MATTEL HAS INTRODUCED AN AI VOICE-ACTIVATED DEVICE MADE SPECIFICALLY TO RECOGNIZE THE TONES OF A CHILD Mattel’s Aristotle is like a smart baby monitor and Amazon Echo rolled into one. The smart voice-activated speaker works with a companion camera and is intended to help with tasks like soothing a crying baby, buying more diapers, encouraging kids to mind their manners, or helping them learn a foreign language. Aristotle is a friendly-looking artificial intelligence device that’s kid-safe. It’s red and white, rather than the sleek black of the Amazon Echo, making it more tailored for a nursery. It has a Wi-Fi enabled camera that can detect motion and identify objects. Parents can watch the video feed on their smartphones from another room, and even utter commands to help calm a crying or scared child.

THINGS TO DO

T

ravelling to Leh-Ladakh is one of the most cherished dreams for many. Experiencing the sights of vast and desolate expanse of hills and valleys combined with the thrilling experience of enduring the harsh climate is one of its kind adventure. While some people suggest summers to be the best time to visit the place when the weather is most exciting and amiable, when the snow has melted and there is a buzz of activity with the colorful and vibrant Hemis Festival taking place. On the other hand, according to some, winters have their own charm when only a handful of travelers visit the place and the site is all covered with snow and the views are most breathtaking. This also the time when one of the most adventurous treks of the world, the ChadarTrek, over the majestic and frozen Zanskar River is underway. But nevertheless, each time of the year has its own allure and deciding between the best times to visit the place often becomes confusing.

MUST KNOW Summer is the best time to visit Leh Ladakh is between June and September. Maximum temperature in summer generally reaches about 30 degrees Celsius. However, winters are not recommended to consider, because thick snow sheets lead to inaccessibility of roads.

WHERE TO STAY Ladakh offers accomodation from family-run establishments to guest houses to budget hotels and rooms in monasteries that are suitable to every budget. However, Leh offers more options for accommodation ranging from guest houses in Changsva to budget hotels near the Central Library and luxury hotels on Old Sheynam Road.

HOW TO GET THERE You can also hire cars, jeeps or taxis in Srinagar. If traveling in groups, you can rent deluxe buses for Leh, Kargil or Padum (Zanskar) from J & K SRTC at Srinagar. Manali-Leh road of 473 kms, since 1989 has been another route to Ladakh. This route is open from mid-June to early October.

Lush forests abound with more than 100 species of birds. It is a truly exotic destination.

THINGS TO DO

T

here are plenty of things to do in El Nido to fill a trip itinerary for more than a week exploring all that El Nido has to offer. The islands of El Nido are some of the most beautiful and enchanting in the entire world. Here is a list of the top activities in El Nido, Palawan, Philippines.

Swim through the hole to secret beach Secret beach is a pristine piece of sand hidden from sight by large limestone cliffs on all sides. Once inside it feels like you are the only people on the planet. Secret beach is one of the best things to see in El Nido hands down.

Visit snake island This island is another great example of the beauty of El Nido. What makes snake island

so special isn’t necessarily the island itself, but the strip of sand leading up to it. When the tides are right snake island has a thin strip of sand wiggling its way through the bay, pointing right at snake island. Snake Island is the top thing to do on the El Nido.

Diving in EL Nido El Nido is home to over 30 dive sites with frequent trips to about 10 depending on the tides and conditions. The Bacuit Bay is home to a wide range of beautiful sea life and interesting structural formations.

Visit The Matinloc Shrine An abandoned shrine to the Virgin Mary that seems a bit out of place in the middle of this tropical paradise. Also, on the island with the shrine are some amazing lookouts. A quick hike up the rocks brings you to a viewpoint where you can see the entire channel running between the small islands.

HOW TO GET THERE There are 3 ways to travel to El Nido: Air, boat, or land. The traveler can take a bus or van from Puerto Princesa to El Nido, which 137 miles and took 6 -8 hours and cost around 480 P or $15 USD.

WHERE TO STAY There are tons of hotels in El Nido, something for everyone’s budget. Rooms are becoming more and more available to book online. For the price beachside room in EL Nido around 2200-4000PHP and 15,000PHP for EL Nido over the water bungalow room. NOW TRAVEL ASIA 55 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

The endangered Crown Cranes and Black Beaked Gulls call this place home. Not only is the red beach beautiful, it’s also one of the most unique habitats in the world. Panjin Red Beach lies on the Shuangtaizi River estuary, just outside of Panjin City. The river isn’t your typical freshwater river. The water has a high saline content and very high alkaline levels. Typically, this leads to plants being unable to grow in the water or on the shore. However, there is a very special plant that has adapted to the conditions of the river and thrives in this environment. Sueda, or seablite, is a kind of succulent that only grows in the type of habitat found along the river. The sueda changes with the seasons. During the spring and summer months, the seablite is a typical green color. In the fall, it turns this deep bright red color as far as the eye can see. The seablite shifts to purple in the winter as it dies and then is reborn in the spring to start the cycle over again.

Snorkellers can observe many of these species from above, too, with many reefs easily accessible from the beach.

THE TRAIL OF KARAKORUM C HI NA TO PA K I S TA N B O R D E R

The Karakoram Highway is said to be the highest paved international road in the world, but at its peak at the China-Pakistan border it is only paved on the Chinese side. It’s the road to paradise if you like exploring the mountains, that is. It’s regarded as one of the world’s hardest alpine climbs.

The road is one of the scariest and hair raising jeep trip in the world. The route of the KKH traces one of the many paths of the ancient Silk Road. The road has a length of 1,300 km with Pakistan 887 km and China 413 km. It was started in 1959 and was completed in 1986 after 27 years of construction.

The Karakoram Highway can be an incredible journey, as long as you take the necessary precautions and heed weather warnings. Much of the road trip is driven through remote lands, so be sure that your vehicle has passed all of its inspections and is well-equipped. Bring spare tires, extra gasoline, and a radio for additional safety. As always, check the forecasts, since the conditions on this highway can become dangerous very quickly. Many areas are prone to floods and landslides, for example, so do not attempt this road with a car that does not perform well in the elements. If you’re renting a vehicle, you’ll want to splurge on four-wheel or all-wheel drive. Although the KKH officially begins in Rawalpindi, Pakistan the most popular starting point on the KKH is Gilgit, one of the larger mountain towns in North Pakistan. It’s accessible by a short flight from the Pakistani capital, Islamabad. From here, the road through the Hunza Valley is nothing short of breathtaking, with spectacular views of the snowcapped peaks that guard the region. Pull over in Karimabad which overlooks the entire valley and is known for its exceptionally warm and welcoming locals. 74 NOW TRAVEL ASIA NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

MUST KNOW 810 Pakistani and 82 Chinese workers lost their lives, mostly in landslides and falls, while building the highway.

The next stop along the highway is Attabad Lake, where the only way to cross is by boat. The impossibly blue lake didn’t even exist until a massive landslide in 2010 formed a natural dam. After passing through the gorgeous Cathedral Ridge in Passu, you’ll want to stop next at the Baba Ghundi Ziarat. This popular Sufi shrine rises from the meadows in striking white contrast. Next, you’ll drive through the Khunjerab National Park where you will have to pay an entrance fee. Look out for rare Himalayan ibex and elusive snow leopards. From here, you’ll cross the border into China through an imposing stone gate. Note that you’ll be required to go through customs, which can be quite time-consuming. he Catalonian capital greets the new millennium with a cultural and industrial rebirth comparable only to the late-19thcentury Renaixença (Renaissance) that filled the city with its flamboyant Moderniste buildings. An exuberant sense of style - from hip new fashions to cutting-edge interior design, to the extravagant visions of star-status Postmodern architects gives Barcelona a vibe like no other in the world. Barcelona is Spain’s mostvisited city, and it’s no wonder: it’s a 2,000-year-old master of the art of perpetual novelty. The infinite variety of street life, the nooks and crannies of the medieval Barri Gòtic, the ceramic tile and stained glass of Art Nouveau facades, the art and music, the throb of street life, the food - one way or another, Barcelona will find a way to get your full attention.

Tip July and August can get quite hot and humid, so the best time to go is early summer (May-June) and fall (September-October), when it’s pleasant and mild.

The Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic) The most visited, and oldest, neighborhood of Barcelona is called the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic) and it contains many of the top attractions, including the Cathedral of Barcelona and a handful of Roman ruins. The beautiful neighborhood known as the Gothic Quarter is so called because it used to be the Roman village and thus has some remnants of its glorious past. These days because of the constant modernization it is easy to spot an ancient building right next to one built in the 90s. It is this mix of old and new that brings people from all over the world to stay in the Gothic Quarter. The Gothic quarter has many peaceful squares (plaças) where you can relax and enjoy your surroundings. However one of the main attractions, right in the heart of

the district is the huge Cathedral which has a stunning courtyard full of plants and oddly, geese. You will be spoilt for choice of restaurants and bars, especially around Plaça Reial which is always full day and night. The night-life in the Gothic Quarter is lively to say the least and you will always find somewhere to have a drink or a dance. Calle Ferran, which is just to one side of Plaça Reial and leads up to Plaça Sant Jaume with its imposing government buildings is also good for bars and cafes. Shopping is also amazing in the Gothic Quarter, from the more commercial area of Calle Portal de L’Angel to all the little boutiques on Calle Avinyo. Make sure you walk around to experience all you can, the Gothic Quarter is perfect for that afternoon stroll.

NOW TRAVEL ASIA 89 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

Las Ramblas The second neighborhood (which is technically part of the Gothic Quarter but has its own personality) is Las Ramblas— which is a pedestrian-only street (and surrounding area) lined with shops, chain stores, tacky tourist stalls, cafes, and restaurants. This is the most visited tourist spot in Barcelona, so it’s buzzing all day and night. It’s also one of the biggest pickpocket hotspots in Europe, so be extra vigilant. The cafes and restaurants are super overpriced, so wander off Las Ramblas for better prices. Additionally, La Boqueria Market is a massive indoor market located off Las Ramblas, and it’s been rated the best market in the world. It’s a massive tourist draw, so it’s super busy, but it’s still a nice experience. If you want to escape the tourist hoards, head to Plaça Reial— which is a beautiful square that’s just off Las Ramblas.

El Born

El Raval

The most trendy and artistic neighborhood in Barcelona. In addition to its tapas bars, restaurants, avant-garde galleries, cool cafes, and vintage shops, this neighborhood is the home of the impressive Church of Santa Maria del Mar and the excellent Santa Caterina Market (which has an amazing Gaudí-esque roof). It’s also where you’ll find a lot of Barcelona’s famous nightlife, so you’ll find yourself here often.

The one of the largest and the most ethnically diverse neighborhood in Barcelona. It’s more gritty than other parts of the city, so don’t be surprised if you see prostitutes in some parts, but the neighborhood is currently in the midst of rapid gentrification. It’s popular with young, hip folks, and there are new and interesting businesses, boutiques, thrift stores, bars, and restaurants opening all the time — it certainly always has something going on.

L’Eixample

Gràcia

The largest neighborhood in Barcelona, and it’s home to many of the city’s most famous architectural highlights — including La Sagrada Familia. Eixample is popular with the locals because it’s a lively neighborhood without being as densely populated as the city center. Because of its size, you’ll also find that different parts of the neighborhood have their own personalities. 90 NOW TRAVEL ASIA NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

WE KNOW THAT YOU HAVE BEEN IN HOSPITALITY BUSINESS FOR LONG TIME, COULD YOU PLEASE TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND AND HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR ACHIEVEMENT? “Only 43 years! That makes me look very old” first expression from one of the very old hand Thai hotelier, Mr. Danai Wansom. “It was fortunate that I started my career with Hyatt International in 1974. The Hyatt chain came to Thailand in 1973 to take over the management of the same property, “Rama Hotel Bangkok” after having operated by Hilton, the first international hotel chain in Thailand, since 1965. I rejoined the Hyatt as an opening team at Hyatt Central Plaza Bangkok and Bangkok Convention Centre, the first convention centre in Thailand, which was the largest 92 NOW TRAVEL ASIA NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

meeting venue for 3,500 delegates in 1983. The achievement in the early day, I was named Top 100 marketing personnel in Thailand in 1984. “It was during 1991 – 2001 when a corporate post overseas further highlighted my career achievements. I was then appointed by Century International Hotels as Senior Vice President for Marketing & Sales based in its corporate headquarters in Hong Kong. My 10 years with Century accelerated the rapid growth of the chain’s acquisition of properties. From merely one hotel when it was originally founded in 1991, the same year that I joined, Century grew and flourished to 26 properties in 8 countries in 5 years” “We received many marketing awards but “1996 PATA Travel Mart Professionalism Award” was the most distinction where there were over 480 other worldwide travel organizations, including all the leading brands of international hotels at

the travel trade show.” “The achievement today, with our guest satisfaction caring service, our first operating hotel, Well Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit 20, got 6 awards from its first opening year”. The revenue performance achievement towards hotel owner satisfaction, the hotel run average 85 - 90% occupancy from January till August this year.

2. WHAT DID YOU AND YOUR TEAM DO TO GAIN SUCH AN ACHIEVEMENT? WHAT ARE THE SIX AWARDS? When we started the management company, we set a very clear vision gearing for guest satisfaction. As a Thai, that’s our strength. So we set “Warm Welcome” as our service culture. All staff need to attend our orientation programs which is the first training class for all new staff. Our service concept is to focus on caring attitude and

Exclusive Interview property owner’s brand. This may help to expand the number of hotels much faster and easily to increase the quantity. It is not necessary to be in the same product line. Hotel owner who has no intention for long term deal can sign up the agreement and cancel the deal in few years and still keep the owner’s brand. I choose the classic way where the property brand is the same brand of the management company. This can demonstrate value of the management brand and owning an identity position of the property. The brand should suggest something about the product’s benefits and qualities. It should be easy to pronounce, recognize and remember. So, I come up with the name “Well” that promises a touch of lifestyle wellness for the health – conscious travellers. “Well Hotels & Resorts” is the management company brand and “Well Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit 20” is our first property brand, the hotel will be positioned with our “Well” distinct brand for unique experience to the right target group. We add “Sukhumvit 20” to identify the location because we foresee there will be more properties in Bangkok in the future.

guest expectation. We are aware that guest reviews are very important. The smart travellers today will read guest review prior to making decisions to book the hotel. We got “Certificate of Excellence” award from TripAdvisor and many thanks to all guest who put excellent review in TripAdvisor. “The other five awards are from “Guest Review Award” from Booking.com”, “Gold Circle Award” and Customer Review Award both from Agoda and “Hotels.com Loved by Guests Award”. The most prestige award is “Now Travel Asia Award for Asia’s Top Emerging Hotels in 2016.”

3. COULD YOU PLEASE TELL US ABOUT THE CONCEPT OF BRAND WELL, ABOUT WELL HOTEL BANGKOK SUKHUMVIT 20? It is challenge in getting a name out into the market as there are too many existing brands there, some management companies have more than 10 - 20 brands within the same company. In Thailand, there are also many hotel management companies set the property brand different from the company brand or just use the

I believe this will help to create an authentic and humanized marketing for the product. The development of the “Well” brand is the key element in developing the identity of the property. The concept of the brand and the hotel will be positioned as a lifestyle hotel with wellness facilities to cater to the health – loving guests through food & beverages, spa, fitness and wellness programmes. This may limit our expansion as the other hotels need to be in the same product line to use the same brand. I very much believe only the differentiation will help to create the competitive advantages.

4. IT SEEMS THAT MANY HOTELS NOW TRY TO PUT THE MAIN FOCUS ON THE CHINESE MARKET, IS THE CHINESE MARKET IMPORTANT TO YOU? Chinese market is not only important to our hotel but it is important to Thailand as a whole. Last year, Chinese visited Thailand over 8.7 million. This was almost 27% of total visitors to the country compare to all countries in European market combined was below 19%. This is not a surprise from the marketing prediction 25 year ago that the future tourism opportunity in Asia is “The expansion of Asian Travel within Asia” Total visitors to Thailand from Asia market including Chinese is now 70%. As a new hotel with 235 rooms, we need to capture group business following the classic strategy of bread and butter. That is the quickest way to build up the occupancy

base. At the same time we target the FIT market both B to B and B to C. You will be surprised to see the majority of the Chinese travelers today book hotel room from their mobile devices.

5. THERE ARE MANY HOTEL MANAGEMENT COMPANIES BOTH INTERNATIONAL, REGIONAL AND LOCAL, WHAT MAKES YOUR MANAGEMENT COMPANY AND BRAND STANDOUT FROM OTHER BIG CHAINS? All the big companies are gearing for chain expansion with variety of brands to match each product category. They all want to increase the quantity and compete for number of hotels and number of rooms. We target on different purpose, we will only focus on the hotel owners who do not want to and have no need to use the big international chain. However, we need to perform a better bottom line with a much lower cost factors. In the old days we might be concerned about distribution network etc. but today with the significant innovation of all the OTAs, we have a wealth of option with plenty marketing solution to get our property in front of worldwide potential guest. We need to prove the quality and set our vision to focus on guest satisfaction and service excellence, our mission is to drive the business achievement and to take care our hotel owner and to do so profitably. To differentiate from the big chain, we position a lifestyle product with distinct wellnessconcept to cater to health-loving guests. It is a very niche market when we target on hotel owners and hotel guests who believe passionately in well-being lifestyle travelling. We set all international hotels standards but use the strength of our “Thainess” hospitality to provide warm welcome and caring attitude to build our own Well service culture to drive direct business to the hotel.

6. ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO ADD? I am delighted to share that we recently signed a new management agreements for two properties in Pattaya, namely Well Resort Pattaya Costa Village which will be opened within the fourth quarter of this year and another boutique villa property in Jomtien. I always believe that “Small is Beautiful”. We are studying to develop another link or a brand to target small hotels. There is a big potential and a great opportunity in this category. Many young entrepreneurs want to own a small hotel and we can help them to achieve their goal with a profitable business model. NOW TRAVEL ASIA 93 NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017
