Six good reasons for confidence

LeBlond girls boast experienced seniors ready to break into postseason play cover story By ANdRew dewITT I St. Joseph News-Press

T

he Bishop LeBlond Six has done it all for the Golden Eagles athletic programs.

The six seniors on this year’s girls’ basketball team — Jackie Ziesel, Ali Orban, Ashburn Holley, Erin Christiansen and Loree and Conner Hazelrigg — have won district titles, placed in state, led teams deep into state tournaments and performed at the highest levels of high school athletics both as individuals and teammates in everything but basketball. The Six have played AAU basketball together since they were in elementary school, save for Orban who transferred in from Texas last year. They’re not only teammates but best friends. The Six joke about the time that Ziesel, coaching at a youth basketball camp at the school, walked towards the baseline and tripped right by the gold line. Ziesel landed face first on the court in front of all of the young campers. “We still give her (a hard time) about it all the time, and we make sure she doesn’t trip over those golden lines,” Conner Hazelrigg said. The LeBlond Six just want to break the LeBlond Curse. The past three seasons, the Eagles have led by double-digits in the district championship game only to lose. Two of those losses came at the hands of Maryville, and the LeBlond Six has taken notice. Conner Hazelrigg quickly points out that Maryville lost

a strong class of seniors which included Emily Kisker and Meridee Scott from the team that reached the Class 3 state semifinals last season. LeBlond wants the pressure of being the favorite to win districts and advance in the state tournament. And, the seniors will say, if they don’t win a district title it might be the most disappointing thing for them even after all of their other athletic successes. “Why not do it together?” Loree Hazelrigg said. “It would mean a lot to us. We’re all best friends. I think our biggest goal is to win together. We can all win in our other things with our other teammates. It’d be really nice if we won it together as best friends and teammates and sisters from the beginning.” LeBlond coach Wayne Miller knows he’s been blessed by these six seniors. Miller tries to focus on the Xs and Os while the seniors know how to police themselves and provide leadership.

File photo/St. Joseph News-Press

Bishop LeBlond guard Jackie Ziesel brings the ball down the floor last year against Lafayette. Ziesel was a Class 3 all-state honoree last year and is one of the Golden Eagles’ six returning seniors for this season. “What we lack in size, we make up for it in experience and know-how,” Miller said. “They play very well together on the floor. They don’t care who scores the basketball. They’re certainly not selfish.” No one can quite pin down when the LeBlond Six started playing together, but it’s some time in elementary school. They played for the Cyclones together and participated in AAU national tournaments. “We all have great chemistry with each other,” Ziesel said.

“The way our game flows, it’s going to be fast-paced, and we’re going to score as much as we can.” The players each have their distinct personalities on and off the court. Orban is the happygo-lucky player dancing during practice. Ziesel and Conner Hazelrigg are the serious, coaches on the court and leaders who keep everyone in check. Holley gets very serious but can also be a joker. Orban jokingly calls Loree Hazelrigg the blonde of the group, and Christiansen

provides a laid-back, calming presence. “It all balances out really well,” Orban said. The LeBlond Six has spent a lifetime together. Now they’re just worried about finally winning that basketball district title. “I’ll be happy with just a district title,” Ziesel said. “We talk about it all the time. We’re going to win this year.” Andrew DeWitt can be reached at andrew.dewitt@newspressnow.com

Vertin committed to quality product By TRAVIS HARTMAN St. Joseph News-Press

File photo/St. Joseph News-Press

Bishop LeBlond guard Brooks Schoeneck goes up for a shot during a game at Plattsburg High School last year. Schoeneck expects to play a much larger role this year.

Bishop LeBlond coach Steve Vertin is undoubtedly known for his no-nonsense, old-school type of approach when it comes to coaching — an aspect the coach really feels was missing last year. “We had a sub-par year last year, and that’s on me,” Vertin said. “I didn’t prepare my guys like I should have.” After finishing 5-19 last year, it is understandable the coach believes something was missing. However, last season Vertin also served as head coach for the football team, too. Since then, LeBlond hired Tony Dudik as football coach. But Vertin won’t use that as an excuse for his basketball team having a lessthan-stellar year. That’s just not what he is about. “We got a saying around here that says, ‘Those who don’t compete, complain,’” Vertin said. “Well, we are going to compete; I don’t care how tough our schedule is.” LeBlond’s five-win season was only the second under-.500 finish in Vertin’s tenure, first since his inaugural campaign.

The Golden Eagles dealt with the loss of leading scorer Mark Nold after a season-ending suspension in early February. Senior Andrew Nellestein picked up the slack down the stretch and averaged about 20 points per game in LeBlond’s final nine contests. He earned all-city and all-Midland Empire Conference honors. The Eagles also lose the leadership of Matt and Mike Lierz. Nellestein also earned All-City and All-Conference honors. But even with the trio of seniors who finished the year, LeBlond won the fewest games in any season in Vertin’s 11 years. The Eagles expect returning senior Brooks Schoeneck to help shoulder a majority of the load offensively at the guard position. The senior averaged 4.4 points a game last year. However, more than one player on the Eagles will be expected to help fill the void. “(Schoeneck) has a good shot,” Vertin said. “He struggled defensively last year, but he is a stronger more mature senior this year.” Other seniors returning from last season are Ryley Drennen and Michael

Haynes. The pair saw significantly more time in the last nine games of the season last year. Haynes averaged 4.8 points to go along with Drennen’s one point per game during that stretch. “It remains to be seen who will step up right now,” Vertin said. “I see the seniors doing really well right now, but we got some younger guys that are really pushing our older guys.” Vertin has six seniors this year with a handful of juniors and a pair of sophomores that he expects to gain significant experience. Vertin admits he doesn’t feel pressured in winning for the upcoming season. He knows the Eagles will play tough every night, everywhere. “You can count on me because there are people counting on us,” Vertin said. “Our LeBlond community is great. They are counting on us, and our players got to understand when we come out to entertain we got to know people are counting on us. One thing for certain is that there is going to be a game and you better believe we will be playing our butts off.” Travis Hartman can be reached at travis.hartman@newspressnow.com

Central seeks to ‘Hook’ into own identity

By TRAVIS HARTMAN

because of graduation. Fox was first team all-conference, all-district, all-city and NewsPress player of the year. Steele made honorable mention all-conference. The Indians will take the court with only two seniors and only one returning from last year — senior Carson Lau, who played in 21 games last year and averaged 2.8 points a game. Hook expects Lau to significantly up his level of play as one of the most experienced players returning. “It was big, leadership-wise, losing those seven seniors, Lau said. “But we have some younger guys coming up that are talented and can help out this year. I am definitely going to have to help be a leader and play with a lot of intensity this year. Lau will also have help from senior transfer Anthony Pen-

St. Joseph News-Press

Coaches often use the term rebuilding when beginning a season, especially after losing their leading scorer, as well as a majority of players due to graduation. However, it’s not a phrase Central coach Neal Hook is comfortable using, even after finishing 618 the previous year, as he enters his 11th year as coach. “I don’t like those words rebuild, reload and all that, he said. “I think this year’s team will create their own identity, and we will see what we are made of come Dec. 3. Central opens Dec. 3 against Blue Springs. The Indians will have to do it without seven players from last season, including leading scorer Jared Fox and Keaton Steele

nington, a 6-foot-5 lefty who transferred from St. Louis last year. Due to Missouri State High School Activities Assocation regulations, Pennington had to sit out one year after transferring to a new school. With the addition of Pennington, the Indians also return 6foot-5 sophomore Shun Williams. He averaged 9.3 points and 6.4 rebounds a game which earned him all-city honors as well as honorable mention all-conference in the Suburban League Big 7. “We have enough athleticism down low this year that we can go outside, too, because of the threat down low, Hook said. “In the past, we were undersized. Lau admits that the presence of two 6-foot-5 guys down low will be big and should help Central pull in some rebounds which the Indians lacked last year.

Sunday, November 28, 2010

Not only are the two big men going to be a big presence in the rebounding game but Hook and Lau believe the two big men add mobility and athleticism to the team. “It is going to help even more that they both are mobile and can run the court with our guards, too, Lau said. Even though Hook lost half his team to graduation, he admits that the uncertainty of his team is really the excitement right now. “I really hope the success they had in football this year will carry over to basketball as well, Hook said. “With the momentum of the football team doing good I think the transition to the basketball file photo/St. Joseph News-Press court will be much better. Central boys basketball coach Neal Hook paces the floor in the second half last Travis Hartman can be reached year against Oak Park during the Class 5 at travis.hartman@newspressnow.com District 16 tournament.

Indians’ Kelley juggling guard-heavy rotation after losing six key seniors By ANDREW DEWITT St. Joseph News-Press

If Central girls basketball coach Kevin Kelley is juggling basketballs on the bench this year, don’t be too surprised. After losing six seniors last year, Kelley will spend most of this season trying to find the right combination of girls to produce another winning squad. Gone are Ravene Davis, Alexis Bates, Abby Eagleburger, Kaitlin Siela, Jenna Drost and Ashley Anderson, who all saw playing time last season. Central features enough guards to fill two rosters, which is why Kelley will spend so much time in December and even part of January trying to find the right combination of players.

“We’re going to do some different things to try and work everybody in, Kelley said. Only seniors Kari Schram and Reid Brown provide an inside presence. Brown’s been known to get in foul trouble, which could have Kelley struggling to find inside help. Junior Amber Chivington might be able to add some size down low, but she’s not a true post player. “Reid and I talked, and we said we’re going to have to play a lot of minutes this year, Schram said. “We’re getting in the best condition we’ve been in so far so we can play a lot. Two seniors moved into the school, but both are guards, compounding the guard problems.

file photo/St. Joseph News-Press

Central forward Kari Schram looks to pass against Park Hill during last year’s Class 5 District 16 tournament at Central High School. Ali Howat moved back to Central after playing a year at Staley. Chelsea Nichols moved to St. Joseph from Louisiana, Mo., which adds even more depth to the guard position even though Central doesn’t necessarily need it.

“We could use four guards depending on the situation, Kelley said. The Indians lost to Liberty in the district championship game last year. That’s why Kelley will be juggling his lineup all season during the tough

Suburban Conference schedule. The Indians move from the largest classification to the second largest, but the competition might not ease up. Hickman Mills, which combined with Ruskin High School this year, reached the state semifinals in 2008. So did Lee’s Summit West in 2006. Park Hill always seems to have a talented girls program, and Truman won its district each of the past two seasons. Kelley knows that every night is difficult, like most coaches say, but the practices with a handful and a half of guards fighting for playing time should make the competition fierce. Sophomore Ashleigh Bristol, who saw extensive time at point guard for the junior varsity team as a freshman,

will play a big factor on this year’s team even if she’s just coming off the bench. “She’s going to give us some good minutes, Kelley said. Like last year’s team, there could be nights when the Indians’ outside shooting cools off and suffers through a long night because of the difficulty in scoring inside. Its highpressure defense should create quick opportunities down the court. Facing high-pressure defenses, Central shouldn’t struggle to break the press and avoid turnovers. “If you’re not ready, you’re going to be beat, Kelley said, “It’s as simple as that. Andrew DeWitt can be reached at andrew.dewitt@newspressnow.com

Lions strive for consistency from youthful boys team

By TRAVIS HARTMAN St. Joseph News-Press

Compete and be consistent. That is the theme St. Joseph Christian coach Scott Jenkins is trying to instill in his team this year. Jenkins lost three to graduation and will only have two seniors returning. In a young team, it can be hard to expect consistency, but the Lions are returning their leading scorer from last season in 6-foot-5 Forrest Hicks. The junior big man averaged 10.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game last season for a 6-13 team. However, the Lions will have to find a way to make up for the loss of Luke Mathes, Matt Nelson and David Welchert, who combined for 15.4 points a game on a team that averaged 43.5 points a contest. Welchert also led the team in rebounds with 6.5 a game. “I want to help the team out with rebounds more this year as well, Hicks said. “Also, I think we have the talent to fill those positions. It will be hard, but I think we can do it. After another down season, it’s no surprise Jenkins wants a more consistent approach out of his players this year. “I want to see consistency, Jenkins said. “These guys want it, and there is no doubt about that. They have the heart and desire to do well, and I know they will. The Lions expected two key seniors to return in Dylan Aebersold and Levi Evans.

file photo/St. Joseph News-Press

St. Joseph Christian’s Forrest Hicks shoots between South Nodaway defenders during a game last year at St. Joseph Christian School. Hicks, a 6-foot-5 junior, is one of the Lions’ best returning threats. Aebersold was the second leading scorer last year with 6.3 points a game, but after a knee injury during an 8-man semifinal football game against Miami (Amoret), he likely will play this year but could start slow as he recovers from a strain. “I think it affects us in some ways in what we want to accomplish early on, Jenkins said. “But I think this is where depth comes in good, and I think we have that right now. Football players are going to get bumps and bruises, but you know the guys that want it the most are going to come out here and fight

through that. A four-year starter, Evans averaged 4.1 points a game last season, and with the injury to Aebersold will be needed to step up immediately. The Lions will have to rely on their two 6-5 post players in sophomore Robbie Kaufman and Hicks. Kaufman gained a lot of experience last season after averaging 2.2 points a game and 2.4 rebounds a game. “Robbie Kaufman and Forrest Hicks are two guys who worked really hard this summer and are really key guys in the middle for us, Jenkins said. “They got height, and they got athleticism that they bring to the team. For the third straight season, Christian’s football team played in the 8man Show-Me Bowl and forced the basketball team to practice without David Beard, Aeborsold, Alex Maudlin and Taylor Buford. Christian will have only one week of practice with those players before its first game. “That experience that the football team gets to bring back of what it takes to be a champion, we want that on our basketball team, Jenkins said. “The more experience you can get competeting at that level, we want that, too. “We are just glad to have them back whenever they finally do get back to us. Travis Hartman can be reached at travis.hartman@newspressnow.com

New St. Joseph Christian girls coach starts up early morning practice ethic By ANdRew dewITT I St. Joseph News-Press One thing St. Joseph Christian girls didn’t expect when long-time coach Danny Maggart resigned after last season was that the new coach would turn everyone into morning people. David Johnson, who previously coached at Doniphan West, Holton and Baileyville B&B, doesn’t teach at the school and farms 3,300 acres of soybeans, corn and alfalfa hay with his father and two brothers. So when basketball practice started in the middle of harvest season, Johnson moved practices to the morning so that he could help out with farm work in the day and still have time for his four kids and wife in the evenings. Even before the sun comes up, even after daylight savings time ended, basketballs pounded the court inside St. Joseph Christian with a team returning all of its points scored from a year ago. The girls arrive at 5:30 a.m., and basketballs are out by 5:45. “We haven’t had any girls miss practice because of the morning start time, Johnson said. “I don’t know if that’s out of fear or what. The Lions finished 16-6 last season, losing to Hamilton in the Class 2 District 16 championship game. But this season, thanks to MSHSAA’s re-classification cycle every two seasons, the Lions moved down to Class 1 and immediately became a favorite to win District 14. Led by a strong junior class of Alexa Taff, Courtlin Osborn and Kasey Hall along with senior Erin Hook and sophomore Emylee King, who saw tons of playing time as a freshman, the Lions are ready to make a run into the state playoffs like the school did in 2003 and 2004 when Christian reached the state semifinals. Johnson has experience leading teams into the state playoffs. Between 1998-2001 at Baileyville B&B, Johnson’s team qualified for the state tournament all four years, finished second twice and won the Class 1A state title in 1999 with a 27-1 record. “The hardest thing is following in the footsteps of a man like Danny Maggart, Johnson said. “Not only as a coach but

file photo/St. Joseph News-Press

St. Joseph Christian foward Kasey Hall takes a shot over Immaculata defender Shelbie Wolk during an Elwood Invitational game last year. as a man of faith. I’d rather lose the right way than win the wrong way and not get respected by our opponents. Johnson says the foundation for a successful team has been laid by Maggart and its up to him to lead the team to success. Expect the Lions to play up-tempo, high-pressure basketball that’s become common among Class 1 schools in northwest Missouri. Christian has a reputation of having great guards but not being able to go inside. That’s one thing Johnson won’t stand for. He knows that if his team relies on its outside shooting its bound to get beat. “We have to be a balanced team and rely on our post players, Johnson said. Madison hopes to bring change to girls program at Lafayette

By ROSS MARTIN St. Joseph News-Press

Coming to Lafayette made a huge difference for Ryan Madison — about plus-40 in his first season. After seven years as coach at Class 1 Stanberry, Madison took a job at Lafayette last spring to coach girls basketball. He had 57 players show up for his first practice with the Fighting Irish. At Stanberry, he never had more than 19. “There were kids that I didn’t even know, said Madison, who owns a 133-58 record and won three district titles at Stanberry. “Just the sheer number to choose from and have that many kids to build three teams with. That’s another difference. Stanberry we didn’t have three teams. “The sheer numbers are going to take a while to get used to. A Missouri Western graduate

contributions at the varsity level. Only two seniors — Baleigh McCrary and Sam Wood — were on the roster for last year’s 713 campaign, and junior Myia Weston and sophomore Oceonna Weston bring the most statistical impact to this year’s team. “Here we are with a group of kids that’s underclassmen heavy. We’ve got a lot of young kids, Madison said. “I don’t use that as a crutch. I’ve heard a lot of coaches say, ‘We’re young; we’re young,’ but at some point, you’re not anymore. I’d rather have talented jessica stewart/St. Joseph News-Press kids that are young than a bunch New Lafayette girls basketball coach Ryan Madison leads a recent practice at Lafayette of seniors who can’t play. High School. lone junior on last year’s roster — will not return to the team. Madison also knows that for the third straight season the Irish will be infusing freshman talent at the varsity level from the beginning. Without Dydell’s slick ballhandling and quickness, Myia Weston — a three-year starter — will be called upon to provide stability. Oceonna Weston led last year’s team in scoring and rebounding as a freshman and provides a post presence. Now, Madison and Lafayette must fill in around the edges and start the growing process. “I feel like it’s going to be a good year, Myia Weston said. “We still need a lot of work, but so far so good. Ross Martin can be reached at ross.martin@newspressnow.com

Fighting Irish boys relying on experience, talent in pursuit of another big year By ANDREW DEWITT St. Joseph News-Press

Lafayette coach Chris Neff knows what he has in his four seniors. Tim Nelson handles the ball and leads this group. Tyrai Skeen, the energy man, was the best sixthman in the Midland Empire Conference last year and changed the pace of every game he entered. Ian Toalson provides the brute strength inside as a legitimate post player. Max Sollars plays solid defense and does whatever he’s told and will do anything for the team. So with his four seniors, Neff knows the fortunes of this team rely on sophomore Jeff Leeson. The four seniors are a talented bunch, but if the team wants to

win its third district title in four seasons, the Irish need Leeson to grow into his role as a starter. Like last year, the Fighting Irish face a tough schedule which includes going to the Jefferson City Tournament where they will face Mount Lebanon High School (Penn.). The Blue Devils went 25-2 last season. Lafayette also plays Harmon (Kan.) and Hogan Prep to go with the season-opening Topeka Highland Park (Kan.) Tournament. “We need to play a tough schedule for our team to get better, Neff said. The 6-foot-7 Leeson played last year off the bench when the Irish needed another scorer on the court besides Taylor Deayon (lost to graduation), Toalson and Nelson. Against

His large frame didn’t help him when he was intimidated by the senior-loaded MEC rosters. Sometimes he even felt lost on the court. But this summer instead of playing with a summer club team, Leeson stuck with Neff. Leeson exclusively trained and played with Lafayette in their summer leagues and shootouts. “He had a great summer to become a great player in this program, Neff said. Even with four seniors around him, Leeson will need to get his points for the Irish to be successful, according to Neff. Leeson made 69 percent of his shots from inside the 3-point arc and made 34 percent of his 3point attempts. He must also use his big body to bang around to get rebounds and help Toalson inside. “I know I definitely need to dribble more and be more aggressive, Leeson said. “Coach said he expects a lot more of me this year.

Benton girls expect the unexpected Benton’s Breonna Embray, front right, fights for a ball in a game against Bishop LeBlond last year. Embray is the Cardinals’ lone returning senior starter.

By ROSS MARTIN St. Joseph News-Press

For the first time in a long time, Benton’s girls enter the season not exactly sure who will supply the points. The Cardinals don’t have a returning all-state player for the first time since 2003 — when Missouri high school classifications still ended in ‘A’ and current coach Brett Goodwin was in the infancy of his coaching tenure. “This is one of the rare years or seasons that we’re getting ready to start here where we really don’t know what to expect,â€? said Goodwin, entering his 10th season at Benton. “We have a lot of question marks — not in a bad way. It’s kind of exciting because we’ve always known what we’ve had. This is one year where we don’t know. “It’s kind of like Christmas. You’re getting ready to open up a gift, and you don’t know what you have.â€? Whether Goodwin finds a shiny new toy or a lump of coal depends on a number of circumstances. The Cardinals return 2½ starters from last year’s 24-4 team, which lost to Staley in Class 4 sectionals. That is to say versatile guard/forward Breonna Embray anchors the lineup as a four-year starter, while sophomore guard Andee Wahlert and junior guard Sydney Wilkinson split starting duties last year. Wahlert started the early part of the year before giving way to Wilkinson down the stretch. “There’s no question that you feel you have a girl whose been battle-tested,â€? Goodwin said. “Andee started more than half the season, really. We do feel really confident with what we have coming back in our backcourt. The big question will be our frontcourt, and I think everyone knows that.â€? That trio brings experience with Goodwin’s hard-nosed defensive style, while junior transfer Izzie Alexander — a 5-foot-9 post presence — factors in after moving to St. Joseph

file photo/ St. Joseph News-Press

from Springfield. Alexander played her first two years at Kickapoo High School, which finished third in Class 5 last year. Goodwin also hopes to rely on a blossoming sophomore class to provide depth. Lauryn Doolan should start in the frontcourt, while Paige Kneale will provide bench help at the guard positions. All will have to combine to make up for the loss of four-year starter and two-time all-state selection Karli Sample in addition to the absence of all-distrct performers Shelbee Cox and Kerstyn Bolton. “Hopefully, the players we have have faith in themselves, Wilkinson said. “We can’t be afraid to take the shots we didn’t have to take last year. While no all-state players are on the roster, Embray brings a bunch

of talents and could emerge as a big-time player. The lone senior with significant experience, the left-hander is one of the top defenders in the state and runs the floor well. Benton holds a 145-20 record during the past six seasons. Four of those campaigns ended in the state playoffs, including the undefeated 2007 state championship team. The goals remain the same each year for the Cardinals, and even without a proven scorer on the roster, Benton should be a factor in the playoff chase. “It’s like really weird, Embray said. “In years past, I’ve had people to look up to. Now, everyone’s looking up to me. It’s a big responsibility to take on, but I think I’m ready for it. Ross Martin can be reached at ross.martin@newspressnow.com

Young looks to key boys resurgence for Cardinals By ROSS MARTIN St. Joseph News-Press

After recording only five wins a year ago and losing two 3-point threats to graduation, Benton would seem to be a team searching for answers. Instead, the exact opposite might be true. The Cardinals return a host of contributors, including emerging star Chris Young at guard. In Ron Tyler’s seventh season at Benton’s helm, the veteran coach sees a grownup group that learned on the go last year with players that now understand their individual roles. “We were doing a lot of puzzle work last year, Tyler said. “I think they’re starting to see now, ‘This is where I fit in at; this is what I can do; This is what I can add to the team,’ so that’s what I see with these guys this year. In addtion to Young, 6-foot4 Matt Pritchett will provide a strong post presence, while junior Ryan Mitchell will provide the ball-handling. Cameron Richardson will be a slash player with the ability to score, providing a lot of versatility. Young could be the key. After emerging as a goto threat late last season, the left-handed guard is the only established scorer in the bunch. “When you look at us on paper, we look like we can be very competitive, Tyler said. “It’s not a this one person is going to carry us. In order for the one person, Chris, to be successful, the whole team has got to chip in. Benton lost shooters

file photo/St. Joseph News-Press

Benton’s Chris Young drives toward the basket during a game last season. Now a junior, the lefthanded guard led the Cardinals in scoring last year. Stephen Crockett and Austin Parrott and must replace their perimeter production. Richardson hopes to provide some of that scoring and leadership as one of a small contingent of seniors. The lanky senior sees reason for optimism for a team that finished 520 last year with three wins against Chillicothe and two vs. Bishop LeBlond. “We have a lot of experience this year, where last year we were really young, said Richardson, a lanky 6-foot-3 player with diverse talents. “You can’t really use that as an exuse, but I think that was one of our problems. Tyler also hopes Pritchett — who didn’t come out for basketball until midseason last year — continues the leadership role he developed during this past football season. As the Cardinals quarterback, Pritchett helped Benton to a 6-4 season. “He ran the team so I know he’s capable of being a leader, Tyler said. T

hat season is why Alicia Bell can’t quit. She was the centerpiece of St. Joseph’s greatest girls basketball team and poised for Division II stardom. “I cannot walk away from it because I’ve seen the potential that I have and what I thought was going to be,” Bell said. “I just want to know what could’ve been. That was the best year of my life. I was happy every day and just playing great basketball. I want to get back to that point and pick up where I left off.” Bell has been waiting for nearly three years. Bell spearheaded Benton to an undefeated state championship run as a senior in 2007, but that path to prominence hasn’t materialized. Derailments from all walks of life intervened. Two anterior cruciate ligament tears, a transfer from Northwest Missouri State to Missouri Western, academic struggles and the birth of her 9-month-old daughter rendered the sophomore a perpetual outsider to the game she loves. Fourth-year Western women’s coach Lynn Plett has seen Bell on the brink of impacting his team before only to see another road block emerge, but he’s kept her on the team. He’s also anxious to see if the once-budding superstar still has it. “That’s why I’ve been patient with her. There’s a ton of potential there for her to really help our team,” Plett said. “Even at practice now, a lot of times she’s a difference-maker. She’s so intelligent and so competitive and so aggressive on the court. She has a lot of respect from her teammates.” ) ) ) ) ) At a preseason practice this year, Bell wears the same first-unit jersey as entrenched starters Jessica Koch or Brenna Saline, but for the first time in Bell’s career, she’s nervous. Her presumed Griffon debut is now just weeks away. Bell, however, knows she’s not that player she was — yet. Fast-break drills tire the 21-year-old, and she spent the first weeks of practice thinking about diving for loose balls when as a teenager she’d lay out for them with no hesitation. “My body feels about 10 years older than the rest of them girls out there,” she said. “Three years ago I was light on my feet, fast and quick. Now I feel about two seconds behind on everything. But every day gets better. “The first couple weeks I was worried like maybe I shouldn’t try to do this.”

Western sophomore guard Alicia Bell defends a throw-in during a recent practice. Bell will finally play for Western this season after a transfer, two torn ACLs and sitting out last year due to her pregnancy. ) ) ) ) ) None of these hesitant emotions clouded her mind before. “The biggest thing Alicia brings to any team is confidence,” Goodwin said. “She demands everybody’s excellence out there on the floor. She pushes everybody to be better than what they are. She’s a born leader. Her play is evidence of that.” Bell, a power forward trapped in a point guard‘s body for the Cardinals, averaged a double-double in three straight seasons despite standing just 5-foot-6. Bell was a three-time all-state selection and led Class 4 Benton to a 30-0 season as a senior, the only undefeated basketball campaign in St. Joseph history. That team bested eventual Class 5 champion Liberty and was rarely tested. “I still think Alicia Bell arguably is one of the best players to come out of the St. Joe area,” Goodwin said. Bell opted for Northwest because coach Gene Steinmeyer sought her as a pure basketball player as opposed to other schools that would’ve insisted on her playing point guard. But during her eighth game as a reserve at Northwest, Bell tore her left ACL, and her life wasn’t the same. “I was on an adrenaline drive,“ Bell said. “I’d just won that state championship. I’d played like I’d never played before. I was ready to take on something new. Just to get all that shut down immediately just killed me.” Bell began driving home to St. Joseph nearly every day and missing several classes and practices. Steinmeyer eventually granted the homesick freshman a full-release transfer to Western hoping she wouldn’t have to sit out a season. Instead, the MIAA ruled she would have to anyway. Academically ineligible in her first semester at Western regardless, Bell began wowing teammates in practice and prepared for a role on 2009-10 Griffons. But in an open-gym session in April

2009, Bell’s new teammates watched her career screech to a halt again. This time, it was her right ACL. Since the injury occurred seven months before the season, Bell still had a chance to don a Griffon game uniform for the first time. Becoming pregnant soon after changed all that. Bell watched Western’s second straight disappointing season in street clothes. “The first year I (missed), it wasn’t so bad because it didn’t really feel like my team,” Bell said. “But last year it really bugged me out because I kept feeling like I put myself back over here on the bench. It was very frustrating because time to time I’d see coach Plett looking down at me like, ‘You should be out there right now.’”

“I was just exhausted. I didn’t to do anything but take care of her and lay down,” she said. I just really didn’t take care of my responsibilities.” ) ) ) ) )

Bell is grateful for this last chance. A physical education major, she feared her career could be over, as she told her coach she’d miss another year-plus of action. “I know he was disappointed in me, but he didn’t react the way I thought he would,” Bell said. “I thought he was going to say, ‘OK, I’m fed up with you. You’ve got to go.’ But he stuck by me through everything. That’s the most important thing to me: he’s never wavered in the way he felt about me.” Plett sees Bell contributing immediate) ) ) ) ) ly likely as an off-the-bench energy perBell’s daughter Kamiyah changed it all. former whose best asset is an advanced Bell spent so many years placing bas- knowledge of the game. ketball at the top of her life’s hierarchy, “She sees the court better than anyone dedicating herself to improving or rehab- I’ve played with,” senior forward Rachel bing, but nine months ago, her beloved Luteyn said. sport received a permanent demotion. ) ) ) ) ) “Three years ago, I could just come and go as I please. Western women out to prove pollsters wrong this season By SAM ROBINSON St. Joseph News-Press

The Griffons received the message, and they’re out to bury the image that created it. MIAA coaches picked the Missouri Western women a distant 11th in the preseason poll — 18 points behind Truman State and just nine ahead of first-year Lincoln. The prediction comes as a result of the last impression Western left, losing nine straight games to close last season. With nearly the entire cast back, an experienced Griffons team (7-20, 5-15 MIAA in 200910) looks to overcome the stigma that follows another disappointing campaign. “We’re picked second to last in the conference so we have something to prove,” senior center Rachel Luteyn said, “that we’re not the second-worst team in our conference. We’re going to be competing, and we’re not OK with being picked so low.” Luteyn is one of four seniors on this year’s squad, a rarity for a team that’s been in rebuilding mode for most of coach Lynn Plett’s tenure.

“We’re just trying to instill a sense of urgency that we feel,” Luteyn said. “It’s our last chance to play organized basketball so we’re going to make the most of it.” Luteyn, guards Brenna Saline and Lauren Nolke and forward Colleen Schneider comprise the senior core, but the Griffons will likely go as far as 5-foot-11 junior forward Jessica Koch takes them. Koch tallied team-highs in points (14.3 per game), rebounds (7.2 per game) and steals (2 per game), ranking in the top 10 in the conference in each category. “She sets the tone for us to some degree,” Plett said. “The nice thing with her is not just that she can get it done on her skills, but she does it with her work ethic too.” The same supporting cast — minus forwards Tierra Ford and Kristin Bush who both transferred — returns with each healthy after several significant injuries last season. Threepoint specialist Nolke (partially torn ACL), point guard Kallie Schoonover (knee) and Luteyn (fractured palm) are each in the rotation in the nonconference slate. Plett doesn’t see another

also dwelled near the bottom in rebounding. Other than Koch, no Griffon grabbed more than four boards per contest, but Saline at just 5-foot-8 was the team’s most effective rebounder, grabbing seven or more in six of her seven starts to close the season. Luteyn and Schneider will be counted on more for paint production this season following the two forwards’ departure. Freshman Paige Wilds, who is still recovering from a torn ACL, should also help in the post. The coaching staff sets a team rebounding goal each game to file photo/St. Joseph News-Press keep them focused on boxing out. Western couldn’t consistently function on fast breaks. “We’re definitely a quick team, and we can to use that to our advantage,” Luteyn said. “That’s the goal of our offense: to get some fast-break points and not necessarily have to set up an offense.” Having point guards Schoonover, Vice and sophomore Alicia Bell all in the rotation along with Koch lends itself to a solid fast-break core. Western once again opens its MIAA redemption tour with Pittsburg State at home this Wednesday, its last victory before the season quickly turned south. “Last year was better than the year before,” Koch said. “We still had a little bit of tweaking to do, like finishing out games. We didn’t lose many games by that much. It was close games. This year I think we’ll be able to finish those games out if we have the right chemistry.” Western is banking on its rare veteran nucleus for that. Western men’s season promises fast-paced offense By SAM ROBINSON St. Joseph News-Press

I think I’ll go back to a lot of my old offensive philosophies. I think you’ll see more freedom. We’ll certainly run what we call European because all our big guys can shoot it. I think you’ll see us back to that no-offense concept I used a lot during the ’90s and the early 2000s. Tom SmiTh, Missouri Western State University’s basketball coach.

Missouri Western coach Tom Smith has no doubt his seismic cast of newcomers has more talent than last season’s NCAA Tournament team. The question is can that raw individual prowess morph into a cohesive unit when it counts. “We’re not going to be out-talented by very many people, Smith said. “Are we ready to play at this level in the MIAA right now? That remains to be seen. We certainly have as much talent. Smith is no stranger to stocking his teams with junior-college transfers, but this season he went all in, adding 11 new players from various JUCOs and four-year colleges. Senior center Brandon Beck is the only returner. The players are still learning how to pronounce the conference and trying to co-exist in time for the start of the mammoth 22-game MIAA slate this week. “Everyone’s fighting for a position because we don’t know what the hell’s going on here, senior guard P’Allen Stinnett said. “At the same time, it makes it even more fun because we’re so competitive and we get a lot of things done. It’ll probably be to our advantage we have a couple of seniors on the team who have one chance at this. Stinnett, a 2009-10 preseason firstteam All-MVC honoree after averaging 12.6 points per game as a sophomore at Creighton, transferred after being suspended indefinitely from the Blue Jays and is part of an athletic nucleus. “I think we really shoot the ball better than any team that I can remember in over 12 years, Smith said. “The last two years, we really kind of turned the program back around a little bit, but we couldn’t throw it in the ocean at times. On some nights, some of our key players went 0-for-the-night. I don’t think that’ll be the case this year. Western relied on more of a halfcourt game and ranked eighth in

tion against Livin’ the Dream, and 6-foot-6 forwards Jonathan Wright (Bishop LeBlond) and Jeff West can also shoot from outside. “I think I’ll go back to a lot of my old offensive philosophies. I think you’ll see more freedom, Smith said. “We’ll certainly run what we call European because all our big guys can shoot it. I think you’ll see us back to that no-offense concept I used a lot during the ’90s and the early 2000s. Inside, junior 6-foot-6 transfers Lavonte Douglas (Kishwaukee) and Dernodo Eiland (Cameron University) will be expected to battle the other MIAA post players. Douglas’ firstsemester ineligibility will force the Griffons (18-13, 12-8 MIAA in 200910) to rely on quickness outside, but when he returns, Smith envisions a prime offensive paint presence. “He could easily be our best inside player we’ve had in a number of years, he said. “I love James Bush; I always will, (but) Lavonte can shoot it from the perimeter already. He’s got more offensive moves, let’s say, than James did. Smith doesn’t doubt the offensive talent but has expressed concern about how that will manifest defensively. “Our team, we can score one through five, Stinnett said. “There’s no one that can be stopped. If we play team defense, we’ll be a helluva team to beat. Smith said Beck has emerged as a leader but may have to accelerate his game to keep up with this team’s pace. fIlE photo/St. Joseph News-Press Douglas offered a prediction that missouri Western center Brandon Beck puts the ball up over two Southwest Baptist defenders speaks to the newcomers’ confiduring a game last season. Northwest anxious for Dietz’s return Bearcat’s standout 6th-year center plays NCAA eligibility waiting game for final hoops semester

By SAM ROBINSON St. Joseph News-Press

Gentry Dietz watches nearly the same Northwest Missouri State cast scrimmage toward the end of a November practice. The 6-foot-2 senior center is counting the days until she can join them, but for now, the school’s single-season blocks record holder is an anxious spectator. “It’s rough,” Dietz said. “It’s a long process having to watch everyone day-in, day-out and have to sit and wait for a semester.” Dietz averaged 14.7 points, an MIAA-best 8.4 rebounds and two blocks per game in her first season at Northwest Missouri State, but due to the NCAA granting the sixth-year player just one semester of eligibility, she’s relegated to individual workouts with coaches and post-practice pickup sessions with players. “How well they’re policing that time we allow them to play pickup will determine how fast Gentry gets in the flow of things,” Northwest coach Gene Steinmeyer said. “To Gentry’s credit, she’s really working hard. She does the same conditioning our players do. They know she’s not waiting for next semester getting fat and out of shape.” Dietz is eligible to return in time for the Bearcats’ ninth game of the season — Fort Hays State — but until then Northwest (14-15, 9-11 MIAA) will rely on having everyone else from its fifth-place team back, especially its guard trio. Abby Henry was in the same boat as Dietz last season, a Division I transfer recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, but the point guard recaptured her form to score 17.1 points per game. Henry, perhaps the conference’s top returning dribble penetrator, again teams with junior Shelly Martin (10.2 ppg), who drained 3-pointers at a conference-best rate of 47 percent. No other shooter topped 43. “Abby, she’s one of the hardest-working players I’ve ever seen,” Dietz said. “If you take away Abby’s inside, then Shelly’s out to hit the 3. I think they’re deadly. Then when we get all

It wasn’t scoring that kept a then-new nucleus back; Northwest’s 73 points per game was second only to national champion Emporia State in the league. It was defense — the Bearcats allowed a conference-worst 73 per contest. “We can all score; we all know that,” Henry said. “It’s just if we can all play defense. I think we played more like not-my-girl defense (last year). We were all just looking out for ourselves. This year with our team unity, I think we have each other’s back more.” Henry and Curtis were each among the league’s steal leaders, and Dietz was dominant in the

paint. But Steinmeyer saw a younger team rely on Dietz too much and fail to consistently operate in Northwest’s variety of zones. “I don’t think they bought into it,” he said. “It wasn’t familiar. They didn’t do it in high school so they’re not going to do it here. Some people were jumping screens; some people weren’t jumping screens, and you had an inconsistent defense. I think we communicate better right now.” Just two newcomers will mix in: freshman guard Meridee Scott (Maryville High School) and senior 6-foot-5 center Kyla Roehrig, a volleyball graduate assistant with one year of basketball eligibility. Steinmeyer said Roehrig, who backs up Candace Boeh now, could allow Dietz to play power forward, giving the Bearcats a potent post combination to go

along with solid 3-point shooters on the perimeter. Scott could be the only freshman to see big minutes, as top recruit Megan Hogg (illness) will likely redshirt the season after returning home to Waukee, Iowa. Steinmeyer hopes to have her at practice next semester. Further adding to the early depletion, sophomore forward Emily Hauder (dislocated finger) and sophomore center Alexis Boeh (back) are dealing with injuries. “It’s crazy. I feel like somebody goes down every day,” Dietz said. “Hopefully we’ll get the injuries out of the way in the beginning so we don’t have to fight through it. (Having them early) is not as important as having them at the end of the season.” Sam Robinson can be reached at sam.robinson@newspressnow.com

MARYVILLE, Mo. — Elijah Allen is the last link to Northwest Missouri State’s NCAA tournament past. The senior forward that averaged more than 17 points and six rebounds per game returns to a Bearcat group that’s missed the conference tournament the past two seasons. Allen rode the bench for the 200708 group that claimed the MIAA tournament championship and advanced to the second round of the South Central regional. In his final year he hopes to remedy the recent past. “I don’t think that should be hard at all,” Allen said of returning to the conference tourney. “We have to fight every game and limit our turnovers. That’s what killed us last year.” Northwest (12-15, 7-13 MIAA) stood on the brink of a trip to Kansas City in the waning seconds of their regular-season finale last year against Missouri Southern, but, spurred by three late giveaways, squandered a nine-point lead in the final two minutes and lost in overtime to finish ninth in the conference. This season, the scoring burden rests on Allen’s shoulders first, as top guard Girod Adams (15.9 ppg) graduated. Replacing Adams is sophomore point guard DeShaun Cooper, last season’s MIAA freshman of the year. The 5-foot-8 lightning-quick point guard

posted 10.7 points and four assists per game but also committed 94 turnovers, including 12 against Southern in their first meeting. “Mentally he has been considerably tougher,” Northwest second-year coach Ben McCollum said. “He’ll show it throughout the season.” Lafayette alum Bryston Williams left the team midway through preseason practice to pursue a football scholarship elsewhere, leaving a hole at the 2-guard spot. San Jose City Community College transfer Shaneel

Narayan received first crack at the spot, starting the first three games but fellow junior-college transfer Donald Stewart and freshman Tyler Funk will also factor in at guard. Allen said Funk’s defensive tenacity reminds him of Williams. McCollum envisions more of a post-oriented offense than a season ago, however, as 6-foot-8 prized recruit Dillon Starzl (Kearney) starts at center. McCollum isn’t worried about Starzl being bullied in the paint by older MIAA

posts. “He’ll handle it well because his body’s mature enough,” McCollum said. “He’s tough enough, but I think he needs to get a little bit better defensively to compete at a high level. But offensively he’s as good as we’ve had here. He’s great at sealing down there, and he’s hard to push off the block.” Also filling in will be 6-foot10 freshman Kyle Schlake and 6-9 junior Jake Reinders, who led the Bearcats in blocks last season. Forward Grant Cozad, the third member of the Kearney triumvirate, will redshirt the season with Allen and Arunas Simanavicius in front of him. Allen, whose cousin is NBA No. 2 overall draft pick Evan Turner, said he trained with current and former NBA players Willie Greene (Hornets) and Devin Green to prepare for his final season. With just one full-time starter back, McCollum said inexperience will be the primary hurdle early but believes this squad’s skill level is higher than his first team’s. “We’ve improved our talent quite a bit,” he said. “From the first scrimmage we had to the third scrimmage, we improved drastically. We need to see that same improvement from the first game we have to the 28th or however many we play.” Sam Robinson can be reached at sam.robinson@newspressnow.com

Benedictine men set for new start under coach Eisner By PHIL ERVIN Special to the News-Press

File photo/Atchison Globe

Chris McFaul (25), a junior, goes up for a shot during a game last year. He is a returner to the Ravens, who enter their first season under new coach Todd Eisner.

ATCHISON, Kan. — As would be expected with a first-year head coach, things are a lot different around the Benedictine men’s basketball program than they were at this point a year ago. Practice is harder. New strategies are being learned and employed. Conditioning is tougher. Expectations have risen. “I’ve been hard on them,” said new coach Todd Eisner. “That’s just who I am. I’m a very demanding coach, someone who has great expectations of himself and the people that I’m involved with, and I think that’s one of the reasons they brought me down here. And I don’t plan on ever changing in that way.” Those demands have included rigorous conditioning and weight room exercises in the spring, increased dedication to personal progress during the summer and the toughest set of preseason workouts any Ravens basketball player has been through in his college career. “I would say the main difference so far is the structure in practice,” senior center Chris Bonham said. “Going drill to drill, the intensity level that we’ve been working on is a lot higher than it’s ever been. That’s one thing that we aren’t worried about so far is the shape we’re in.” The expectations of what it means to be a Benedictine have been altered so drastically since Eisner’s arrival from Creighton in the spring that a few players are no longer with the program, including standout freshman Keith Winn, Jr. “When we came, we wanted to evaluate and try to give everyone an honest evaluation of where they were at within the confines of what had been going on here,” Eisner said, “and then understand and relate to them what the expectations were going to be for the new program and then hold them accountable to what the expectations were. Those that didn’t want to buy into what we were doing, we gave them an

option of finding somewhere else to go to school and play basketball.” It sounds like a good, old-fashioned kick in the pants a program like Benedictine needs to become relevant after former coach Joe Brickner failed in 12 tries to get the Ravens to the NAIA tournament. It sounds like the lighthearted, fatherly leadership that guided Benedictine basketball has given way to a no-nonsense, drill sergeant-esque, pressure-packed culture. So what, exactly, has Raven players smiling and laughing before practices lately? “The fact that it’s a fresh start, a new beginning, that has us all really excited,” said point guard Geno McNeil. “(Eisner) has won a bunch of times, so he knows what he’s talking about. When somebody’s done it, that’s really exciting because you know he knows what it takes to get there.” It will be no small task to match the success level of Eisner, who holds a 305110 record as an NAIA coach in 12 years at Viterbo (Wisc.) University and later Bellevue (Neb.) University. The Ravens lost 10 of their last 13 games in barely qualifying for the 2010 HAAC tournament after being ranked 14th nationally earlier in the year. Benedictine returns four starters in Bonham, McNeil, guard Chris McFaul and forward Alex Miller. Guard Kristian Williams also saw ample playing time off the bench last season. Bonham, NAIA Div. I’s top shot blocker last year, had knee surgery in the spring after being injured late in the season. Eisner said the operation didn’t help much, and that Bonham had been struggling in practice. In addition to Bonham’s injury, all four newcomers (three freshmen and a junior college transfer) were hurt or sick in the weeks leading up to the Ravens’ opener against Tabor College. If healthy, guard Maurice Burns, guard Elgin Caldwell and forward Charlie Walrapp could all see playing time in their first seasons in Raven uniforms.

ATCHISON, Kan. — Count Chad Folsom out among coaches that ignore preseason rankings. The 10-year Benedictine women’s basketball coach saw his team picked fifth in the Heart of America Athletic Conference coaches’ poll. Rather than shrug it off, Folsom pinned the rankings to each of his players’ lockers before one preseason practice. “With what we have coming back and the success we’ve had in the past few years, that’s kind of a slap in the face,” Folsom said. The Ravens have never finished lower than fourth since Folsom took the reins in 2001. It’s just one more incentive for a Ravens squad with plenty of returning experience from a 2009-10 team (18-12, 13-7) that had its conference title hopes painfully dashed against MidAmerica Nazarene in the HAAC quarterfinals. “Obviously, we plan on finishing a lot higher than we were picked,” senior guard Kaela Stratman said. “With the way things ended last year, and what we expect of ourselves, we’re going into this season with tons of motivation. The ladies have been working really hard in practice and now we just want to get on the

floor and play games.” Benedictine lost starting guards Christina Reischl and Drew Huff to graduation, but returns 10 letterwinners and depth that rivals any in the conference. Two-guard Stratman was the first off the bench in most games for Folsom, proving at times to be one of the HAAC’s most dangerous 3-point shooters. Kelsey Wolfe and Kelsey Anselmi will direct the offense from the point guard spot. Wolfe earned captaincy as a junior this year after finishing second on the team in assists last season. Anselmi, who has battled a nagging leg injury throughout the preseason, came on late to give the Ravens an added boost when Huff and Wolfe needed a break. The addition of Candice Akers gives Benedictine depth on the wing. The junior-college transfer led Penn Valley Community College in scoring last year. Center Teresa Zienkewicz and forwards Jillian Flores and Liz Stinson all put in quality minutes in 2009-10. Zienkewicz is the team’s top returning rebounder and second returning scorer. Heather Wansing, the top pointgetter coming back, joined the Ravens after Benedictine’s volleyball season ended.

“This is one of the best groups front-to-back we’ve had returning since I’ve been here,” Folsom said. “I think the post will be very strong for us, and we’ll look to get the ball into Teresa and everyone else. “It’s nice to know when someone needs a break you can put someone else in and not miss a beat.” While Benedictine’s personnel offer evidence a successful campaign could be in the works, the Lady Ravens must improve from last year in a couple key areas. Benedictine turned the ball over 20 times per game last season. The Lady Ravens also shot 68.6 percent from the foul stripe. While those numbers on their own aren’t horrifying when compared to the rest of the HAAC, errant passes and missed free throws often came at crucial times. “One of our main focuses in preseason practice has been taking care of the ball,” Folsom said. “Too many times last year did we let teams back in the game by not taking care of the ball.” Benedictine fans won’t see too many tweaks in strategy this season, File photo/Atchison Globe but there’s no doubting what style of play has been emphasized through- Benedictine point guard Kelsey Wolfe battles for a losse ball during a out the preseason and Folsom’s ten game last season. Wolfe graduated from DeKalb High School and enters her junior season with the Ravens. years at the helm.
