A St. Joseph tradition

Apple Blossom parade heads down Frederick May 5 St. Joseph News-Press

The Apple Blossom Parade rolls down Frederick Avenue beginning at 9:30 a.m. on May 5. The theme this year is “Destination St. Joseph.” Brig. Gen. Steve Cotter will serve as grand marshal for the 2012 Apple Blossom Parade. Gen. Cotter is the former commander of the 139th Airlift Wing at Rosecrans Memorial Airport. He now serves as assistant adjutant general — air, for the Missouri National Guard at the Missouri Joint Force Headquarters in Jefferson City. “With our theme encompassing the Sound of Speed Airshow International Edition, we feel that Gen. Cotter is a perfect representative,” Apple Blossom Executive Director Michelle Wolfe says. Cotter is homegrown, graduating from Missouri Western State University and focusing the majority of his career at Rosecrans. In his current role, he is responsible for strategic planning of Air National Guard operations to ensure mission viability for Missouri Air National Guard force structure. Gen. Cotter also assists the adjutant general in implementation of plans and policies affecting an airlift wing, bomb wing, air operations group, advanced airlift tactics training center, air traffic control and combat communications squadrons and other support missions and programs affecting more than 2,500 Air National Guard personnel. Gen. Cotter received his commission through the Air National Guard Academy of Military Science, Knoxville, Tenn., in 1976, followed by attendance at United States Air Force Undergraduate Pilot Training, Craig Air Force Base, Ala., receiving his United States Air Force pilot wings in June of 1977. He has served on numerous military tours and deployments, supporting airlift commitments around the world that include operations Volant Oak, Coronet Oak, Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Southern Watch, Noble Eagle and Enduring Freedom. “The choice for grand marshals was really a no-brainer, given our theme and the ties to both events,” Apple Blossom President Ken Rosenauer says. “Like most residents, we’re proud of our heritage as the home of the 139th. As St. Joseph’s favorite parade for the past 11 years, based on the Readers’ Choice Awards, the Apple Blossom is an excellent opportunity for the community to give the 139th Airlift Wing the local recognition it deserves.” Also featured in the Apple Blossom Parade will be the winners of the Apple

Something’s cooking Barbecue contest back for a sixth year By KEVIN KRAUSKOPF St. Joseph News-Press

Mmmm ... barbecue. Parade, pageant and air show notwithstanding, the sixth annual Apple Blossom Barbeque Contest is sure to draw a big crowd of its own to Civic Center Park come May 4 and 5. That’s when about 60 teams will pit their best chicken, ribs, pork and brisket against some of the best competition from the Midwest and beyond. Organizer Tom Supple says teams are coming from as far as Florida, Texas and South Dakota, hoping to earn their share of $10,000 in prize money. Just don’t waste any time getting to the barbecue festival’s kick-off event or you risk missing out. The

People’s Choice Pork Loin Competition begins at 6:30 p.m. May 4. “And that’ll go until we run out of food, Supple says. “Doesn’t take long in St. Joe. It costs $5 to sample the meats and vote on Friday night’s winner, who earns a $1,000 prize. The contest’s main event, sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, gets under way at noon May 5. A panel of certified judges will sample the teams’ chicken, ribs, pork and brisket from noon to 2 p.m. and announce their top choices at 3 p.m. Scores from the Apple Blossom Barbeque Contest help determine the Northern Missouri Grand Champion, who wins $1,500. While Supple says there’s more barbecue to go around Friday night, it’s still worth a second trip

Building a better block Downtown has special activities for Apple Blossom weekend By CLINTON THOMAS St. Joseph News-Press

Better Block St. Joseph hopes to show visitors Downtown has more than meets the eye. The event will transform the 500 block of Felix Street with facade improvements, “pop-up” businesses and street performers to cater to crowds in town May 4 and 5 for the Apple Blossom Parade, Apple Blossom Barbeque Contest and the Sound of Speed Airshow. Organizers received applications for a variety of pop-up businesses, including ones selling coffee, screen-printed T-shirts, vintage clothing, a florist, a bicycle shop, art exhibits and others. Matt Unzicker, one of the event’s organizers, says he hopes Better Block shows people the area’s potential to provide a vibrant, livable community. “I hope they can see what used to be downtown and what could be there again,” Unzicker says. Representatives from Mo-Kan Regional Council, Downtown Association, the Art Department at Missouri Western State University, business owners, city officials, downtown residents and others have worked on the project since October. Stores will be open Friday afternoon and evening and all day Saturday. Clinton Thomas can be reached at clinton.thomas@newspressnow.com. Follow him on Twitter: @SJNPThomas.
