ART & ENTERTAINMENT

MOST MARVELOUS FESTIVAL OF THE ALPHA WORLD BRING IT ON THE GREATEST PULSATION

In India, THERE IS ONE OF THE MOST COLORFUL FESTIVALS OF THIS PLANET. KONARK DANCE & MUSIC FESTIVAL OF ORISSA INDIA IS A MUST SEE FESTIVAL IN ONE LIFE. IT IS A FESTIVAL OF CLASSICAL DANCES OF INDIA PERFORMED AT THE BACKDROP OF THE SUN TEMPLE, Konark. THE FESTIVAL STARTED IN THE YEAR 1986 AT KONARK NATYA MANDAP BY ITS FOUNDER-DIRECTOR PADMASHREE GURU GANGADHAR PRADHAN. IN A SENSE IT CAN BE CALLED THE HARBINGER OF THE CONTEMPORARY FESTIVALS OF ORISSA. THE SOLE AIM BEHIND THIS FESTIVAL IS TO BRING IN MANY ARTISTES INTO ITS CULTURAL FAMILY AND CREATING OF INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL AMITY AND BROTHERHOOD.

INDIAN WAY OF FESTIVAL

K

onark festival has established its own unique identity in the sense that eminent artistes of national and international repute participate and perform Odissi, Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Manipuri, Mohiniattam and other classical, folk & tribal dances/ music of India on the enchanting stage of the Natyashala in the monumental Sun Temple, Konark. The stage and the atmosphere are magnified by the spiritual and aesthetic flavor, in the natural ambience of casuarinas and ca-

shew trees. It is very easy to make it to Konark because this festival is held every year from 19th to 23rd February. In every year, Konark Festival is held in an open air auditorium with the temple as the backdrop, showcases a magical parade of India’s classical and traditional dance forms. Eminent dancers and their troupe delight visitors in the wintry evening of early December with dramatic choreographies.

28 JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012 1/13/12 8:46 AM

Besides, the dance performances you will be treated, in an Artist Camp, to an exhibition of Orissan temple sculptures which are often described as poetry transcribed on stone. Sand Art exhibition will be the another interesting attraction for visitors. Konark Festival was organised for the first time in 1989 in the Open Air Auditorium at Konark constructed with the financial assistance of Government of India. Conceived as a festival of Classical Dances of India, the objective of Konark Festival was to promote Konark as well as Odisha as place of tourist destination. To meet with this fabulous event, Konark is connected by excellent allweather roads with Puri 35kms and Bhubaneswar 65kms which are also nearest Railheads. If you wish to fly there the nearest airport is Biju Pattanaik Airport, Bhubaneswar. ODISSI : PART OF MARVELOUS FESTIVAL

The first clear picture of Odissi dance is found in the Manchapuri cave in Udayagiri which was carved during the time of Emperor Kharavela. Flanked by two queens, Emperor Kharavela was watching a dance recital where a damsel was performing a dance in front of the court along with the company of female instrumentalists. Thus, Odissi can be traced back to its origin as secular dance. Later it got attached with the temple culture of Orissa and presents in the great performance of Konark Dance and Music Festival. Dan finds us our porters and packs all our stuff we are ready for Phakding . Our walk today is not as tough as I thought probably because we are walking down, and the weather is not too cold. Along the way, we get to see the locals’ lifestyle and the beautiful landscape of Himalayas. Please note that the Nepali, especially those who live up on the mountain, are not too happy with you snap a picture of them . So I’m always careful with all photo shooting I make. On the way to the most hieght of the world The Himalayas or “Sagarmatha”in Nepali meaning “the head if the sky”. It is also widely known as the Everest. Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park is the highest national park in the world, with the entire park located above 3,000 m (9,700 ft). This park has three peaks which all higher than 8,000 meters, including Mt Everest. Therefore, most of the park area is very rugged and steep, with its terrain cut by deep rivers and glaciers. Unlike other parks in the plain areas, this park can be divided into four climate zones because of the rising altitude. The climatic zones include a forested lower zone, a zone of alpine scrub,

the upper alpine zone which includes upper limit of vegetation growth, and the Arctic zone where no plants can grow. The types of plants and animals that are found in the park depend on the altitude.

“Everest” was named by Andrew Scott Waugh after Sir George Everest is claimed to be 8,848 m. high. For years since Everest has been ascended successfully by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953, climbers at all levels dream to conquer the Everest.

Waking up the next morning, it’s my turn to suffer with the altitude sickness. I order garlic soup and take some medicine, they help but Dan suggests that we should take one more day to get ourselves ready. I got a little disappointed. Many people may wonder why we are here at the first place when we already know that this is not going to be an easy thing to do. I can’t really answer them. I’m here because I want to ,and if you ask travelers or climbers, they may say the same thing. And because I am here in Nepal, at a point that Everest is not far out of my reach. I make a vow to fulfill my dream by making it to the top. For me, there’s nothing can stop me. So the next day I start the greatest adventure of mine. It takes me much longer than I think. However now I already make it to the top of it all!Bravo!

The famous Nepalese cuisine are GundrookDheedo (a sugar-free dish made of wheat, maize and dried green vegetable), Alu Tama (Potato Bamboo Shoots), Vegetable Pulao (Fried Nepali Rice), Masu (spiced or curried meat), Vegetable Thukpa (Egg Noodles), and Chatamari (a flat bread made from rice flour with or without toppings). The souvenirs of Nepal that really famous are Tibetan carpets, beaded jewelry, prayer wheels, and painted masks. Bargaining is expected in Kathmandu. Nepal is very place to go and look around all shopping places. The sights, sounds, and smells of KathTRADITIONAL DRINKS THAT YOU SHOULDN’T MISS ARE

Tongba which is homemade wine. Fermented millet seeds are put in a wooden or plastic mug which is filled with hot water. One sips through a bamboo straw as more hot water is added which makes Tongba go down easily with greater impact and taste. Many consume this drink during winter season, and it is also a favorite drink among the tourists. Rakshi which is a millet-based distilled alcoholic drink. It is traditionally an important requirement at a lot of religious rituals and social events, perhaps because it is not only an alcoholic drink but also because of its antiseptic qualities. It is a strong drink, and is often brewed at home.

Nepal’s food IS AS DIVERSE AS THE COUNTRY. ALL OF THE NEPALESE RECIPES ARE QUICK TO COOK AND GOOD TO EAT. NEPALESE FOOD IS FAMOUS FOR ITS NUTRITION LEVEL AND TEMPTING TASTE. Shopping

You will see shops that virtually explode with the colors of fabric, jewelry, Thangka paintings, rugs, and masks, not to mention hiking and trekking gear of all descriptions. DON’T

miss

BARGAINING WHEN SHOPPING IN A NEPAL MARKETPLACE

Just like in many developing countries, bargaining is expected. It is part of the culture, except in a few higher end fixed-price shops geared to upscale tourists. As usual, newcomers should proceed slowly. Check with other travelers and shops about the prices for various items. A knowledgeable local can help, but the information may be tainted by the promise of a commission. Whoever has been living in Nepal may also be able to suggest good shops or a range of prices.

FIRSTLY WE HAVE TO FLY TO PARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. WE ARE GREETED BY OUR PERSONAL TOUR GUIDE, MARK. HIS NAME IS NOT THE REAL NAME, BUT HIS BHUTANESE NAME IS HARD TO PRONOUNCE AND REMEMBER,

we agree on Mark. Mark takes me to my hotel which is former palace but still beautiful in its way.

There is one Bhutanese word, “Dzong” which refers to a distinctive type of fortress, nowadays Dzong are occupied for government use. One my first day of exploring Bhutan, Mark takes me to Drukgyel Dzong which was on fired and has not yet renovated, so it is in a poor condition. However, it is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Bhutan because from there, you can see Mohari Mountain, a sacred mountain (7.314 meter high). NOW TRAVEL ASIA

On my third day, Mark takes us to a monastery called the “Tiger’s Nest” located on the side of a sheer cliff. Mark arranges a pony for me. The pony ride takes us 45 minutes to the

view point. We take a short break before we have to walk. Then my thought has fooled me. Climbing at 3,000 meter with small amount of oxygen in the air can be one tough task. Well, we finally make it halfway. After snapping loads of pictures, Mark suggests that we should get back before the sun goes down. Next day, Mark and I cruise around in Thimphu. Mark tells me that Thimphu has changed quite a bit when compared from six years ago. This is probably because Bhutan has more connected with the world by TV and internet. Then, we are at the Changangkha Lhakhang which is a monastery. What excites me here is a Buddha statue sitting inside. Mark teaches me to show respect to the statue in Bhutanese way. It’s really impressive to me

The next morning I’m off from Thimphu and head to Bumthang Valley. The distance is 269 kilometers long and possibly takes us 8 hours. So we decide to spend a night in a famous valley as “the summer nest of black-neck cranes.” We reach Valley at around 5 in the afternoon and check in at a hotel in a small village, Tanggay where there is no access to electricity or telephone. But the best part of staying here it’s the home of the black-neck cranes. Many bird watchers like to come for the cranes that can be seen only in few parts of the world. The locals believe that the arrival of the black-neck cranes brings luck and fertilize the area. When it’s time to leave Bumthang, I hardly say goodbye the initial destination. The royal wedding of the king of the admirable Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Jetsun Pema a commoner who became Queen Jetsun Pema. The ceremony took place on 13 October 2011 at the Punakha Dzong means palace of bliss in Punakha, Bhutan The wedding featured traditional Bhutanese attire. The bride, Jetsun Pema, had ordered several elaborate Kiras, the national dress for Bhutanese women, from among prominent weavers in the country. Pema chose one of these Kiras which are woven from raw silk and can take months to complete, as her wedding gown. She wore a light yellow Tego and a Kira colored red, yellow, green and white, along with red earrings to match her red Wonju.

The King wore a rose patterned yellow silk Gho, the very same Gho his father and grandfather had worn at their weddings.

BHUTAN‘S ROYAL WEDDING The royal couple was married by Bhutan's top Buddhist cleric at the country's most sacred monastery fortress in the old capital of Punakha at an auspicious time determined by astrologers. DURING THE HOURS OF CEREMONIES, THE 31-YEAR-OLD KING, JIGME KHESAR NAMGYAL WANGCHUCK, WAS ADORNED WITH ROYAL SCARVES. HIS BRIDE, 21-YEAR-OLD JETSUN PEMA, PRESENTED HIM A CHALICE FILLED WITH THE AMBROSIA OF ETERNA LIFE THAT HE DRANK, AND HE PLACED A CROWN UPON THE NEW QUEEN’S HEAD. IT’S HARD TO OVERSTATE THE EXCITEMENT THAT’S GRIPPED THE MOUNTAIN KINGDOM SINCE IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT OXFORD GRADUATE KING JIGME KHESAR NAMGYEL WANGCHUCK AND COMMONER JETSUN PEMA WOULD WED. Chendebji Chorten, the only one a Nepalese style stupa in Bhutan located on the top of Black Mountain. Finally, we make it to Bumthang. It is the most historic village, and ancient temples and sacred sites are counted the most here. Bumthang consists of 4 valleys, and the biggest one is where I am going to stay at tonight. My next destination is Jakar. It is known as the most beautiful valley in Bhutan. Jakar is a town in the central-eastern region of Bhutan. It is the district capital of Bumthang District and the location of Jakar Dzong, the regional dzong fortress. The name Jakar roughly translates as “white bird” in reference to its foundation myth, according to which a roosting white bird signaled the proper and auspicious location to found a monastery around 1549. Then, the following day we have to walk to Nga Lhakhang monastery where the famous mark dance festival is held annually. It is one of Bhutan’s most famous festival. All the villagers are all dressed up in the national costume, there are also outfits made specifically for this event. Everyone gets excited to joy this lively festival. The next morning we go on the car back to Thimphu, and we start off the following day with Chimi Lhakhang monastery, a very popular and revered temple. It is wellconsidered to be a temple of fertility. You will see couples coming here praying to have a baby. We reach Thimphu late afternoon. That night, I was invited for dinner with Mark’s older brother and his wife. My dinner with them is so good and also the way they treat me is permanently stay in my memory.

I wish my journey in Bhutan would never end, Marks says that I can come back to Bhutan anytime I want, and “Bhutan will always wait for me. I’m absolutely sure that I will make a trip back to the land of my dream again. NOW TRAVEL ASIA

AS ONE OF ASIA’S HIDDEN TREASURES, SIKKIM IS LONG TIME ON MY MUST-GO LISTS. I START MY JOURNEY BY TAKING KINGFISHER AIRLINE, A LOW-COST AIRLINE FROM INDIA THAT LANDED IN KOLKATA. MY FIRST GRASP OF KOLKATA IS THE COLD WEATHER OF JANUARY. KOLKATA AIRPORT IS ABOUT 1 HOUR BY CAR FROM THE CITY. WITH TRAFFIC, IT TAKES ME QUITE SOMETIMES TO GET TO THE HOTEL. To get to know this city better, I spend one day in Kolkata. The next morning, I take a taxi for city tour. There are 2 types of taxi here. The first one is similar to Tuk-Tuk in Thailand called “Rickshaw”, it can seat only 2 passengers. The other kind is like taxi meter. It looks like an ancient car which attracts me. I found out that this kind of taxi can be found only in Kolkata. I follow the map and take myself for a walk to the flower market. The friendliness of people makes the flowers even livelier. People come to this market to buy flowers for Hindu Gods’ worshipping and ceremony. I cruise around the market and come across a tea shop. Why don’t give it a try? Tea with milk is called “Chai” and costs only 2 Rupee. At first sip, I can smell the goat milk, it smells better than I ever imagined, and the warm cup of tea tasted so good in this cold winter. From the fresh flower market, I walk along the Ganges River. Not only the breath-taking viewpoint, but you can also observe people’s daily lifestyles that connect very tightly with the river. One ritual that reflects an inseparable relationship between the lives and the river is Makar Sankranti. It is a ritual NOW TRAVEL ASIA

when people bath in Ganges River. They believe that the water brings happiness and can purify them. The ritual runs for 3 days and about over 200,000 people would go bath in the river to set their spirits free. Then, I take a taxi to Victoria Memorial Hall, a big white building built by marble. It was used by the British during the colonial time hundreds of years ago. The Victoria Memorial Hall is a memorial building dedicated to Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom and Empress of India, located in Kolkata because Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal and a former capital of British India. The hall currently serves as a museum and a tourist attraction. It is an autonomous organization within the Government of India's Ministry of Culture. The massive Victoria Memorial stands enclosed within 64 acres (260,000 m2) of blooming gardens. It houses a museum containing a large collection of memorabilia relating to Queen Victoria and the British presence in India as well as other exhibits. The Memorial also contains a Royal Gallery housing a number of portraits of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and paintings illustrating their lives. After India gained independence in the year 1947, certain additions were made to the Victoria Memorial. These additions formed National Leader's Gallery, containing the portraits and relics relating to Indian independence.

TIBET’S INFLUENCE IN SIKKIM The next morning, I take a plane to Bagdogra, the flight took about one and a half hour. Then I rent a Jeep and get a driver to take me to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, the ride takes 4 hours. The ride is very exciting with all the road curves and the way my driver drives. The temperature at night in Gangtok was -2C, so getting outside is not a good idea for me. I stay at a 5-star hotel, The Nor-khill which used to serve as a guesthouse for Sikkim kings. Then, it was taken over and turned into a 5-star hotel. The interior gives a sense of luxury and glamorous, that makes me feel like I am in a place for a king. The furniture, carpet and almost everything inside are genuinely ancient.

Next morning, the friendly staff of hotel took me out to see the sunrise at the view point, Tashi Viewpoint where I can steal a look over the Himalayas and the Khanchendzonga Mountain which is 8,586 meters above sea level. People in Sikkim believe that on the top of Khanchendzonga, there is a living God who hide 5 priceless treasure; salt, jewels, medicines, holy textbook, and panoply. This is Very interesting indeed. After a fine breakfast at the hotel, I’m ready for my great discovery of Sikkim’s three great temples. The first temple is over 200 years old, Enchey Monastery which was established by Lama Druptob Karpo who left the

From Enchey Monaster, I take a 45 minutes ride to Rumtek Monastery, the biggest monastery in Gangtok. Sitting on the top of the mountain, Rumtek Monastery possesses a magnificent view, it also houses religious school where many Lama attend. Another temple is Zurmang Kagyud Monastery, Sikkim people believe that the head monk of this monastery, Zurmang Gharwang Rinpoche, has been reborn for the 12th time. My trip to the three monasteries is truly impressive with positive believes of beautiful people here.

Another day in Sikkim, I sip my coffee and look out the window. There is the stunning view outside. I realize how beautiful the flowers in Sikkim are. The “100 years old rose” or Rhododendron, the Asalea and over 500 kinds of wild orchids are probably Sikkim’s top flowers. So, today I decide to visit the flower garden, Saramsar Orchid Garden, and the Gangtok’s flower exhibition, Flower Garden Hall. The experience I get from both places is more than what I had expected. There are thousands of flowers send out sweet scent and show their charm. This place is a heavenly attraction.

On my last night in Sikkhim, I manage some times to go shopping. Most items here are in fixed price so I couldn’t do much of a bargain but I am really happy of all the things I got, especially the colored stones. Tibetans believe that different color of stones will bring good luck, especially Turquoise is believed to be the most powerful charm. I have just few days in Sikkim, but the happiness of being under the great shadow of Everest is permanently in my memory. NOW TRAVEL ASIA

ASIA’S HIDDEN TREASURE Leh Ladakh

A TRIP TO NATURE THE REAK HIDDEN PARADISE ON EARTH LEH LADAKH IS 3,500 METERS ABOVE SEA LEVEL. IT IS ONLY 200 METERS LESS IN HEIGHT THAN TIBET, “The Roof of the World”, AND BECAUSE LEH LADAKH HAS BEEN CULTURALLY INFLUENCED BY TIBET, IT’S CALLED “LITTLE TIBET”. FOR PEOPLE WHO SEEK FOR ADVENTURE, LEH LADAKH IS A “paradise on earth” FOR ITS UNSPOILED NATURE AND CULTURAL HERITAGE. EACH SEASON AND GEOGRAPHY THERE ARE SO DISTINCT THAT LIFESTYLES OF THE PEOPLE REFLEX THE UNIQUENESS OF LEH LADAKH. Right here it is the only 100%

Buddhist region left in India which is the country where Buddhism was originated with The Dalai Lama as a spiritual leader and the head of state.

LADAKH IS HIDDEN ITSELF BEHIND THE BEAUTY OF HIMALAYAS BETWEEN CHINA AND TIBET UNTIL INDIA PROMOTED IT AS A TOURIST ATTRACTION.

Because Ladakh was under Tibet’s control, it has been influenced by Tibet culture. Moreover, people in Ladakh tide themselves strongly to Tibet. At the land under Tibet’s shadow almost every shop and hotel have pictures of The Dalai Lama and the city of Lhasa which is Tibet’s capital city. The appearance of the people also looks like Tibetans. It can be easily mistake that Ladakh is part of Tibet despite the fact that it’s part of India.

There is one useful word when going to Ladakh is “Ju Lei”. It can mean many things; Hello, Thank you, Good bye, and can even be said in giving directions. I say this word over and over again during this trip. However, visiting Ladakh can be difficult for some people because of low percentage of O2, only 60%. There’s a high chance that some travelers will experience. High Altitude Sickness which

DALAI LAMA HIS HOLINESS THE 14TH DALAI LAMA, TENZIN GYATSO, IS THE SPIRITUAL LEADER OF TIBET. HE WAS BORN ON 6 JULY 1935, TO A FARMING FAMILY, IN A SMALL HAMLET LOCATED IN TAKTSER, AMDO, NORTHEASTERN TIBET. AT THE AGE OF TWO THE CHILD, WHO WAS NAMED LHAMO DHONDUP AT THAT TIME WAS RECOGNIZED AS THE REINCARNATION OF THE 13TH DALAI LAMA, THUBTEN GYATSO. THE DALAI LAMAS ARE BELIEVED TO BE MANIFESTATIONS OF AVALOKITESHVARA OR CHENREZIG, THE BODHISATTVA OF COMPASSION AND PATRON SAINT OF TIBET. BODHISATTVAS ARE ENLIGHTENED BEINGS WHO HAVE POSTPONED THEIR OWN NIRVANA AND CHOSEN TO TAKE REBIRTH IN ORDER TO SERVE HUMANITY. LEH LADAKH APPARENTLY PRESENTS TIBETAN CULTURE AND WAY OF LIFE. will lead to headache, nausea, and indigestion. These symptoms can be treated by a few hours sleep or days if it is really bad. Some suggestions of how to handle the sickness are taking a rest, drink a lot of water, move slowly, stop smoking and drinking alcohol. The best way to get recover in the short time is having hot soup. There are two ways of getting to Ladakh. One way is to fly from New Delhi to Ladakh. Another way is taking a bus from New Delhi to Ladakh. The second way is better for people who want to enjoy the view along the way. I prefer the bus better. You can see the way of life along the way as well. Even the bus takes longer time, but during the ride your body can slowly adapt to the small amount of O2. What worth the most is that you can see the world’s heritage and the culture where people have life style that is rarely change from what it’s been like long ago. It is just like you step to the door of natural way of life that might inspire you to get down to the earth and appreciate the way of nature.

SNAKE CHARMER THE PICTURE OF SNAKE CHARMER IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF LEH LADAKH.YOU MAY WONDER HOW DO THEY WORK WITH THE DANGEROUS POISON COBRA. AS FOR “CHARMING” SNAKES... COBRAS ARE USED BECAUSE THEY VISUALLY TRACK MOVEMENT. ANY SNAKE THAT VISUALLY TRACKS MOVEMENT COULD BE USED. OTHER SNAKES TRACK SMELL AND/OR HEAT. SO IN ORDER TO USE SOMETHING LIKE A RATTLESNAKE FOR EXAMPLE YOU’D NEED TO HAVE A HEAT SOURCE THAT YOU WAVE AROUND IN ITS FACE.

Basically it’s all about the movement and nothing to do with the music.

TALE OF

LEH LADAKH Medicine of Ladakh Leh Ladakh India

TIBETAN MEDICINE HAS BEEN THE TRADITIONAL HEALTH SYSTEM OF LADAKH FOR LONGER THAN A THOUSAND YEARS. THIS SCHOOL OF TRADITIONAL HEALING CONTAINS ELEMENTS OF AYURVEDA AND CHINESE MEDICINE, COMBINED WITH THE PHILOSOPHY AND COSMOLOGY OF TIBETAN BUDDHISM. FOR CENTURIES, THE ONLY MEDICAL SYSTEM WHICH WAS ACCESSIBLE TO THE PEOPLE HAS BEEN THE AMCHI WHO ARE TRADITIONAL DOCTORS FOLLOWING THE TIBETAN MEDICAL TRADITION. NOW A DAY AMCHI MEDICINE IS STILL AN IMPORTANT COMPONENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH, ESPECIALLY IN REMOTE AREAS.

What to eat General info LADAKH IS A HIDDEN TREASURE OF ASIA IN THE REGION OF JAMMU AND KASHMIR, THE NORTHERNMOST STATE OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDIA. IT LIES BETWEEN THE KUNLUN MOUNTAIN RANGE IN THE NORTH AND THE MAIN GREAT HIMALAYAS TO THE SOUTH, INHABITED BY PEOPLE OF INDO-ARYAN AND TIBETAN DESCENT. LADAKH IS ONE OF THE MOST SPARSELY POPULATED REGIONS IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR.

Climate YOU CAN EXPERIENCE HEAVY SNOWFALL IN SEVERAL MONTHS IN THE YEAR. SUMMERS ARE SHORT, THOUGH THEY ARE LONG ENOUGH TO GROW CROPS. THE SUMMER WEATHER IS DRY AND PLEASANT. TEMPERATURE RANGES ARE FROM 3 TO 35 °C IN SUMMER AND MINIMUMS RANGE FROM -20 TO -35 °C IN WINTER.

Ladakh’s Wedding

LADAKHI CUISINE IS ALMOST THE SAME AS TIBETAN CUISINE, THE MOST PROMINENT FOODS BEING THUKPA WHICH IS NOODLE SOUP AND TSAMPA, KNOWN IN LADAKHI AS NGAMPHE, ROASTED BARLEY FLOUR, EATABLE WITHOUT COOKING IT MAKES USEFUL, IF DULL TREKKING FOOD. A DISH THAT IS STRICTLY LADAKHI IS SKYU, A HEAVY PASTA DISH WITH ROOT VEGETABLES WHICH IS THE MUST EAT OF LADAKH.

Architecture of Leh Ladakh The architecture of Ladakh presents Tibetan and Indian influences and monastic architecture reflects a deeply Buddhist approach. The Buddhist wheel, along with two dragons, is a common feature on every gompa, including the likes of Lamayuru, Likir, Thikse, Hemis, Alchi and Ridzong Gompas. Many houses and monasteries are built on elevated, sunny sites facing south, and in the past were made of rocks, earth and wood but are now more often concrete frames filled in with stones or adobes.

Weddings in Ladakh are full of music, dance, merriment and feasting. The boys are generally promised or married at an age of 16 and girls by the age of 12. The relatives of the groom take ‘Chang’, tea, butter and other presents along with the ring to the bride’s home. If the gifts are accepted then marriage takes place a few months later. On the first day, a grand feast ensues at the bride’s house and on the second day, at the groom’s place. After marriage, bride lives with her husband and her parents offer clothes, animals and land to the couple as dowry or ‘Raqtqaq’, depending on their economic status.

MY FIRST STOP IS JONKER STREET. IT IS A MUST VISIT IN MALACCA AND ALSO AN ANCIENT DISTRICT THAT GETS QUITE CROWDED ESPECIALLY ON THE WEEKENDS. THE STREET IS FULL OF SHOPS, AND RESTAURANTS, BARS AND MANY OTHER CHILL-OUT PLACES WHAT SELL NOT ONLY FOOD, BUT YOU CAN FIND ALCOHOL, AND SNACKS. I SPEND THE TIME STROLLING ALONG JONKER STREET UNTIL LATE NIGHT. On my second day in Malacca, after late breakfast, I plan to the museum named The Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum. The museum opens from 10 A.M.-noon, and again from 2-5 P.M.. Since there is a little time before the museum opens, I decide to walk around the neighborhood. I walk pass an old Chinese temple named Cheng Hoon Teng, the oldest Chinese temple in Malaysia which is about 300 years old. Then I walk back to the museum, the admission fee is 8 RM, and allows 15 visitors to get in at a time. Taking picture is prohibited. The museum displays antiques that reflect the cultural blend of Chinese, Italy, Malaysia, England. As the majority of Malaysian is Muslim, I can't miss Malay and Islamic World Museum in Jalan Kota. It also currently houses a Museum of Torture, European medieval period for a limited duration on the ground floor. Masjid Kampung Hulu is other marvelous place from Muslim's influence. Built in 1728, it's one of the oldest functioning

mosques in Malacca together with Masjid Kampung Kling and Masjid Tengkera (Tranquerah), Jln Tengkera see the mixed architecture of Chinese, Javanese and Arab on the minarets and the roofs. Dutch Square or Red Square, the landmark of Malacca

Ayer Keroh is one attraction on my must visit in Malacca. It is established by Parameswara in the 1390’s, Malacca is Malaysia’s historical pride and joy. Under his rule, it thrived, emerging as a successful international port so esteemed that Portuguese writer Tome Pires once said ‘Whoever is Lord of Malacca has his hand on the throat of Venice’. This port lured Javanese, Indian, Arab and Chinese traders and soon caught the interest of expansionist Europeans. As time went on Malacca gained its freedom along with the rest of Malaysia and nowadays boasts beautiful architecture and good fare.

In the evening of my last day, I sit alone at the Dutch square but sometimes people call it "Red Square because" because all the surrounding building painted red, Christ Church is part of the Dutch Square. I come back just to have one last good memory and think about my great trip in Malacca. It’s just my first time. But I’m sure that , I will be back here again.

WONDERFUL WORLD

heritage SITE

Ayer Keroh is located on Malacca’s outskirts. It is a sleepy backwater with scanty activity options and is simply a visitor’s complex of hotels and trivial attractions. Although it has been publicised as a key Malaccan tourist site, since it is home to a hotchpotch of attractions such as the Malacca Zoo and the Butterfly & Reptile Sanctuary, this area is mostly rural. There’s not much dining, nightlife and shopping but the few parks here are must-see sightseeing attractions. NOW TRAVEL ASIA

HIGHLIGHTS OF

MALACCA

Interesting Historical Places in Malacca MALACCA IS FAMOUS FOR ITS HISTORICAL SITES, LET’S WALK AROUND ALL THESE INTERESTING HISTORICAL PLACES TO SEEK OUT THE VALUABLE TREASURE FROM ANCIENTS’ ARCHITECTURE AND THE STORIES BEHIND THE DOOR.

Melaka Sultanate palace Malaysia

MALACCA

General info MALACCA IS WELL KNOWN AS 'THE HISTORIC STATE OR NEGERI BERSEJARAH' AMONG LOCALS. IT IS THE THIRD SMALLEST MALAYSIAN STATE, AFTER PERLIS AND PENANG. MALACA LOCATED IN THE SOUTHERN REGION OF THE MALAY PENINSULA, ON THE STRAITS OF MALACCA. IT BORDERS NEGERI SEMBILAN TO THE NORTH AND THE STATE OF JOHOR TO THE SOUTH. THE CAPITAL IS MALACCA CITY, WHICH IS 148 KM SOUTH EAST OF MALAYSIA'S CAPITAL CITY KUALA LUMPUR, 235 KM NORTH WEST TO JOHOR'S LARGEST CITY JOHOR BAHRU AND 95 KM NORTH WEST TO JOHOR'S SECOND LARGEST CITY BATU PAHAT. THIS HISTORICAL CITY CENTRE HAS BEEN LISTED AS A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE SINCE 7 JULY 2008. ALTHOUGH IT WAS THE LOCATION OF ONE OF THE EARLIEST MALAY SULTANATES, THE MONARCHY WAS ABOLISHED WHEN THE PORTUGUESE CONQUERED IT IN 1511. THE YANG DI-PERTUA NEGERI OR GOVERNOR, RATHER THAN A SULTAN, ACTS AS THE HEAD OF STATE NOW. MALACCA IS ONE OF THE VERY INTERESTING HIDDEN TREASURE OF ASIA.

Climate MALACCA’S WEATHER IS HOT AND HUMID ALL YEAR LONG WITH RAINFALL, THE INTENSITY OF WHICH DEPENDS ON THE TIME OF THE YEAR. THE AVERAGE OF TEMPERATURES IS GENERALLY BETWEEN 30°C - 35°C DURING THE DAY AND 27°C - 29°C AT NIGHT. IT MAY GET COLDER DURING PERIODS OF HEAVY RAINFALL.

A replica of the Melaka Sultanate palace was reconstructed at the foot of St. Paul's Hill. The design is based on the description of the palace from the sixteenth-century 'Malay Annals,' or 'Sejarah Melayu.' It is the only building of its kind in Malaysia, and it provides a rare glimpse of the ancient Malay kingdom that once flourished here. The palace is now the Malacca Cultural Museum, which includes many artifacts of the past.

St. Paul's Church On top of St. Paul's Hill, there is the St. Paul's Church, once the prayer house of the Portuguese Catholics, then turned into burial ground for their noble dead by the Dutch. The tombstones have Latin and Portuguese inscriptions on them. St. Francis Xavier was buried there in 1553 before his body was moved to Goa in India.

Stadthuys The Stadthuys is the former official residence of the Dutch Governor. It is now the Historic Museum and Ethnography Museum which has many traditional bridal costumes and relics on display. Nearby, you will find the Christ Church built in 1753, another fine example of the Dutch architecture.

Memorial hall Memorial hall (1912), the landmark where the nation’s first prime minister announce proclamation of independence from the British empire. It has been preserved with archive pictures of the country’s struggle to attain independence.

Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum Baba and Nyonya Heritage Museum. ‘Straits Chinese’ or the Baba and Nyonya , are Chinese of noble descendants that have adopted much of the Malay culture into theirs. The public can now review the heirloom unique to this heritage at private museum run by the Babas and Nyonyas of Malacca. Floral and pictorial motifs grace parts of the front of the house whilst the interior is adorned with intricately carved fittings finished in gold leaf.

Hang Jebat and Hang Kasturi’s mausoleum Hang Jebat and Hang Kasturi’s mausoleum. Two of the Malacca Sultanate’s well-known warriors and champion of justice. Hang Jebat was unceremoniously killed by Hang Tuah in a duel of honour that lasted 3 days and 3 nights. He was killed in the name of justice to avenge the sultan’s hasty punishment against Hang Tuah for a crime he didn’t commit.

Maritime Museum Maritime Museum is constructed after ‘Flora De La Mar’, the Portuguese ship that sank off the Coast of Malacca on its way to Portugal. With its hull laden with invaluable treasures seized from Malacca, the ship was doomed from existence had it not for the efforts to Malacca’s heritage. At the museum, visitor can get a closer look at Malacca from the famed Malay Sultanate of the 14th century to the Portuguese era, the Dutch era and the British era. There are exhibits of foreign ships that had once called at the port of Malacca during the height of its maritime hegemony.

Portuguese Square Portuguese Square has a mild affinity to Portugal and known to be ‘Mini Lisbon’ in Malacca. Located within the Portuguese Settlement, the square is the culmination of Portuguese culture in its full splendour and colours. One will also find authentic Portuguese restaurants at the square. Some also offer bespoke services such as cruises along the historic Mekong River. Hospitality at these locations is first class and a testament to the superb guest services in Luang Prabang.

NEW LANDMARK COFFEE SHOP

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA

Each of the 5 pavilions behind the main residence was built using different materials such as brick, wood and cob (a mixture of clay and straw). The varied façades not only add character, but also place these inspiring pavillions in their historical context. Nineteenth Century French explorers in the upper Mekong region played a special role in the discovery and development of Luang Prabang. Each pavilion therefore bears the name of one of these adventurers and includes a small memorial garden housing a fine bronze statue.

Coffee Smith the new coffee shop has become an outstanding landmark of Garosugil. Coffee Smith's main attraction is the great atmosphere to sit and sip. Its large hall-like interior is divided into two floors. The 1st floor is for seating and the 2nd floor is for ordering and seating. Weather permitting, the outdoor terrace area and the 2nd floor seats that overlook Garosugil adds extra dimension to people watching, which might be the exactly why you're on Garosugil in the first place.

EASTERN & ORIENTAL EXPRESS

ORIENT-EXPRESS IS THE MOST FAMOUS FOR ITS LEGENDARY TRAIN.

The legend of the trail first came into being in 1883 as one of the world's most exciting and indulgent train journeys. TODAY THE EVOCATIVE NAME EMBRACES 50 ELITE TRAVEL COLLECTIONS IN 24 COUNTRIES, ACROSS FIVE CONTINENTS. THIS INCLUDES 41 HIGHLY ACCLAIMED HOTELS, EACH UNIQUE IN STYLE, FROM THE MOUNT NELSON IN CAPE TOWN AND RIO'S COPACABANA PALACE, TO THE GRAND HOTEL EUROPE IN ST. PETERSBURG AND MAROMA RESORT & SPA ON MEXICO'S RIVIERA MAYA; six luxury tourist

trains, two river cruise operations and '21', one of New York's most iconic restaurants.

Luxury train operator Orient-Express has appointed hospitality industry marketing specialist Marcos Pires as Director of Sales & Marketing. It is such a great day for NOW Travel Asia to meet with Mr.Pires in Bangkok, Thailand and talk about his career with the legendary train.

WHAT IS YOUR OUTSTANDING MISSION WITH E&O THAT MANY PEOPLE CAN SEE? Since my appointment in the later part of 2010, I have overseen one of the biggest launches for the Eastern & Oriental Express in its history: the launch of a series of new three and six night rail

I’m based in the Singapore Eastern & Oriental Express regional Sales & Marketing office. I am responsible for developing and consolidating business in Asia, focusing primarily on the Eastern & Oriental Express luxury train and the Road to Mandalay river cruiser.

BESIDE SALES AND MARKETING IN SOUTH EAST ASIA, IS THERE ANY OTHER ROLE WITH THE LUXURY TRAIN? My role also includes the company’s historic and exclusive train and cruise journeys in the UK and Europe, including the legendary Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Because Asia’s traveling needs more luxury, Pires will attract travelers’ attention and always make new change of Eastern & Oriental Express. As 2012 has arrived, his main focuses will be to develop digital marketing and customer relationship management in the region. We will surely see the achievement of Oriental Express as always.
