Protected is the magazine of the National Parks Association of Queensland (NPAQ). NPAQ promotes the preservation, expansion and good management of national parks in Queensland. Issue 15 of Protected magazine is themed around tropical storms and features Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island during the clean-up after Cyclone Debbie on the cover. The July-July 2017 issue delves into the impacts of Debbie on Queensland’s national parks – and the incredible efforts by QPWS rangers to reopen the majority of impacted walks and day use areas before Easter. We also look at the ecological effects of high-energy storms on Wet Tropics rainforests, using cyclones Larry and Yasi as examples, and the susceptibility of littoral forests to such severe weather events. Wooroonooran National Park, which was impacted by both Larry and Yasi, is the subject of our regular Park in Focus section.
