with every wedding and not lose their cool or fail to get the shot. Do you offer packages, and if yes, what is included? It is important that you know exactly what you are getting for your money. When you book the photographer make sure that whatever you have discussed is written in the contract. This way everything is crystal

How much is your retainer fee? When are payments expected and when is the final balance due? What is your cancellation policy? Professional photographers require a retainer fee to reserve your date. This can be a set fee or a percentage of the package you choose. Whichever it is, know that this is likely non-refundable. The reason is that photographers can only book one event at a time and have only 52 weekends a year when they can book weddings. Once they reserve your date, they turn away all other inquiries and if you cancel, they’ve lost not only your business, but all the other clients they turned away. Most photographers require that the balance be paid in full prior to the wedding. This is a common practice. If you find yourself worried about paying in full before the wedding, ask for several references and call them! Do you shoot alone or with a second photographer? Do you have an assistant? There is really no wrong answer here, but the answer you get will give you some insight. While an assistant isn’t an absolute necessity, they do make it easier for the photographer to focus on what they’re doing (capturing your wedding). Oftentimes, photographers will have a second shooter that

doubles as an assistant. This means that the second photographer helps with logistics and allows the main photographer to focus on your wedding while getting additional angles and shots for you. The main photographer can only be in one place at one place at one time, so a second photographer can be well worth the investment. How many photographs do you take? It is important to know what to expect. “Unlimited” coverage may mean a few hundred photos to one photographer and thousands of photos to another photographer. Make sure you and your photographer are on the same page! Do you edit your images before we see them? What kind of editing do you do? Some photographers minimally process your images (this often means you get them faster) and others will intricately

adjust each image. Be aware that the latter usually comes with a higher price tag. Find out what your photographer does and what to expect when you receive your photos. Be aware though that most photographers will not do major retouching like slimming people down and retouching acne on your proofs and that this kind of retouching is usually done at an extra fee. How long does it take to receive my photos after the wedding? The answer varies from photographer to photographer, but they should be able to tell you a general time frame before you book. Whether it’s 1-2 weeks or 6-8 months, there is no correct answer; there is only what you are comfortable with. Know up front what to expect, get it in writing, and as a final note of advice, don’t expect your photos to be done any

faster than what the photographer quoted you. You may be pleasantly surprised by an early date for delivery, but most photographers know how long it takes them to finish their work and usually need all of that time! Will you be the person taking the pictures? Yes, it happens. Brides have booked with one photographer based on their work only to have a totally different person show up on the wedding day. Ask up front and write it in on your contract if you are concerned. Ask these questions when you interview photographers and write down their answers. It’s important that you feel completely comfortable with the person documenting your wedding so that you get the best possible experience.

Twila Beasley & Chris McGee OCTOBER 9, 2017

PHOTOGRAPHER: Hi Volt Studios | WRITTEN BY: Natalie Pompilio

AS SHAKESPEARE SAID, “THE COURSE OF TRUE LOVE never did run smooth.” But if two people are truly in love – like Twila Beasley-McGee and Chris McGee -- they not only survive those challenges but thrive. Chris and Twila met at New Orleans’ Xavier Prep High School. Their bond was immediate and they were inseparable for three years – until Hurricane Katrina. Twila moved to Arkansas. Chris stayed behind. They spent senior year apart, keeping in touch via phone and MySpace, reuniting as freshmen at the University of Arkansas. Then another major setback: Chris suffered a brain aneurysm. If she survived, she could be permanently changed, perhaps cognitively and definitely physically. Twila learned doctors had amputated Chris’ right hand and multiple toes during a video call. “She was kind of nervous, but I just started crying because I felt myself fall in love with her all over again,” Twila says. “Her amputations didn’t bother me.” Chris was determined to return to college – “She’s a nerd who loves research,” Twila jokes – and Twila was determined to help her. Twila put her own education on hold and opened a pet care business with flexible hours. That allowed her to support the couple while attending Chris’s classes.

120 | N.O.W | theNOWBride.com

“I never felt like it was difficult or a burden,” Twila says. “I’m not the hero here. I may have taken the notes, but she did all the studying, research and stayed up late typing papers.” In May 2016, Chris graduated from Our Lady of Holy Cross College with a degree in legal studies. “Words can’t express how proud and happy I felt to see her walk across the stage on graduation day after witnessing her being given Last Rites at the hospital,” Twila says. On Oct. 9, 2017, thanks the Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage decision, Chris and Twila made their bond legal as well as emotional, marrying at The Crossing in Kenner. Wish Upon a Wedding, a non-profit that helps couples afford weddings after life-altering situations, helped pay for the event. They had a masquerade theme, an homage to New Orleans and a reference to how their courtship began. “We originally had to hide our relationship – we had to wear masks – knowing that we weren’t going to be accepted right away,” Twila says. “But we knew that as some point we could remove those masks and reveal who we are.” They are two people, deeply in love.

A Bachelorette Experience A Trashy Diva Lingerie Party CALLING ALL BRIDESMAIDS! PLANNING A BACHELORETTE PARTY FOR YOUR favorite bride-to-be just got so much easier. If a lingerie themed event is in the cards, why not take your bride and the party right to the source?

From bustiers to burlesque, Trashy Diva offers the ultimate bachelorette party experience. Not only will the bachelorette of honor be able to get fitted for her big day, she’ll also find the right pieces (and novelty items) to heat things up for the honeymoon. At before and after-hours shopping events, the entire boutique is available for an intimate, private shopping experience, complete with trained stylist. They’ll even curate a collection of lingerie options based on the bride’s personal sizes and preferences. BUT THERE’S MORE! “While interacting with real brides shopping at Trashy Diva boutiques, we quickly understood the need to give brides the opportunity to check of their to-do lists while letting loose with their favorite girls in an intimate setting,” shares Candice Gwinn, Trashy Diva owner and designer. “We married our favorite parts of lingerie showers and bachelorette parties to create party packages for real brides.” These parties include private shopping experiences, one-on-one

attention from a trained stylist, complimentary champagne or wine, and they even offer an option for a 30-minute introductory class showcasing the basics of burlesque by a professional burlesque dancer! Trashy Diva also helps take the stress off the bride and her friends, relieving the oh-so-common giftgiving anxiety. Guests are able to purchase gift certificates before and during the event that the bride can use toward a gift she loves. No more stressing to find the perfect gift in the right size, color and style! And lets just talk about style, shall we? Trashy Diva sources lingerie from all over the world, often working oneon one with designers to create pieces unique to their brand. They also carry styles from more than 70 of the world’s most luxurious lingerie designers and have an expansive size range from “A” to “H” to even the occasional “J”. Now, how do you get the party started? Reach out at least 2-4 weeks in advance for all the details regarding booking a party. “We host parties at all three Trashy Diva

Lingerie locations: the French Quarter, Magazine Street and Atlanta, “ says Gwinn. “Party times are generally held before or after usual business hours in the morning or evening.” Standard packages are available, but customized events are also an option. When the party is booked, the bride will have the opportunity to submit her personal sizes and preferences that a Trashy Diva stylist will then use to select items from all boutiques just for the event. As bride Lauren sums it up, “Upon booking the party, Trashy Diva asked for my size, style, and color preferences. A beautiful assortment of pieces of various price points was personally selected for me from both locations based on these specifications. The group was also able to browse the entire store and I left the party with a new collection of lingerie and loungewear I love!” Contact: customerservice@trashydiva.com or visit online at trashydiva.com/parties for more details. theNOWBride.com | N.O.W | 123

THE BUCK STOPS HERE BEFORE YOU SAY “I DO,” you need ask “How Much?” Traditionally, the bride’s family carries the majority of the financial responsibility. But with the cost of weddings growing as well as the average age of couples increasing, many couples are picking up some of the wedding expenses. Grooms’ families are also chipping in more than just the traditional rehearsal dinner and other small expenses. But no matter how the bill is divided, couples need to decide on a budget and stick with it.
