S
ince 2 issues ago we decided to step back and look at the progress of the magazine leading up to the end of the year edition. We are satisfied with our progress to say the least and have worked out some kinks. Our focus next will be on our year end issue where we have taken reader and traveler votes which will give us some insight of what subjects to keep our eye on. This issue we decided to showcase the latest in arts and design around Asia. We selected stand out properties , new concepts, and one of a kind designs to look look at. We are learning more with every issue. We merged our wedding addition magazine and constructed a new section of the magazine dedicated to romance and marriage in NOW Travel Asia.We encourages reader feedback, ideas, and criticism to help us progress. The staff at NOW Travel Asia are a great group of hard working individuals. Thanks to our staff, thanks to our readers! “Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.” - Mark Victor Hansen Kanapot Sitthiwong Editor-in-Chief editor@nowtravelasia.com

World’s most inclined tower Hyatt Capital Gate, Abu Dhabi Dubai is known for its amazing engineering project but its neighboring city Abu Dhabi has raised the stakes in in the world of design and architecture with a stunning world record holding result. Situated on the Persian Gulf lies Abu Dhabi, the capital and the second largest city of the United Arab Emirates in terms of population and the largest of the seven member emirates of the United Arab Emirates.Capital gate is the most incline skyscraper on the planet, defying gravity it leans almost four times that of
the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. The beautiful structure takes from two key elements of the surrounding area, water and desert. First, it takes on the shape of a desert whirlwind leaning and twisting shooting 160 meters into the sky. Second, while the curved eye-catching canopy, known as the ‘splash’, which runs over the adjoining grandstand and rises up on one side of the building to the 18th floor. As for the hotel, it has a sleek, futuristic, contemporary design that offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surround-
ing gulf. Some striking features of the iconic Capital Gate lies ninety meters up, one of the highest suspended swimming pools in the world. On the interior side upon entering the lobby is a decor known as The Wave. The Wave is one of the largest glass art installations in the world composed of over six thousand hand crafted components hanging down chandelier like in an oval formation and depicts a very contemporary and modern feel surrounded with white marble floors, dark wood paneling and royal blue question mark
shaped couches to add a splash of colour. The rooms are designed with a careful selection of muted earth tones and natural textures. The tower is also strategically important to Abu Dhabi and visually represents the emirate’s progress and evolution. It is the focal point of a world class business district, and is interconnected with the thriving Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. Brilliant and artful engineering.

A step out of the ordinary
Spencer Ogdon, Singapore
For most of us, going to the office means sitting in from of a desk in a cubicle surrounded by white walls, pin boards full of memos, and grey metallic file cabinets, very dull, very monotonic. On the 23rd floor in Central Singapore, Spencer Ogdon a global energy recruiter turned a corporate work environment into what looks like a landscaper’s dream of a perfect lawn.
36
The office sits on a floor of Astroturf with giant spaciously spaced round tables reminiscing the days of King Arthur’s round table. The office design is British and riddled with Asian twists which make each room very flamboyant in presentation. From a fifties-diner style kitchen to conference rooms imaging grand private homes, it’s safe to say that this office is flowing of creativity.

The Crocky Boutique Crocodile Vivocity, Singapore For years the Singaporean brand Crocodile has been delivering quality garments on an international level. Recently their presentation to consumers has taken a unique approach. UPSTAIRS Singaporean designer Dennis Cheok and his Dutch partner, Joyce van Saane has fathomed up Crocodile Concept Boutique at Vivocity, Singapore, which is worth a look at. Its really throwing a double design at you, one, for the fashionable designs of Crocodile’s clothing line and two, in the environment they are presented in which is really our main focus here.
Now, about the boutique shop. At a quick glance, thoughts of a sporting good store may cross your mind, due to the structural steel framing reminding you of....... an old school gym locker? The shops centerpiece gallery is designed for customer's first encounter which sits center of the boutique. Its purpose is adaptive and can be used for multiple purposes. The middle structure may be a reconfigurable display, a gallery space, or a pop-up store. Its store in store like approach really adds versatility in the boutique overall. The gallery has louvered window frames with hexagonal wire mesh panels with lighting positioned to
cast shadows that remind you of crocodile scales. The boutique outer walls are lined with near ceiling timber and leather clad panels on one side and mirrors on the other which are fully rotatable and can be adjusted to showcase Crocodile’s fashion line ups.

Named after the first spacecraft to reach the surface of the Moon, Luna 2 Studio makes a bold leap away from the ‘modern Balinese’ style resorts and villas on the island of Bali in Indonesia. Designed by owner Melanie Hall, the ‘studiotel’ evokes a strong sense of nostalgia with its modernist-inspired interiors. Approaching the hotel exterior, Luna 2 Studio’s facade brings us back to the ‘60s with its circular forms, and iconic art references

old fashion siam charm the siam bangkok, thailand
The inspiration of the Siam hotel comes from the overall setting that reflects the period of Bangkok’s greatest grandeur, under King Rama V with Art Deco accents of old. Set on 3 acres of river frontage of the, Chao Phraya River. The privately owned and operated 39-room luxury retreat will transport you to a bygone serenity suffused with priceless antiquities, oriental allure and contemporary comforts. Though the surrounding area and riverside are merely average, the hotel flourishes on the interior décor which is absolutely stunning with a few jaw dropping surprises. Yes, the inside is that amazing.
he Siam was conceived by creative director and celebrity Krissada Sukosol Clapp, together with globally acclaimed architect and interior/landscape designer Bill Bensley, one of Architectural Digest’s ‘Top 100 Designers and Most Creative People’. The vision they had in mind was to take a collection of antiquities Krissada had and house them in a stylish exquisite hotel with many characteristics. To emphasize this, a muted color scheme of black, white, cream, grey and neutrals has been combined with natural textures such as wood, weave, leather and stone, not to mention sprawling gardens and verdant shrubs throughout. Some areas of the hotel are mystical in setting from the exotic orient while others areas seem like a early 1920s upscale restaurant However, the breathtaking wall of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain and the Han Dynasty clay horse drawing a coach in front shows the Siam is almost a museum first and hotel second. Stunning. The hotel is separated into 2 sections with 3 suite categories: Siam,
T
Mae Nam, and River View. Another option are the pool villas where you can choose to be in one of the crafted Thai colonial, Chinese, or Art Deco Style furnishings and wall decor. They are spacious, private and intimate showcasing original antiques from various owners of the property. At the top of the hierarchy is Connie’s Suite, a traditional wooden Thai house that Kamala bought from a Bangkok socialite, Connie Mangskau. She had it brought it from the old royal city of Ayutthaya and used it for entertaining. In keeping with the unusual room scale of The Siam, it doesn’t look at the river at all. Dining is no different from the rest of the interior of the hotel, themed, to set a mood and ambience to go hand in hand with your meal anytime of the day. Few of the venues to mention first is the Deco Bar and Bistro. Its snappy black & white interiors bring to life Thailand’s Art Deco period, with international comfort cuisine inspired by the jazzy ambiance with boasting a dazzling display of wall-mounted brass instruments along with comfortable seating. Secondly the chef’s table at day is a cooking class and a private exclusive time with the chef for a few of you and your friends. There are plenty of services in top condition with the best technology, service, and a genuinely unique time you won’t see at any other hotel in Bangkok. If you’re a lover of art and décor stop in you won’t be disappointed.

hua Chang heritage bangkok, thailand
Lastly we look at the newly opened Hua Chang Heritage on Phayathai Road offers services that meld past present and future. Located near one of the Noisiest areas in Bangkok, gridlock and all, the hotel simulates a total resort feeling inside, relaxing, with peace and quiet as if you’re in some oasis away from the maddening urban jungle. The Baiyoke group has brought a considerable amount of expertise in the industry with this luxury hotel project. They built a hotel with a keen sense of history, an understanding of contemporary desires, and a clear vision of the future. 46
he Luxury urban retreat showcases its guests with a “Thai Colonial” architecture upon sight and stays consistent with the elements down to each appealing guest room. Hua Chang, a direct translation of “elephant head” in Thai, is the name of the nearby bridge built by King Rama V, who ushered Thailand into the modern times. The 7-storey Hua Chang Heritage Hotel is the newest development by the Baiyoke family, owners of the tallest building in Thailand. Baiyoke Sky was named after this historic bridge, a relic of an era when travel was largely equated with the romance of opulence, luxury, and exclusivity which is the values of which the Heritage Hotel is found on. Walking into the lobby is like stepping into a scene from “Alice in Wonderland,” but toned down by an elegant with fashion design elements that are compellingly attractive. Hints of Thai colonial tradition influence are everywhere, and even the service staff is
T
dressed in elegant chong kraben enhancing the sense of arrival. Rooms are colored in bright magentas, purples, and cobalt blues, a nod to the colors of the Thai lotus which energizes each guestroom and suite. Ceiling beams reflect construction techniques of traditional Thai teak homes. Public spaces at the hotel include a free-form swimming pool with a pool bar designed to look like a domed elephant howdah made of bamboo. The mix of traditional tastes and contemporary luxuries can be found at Miss Siam, the all-day venue serving American and Thai dishes. Miss Siam features an open-kitchen design allowing diners to watch the chefs at work as well as lotus-shaped windows and a traditional Thai roof. The hotels mentioned are unique in design which is the focus of each hotel at creation. The artistic characteristics of each design hotel displays surrounding modern culture, trends, and traditional history and recreates the for guests around the world to experience.

A light in the city lit! bangkok hotel bangkok, Thailand
The heart of Bangkok…….. Did you picture a strip with mega department stores, beautifully decorated retail shops, a Bangkok Art and Culture Centre? Did you imagine hearing the grinding sound from the Sky train, cars slowly moving at a snail’s pace honking their horns while crowds of people native and foreign roam the strip for shopping, food, and entertainment? Hidden in all that chaos a mere few minutes away from the urban cluster you can find one of the most unique and diverse modern design hotels in Bangkok, Lit!. The name is quite simple but has huge purpose behind its title. The architects of VaSLab Architecture utilizes the hotel’s electric surroundings as the core concept of the design. 48
t first glance, the hotel seems a bit odd as the building is L shaped with what seems to bear a façade composition representing a dynamic folding mask with patterned punctures that gives a various amount of light in and out. The building follows suit with its artistic presentation and surrounding influences of artistry. There are really 2 sides to this hotel, in the day the look is simple, modern and sleek, and at night, elegant with a play on lighting ambience. The Fiesta Steppe is a series of inclined terrace-like decks where you can enjoy light snacks or get delicious cocktails which serves as a front of the hotel. The lobby from day to night turns into a warm and gentle relaxing welcome area for guests upon arrival from the more business oriented feel from the natural lighting in the daytime. Deeper into the hotel you’ll notice that setting of dim and colorful lights change the mood around every turn and corridor.

The design hotel is a gem in a very heavy urban setting with diversity and change happening at a moment’s notice, however,. LIT! Bangkok has taken that and turned it into a masterpiece with design, creativity, and service in the form of one of the best unique accommodations in Bangkok.
In terms of the interior,“The aim of architectural lighting is to use light to emphasise the important features of the building and its urban setting, supporting its historic, artistic and social value”, in which it has done beautifully, it’s surprisingly simple, from the reception counter with just a touch of colorful glass to emphasis the space, to the subtle color tones, which are mainly the actual colors of the materials. The rooms subtly can adapt to varying moods throughout the day. LIT! Bangkok offers 4 different room types each with a contrast interior scheme. What you see and feel in the early afternoon will change at sunset and into the night. After a day of visiting the surrounding malls and exploring the local art center you have a few very pleasant options to choose from. Dining at the BCDE restaurant
(Bistro of Creative Drinking & Eating) where delicious Thai and International cuisine can be enjoyed in a classy cozy dining venue. Entering The Kiriya Spa seems like its detached from the hotel with its spiritual environment. The earthen tones and dim lighting separates you from the city(and hotel) to come to terms with total relaxation and rejuvenation of mind, body, and spirit through a breathtaking range of sumptuously indulgent treatments. The methods and environment setting takes you back to an older time inspired by that of natural herbs and medicine and the use of different Thai performing arts from all regions over Thailand influencing the massage process. Bottom line a total must have indulgent if you’re paying a visit to LIT! Bangkok.

BARRY ISRAEL AND LE NGOC KHANH TAM VIETNAM’S DYNAMIC DUO Saigon Interiors owners Barry Israel and Le Ngoc Khanh Tam has taken a turn in a new direction developing a collection of seven, exquisite mile-high villas taking shape in the one-time colonial French hill station of Dalat. In August, soon after construction finished on the first villa, we caught up with Barry and Tam to learn more about what makes La Vallee de Dalat so special and what else the entrepreneurial pair is working on. Tam tells us that the villas are no ordinary villas, “ La Vallee de Dalat is the first high-end, privately-owned, freehold land development in this city.” Barry then added,” First of all, it’s the views. La Vallee de Dalat faces
east over a gorgeous forested valley and more mountains. Second is the quality of the construction.” Tam tells us that they drew the inspiration from Dalat’s French history and a house in Southern California that Barry spent a great deal of time in which sported tremendous views overlooking the ocean. In our last question to the couple we wanted to know what future plans the couple had in store and Tam close our interview with, “Our next project is to focus more of Saigon Interiors’ business on hotel and residential projects.”

She responded, “When I design I draw inspiration from all beautiful things in nature and in my environment. I incorporate many of these elements in my fine jewellery, sometimes more literally, sometimes combining influences and stones to create a synergy of presentation.” Her inspirations come from her surroundings such as all beautiful things in nature or a natural abstract pattern.”I think the perfect jewel both enhances and reflects the beauty of the wearer, and should be chosen accordingly.”, she states, when we asked her about client their connection with your designs.

Now the Unlisted collection consists of Six boutique hotels and six restaurants in three major cosmopolitan cities. We here at NOW travel Asia wanted to know hi take on the business side with the Asians & Global Travelers. His thoughts, “I think 2014 remains a tricky year economically so perhaps more design led mid-priced properties would be a good bet! Demand will always be there so it’s a question of making yourself relevant to what the modern traveler is looking for.People are after the
experience and authenticity now rather than the highest thread count or most marble. It’s really about having something that you can savour after the actual trip and store it away as an experience. In this line of business it is important to continually innovate and to try new things. We do make a huge effort to make sure we stay ahead of the curve and provide our guests with new experiences and new ideas. We should always be seen as fresh and innovative. I think Asia will continue to be a big source market and we will see that market becoming more sophisticated and requiring a different level of service going forward.“

This bold restaurant takes cuisine by the horns and mixes up food from different cultures, countries, and at times even courses, to create a unique menu that screams Mix. Each dish will focus on maintaining the original flavor but make it more interesting with the design. Colours clash and complement in a kaleidoscope of creativity; starters are enhanced into mains, elements of desserts are fused into appetisers and soups are deconstructed into entrees. One is never quite sure what a bite is going to taste like, but is guaranteed a taste explosion nonetheless. The chefs at Mix seem to be allergic to blandness of any kind and they love the art of presentation.

Taiwan Noodle House Beijing China
T
aiwan Noodle House by Gollucci International Design incorporates a modern design classics and contemporary pieces with traditional Chinese elements such as the breath-taking bowl wall and massive wind-chimes made out of thousands of chopsticks. The table arrangements inspire openness and seem to be an invite to socializing. This is the type of restaurant where you go have a peaceful meal and a quality laugh with your friends, rather than a romantic dinner with your loved one. The tables are of a lighter brown and the big windows provide an open space effect in what some may think is a semi invasive dining experience, which is quite the opposite. Good food and socializing in a beautiful interior is their name of the game.
Lee Hsuheng
Established by Taiwan-born, London-trained designer Lee Hsuheng in 2004, Lee took the role of lead designer for the Taiwan Noodle House Ningbo, China. His style of Chinese heritage symbols like porcelain bowls and chopsticks to add a touch of nostalgia which is apparent in the noodle house. He States “Instead, we used Chinese symbols like the bowls and the chopsticks to reflect a modern style. I think the space reflects Chinese culture in a contemporary context.

To accomplish what you have done over the last 40 years you have to think outside the box, what influenced your business creativity side to think outside the box? I have always been a creative thinker. I started in the fashion business at a young age, and I’ve carried through that creativity to everything that I do, from property development to restaurants to hotels to film production to theme parks. What you need to do is look at a situation and think about how to provide a product or service that the customer doesn’t have access to yet but you know they will like. It doesn’t have to be a whole new concept, just a slight variation is sometimes enough, you just need to exceed your customers’ expectations and you’ll have a winner.
What was the most defining moment in your life and why did you choose that specific moment? I have a lot of important moments in my life, it’s hard to pick just one. More recently, I took up Chinese citizenship after living here for over 35 years. It wasn’t a big deal to me because Hong Kong has been my home and has given me so much over the years, it was only natural. But it was a great feeling to be able to call HK my real home.
In past interviews you said you’re very good at negotiating, what advice would you give business wise to help a young entrepreneur succeed in today's work environment. There are always two sides to a negotiation if one side is too unhappy the deal isn’t going to happen, so I always focus on not being too greedy and leave something on the table for the other party. There’s no point in trying to get the maximum out of every deal if it means most of them don’t work out.
How does the use of technology and social media affect your decisions in future projects in Asia? Technology, and especially social media, are extremely important to everything I do now. In China the most efficient tool to promote a product or service is through social media and its powerful word-of-mouth effect. So I make sure I give plenty of opportunity for my customers to have a memorable experience,
take some great photos, because they will share those with their friends, family and strangers, which in turn will bring even more people to come by.With technology, we now have the ability to collect so much information about our customers, their behavior, what they think about your product. You have to be smart about how to use this information but if you get it right, it is so valuable.
You have a great passion for Hong Kong, as a world traveler, are there any other cities that really impress you? Why? Chengdu is definitely in my top list. It’s such an exciting city but so relaxing at the same time. A few years ago nobody outside of China had
heard of Chengdu, and now it’s one of the top cities. They just hosted the Global Fortune Forum and half of the Fortune 500 companies have an office in Chengdu. The people of Chengdu know how to have a good time, they love to socialise and now I’ve learned they like to try new things all the time!
What’s next in store for Allan Zeman? I have so much going on at the same time it’s hard to define which direction I’m heading. But I love it, I love working on different projects, helping to make life better for as many people as possible, bringing happiness and new experiences.

Kate Babington TREE managing director NOW Travel Asia has recently contacted TREE managing director Kate Babington and got the privilege of asking her a few questions to get some insight about TREE. TREE is Hong Kong’s first eco-chic furniture boutique. The products are typically made from recycled, ethical and Eco-friendly materials. The company strives to maintain ethical practices within their business and primarily go for simple, modern, and sophisticated designs. Kate leads the way for the success of the company.
TREE
Having been born and raised in Hong Kong and having studied and worked in the UK, would you say that you have experienced the best of both eastern and western cultures, and has this experience led to your success in retail marketing, fair trade, sourcing and ethical purchasing? It's a huge privilege to have lived and worked in both the UK and Hong Kong, and to have travelled extensively across Asia. Travelling of any sort and the fresh perspective it brings is hugely energising. The dynamism and positivity of Asia is infectious (it’s no coincidence that I still live here) in terms of my professional 92
life. I’ve been in the eco-friendly industry for more years than I can remember, but there is no doubt that I owe a huge debt of gratitude to my training at The Body Shop. As a Sourcing Manager for The Body Shop International (BSI), I was posted to Hong Kong on secondment to establish The Body Shop’s far east sourcing base ensuring that the company only purchased from suppliers that complied with its ethical standards in addition to being commercially viable. Working for The Body Shop International certainly provided me with great experience in retail marketing, fair trade and sourcing and led me to discover my passion for ethical purchasing, which has continued and flourished while I do the sourcing for TREE.
Tell us about your passionate career path from when you worked at The Body Shop to being the Managing Director of TREE, which was firstly launched in 2005? I spent more time at The Body Shop International than I did in secondary school so I don’t believe that it could not have influenced me in some shape or form. I absolutely loved my time with them and appreciated all the opportunities they gave me. This was truly evident when I did my Masters in Marketing part time while working at BSI and having the opportunity to share experiences with people from other companies. Fundamentally, I learnt how a business could be run differently and profit with principles and
NOW Travel Asia

ensuring that you operate with integrity to everyone whether it is suppliers, customers, our staff, and everyone who touches the business.
What is the biggest challenge running this preeminent eco brand concept in HK? Starting any business is difficult and every day is a learning curve. The biggest difficulty overall has been finding suppliers with the same passion and ethos as TREE and in this regard we have been extremely lucky and fortunate to have great partners in this area and we are very grateful for that. Having worked at The Body Shop International for most of my professional life, I have had to adapt from being supported in a large corporate environment to a small business, that has been challenging and scary at times but also incredibly invigorating and motivating. The main challenge now is that there are never enough hours in a day!
What is some of the feedback from HK people then and now? Are people becoming more environmentally responsible? Eco-living by all aspects is becoming more and more popular. With so much “taking” from the planet, we feel that every little bit counts to “give back” where we can, small changes can make a difference. As more people want to go back to nature and are looking for solutions, the need for manufacturers and retailers to offer these to customers will become more common. Social media has meant that manufacturers and retailers have to be more accountable for all aspects of their business and that can only be a good thing. We are proud to be the pioneers in sustainable furnishings and that we can offer the option of eco-friendly design to our customers. We are thrilled that more people are recognising the benefits of going eco here in Hong Kong, both retailers and customers. It can only be a positive change for the future.
From a little seed to a big tree now, what is the key to success for TREE? Everything we do at TREE is from the heart. We pride ourselves on treating all those who touch our business, from how we treat staff, suppliers and customers with respect. We are fortunate enough to have aligned with partners who have the same focus as us in preserving the environment and that also have fantastic design capabilities retaining that unique handcrafted quality that make these pieces so special. We believe that we are the market leader in Hong Kong of eco-friendly design. We understand wood, we know how versatile it can be and we love providing a breadth of styles and innovative designs to our customers.
TREE The strong character and individuality of each handcrafted piece is what our customers are drawn to. There is more interest in the area of sustainable furnishing options developing in Hong Kong, and we are unique in terms of a complete focus in this area and in the pieces we offer, the standards we meet as well as the drive and passion that we have as a team.
How does the use of technology and social media affect your decisions on your current projects and any future projects? It's often said that we now live in a global economy. We can communicate across borders almost if not actually, instantly, and so we are seeing more ideas, information, trends and concerns more shared and understood. More and more people have the tools to educate themselves and there is a growing understanding and appreciation that there is only one planet and that we need to take care of it. From a commercial perspective, the growing openness brought about by technology and social media makes it more important than ever to be transparent as a company. Customers want and deserve to know exactly what they are buying and who they are buying from. And from a purely practical level, this instant-sharing is a massive benefit. Photo sharing has transformed my buying trips! I can share things I am really excited about with the team straight away and get their thoughts.
As a successful businesswoman with a strong passion for your company, and an environmentally conscious individual, is there any
place in HK that always impresses you? Where is the place in HK that we can usually find you spending the most time at? I absolutely love HK, it is my home. Walking around The Peak, when looking down on the city I have to take a moment to appreciate the beauty and the energy of the city. I never fail to be impressed by the sky line. We are lucky to live in this city. When not at Horizon Plaza, where I spend most of my time, to keep my energy up I ensure that I have down time whether it’s spending time with friends or doing various forms of exercise. I enjoy relaxing at home where I can read or have friends over for dinner and relax and unwind. The good weather now means that it is perfect for a hike! The Dragon’s Back hike down to Shek O is fantastic and there is a fabulous little Thai restaurant on the beach to enjoy a great meal and a couple of drinks as a reward! A work life balance is definitely important it’s a constant balancing act to achieve but I do try!
What’s the next plan for TREE in HK? To continue what we are doing and to get better and bigger while continuing to enjoy what we do! Eco-chic is at the heart of our brand and we will stay true to our values, continue to walk the talk and continue to enjoy what we do. Right now we are focusing on continuing to grow TREE in Hong Kong. We currently have four stores here in Hong Kong and we are happy to see the brand reach more and more people of different nationalities. We are excited for the future! NOW Travel Asia

You started your career by managing your family business of OEM watches based in Hong Kong. How did you come to venture into leading the current success of your group Ovolo Hotels? Working in watches taught me that time moves on! We were quite successful in the 1980s and 90s but I saw timepieces were largely becoming a sunset industry as we approached the next millennium. My kids’ generation uses their mobile phones to see the time and everything else for that matter. I stumbled into property development really. We were looking for a site for my wife’s Indian restaurant and stumbled upon an unused building in Central, close by to where I grew up. Originally I thought it was just the ground floor for sale but when I heard the whole building was up I decided to make a move. After conducting extensive market research with my friends and advisors, we decided to develop the building into the flagship Ovolo serviced apartment. We designed rooms that were modern, fresh and full of the things guests actually needed like abundant power sockets, lights and premium amenities with no excess clutter.
What influenced and inspired your philosophy and vision for the functional design of your rooms and ideas to cater fully to guests’ needs?
Girish Jhunjhnuwala the founder and CEO of Ovolo Hotels We take a glimpse into the world of Mr. Girish Jhunjhnuwala, Founder and CEO of Ovolo Hotels. Girish began his career in the watch business before venturing into property development in 2001, acquiring a Hong Kong apartment complex and transforming it into Ovolo’s first flagship property. An active member of domestic and international organizations, Girish is ever at the forefront of modern technology, and his dedication to innovative ideas distinguishes Ovolo from other hotels. Most recently, in August he launched a brand new super-fast 1GB internet service and citywide Wi-Fi at over 9,000 hotspots in Hong Kong, free for all Ovolo guests.

Travel has always been the source for my inspiration, through my own experiences and from discussing with other business travelers what they really want from their hotels and serviced apartments. For example: the idea to always provide free Breakfast, free Wi-Fi, free minibar, free happy hour and more to guests came about because I simply hated being hit with hidden usage costs and added expenses when I stayed at hotels abroad. I believe if you pay for the room, everything in there should be yours so this is the rule at all Ovolo properties. In addition to these services we know guests appreciate having the latest ensuite tech so we make sure to have big flat screens with AppleTV, ipads, game consoles and more available. Our commitment to creating attractive, light-filled and spacious interiors further separates us from the field. Every room in our Ovolo hotels and serviced apartments has gone through hundreds of design revisions to ensure that every space delivers the maximum in comfort and functionality for guests.

quality time together, be it hiking along Hong Kong’s many country parks, practicing yoga, indulging in a good meal, or seeing each other at the Ovolo offices.
From all your world travels to many cities, what has been your most inspiring trip to-date? Where is your favourite place to travel for leisure? I am interested in visiting the hip cultural districts of major cities like New York’s Meatpacking district or Soho in London, and seeing how these cosmopolitan neighborhoods bring out the best from their hotels through inventive interior designs and innovative guest experiences.
Ovolo celebrated their 10th year anniversary last year. From then until now, are you still passionate about what you do? Do you have any business interests beyond Ovolo Hotels? What advice would you give to the young up and coming generation of entrepreneurs? Hotels are absolutely my passion. I put myself into every aspect of our Ovolo properties, from opening onwards. Perhaps having such an active owner in different from most hotel chains but through a decade of working together my team is used to it. Overall the creative architectural aspects of this business keeps me interested, and positive guest reviews keep me motivated.
Outside of Ovolo Hotels, which includes our integrated restaurant chain Cafe O, my business interests include being the Chairman and majority shareholder of Shalimar Paints Ltd., a publicly listed company in India, and directing several companies under the Singapore-based Hind Group umbrella. Through my daughter Avni I have also become involved in more CSR activities, including the KELY Board, which provides counseling, education and support to at-risk lower-income and minority youths in Hong Kong. My advice for this upcoming generation of entrepreneurs is to have patience and belief in your ability to execute. When I first opened Ovolo in September 2002, it was tough. Through November, we’d only had only one person stay, a pilot for Cathay Pacific. I got together with some friends and advisors and asked them what was missing. They simply said: Just be patient. The product was new to Hong Kong and people weren’t used to it. Sure enough, by December things began picking up and by January we were already at 70 per cent occupancy. Since then, I’ve never looked back.
How do you start your ordinary day? How does your day end? To balance your home life and business, do you still have enough time to travel, play golf or wine and dine? How do you maintain this balance and make time for everything? I start my day at the gym, some cardio and yoga or a hike with my kids. I end my day with my family and friends and a nice glass of wine. The home-work balance is essential. You simply must make time for the things that are important. It helps that my family is close-knit and through our shared passions for travel and exercise we always find ways to spend a lot of
Are there any other cities beyond Hong Kong that are important for your business interest? Why? We opened our first international hotel in Melbourne, Australia last year so that city and country have become part of the Ovolo business family. Building on our success there we are now looking at other Australian cities to grow, including Brisbane and Sydney. Singapore, as mentioned earlier, is also important not only for current businesses under the Hind Group umbrella but also for Ovolo’s future expansion as well.
What’s next for Girish Jhunjhnuwala and Ovolo Hotels? This year we are launching two new hotels in Southside, Hong Kong. The first is an 85 room lifestyle hotel in Aberdeen, opened on August 1st. This hotel puts guests right in Hong Kong’s authentic old-world fishing community in bright colourful suites and guestrooms with sweeping sea views and design touches like fish net curtains, driftwood flooring, water-toned wallpaper, and hanging Chinese lanterns and buoys that all play off the surrounding area in a quirky modern fashion. The second Ovolo will be HK's first warehouse conversion style hotel and our biggest property with 162-rooms and a full-scale restaurant and sky bar on-site. This hotel will feature cool industrial touches in an ideal location for leisure travelers just minutes away from world-famous Ocean Park. We are also looking for new opportunities in Ovolo in Australia, Singapore, UK and around the Asia Pacific region. We want more people to know about Ovolo and to enjoy our bright rooms and bright ideas.

Raphael le Masne de Chermont executive chairman of shanghai tang Raphael le Masne de Chermont has previously worked for some of the biggest brands in the portfolio of Switzerland’s Richemont group. He requested to take on one of the group’s smaller investments. For Raphael, the change from watches and jewelry to a clothing line was a very significant one which would evolve into China’s first luxury lifestyle brand. NOW Travel Asia had a few questions for the French native about where it all began, where Shanghai Tang is now, and what direction it’s heading in the future.
Can you briefly tell us the story of Shanghai Tang from the start to the present? Shanghai Tang started in 1994 as a bespoke tailoring atelier where our Shanghainese tailors’ legendary craftsmanship combined with our modern design vision and use of both Chinese and European luxury fabrics, offered more contemporary qipao dresses and mandarin collar jackets. We then expanded our offer to ready-to-wear apparels and accessories for women, men and children, as well as lifestyle home and gift products. We have remained true to our mission as the global curator of modern Chinese chic by filtering through the richness and beauty of Chinese culture with our uniquely vibrant modern design aesthetics to bring products that are relevant to the cosmopolitan global citizens of today.
How has Shanghai Tang evolved over the years? We have evolved the brand by streamlining our design aesthetics to ensure that we deliver the Chinese cultural touch in a manner that is not 96
cliché and to differentiate ourselves from the tourist souvenir image. With the opening of our largest lifestyle flagship in Hong Kong last April, The Shanghai Tang Mansion and the recent opening of our largest flagship boutique in Shanghai, The Cathay Mansion, we have also revamped the boutique interior design to embody a contemporary luxury image. However, Shanghai Tang will remain differentiated with its multi-sensory shopping experience that includes signature Ginger Flower scent in-store, contemporary Chinese lounge music and our very friendly oriental sense of service.
How do you redefine the stereotypical title of “Made in China”? The reality is that many premium and luxury brands are also manufactured in China. China is capable of producing quality merchandise. We invest in finding the right production partners, building a team of quality control experts who travel regularly to production sites to supervise the quality of production at different stages and we are committed to sourcing quality materials and craftsmanship.
NOW Travel Asia
NOW22_71-140.indd 96

What is Shanghai Tang’s design direction? Shanghai Tang stays true to its role as the curator of modern Chinese aesthetics by always ensuring authenticity of the inspiration sources of the Chinese culture and giving it a fresh contemporary interpretation that is on trend with global developments and consumer needs. Our chief designer for women, Joseph Li takes the lead in developing a rich seasonal theme that draws inspiration from different facets of the Chinese culture, from specific chronological times to Chinese minority groups, from nature to Chinese contemporary art. The team of designers then works off this theme across the different product categories
How would you describe your approach to drawing consumers to your products? Shanghai Tang differentiates itself with its multi-sensory shopping experience. Many people’s first vivid recall of the brand is our signature Ginger Flower fragrance and many have followed the scent to find our boutiques! Both the experience of buying a gift and opening a gift from Shanghai Tang brings a sense of energy and joy with our distinctive vibrant lime green packaging box and creative wrapping paper filled with rich Chinese cultural motifs. Both the product design and the shopping experience is designed to convey a rich sense of storytelling, you always learn something more about the Chinese culture through us, from Chinese zodiac chopsticks to the symbolism behind our rich prints.
Who inspires you to work on these high-end products for Shanghai Tang? China deserves to have a successful luxury brand inspired by its incredibly rich culture. People always think it is impossible to make a Chinese brand famous worldwide but I believe Shanghai Tang has true potential to compete with other international luxury brands and the time has come for the acceptance of this pioneering luxury lifestyle brand on the global stage.
What is Shanghai Tang’s ultimate goal for your brand? To continue to be the leading Chinese luxury brand and grow brand awareness and distribution on the global fashion stage.
What’s in store for Shanghai Tang in the near future? We are planning many new products and experience for 2014, Shanghai Tang’s 20th anniversary. Stay tuned for more exciting news. NOW Travel Asia
