Restaurant & Shopping Guide 1

Hot Springs, Cool Wines, Warm Welcome ...and Dining & Shopping too! Calistoga is known for it’s Hot Springs, Cool Wines, & Warm Welcome, but we’ve also got some of the best Restaurants and Shopping in the Napa Valley. Located at the very top of Napa Valley, Calistoga is the destination town to leisurely explore artisan shops, discover world-class wines in our tasting 2

rooms and dine at one-of-a-kind restaurants. Visitors can also relax and rejuvenate in our renowned spas, wonderful book stores and cafes, and enjoy great music throughout the year, all in a small-town setting with a sophisticated yet friendly feel. Lodging choices range from elegant modern resorts to intimate bed and breakfast inns. Calistoga has something for everyone, and something for everyone on your gift list. Find yourself here, and you’ll find yourself coming back.

A Brief History of Calistoga Incorporated as a town in 1886, Calistoga was founded by Samuel Brannan, California’s first millionaire, who was fascinated by Calistoga’s natural hot springs and purchased 2000 acres to develop a spa reminiscent of Saratoga, New York. His resort opened to California’s rich and famous in 1862. With the completion of the railroad in 1868, Calistoga became not only a destination but the transportation hub for the upper Napa Valley. The town’s name comes from Brannan’s tipsy malapropism that he would make this the Saratoga of California, which came out as the “Calistoga of Sarafornia.”

The rider in this circa 1930 photograph is Roy Proctor. Roy owned the ice cream shop (currently the Pacifico Mexican restaurant) at the corner of Cedar Street and Lincoln Avenue from the 1920s to the 1950s. He loved to ride in parades and had that particular saddle made by a jeweler in Oakland. The saddle contained 25 pounds of silver and 3 pounds of gold.
