Khalid Bardan Emirates’ Manager, Thailand and Indochina

Since 1985, the Emirates airline business had been strived to be the best serviced airline. Today, NOW Travel Asia Magazine have a chance to talk with the man who represent for Emirates’ Airline in Thailand and Indochina, detail in every aspect and main point of Emirates’ global aim, revenue and his thoughts about

airline business and travel business in the South East Asia on the world that changed every day.

114 NOW TRAVEL ASIA JULY - AUGUST 2012

I have been working for Emirates Airline since 2005. I used to handle the commercial and sales aspects before moving on to oversee Cote D’Ivoire and followed by Thailand & Indochina, as the area manager. Working with Emirates Airline has certainly been an eye opener for me especially when I get assigned to countries like Thailand where interesting cultures and traditions really complete my overseas working experience. On the more serious note, working for such a premium airline with a world class reputation like Emirates gives me a constant pressure to keep myself on track and to perform to the best of my capacity. Moreover, representing Emirates Airline to me is representing Dubai, my own country, so this is another source of boost that keeps me focused and always thriving for nothing less than the best.

What are your responsibilities?

Being the Area Manager for Thailand and Indochina, I am overseeing operations within Thailand as well as Vietnam, which begins operations in early June 2012. I have been overseeing Vietnam in the build-up to launch day and am really excited about Vietnam being a new member of our South East Asian network. What are Emirates Airline’s global aims and policies for 2012-2014?

The most recent global activation has been “Hello Tomorrow” campaign which involves turning Emirates into a brand that consumers associate with ‘lifestyle’. We want to reach out to different groups of people with varying cultures, traditions and interests with us being the bridge that connects people’s hopes, dreams and aspirations. We are utilising integrated marketing communications including Facebook and Youtube to com-

municate with the young audience too. Emirates airline has grown from its early days in 1985, when it launched with just two aircraft, to its current status as one of the world’s fastest growing airlines with 171 widebody aircraft including the world’s largest fleet of Boeing 777s and A380s. We certainly look forward to continuing our strengths and maintaining our leader position in the industry. We strive to serve consumers with the best products and services at all times. Being known for innovations and technologies, we are also committed to be the first to entice our passengers with the most advanced developments. Also, our ever expanding network is definitely going to continuously widen even further as we would like people from as many countries and regions as possible to enjoy the exceptional flying experience with us.

“We look forward to continuing to work on our strengths and maintaining our position as industry leader, serving our consumers with the best possible service.” In airline business, how is Emirates doing in Thailand & South East Asia?

Based on Emirates’ 2011-2012 results, revenue generated from across Emirates’ six regions continues to be well balanced, with no region contributing more than 30 percent of overall revenues. In Thailand and South East Asia specifically, we have to compete against local or national airlines which are strong in terms of customer loyalty. However, we believe that Emirates’ products and services are of the standard that easily put us at the forefront

when consumers are deciding over a selection of luxury airlines. What are your thoughts on travel industry and airline business in Asia?

Emirates Airline, having a multicultural work force making up of more than 45,000 people from over 165 different nations, understands and is able to respond to the existing needs of each market. I see Asia as a region with a lot of potential to become one of the world’s leaders and I look forward to seeing where it is going to be in the next 5 years or so.

When was Dusit Thani established?

Dusit International was founded 64 years ago. Most people think it was founded with the first Dusit Thani in Bangkok, but actually our first property was the Princess on New Road – Dusit Thani Bangkok was actually the fourth.

Chanin Donavanik CEO, Dusit International

Under fast-changing traveler behavior and striving against the competition in Asia and worldwide, international hotel chains arethe first choice for travelers. Nowadays, international hotel chain brands are commonly found in top capital cities around the world, especially in Asia. NOW Travel Asia Magazine had a chance to talk with Mr. Chanin Donavanik, CEO of Dusit International, a leading Asian hotel chain, to update us on the business situation and his future plans.

116 NOW TRAVEL ASIA JULY - AUGUST 2012

Firstly, my mother believes in Thailand’s hotel industry and Thai service and hospitality, with which other nations cannot compare. A crucial time in the group’s evolution was the addition of its brands from just Princess to Princess and Dusit Thani. We chose to name our first hotel Princess because Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana presided over the opening ceremony. My mother, however, wanted to give Dusit Thani Bangkok a Thai name so as to compete on a unique level with other international hotels. In those days, there were no hotels in the Thai traditional style; my mother wanted to have the first. A problem of the last 40 years is that Thai people have developed a preference for foreign brands; she aimed to combat this by creating a hotel with a distinct Thai identity, something she had thought about previously for over 50 years. Many of Bangkok’s hotels have now lost their own authenticity.

“All Dusit Thani branches exhibit the essence of Thai tradition and the genial nature of the country’s inhabitants.” How long was it until Dusit Thani emerged in the international market?

Dusit International has expanded into the international market for almost 20 years. We worked alongside our partners on investments in America and the Philippines. After that, we owned Kempinski for a period of time the time of the Tom Yum Kung Crisis, Thai business crisis - one that shaped our business plans (my mother ignored her debts and denied the pressure she was under). We sold Kempinski for the benefit of the ongoing Dusit International investment, a group that has continued to increase in numbers for more than 30 years. Dusit Thani and Dusit Princess are relative beginners amongst a crowded market of foreign hotels scattered throughout the Thai provinces. In response, we chose to branch out into other countries. What difficulties did you encounter in the beginning?

We have definitely encountered some hard situations; initially, we were unfamiliar with the

norms of business operations and law in foreign countries. The experience of working in the business for such a long time has taught us what to do and what not to do – it’s important to have a consulting lawyer who is expert in a specific field.

Of late, how much has Dusit Thani grown in the international market?

What must you work on to make Dusit Thani successful in the international market?

I think this is just the start for Dusit International. It could take five more years to standardize a strong business.

What should Dusit Thani’s customers expect from a stay at one of its overseas branches?

How many subsidiary brands exist?

We have to develop staff both senior and novice. The employee who works with us for many decades knows the industry well, but can’t work abroad. Then, we need to push new modern staff who help our overseas branches to be successful.

All Dusit Thani branches around the world include the essence of Thai tradition and genial culture in the service. For the best in every aspect, when entering one of our hotels or resorts, guests meet our trained staff in Thai uniform, who offer the traditional Thai greeting (wai). Our expectation is to serve the guest with authentic Thai hospitality, but sometimes it is difficult. Even though our Thai staff in overseas branches only number 20-30%, overseas local staff are well trained in Thailand to fully absorb real Thai tradition.

Apart from Dusit Thani and Dusit Princess, we also have lifestyle brand dusitD2 and the soon to be launched Dusit Devarana. In which counties have you seen most success?

All of our overseas hotels have seen substantial success. In Thailand, however, political problems have stunted our growth. In Manila we are ranked third and in Dubai we are one of the top-ranking Asian hotels.

What is your key to success?

We have strong foundations; we haven’t deviated from my mother’s plan. What we must continue to do is believe in Thailand. For the long journey ahead for our Thai company, this is to be embraced as an advantage, at least from my perspective as both Thai and international businessman.

What is your future plan?

We plan to open five more hotels overseas next year, but that doesn’t mean we will not continue to invest in Thailand. We already plan to open in India, Abu Dhabi, America, and China. JULY - AUGUST 2012 NOW TRAVEL ASIA 117

When was Royal Porcelain established? Where did the idea originate?

The Royal Porcelain foundation was established 28-years ago. It was originally called T.G. Ceramics (Thai- German Ceramics), and was founded by an executive team. At that time, the ceramics and tableware industries were comparatively small – such products were made only by a handful of small companies -, thus the team agreed to develop the company by producing ceramic tableware. What was your inspiration to join the porcelain industry?

The Road to Global Brand Recognition

Royal Porcelain

The Widespread use of Royal Porcelain within the hospitality industry, particularly in hotels, has allowed this seamless and multi-functional ware to retain its status. Behind the success of Royal Porcelain is Thai national Mr. Kamolaphat Teepsuwan, a man who is determined to continue to develop and improve his trade. This exclusive interview with Mr. Kamolaphat Teepsuwan,Director of Sales and Marketing, provides insight into the hidden world of Royal Porcelain.

118 NOW TRAVEL ASIA JULY - AUGUST 2012

I didn’t become involved with the production team until 2002, but I do know that the first production team started with the making of ceramic tiles, before branching off in different directions. As the executive team recognised similarities between the production methods involved in the making of their new and existing products, they chose to continue to make domestic products, only this time using a different medium. The hotel industry, our target market, is a difficult one to approach because of the disparity of design of the porcelain pieces commonly found in hotels as opposed to those found in the home. What state was the company in when you began working in administration?

I started to work here during the floating of the Thai Baht, an economic landscape in which our export business flourished; 80% of our total sales come from exports. For the last 2 years, I have been responsible for identify areas of growth and

Royal Porcelain:

Innovative market leaders of design

increasing economic importance, including China, India, and South America. How well do you think your brand fares in the global marketing?

Currently, we sell the product over 50-60 countries worldwide. All of our products are stamped underneath with ‘Made in Thailand’; our business is a kind of channel that allows for greater exposure for Thai-made brands. Besides the production of Royal Porcelain, our main product, our company also engages in OEM “Original Equipment Manufacturing” production for the leading global tableware brands. It is also a guarantee of the quality and reliability of Royal Porcelain products. Many agencies distribute our products as a matter of priority and most recognise us as best sellers. For example, in Norway - our product can be found in every leading stores and we are the bestseller among top brands.

In previous years, how did you go about constructing the brand, and what is your overall mission?

In the beginning, we established Royal Porcelain as the main brand and many sub brand under Royal Porcelain. However, having too many brands cause confusion; this is an existing weak point of the brand. Then, we decided to launch the new brand ‘DEVA’ in an attempt to elevate our new market position. As we have discovered, it takes a long time to create a popular brand. Some of our existing renowned brands are difficult to cancel, as many are still popular today. We decided to sell them together, offering our customers the ultimate decision. Our next step depends upon the agencies and in what ways they decide to promote the products. We make it our mission to assist those agencies and assistants in the advertising process.

“The Ceramics industry is a difficult one to access, but we are proud that a Thai brand has finally been introduced to the global stage.” How do you predict market trends?

We utilise trade fairs and surveys to identify buyer preferences such as fashionable colours and shapes. We also study feedback reports from our agencies to aid in the assimilation of new concepts. The key to Success…

Enthusiastic sales representatives and staff, as well as diversity of product, are essential in today’s market. Diversity of merchandise, though, is heavily reliant upon buying trends, location and target audience. Our responsibilities are twofold, operating in the hotel and retail distribution industries, and mainly involve working against rapidly produced, brand less wares as made in China.

Then, we have to look forward the way to maintain our brand and product by develop the product as well emphasize the customer service. Serving our customer needs of constantly fluctuate, product materials design is integral. Nowadays, most countries with high market potential are to be found in Asia, since Europe is facing economic meltdown. Brazil, however, is an interesting country, with high potential. Though we sell at the Medium- High market level, we will never entirely abandon the lower end of the market. Mr.Kamolaphat says …

132 NOW TRAVEL ASIA JULY - AUGUST 2012

Indonesia

Sumatra is a small island, approximately 500,000 sq.km, divided into 6 provinces, including South Sumatra, Riau, Aceh and North Sumatra.

Not only is Medan the capital of North Sumatra, but also the province’s business and trading capital, where tourists can find easy access to local tourist attractions such as Lake Toba, Sipisopiso and Berastagi.

JULY - AUGUST 2012 NOW TRAVEL ASIA 133

134 NOW TRAVEL ASIA JULY - AUGUST 2012

O

riginally, Kampung Medan was located at the point where the Deli River met the Babura. Much of the island’s population, some 2.7 million people, are Malay Muslim – Malay and Bahasa are the two predominant languages. According to the diaries of early 16th Century Portuguese merchants, the name Medan derives from the word Medina, a holy city in Western Saudi Arabia; other sources indicate that the name Medan comes from the Hindi ‘maidan’, meaning ground or land. What is known is that the first inhabitants of Medan came from the Malays of the Malay Peninsula.

Day 1, Medan Parapat

Medan – a mythological city The 2-storey, 30-room Maimoon or Medan’s Sultan Palace, our first stop, has a striking interior design that mixes elements of Malay, Islamic, Mogul, Spanish, Italian, and Indian cultural heritage. This grand palace constructed from wood and concrete and featuring a beautiful pyramid-shaped roof, was built between 1887-1891 and has been home to many generations of royals. The current sultan, Aria Mahmud Lamanjiji, was only eight years old when he was installed as the 14th Sultan of Deli in 2005, replacing his father, who died in a plane crash. He is the youngest sultan in Deli history and currently resides in Sulawesi. Next, we took the journey to Masjid Raya Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, a giant mosque at the centre of the city of Bandah Aceh, Aceh province. The mosque, of great symbolic significance to the people of Aceh, was completed in 1881. As it survived the devastating 2004 tsunami, which destroyed much of the rest of the city, it stands as a national symbol of Acehnese religion and culture. JULY - AUGUST 2012 NOW TRAVEL ASIA 135

Another area of local importance is the Chinese-European Art-Deco Tjong a Fie Mansion, built by a Hakka Han merchant of the same name, sometimes called ‘Majoor der Chineezen’ or ‘Leader of the Chinese’, who also constructed the Medan-Belawan railway and who subsequently came to own much of the land in Sumatra. Nearby Cemars Asri is home to Indonesia’s biggest temple, the majestic Maha Vihara Duta Maitreya, a showcase of BuddhistChinese art that exudes warmth and inner peace. Whilst in the north, we decided to end our day at the Kawn Im Statue and Temple, Pematang, Siantar, the biggest Avalokitesvara Bodhissatva Statue in Indonesia and, at 22.8 metres in height, the tallest statue in South-East Asia. Catur Mahadewa Raja or ‘guardians of hell’ surround the statue, and the area also features a giant bell, a praying wheel and 33 small Kwan Im statues that circle the main statue. Day 2, Samosir Island Tour The next day, we woke up early, eagerly anticipating our boat trip across Lake Toba to the volcanic and largest island within an island in the world, Samosir. The calm, silent Lake Toba offers excellent views of Mount Sinabung, and with its crystal clear waters, is the ultimate place for relaxation. As the boat continued along the lake, a story unfolded as we learned more of Samosir Island and its Batak inhabitants, continuing their daily lives on the bank of the lake. The various Batak peoples of North Sumatra, who have occupied these islands for generations, also have a rich architectural heritage. Typically, architecture and village layouts of the six Batak groups show significant variety, some houses being elongated or boat-shaped with intricately carved gables and upsweeping roof ridges painted in red and black, other rising up on tiers. Many of the souvenir shops found along roadsides in the surrounding areas accommodate small shops selling hand-made carvings and dyed fabrics. The Batak people also have a colourful history that includes themes of ritual cannibalism, shamanism, witchcraft and magic as well as music and dance. 136 NOW TRAVEL ASIA JULY - AUGUST 2012

Afterwards, we stopped to visit the stone Tomb of King Sidabutar in Tomok, Samosir, a one-hour walk from Tuk-tuk, and a place where one can find beautiful Batak houses. Whilst in the Batak highlands of Sumatra, we highly recommend a visit to the Sipisopiso plunge waterfall, Indonesia’s highest waterfall and a major tourist attraction, situated 25KM from the Kabanjahe municipality. Day 3, A heavenly resort On the final day of our journey, we visited Berastagi ‘rice store’, a town and sub district of Karo Regency (1220 metres above sea-level and, consequently, cool year-round), situated at a crossroads on the main route linking the Karo highlands of Northern Sumatra to coastal Medan. Located two and a half hours from the sprawling, urban Medan, Berastagi is an escape from Indonesia's third-largest city. Trekking, hot springs, waterfalls, and a national park attract backpackers and travelers who wish to trade the sweltering city for cleaner country air. Berastagi’s primary function is as a base for exploring surrounding attractions, though it is famous in its own right for its fruit, vegetable and flower market, being most well known for its

sweet-tasting passion fruit; other crops include Japanese persimmon, chayote and avocado. For an extra special touch, travel around the town on horseback. The town’s main attractions are its two active volcanoes: Gunung Sibayak, with its hot springs, and Gunung Sinabung. Sibayak, probably Indonesia’s most accessible market, is 2,100m high and a relatively easy climb for intermediate to expert climbers; guidelines indicate around a 3-hour climb. Before we left this beautiful town, we stopped at the recently finished Pagoda Shwedagon Replica, influenced by Taiwanese, Chinese, Thai and Burmese design. This smaller replica of the Burmese original, 46.8 meters in height, was constructed almost entirely from materials sourced from Myanmar. After our final stop, we took a well deserved rest to reflect upon our journey to Indonesia, a country with so much more to offer than most; a true Asian gem that combines Dutch influences with a distinctly Oriental feel. It would not be long until we revisited Indonesia, a country with more and more to uncover with each visit.

Special thanks to a wonderful trip by Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy Republic of Indonesia and Indonesia Air Asia
