nowtravelasia.com January/February 2014

Shanghai Tang began with a small fashion boutique in the Pedder Building in Hong Kong’s Central district, selling Chinese fashion of the

1920s, including silk scarves and their famous velvet jackets lined with colorful silk. Of its 45 stores, 30 are in Greater China, including its latest flagship, Cathay Mansion in Shanghai, the city that inspired the brand’s birth. The new line is targeting China’s younger generation of 25-35 year old, called TTTT. This line includes both men’s wear and women’s wear. The Fall/Winter 2013 designs for the women’s wear line included beautiful leather and shearling coats, with sleek lines, but still reminiscent of the styles of the 1920s. Boiled wool cape, shantung silk embroidered dress, fur trimmed suits, and all were just stunning. The men’s wear line is equally as interesting, with the cotton brush suit jacket, print cotton shirts, cotton stretch brush suit pants, leather pants and velvet pants. Now, efforts are underway for expanding the brand in the West. Earlier this year Shanghai Tang entered into a 12-year worldwide licensing deal with Inter Parfums USA to create, produce, and distribute perfumes and related products, with plans to launch its first fragrance in Spring 2014.

After working for 10 years as a designer for different clothing brands, she decided it was a good time to change her direction. She started by designing unique evening gowns for television hosts and singers. She felt at the time that the local designs were bad and cheap and she really wanted to change the image of the MCs and redefine couture in China. Her passion for China’s rich history and heritage is reflected beautifully in her elaborate creations. Ornate

Immaculate and somewhat unorthodox gowns and dresses filled with colorful displays of fabrics. Guo Pei does host a shop in Shanghai, but that is themed Chinese wedding dresses that are demi-couture, so they are more accessible to the consumers.

In her last gala, she had gowns such as an immaculately constructed dark fairy tale of dragon manes, impossibly high

wedges, vertiginous headpieces, and ballet dancers, all under the rubric “Legend of the Dragon,” and all slowly paced, shown one at a time. With arguably her country’s most high-wattage client list, the Guo pei brand in many ways represents China’s new Gilded Age.

Mybeloved

Daniella Lopez

shanghai

Shanghai has always been a fascinating international city since globalization. People from across the globe add their own shade of colour to the city to create a dynamic and exciting environment for both residences and visitors alike. NOW Travel Asia had a chance to talk

to Daniella Lopez. who was more than happy to share her wonderful shanghai experience.

What made you move to Shanghai?

When I finished my undergraduate, I wasn’t sure if I want to stay in USA. I’ve never been to Asia before, and although I’d love to go to South America, the opportunity didn’t seem as open and exciting as in Asia. It seemed like a natural choice to come for a visit. I fell in love with Shanghai when I came and it was an easy choice to stay.

Why Shanghai?

Shanghai is a very vibrant international city. There is so much going on. I see changes yearto-year – more businesses are moving in, exciting brands come in, and even people dynamic has changed. When I first move in, a lot of my friends were German, now I have British, Italian, French, and a lot of Chinese friends. Every day is different here.

What was your perception about Shanghai before you came?

I had no idea what to expect before I came. From things I’ve heard about China, my expectations were low and I was opened for an adventure. I’d heard that China is becoming a center stage and that interested me. I didn’t know it’d be as amazing as it is here. It’s a wonderful city to live in.

How different is the lifestyle in Shanghai compared to USA?

It’s very different. The daily life is different. Life could become quite repetitive, even in big cities in USA. But in Shanghai that doesn’t happen. My working life and personal life is different every day. I never know what to expect. I could be opening a calendar on a Monday and won’t have many plans, and I might think “Oh, it’ll be an easy week”. But suddenly by that Monday afternoon or Tuesday, I’d already have a million engagements with friends that I have to turn some down. There’s just a lot happening.

Are there any places you would recommend?

One of my favourite boutiques here is Xinle Lu. It’s a great boutique that carries a lot of local as well as international brands. There always have a lot of exciting showroom openings. Napa (the place for interview) is one of my favourite places. The wine is excellent and they’re happy to recommend. I also like to go to El Coctel. They have wonderful cocktail and very creative set menu with delicious oyster and popcorn.

I like to do Yoga at Body & Soul Yoga. As far as restaurant goes, I like to go to Capo and Madison. Chefs there are amazing and staffs remember your name when you come in. Mary Ching shoes are beautiful. Alison, the designer, designs very gorgeous shoes. She’s based in Shanghai and she creates modern shoes with a touch of her Chinese heritage.

Gili Islands, the Spirit of Tropical Ocean

In the middle of the vast ocean off the shore of Indonesia, between the majestic Indian Ocean and the great Pacific Ocean,is an em-

pire of 17,500 islands, half of which still unexplored. Endless adventure

await on the archipelago and the mysterious sea

around them. While countless species call the islands and the surrounding sea home, long stretch of white beaches and the aesthetic tropical cli mate make them very attractive for a tropical experience.

G

ili Islands are only little marks on the world map, but they are important marks for discerning travelers. With no neon light district or modern lifestyle, Gili islands are some of the most virgin islands in Indonesia and a heaven those who really want to be with the spirit of the tropical ocean.

The sound of the reving engine roars constantly, pushing the old wooden boat forward through the calm sea and leaving white foam behind in its trail. I was in the middle of the sea, heading to Gili islands, together with friends, foreign travelers, and the locals. It’s hard to believe that 7 hours ago I was still chilling with sea and rice terrace views in Bali. Then all of the sudden, I was on a 4 hour ferry ride from Padang Bai to Lombok, a large island east of Pandang Bai and full of volcanoes and lush rain forest, but my route did not end there. After arriving on Senggigi pier, we caught a van to Bangsal pier before departing on a wooden boat to our destination, Gili islands. The distance traveled and different transportations we took to reach Gili islands actually gave the impression

104

nowtravelasia.com January/February 2014

of trying to reach a piece of heaven on the silver lining at the end of the sea. And why we had to do it if it was so troublesome? Well, the answer was waiting to be discovered on the islands. The colour of the ocean turned from deep blue to lighter shades as we approach Gili Meno, one of the 3 Gili islands. “Wow!” was our first and only impression on the tiny island in the middle of endless sea. The long stretch of white beach lined with lush greenery in the background was an unforgettable scene. It’s quite surprising that Indonesia has a white sand beach this beautiful, since most of Indonesian beaches are tinted grey or black by volcanos. We landed on a foot deep of water and excitedly carried our bags through the soft powdery beach. The afternoon sun shined on the sparling sea while a refreshing breeze blew softly on she-oak. The view, the surroundings, and the atmosphere were too hard to resist. Some of us, including me, ran for the sea and jumped in like kids. Here, we let the nature and instinct took over and let ourselves free from all the worries of the modern world.

105

nowtravelasia.com January/February 2014

106

nowtravelasia.com January/February 2014

There aren’t much accommodation options on Gili Meno. While most hotels are on the east side of the island, hotels on the west side are ideal if you love extreme privacy and tranquility. After a fun dip in the crystal clear sea, we surveyed the island for available rooms. We were surprised that so many rooms were available. According to a ferry staff we met, Gili is still recovering from the Bali bombing incident. Less tourists come to Lombok and Gili, causing hotels to shut down, and those who are trying to survive are run by locals who’ve lived here for generations. We found a little cozy bungalow about 200 meters from where we set foot on this beautiful island. The simple thatched roof bungalow faces the panoramic turquoise sea view and minimally furnished with a bed, mosquito net, a ceiling fan, and a bathroom. Since our trip was to be with the nature, all modern items like air-conditioner, TV, or a refrigerator were unnecessary – we just want to enjoy the sea! Gili Meno is one of the 3 small islands located 20 minutes west of Lombok. Another 2 amazing islands are called Gili Air and Gili Trawangan. Gili Meno is in the middle of the 2 bigger islands, but it has the most tranquil island with the best beaches and most natural surroundings. While Gili Air is a medium size island in the east without many residences, Gili Trawangan is the biggest of the 3 islands, and it is where the nightlife, boutique hotels, and modern lifestyle are. A small chat with a local about the name of each island revealed a very simple meaning of each island; Gili Meno means “Just like that” or simply “no changes - how it was before is how it is now”, Gili Air means “water” because the island has a lot of fresh water, and Gili Trawangan means “cave” as there is a huge cave on the island. Looking at the map of Indonesia, Gili islands are a part of a larger archipelago called Nusa Tenggara in the east of Bali. Further east of Nusa Tenggara are East Timor and Papua New Guinea, and Australia to the south. Only a few Chinese and Arabian traders would sail through Nusa Tenggara in the 15th century. But as of the 17th century, Nusa Tenggara became an important archipelago when the Dutch colonized the area for its natural resources. Nusa Tenggara is also a home of Komodo dragons, the largest lizard on Earth, that live only on Rinca Island and Labuanbajo Island. Unfortunately, we did not have time to take an overnight ferry to get there.

Back on Gili Meno, a sunny afternoon turned to a calming evening as the sun slowly left the sky. We took a shower after an exhausting, but fun day when we heard the sound walking sound and a small bell ringing. A horse carriage casually ran past us with a tourist couple onboard. The driver was in the front, holding a small horse whip while the horse was slowly pulling the carriage to the rhythmic sound of its walk and the bell on its neck. We were amazed by the fact that all 3 Gili islands don’t have a single car or motorbike! The people here use horse carriage or bicycle to get around. It strongly paints the simple life of the people living in the same world where elevated trains, subways, or even rockets to Mars exist. Beside boat engine, you won’t hear a single car or motorbike engine while spending time at these peaceful islands. Dinner was impressively fresh seafood. Grilled fish, deep fried fish with garlic, and omelet were on the menu along with steamed rice. However, there was one downside; mosquitos were a real problem as it got darker. So, don’t forget to take mosquito repellent or wear long sleeve shirt or long pants.

The next day began with a loud ring from my alarm clock. It was 6 AM and I planned to capture the scene of a beautiful sunrise. I quickly jumped out of bed, took my camera, and went out to the beach. Unfortunately, the sun had already risen a little, but the early morning atmosphere at Gili Meno completely enhanced the feeling of being one with the sand, the sea, and the sky. The sea in between the main land and the island distanced us for modernity and allowed the peaceful beat of nature to take us away. After a quick breakfast, we took a boat ride out to the other 2 sister islands, Gili Air and Gili trawangan. The morning sky and sea were incredibly clear and calm, a perfect a for snorkeling and chilling. The boat we took is called a “Bangka” or “Outrigger Canoe”. This type of boat is widely used in Indonesia since the sea around Indonesia is quite rough and the wings help balancing the boat on the rough sea. The Bangka we took was very well equipped with a high power engine and a roof to take tourists from islands to islands. The captain said, “We’re going to the turtle wall. You will see many turtles come very close!” as we left the shallow water of Gili Meno. Twenty miniutes later, we

107

were in the middle of sparkling turquoise sea about 3 meters deep. From up above, we looked through the crystal clear water to see the colourful corals dance to the water current and small fishes playing hide and seek. A few minutes later, we were all in the water with a snorkel each, leaving the captain alone on the Bangka. Diving under the water transported us into a different world. It was the world of serenity with the sunlight beaming down onto lively coral and painted a colourful scene. It was amazing to see how tiny organism took tens, or even hundreds of years to grow into a beautiful coral, and it was even more astonishing to see so many different corals here, from Staghorn coral, plate coral, to brain coral. Corals weren’t the only attractions, yellow, orange, and white feather starfishes stalked the corals while cleaning wrasse, parrot fish, butterfly fish, bull fish and little fishes swam in groups like best friends. Suddenly we saw 2 creatures slowly floated up to the surface from the depth. They were Hawksbill Turtles! It was the first time I saw actual sea turtles. And since I can’t scuba dive and turtles are quite hard to find, seeing a turtle over a meter long this close was special memorable moment. Since the area is a popular snorkeling spot, the turtles seemed very friendly to us. The way they swam through water looked more like they were flapping their wings and fly around. To our luck, one of the turtles began rising up to the surface where we were observing them. Unfortunately, the boat boy tried to show off his skill by swimming closer to the turtle and touch it. As anyone would’ve guessed, the turtle got scared and quickly dived back into the depth! After a short underwater experience with the turtles, the Bangka pulled over at Gili Trawangan, the big sister of Gili islands. Contrasting the very calm and quiet Gili Meno, Gili Trawangan was full of people and shops. But if you exclude the restaurants, diving shops, souvenir shops, and bars for a moment, Gili Trawangan does have beautiful white sand beach, clear water, and friendly locals just like the other 2 sister islands. We stopped at Gili Trawangan just for lunch before continuing on to our next destination, Gili Air. The distance between the 2 islands was quite long, but the scenery along the way was quite spectacular. Before reaching Gili Air, our Bangka captain at our second snorkeling spot to see “Giant

Clam. I was stunned the moment I jumped down and saw what was down there. Half of the corals were broken from explosives used in fishing while many were bleached as sea temperature increased by El Nino phenomenon. Fortunately, the remaining corals were full of life. A family of clownfish swam in and out of its anemone home. Next to it is an area full of giant clams, but they were smaller than giant clams near Koh Chang, Thailand. I believe that there were huge giant clams here in the past, but they all must have been collected and sold. The atmosphere on Gili Air is somewhat in between Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan. It is peaceful, yet lively. The exciting eventful day ended as we pulled into Gili Meno. We took a refreshing shower and pampered ourselves to a dinner feast for traveling far across the water to really be with the nature. While large plate of grilled prawns and steamed rice were being served, I was looking back through the memory of unforgettable pictures of the 2 turtles, crystal clear water, the clownfish, and the simple life of Gili islands. And as I leave on a ferry, the experience will forever be in my memory, and I will definitely return here again someday.

Best season: The weather is best in April – October when the sea is quite calm and there will be less rain. How to go: From Bali, catch a 4 hours ferry ride to Lombok, followed by an hour drive up north to catch a boat to Gili islands (30 minutes). Where to stay: Gili Meno, Gili Air and Gili Trawangan offer quite a lot of accommodation options such as Kontigi Cottages, Malias Child Bungalows, Sunset Gecko, Good Heart Meno, etc. You can reserve a room at www.giliparadise.com. You can also hire a Bangka with a driver for a day to go from island to island. Info: www.gili-fastboat.com, http://wikitravel.org/ en/Gili_Islands

of Winter

“Reading a thousand books is incomparable to a mile of new journey” is a Chinese saying I came across in a book. I put down the book with a glow of inspiration in my heart. I was surprised how a short sentence can be so powerful and inspiring. It’s been a while since I’ve visited China. It’s thousands of miles away but anything is not too far if your heart desires it, and before I knew it, I

flew across all those miles to begin a new winter journey.

115

Xiling Ski Resort is the mark on my map. Firstly, I was intrigued to experience the highest ski resort in the whole of China. Secondly, the price is affordable for my budget. After checking the price online, I didn’t waste another minute to invite a close friend, book a flight, reserve a room, pack my bag, and fly off to the chilling winter adventure!

Three hours after lifting off at Suwanabhumi Airport (Thailand), we arrived in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province in Southwest China. The temperature in the city was around 10 oC and I was very exciting to see how cold Xiling Ski Resort is! Beside keeping warm, another important thing to do after arrival was syncing the watch to the local time. We traveled by bus from Chengdu to Xiling mountain ranges. There’s a local joke say, “You are very lucky if you see a pregnant woman walking a dog in a sunny day in Chengdu.” Since Chinese government enforced the

The average low temperature during Summer is around 25 oC and the ice on the high mountain begins to melt, forming sparkling creeks and waterfalls. Life flourishes until Winter returns in November when the large blanket of white snow covers the whole mountain ranges. With the average of 60 cm of snowfall, people come here to enjoy the wonder of winter and ski on one of the best skiing spots in China. We switched from the bus to a cable car that would take us up to the 8 square kilometers ski field 2,200 meters above sea level. Xiling is at the same height as the Alps and it is dubbed as the “Oriental Alps”. Before we board the cable car, we had some time to shop for ski gloves, fashion beanies, colourful scarfs, and snow boots. Shopping was fun but bargaining was a little problem because of the language barrier. Luckily we brought a calculator, which solved the communication problem. But for the bargaining side, we tried using and our Siamese friendly smiles and all the tactics we know, but shopkeepers just wouldn’t give in to them. After a small bargaining battle, I bought a boot for 300 Baht ($US 10) because I knew that the shoes I brought with me would not protect me from the snow. The cable car took us 3,000 meters from the entrance to the hotel up top. According to a board at the entrance, the cable car here uses the same standard as European ones. The cable car carries 6 people in it and we can see 360o view through the clear window around the car. As the car got higher, I was quite scare by the blowing wind which caused the car to wobble a little. The scenery around us was infinitely white and we felt so tiny and powerless compared to the surrounding nature.

one child policy because of the overwhelming population, you would rarely see a pregnant woman. As for the dog and the sun, locals usually joke that dogs would bark at the sun because they’ve never seen it. This is because Chengdu gets as little as 75 sunny days in a year. For me, that explains why Chengdu women are so bright and white. Xiling Ski Resort sits 95 kilometers, or a 2 hours drive, away from Chengdu. The 8 square kilometers resort was mostly covered in white snow. We can see Daxuetang mountain majestically standing 5,364 meters above sea level from the resort. The mountain ranges attract visitors all year round to experience the beautiful valley, forest, creeks, and waterfalls hidden throughout the land. During Spring time, or end of March, Xiling would have a perfect temperature, in contrast to the painfully cold winter. The ranges would be filled with warm sunshine, greeneries, and flowers, especially Azalea which is a close relative to Rhododendron. Colourful shades from bright red, pink, orange, yellow, and white cover the whole ranges from March through to August – a picture perfect scenery.

The 20 minutes cable car ride was connected by another bus ride to the hotel. The temperature was dropping quickly when we arrived at the hotel around 6 PM. The serene white scenery began to fade away with the setting sun. It was a memorable picture completed with a light snow fall. The temperature on the resort ranges between -10 oC to 10 oC, and for us tropical weather people, this was a literally shaking experience! Getting up in the morning was extra difficult as the morning chill made us wanting to keep curling under the blanket. But once we got up to the wonderful view, we forgot how cold it was. We were focused on capturing the picture of the extraordinary landscape. The trees around the hotel stood leafless to get through the long winter. The small tree branches were covered and it looked like someone had dressed them up with cotton, but once I tried to touch it, it melted away like magic. After a warm breakfast, we took a 10 minute walk to the ski and activity field. Friendly looking snowmen stood guard around the area while resort staffs were keeping the snowman’s hat and the area clean. Here, a bright colour balloon caught our attention. The long queue was definitely worth the wait as the balloon ascended to the clear sky, flying us up to the unforgettable panoramic view in the air. You don’t have to be scare of drifting away in the balloon because it’s attached to the ground by strong cables, so the balloon would stop at the preset height and return safely to the same spot. Our fingers were exhausted after a photo shooting frenzy and it’s time for the main activity – skiing! Being born and raised in a tropical country, skiing is unnatural for us. Fortunately, ski instructors are available. Skiing seemed easy from the brochure I read, but actually doing it was a whole different

story. After tens, if not hundreds, of falls later, you may think that I would be quite familiar with the basics, but it was the contrary! Let alone turning left and right, balancing and going straight was a monumental task for me, and braking was simply falling on my bottom! While practicing, the instructor told us that skiing in Xiling is possible in other season as well. The ski field would turn to a vast 500,000 square meters grass field, allowing ski fanatics and tourists to ski on grass or what they call “Grass Ski”. However, you’d need a grass ski motor or a grass hovercraft to enjoy it. Well, after a fail attempt at skiing on snow, I might come back for a rematch with grass ski. Knowing when to quit after so many fail attempts is a virtue, so I asked to take picture with my patient instructor before saying a happy good bye. My next challenge was “Snake Sledge” which cost 10 Yuan (50 Baht) per round. Snake Sledge is an individual sledge linked together to form a long sledge before sliding down a slope like a snake. It was fun, but it would be better if my bottom was not already in pain from my version of ski braking. I wouldn’t recommend Snake Sledge for anyone with back or hip problems as sometimes it can be quite a fast and rough ride. Besides Snake Sledge, you can have a go at a snow mobile ride or a relaxing horse sledge ride that goes around the resort. Xiling Ski Resort has everything from extreme winter activities to picture perfect views for a memorable family vacation. With excellent roads, cable cars, food, accommodation, and more than 90,000 visitors each year, Xiling Ski Resort lives up to the title, “The best ski resort in China!” We stumbled across a shop with a seducing smell that made our stomach groan. The menus were fried pork, chicken, vegetable, and “Yak”. Before we knew it, our Yuan was flying out of the pocket and I was holding 2 sticks of fried Yak and a cob of corn in my hands. Yak meat was surprisingly tasty and the hot corn was heavenly delicious in freezing weather. With a full stomach, I was ready to burn the energy on creating a snowman and snow fight! After getting our hands frozen and a couple of snowballs thrown, we took a photo of our masterpiece and began walking back to the hotel.

Although the trip lasted only a couple of days, it was a very impressive trip for a tropical person like me. I kept recalling the trip during my flight back to Thailand. It opened a new world for me and broadened my experience beyond the boarder. The people, the vast blanket of white snow, and the freezing breeze will always be in my memory.

Best time to go: December - March How to go: 2 hours bus ride from Chengdu, follow by 20 minutes cable car and a short bus ride to the resort. Where to stay: There are 2 hotel options; Sakura hotel at the base of the mountain and Azalea Holiday Hotel (Dujuan Holiday Hotel) on the mountain. Both can be booked by travel agents in China. What to eat: Most of the food are Chinese food, from rice dishes to noodle dishes. You can pack your own supplies but I would recommend you to try local food. Get to Know

the Thailand – Laos – China route

B

efore starting the car and head out on a journey, let’s get to know Route R3A first. Route R3A starts at Chiangkong (Chiangrai, Thailand) cuts through Laos via Huay Sai (Borkaew) and Borten (Luang Namtha) and ends in Chiangrueng, Kunming. If you

126

nowtravelasia.com January/February 2014

start the trip from Bangkok, it’d be a 1,800 km drive to Kunming, but we took a little shortcut through the air and landed in Chiangrai before making our way to Chiangkong. Luang Namtha, Laos, is our des-

tination for this trip, and it lies in the North West of the country, with China to the North and Myanmar to the West.

The Road to Discovery

Chiangkong – Huay Sai – Vieng Phoukha – Luang Namtha

A

fter all immigration documents were approved, we didn’t hesitate to catch a boat to the other side. It took only 5 minutes for us to reach Huay Sai immigration checkpoint where our journey to Luang Namtha began. A van took us deftly along the curvy road up the mountains. The road was quite unfamiliar as Laos drives in the right lane, but the unfamiliarity was soon entirely overcome by view of villages and deep valleys along the route. Borkaew – Luang Namtha is around 225 km apart. Normally it would only take around 2 hours on

128

nowtravelasia.com January/February 2014

a straight road, but the ride actually took 4 hours due to the twists and turns. Although I fell asleep from time to time, I was always amazed by the lush valley and the traditional life of the people every time I looked outside the windows. Farmers drying their produces on the side of the road, children playing in group, old man sitting and smoking on his porch, and vast rice paddies with stacks of straw and scarecrows were quite the fascinating scenes that added milestones to this trip.

The Charming Mix of Culture Luang Namtha

L

uang Namtha sits in a strategic location on Route R3A. It’s a fantastic traveler pit-stop en route to China or Borkaew with a range of hotels and guesthouses. We stayed at Royal Hotel Luang Namtha which is conveniently close to the fresh market. Luang Namtha was once a part of Tai Lue kingdom, but it now home of varieties of tribes. The fresh market is where the mixture of culture is vividly portrayed as there are unusual food like rattan shoots, squirrels, bats, and wild animals and plants in every corner of the market. Strolling through the market, we noticed that most of the precooked food usually had prickled vegetable in them, and Pho or soup noodle is the popular break-

fast here. I came across an amazingly fragrant sweet called “Khao mai” which is freshly cooked rice sprinkled with sugar and wrapped in banana leaf. The night market is also within a walking distance from the hotel, and it is where you can truly experience the taste of Luang Namtha. “Nam Khao”, a pork and wood ear mushroom stuffing wrapped in soft rice paper and dipped in a sweet and sour and spicy dipping, was a dish I particularly like. Other ‘not to miss’ food are “Khao soi hang” (dry egg noodle) and, of course, “Som Tum”. There are more local food than you could taste in a day, but if you aren’t an adventurous foodie, Lu

129

nowtravelasia.com January/February 2014

ang Namtha also has other restaurants for tourists and R3A travelers like “Krua Thai” restaurant. As the name states, Krua Thai serves Thai food, with additional breakfast and coffee menus. The back of the restaurant opens up to the infinite view of rice paddies and mountains miles away, and the restaurant also has an air-conditioned room for a banquet as well. Before saying goodbye to the last light of the day, we drove up the hill to worship “Phrathat Meechai”, locally know as “Phrathat Samakeechai” – the monument for the unity of 3 groups of Laotian (Lao Loum, Lao Theung, and Lao Soung). The monument was built to display the unity of 3 different

130

nowtravelasia.com January/February 2014

cultures living harmoniously as one. Three sculptures, each wears the distinctive outfit of each culture, welcomes everyone at the entrance where every tourists must come to experience the spectacular view of Luang Namtha from high up.

Luang Namtha is a very peaceful city to visit. It glows with pure nature and traditional life of the people. As for our road trip, the highlight wasn’t just at the destination. Our experience started when the wheel started turning. Every scenes along the way, no matter big or small, are memorable ones. I tried to catch every wonderful detail as much as I can, and sometimes I just didn’t even want to reach the destination at all.

Tips 1. Thai passport lets you travel anywhere in Laos for 30 days. 2. If you don’t have a passport, you can get a temporary border pass at Chiangkong district office for 30 Baht. The pass allows you to stay in Laos for 3 days and 2 nights, but only in a given districts only.
