he new era, or rather, the next era for Lafayette starts with plenty of question marks. Chris Neff has developed one of the strongest programs in northwest Missouri and last year the season ended in the Class 4 championship game, a 45-42 loss to Republic.

The second run to the Missouri Show-Me Showdown in Neff’s tenure ended with another plaque to add to the legacy for the North Siders but also coincided with the loss of three starters. Now, the next part for the Fighting Irish legacy starts. With so many starting jobs up for grabs, the competition has been strong in the early weeks of practice. “The competition makes practice so much fun, because every day is a job interview for

every single person in here,” Neff said, pointing to a group working on shooting drills in the paint. “It was hard to take three spots last year, no one was taking spots (from Xavier Kurth, Cody Massey and Billy Cook). Now, it is up for grabs every single day. That makes us better down the road, I would expect.” There are a few known names left for Lafayette, but the departure of the three

Benton guard Mallory McAndrews takes a jump shot during Thursday’s game against Bishop LeBlond last year at Springer Gymnasium at Benton High School.

Brett Goodwin’s team will enter this winter with a different role — the hunted. Benton ended a three-year playoff drought and the victories kept coming after a district championship win over rival Lafayette. Sectional and quarterfi nal victories followed — part of a 10-game winning streak — to send the Cardinals back to the Show-Me Showdown for the third time under Goodwin. Benton lost both games in Columbia and returned with the fourth-place trophy for Class 4. “There is a lot of drive there to get back,” All-State guard Mallory McAndrews said. “That was the best two weeks of our lives. We want to go back. That is one of our goals. “I say there is a little pressure. We have a little target on our back. It will be a whole lot different year. We will have to learn to play together and not let the pressure get to us.” Six of the eight players that played in the third-place game last spring return for Benton off a 20-10 campaign. The expectation for Goodwin doesn’t change despite the postseason success last winter. “We are still going in and trying

to compete at a high level,” Goodwin said. “Come out and guard and try to be physical. Try to push the tempo and make sure we work hard to do it better than everyone else.” Please see BENTON’S/Page 3

CENTRAL BOYS

Rebuild with young core continues under Musser

By JON DYKSTRA St. Joseph News-Press

Rebuilding a program isn’t easy and often has bumps in the road. The 2013-14 season was one of those bumps for the Central boys’ program. The Indians finished the year with a 3-21 record and were winless in the Suburban Red Conference in the second year of Cy Musser’s tenure as coach. In Neal Hook’s final year as coach, the Indians finished 21-6 and advanced to sectionals. They fell in sectionals to Lee’s Summit West. After Hook became athletic director, Musser took the reins of the program. In his first year as coach, 2012-13, Central again returned to the sectional round of the state tournament after a 12-13 regular season. After the turbulent season last year, this year’s edition of the Indians is looking forward and trying to re-establish the winning culture the program had before. “(I want) to see that they are competing. From top to bottom right now, this is about as competitive of a group as I have had,”

Musser said. “They get a chance to compete every day in practice. We have not necessarily had that in years past, where maybe it was our first five and our second five and then there was a bit of a drop off. But this year from top to bottom our players are very similar so we’ve had some very good practices with guys competing. “So I really look for them to compete in games and I think that is going to translate into some wins early on.” While the Indians do have to replace swingman Kyle Fox, who led the team in scoring last season, they return a strong nucleus of young players who earned valuable experience last season. The key to the season will be how these young players develop. “We are returning a lot of guys with a lot of experience and we played a lot of young people last year and we’ll still be young this season.” Musser said. “(We need to see) some maturity and growth to see where we are and see how much we’ve improved in the offseason.” Musser is counting on his young backcourt to take the biggest steps this

season. Jake Hill and Matt Austin return to the lineup. Austin averaged nine points a game as a freshman last season. “(I expect the whole team to improve) just because they were so young last season and they’ve had a chance to mature physically,” Musser said. “Jake Hill, we know what he’s going to give us night in and night out. Guys like Matt Austin and Jaiden Bristol that were able to see some minutes for us last year that were streaky at times as freshmen, but we are looking for some big improvements as sophomores.” Even with Hill being a junior, he will be looked to as a leader for this young group. “(Hill) is definitely one of our leaders. He leads by example with how hard he plays and we are hoping that rubs off on some of the other guys. We’ve had some good practices and he’s a big reason why,” Musser said. Central will be tested early with two tournaments — at Liberty and Liberty North – before the end of the year. Jon Dykstra can be reached at jon.dykstra@newspressnow.com. CENTRAL GIRLS

Indians begin French’s 2nd season with plenty to prove by Howat and Macy McClure were on the junior varsity team last year, but were forced to play varsity minutes during camps over the summer. “We just kept our chemistry going and even in the offseason we would see each other in the hallway and say hi, we just kept this relationship up,” Wilson said. “I feel like that will work out on the court to keep our chemistry.” And while a 5-5 conference mark and third-place finish may not scream contender to the rest of Central’s opponents, that is just where the Indians — who have not won a conference title since 2008 — want to be. Whether it is a clock winding down during sprints, an expectation from their opponents or the lack of a state championship banner hanging from the rafters, these girls are not shy about setting lofty aspirations for themselves. “I think our goals are limitless,” Pfleiderer said. “We all have one goal in mind and it’s state. If people think we’re shooting too high, then we have something to prove to you because that’s our goal.” Chris Bils can be reached at chris.bils@newspressnow.com. Central forward Goldie Woody goes up for a shot as Savannah’s Kelby Williams tries to block it during a game in February at Central High School.

As the first Thursday practice of basketball season wraps up, Central girls coach Jessica French stands at center court in the Central High School gymnasium and gives out instructions for the day’s final activity. Anyone familiar with early-season basketball practices can probably guess the gist of what is about to happen. The Indians are about to run. Back and forth they go, touching each sideline before sprinting back and doing it again. There is a time limit and an assistant coach watching the finish line to see how many players don’t make it before the clock reaches zero. Each miss means another downand-back for the entire group, and the first couple of time limits are ridiculously hard. French wants to make sure her team gets in shape. And while they are tired by the end, the Indians do not break. The look on each one of their faces says they want to do whatever it takes to reach the finish line before the clock strikes zero. “I think the word that best describes these girls is hungry,” French said. “They’re hungry to

show people that they won’t be written off and they won’t be a team who is going to fall behind. I think they’re just hungry to show everybody that they’re here to battle.” Central is coming off of a 15-11 season that ended in the district semifinals with a loss to North Kansas City, but the Indians return almost every player. The only senior who graduated was Brady Rodney, who scored 10 points per game in limited action before a knee injury ended her season. They lost All-Suburban Conference Red second-team selection Kylee Williams because she moved. Still, Central remains young. This year’s team includes two seniors. Forward Mady Pfleiderer (8 points, 4 rebounds) and guard Goldie Woody (5 points) will provide the veteran core for a group that is short on age but not experience. Junior forward Alix Wilson (4 points, 4 rebounds), sophomore guard Jaelyn Haggard (10 points, 2 assists) and junior guard Paige Downey have all played meaningful varsity minutes. Another asset may be the closeness between the younger players with experience and their classmates who will be expected to step up and fill out Central’s depth. Sophomores Simone Rodney, Gab-

BENTON BOYS

Belcher’s Cardinals will have a new look By THOM HANRAHAN St. Joseph News-Press

File photo | St. Joseph News-Press

Benton’s Fabian Smith, left, goes for a shot under pressure from Odessa’s Josiah Bennett during a game last year at Springer Gymnasium.

Gary Belcher is used to winning. The Benton Cardinals aren’t. But both are working to bring success to St. Joseph’s South Side. Belcher, in his first year as coach at Benton, moves over from Kearney High School, where he won a state championship as recently as 2010. He takes over a Benton team that went 4-21 last year. But Belcher, a Central graduate, is back home in St. Joe and says things are looking up at his new coaching home. Benton held tryouts the first week of November and 60-plus students came out for basketball. Of that group, 22 have become varsity and junior varsity Cardinals. “I couldn’t be more pleased,” Belcher said. “I think over the summer we had around 70 kids playing and had a great offseason in the fall. “The kids that didn’t participate in fall sports did a great job in the weight room and are getting better as athletes.” That enthusiasm and a fresh start with a fresh coach might be just what the Benton program needs. Senior guard Fabian Smith has been part of the Benton varsity squad since his freshman year. In Smith’s time on the team, the Cardinals have won nine games. But he says things are changing. “I played (against Belcher’s teams) my freshman and sophomore years and his teams were always physical,” Smith said. “He is trying to instill in us to be more physical and not let people beat around on us.” Smith said the players are developing a sense of discipline that will

translate to more wins and being able to put up points and get stops. “We will have more scoring and be better on defense,” he said. “And we will try to play under control this year, because we were out of control a lot of times last year. We were one of the highest turnover teams last year.” Belcher said the 2014-15 Cardinals will have a good mix, but will have just four seniors. And while that kind of youth will come with growing pains, he has been through that before and it didn’t turn out too badly. At Kearney, he learned to lay a foundation. “The first year in, we kind of struggled quite a bit and pinpointed a group of freshmen, eighth-graders, etc.,” Belcher said. “In fact, that eighth-grade group my first year at Kearney is the one that went on to place second as juniors and win a state championship as seniors. “Hopefully, we can make that learning curve a little faster, but at the same time I think we need to lay a solid foundation for what lies ahead.” But Benton can’t fast forward, and so Belcher said seniors like Smith will be those providing that roadmap to future success. “We are probably going to lean on (Smith) quite a bit,” Belcher said. “We have three other seniors that for whatever reason didn’t play last year that we are going to rely on a little bit. “Those three kids, from the standpoint of being older and competed in other sports, will be able to help us.” For his part, Smith said the new coach and the new attitude of getting better every day has elevated his

game. Last year, he said, he would just go out on the floor and try to go one-on-one. Now, he sees four others he can count on. “I don’t try to do that anymore,” Smith said. “We are trying to get everyone involved. It has improved my game by looking for my teammates more and getting them the ball has helped us out.” Belcher said his time at Kearney exposed him to the teams his Benton squad will face this year. And he knows it is going to be a challenge trying to build a program in a league filled with established programs with entrenched coaches. “I would like to think that we will be competitive,” he said. “But at the same time, we also understand that a lot of these coaches have had their programs in place for several years and hopefully we can overcome that as we gain experience.” To the fourth-year varsity senior, the present looks as bright as the future the first-year coach hopes for. Smith said this year will be different. “I feel that we have been better than any year that we have been going into,” he said. “I think this will be a good year. It is a new change, new coach and a new system that fits our players very well. “We are much more aggressive on defense. Our offense is a lot easier. We don’t take two minutes to move the ball around and then take a shot. We get right to business. We want to get out and go and run down that court.” Thom Hanrahan can be reached at thom.hanrahan@newspressnow.com. Follow him on Twitter: @SJNPsports.

Benton’s McAndrews earned all-state honors last year CONTINUED FROM Page 1 The success of the Cardinals will lie squarely on guards McAndrews — who averaged 15.3 points per game — and Daejah Bernard, who tallied 9.7 points per game. McAndrews drained 91 3-pointers last year to provide an outside threat for Benton, while Bernard starred in driving the lane. “I think most games we will have two of the better kids on the floor at all times,” Goodwin said. “It is two kids you will have to make a conscious effort to know where they are at.” Benton also returns starting forward Morgan Domann, who stepped up to a bigger role in the late-season push. Top reserves Cheryl Holly and Maleah Lankford are back, while sophomores Madi Reynolds and Mia Stillman return after getting their feet wet in varsity action. Guard Joraya Maag returns after missing last year with a torn ACL and the senior guard possesses skills at shooting and playing inside that could help fill the void of graduated starters Lucy Mollett and Lindsay Doolan.

“Last year really helped our confidence and getting new people like Joraya will help us a lot,” McAndrews said. “I think we are pretty confident right now.” Goodwin knows his squad will face tough challenges in conference play, which includes a Chillicothe team that came on hot last year, while Smithville and Cameron shared the title last season. In district play, Kearney drops down from Class 5 and immediately poses a key challenger for Benton. The two met last year in the championship game of the Kearney Tournament and the Bulldogs won. Benton will again rely on its forte of defense in a quest to return to the postseason again but an influx of young talent could mean winning in different ways. “The one thing I thought I noticed this summer, I thought we took a little step backwards defensively,” Goodwin said. “We lost two good defenders in Lucy and Lindsay. I think we had the ability to maybe be a little bit better on offense.” Cody Thorn can be reached at cody.thorn@newspressnow.com. Follow him on Twitter: @SJNPSports.

LAFAYETTE GIRLS

Irish leaning on youthful experience Lafayette returns 4 starters from 17-9 team By CHRIS SCHOONOVER St. Joseph News-Press

Despite not having a senior on the roster, Lafayette is returning a winning tradition that the team has picked up the last two seasons. The Fighting Irish were starting four freshmen at the end of last season en route to a 17-9 record and an appearance in the district title game. “We feel like over the last two or three years that we’ve improved every year,” Lafayette coach Ryan Madison said. “It was one less (win) last season but we made it farther in districts. I feel like at the end of the year that we were a better team. “When you get two or three classes in a row that have had success, it breeds success. They expect to win every night.” Lafayette lost last year’s starting point guard Ashley Hinkle, who is now playing at the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth, Kan. “We just have to stay focused and not turn the ball over because she didn’t do that,” junior guard D.J. Weston said. “She was our best defender so we have to stay down and guard.” With the loss of Hinkle, the Irish will lean on Amber Kneale to run the show despite playing out of position. “(Hinkle) did a lot last year but we have Amber Kneale who ran the point for us this summer and she did a great job,” Madison said. “She’s really more of a two, but she did a good job. We expect her to do fine.” Ashlyn Dotson is returning for her

sophomore year in the post after averaging 11.6 points per game to go along with 7 rebounds per game. Another key returner is sophomore Maddie Book, who averaged 7.7 points per game last season and 2.2 assists per game. “Maddie and Ashlyn put in more work than anybody,” Madison said. “They are in the gym constantly. Those are two kids that you never have to question if they’re putting the work in. They had a great summer and I expect them to keep continuing to improve and the sky is the limit for both of them.” Madison believes he has five or six girls that can handle the ball in the open court, giving his offense more options in the full-court. “We always want to push it on offense,” Madison said. “We look half-court oriented but when we get a rebound we want to go. In the past, I don’t think we had the depth to do that but this year we will have more options to do that.” With back-to-back winning seasons and the potential to be conference contenders for the next few years, the Irish do not want to let up despite being a young team. “I think these kids just hate to lose,” Madison said. “I think they understand that you can predict down the road that we’re going to be really good but you never know what’s going to happen. They want to win right now.” Chris Schoonover can be reached at chris.schoonover@newspressnow.com. Follow him on Twitter: @SJNPSports

aforementioned players means there will be a lot of scoring punch left to replace. Kurth, now at Northwest Missouri State, finished as the only player scoring in double figures last year (15.7 points per game) on a very balanced team. “It isn’t so much about replacing two really solid players that have done a lot in our program in Billy (Cook) and Zav (Kurth); it is about somebody emerging and becoming the next one,” Neff said. Gary Wilkinson is the top returning scorer from last year at 8.2 points per game, while Chester Goudeau added 7.1 points per game. Caleb Bennett (4.6 ppg) and Riley McKay (2.9 ppg) are in reserve roles for Lafayette. Wilkinson and McKay both started in the state championship game, while Goudeau and Drew Cortez each entered off the bench. “I feel good about our team, as a whole, right now,” said Wilkinson, who will don glasses on the court this year. “We are getting there. You can tell we are missing a little bit, but we are starting to click and find out who

we are. I think we will be fine. We play hard, that is what will carry us through the season.” The postseason run last year for Lafayette had an extra bonus for the underclassmen who may be seen this year — extra practice. Some of that aided in the development of O’Shaye Kirby, Nick Hubbard and Karter Woodbury, all juniors who could see extended time on varsity. The depth will be a key part later in the season for the Irish, who went 25-5 last year and are defending Midland Empire Conference champions. Early parts of this season will be a battle for starting roles and Neff trying to find the right rotation. “We will play a lot of players early and the cream rises,” Neff said. “No one will be the ‘guy.’ We need a lot of guys to buy into and believe, and come together. We are well on the way to that. “They will be underrated; there will be doubt in the gym and out of this gym of who we are and who we can be.”

BISHOP LEBLOND BOYS

Senior-heavy Golden Eagles look to build off district title

By CHRIS SCHOONOVER St. Joseph News-Press

Last season, Bishop LeBlond knocked off Lawson to claim the district title, and with two of its top players still on the roster, the Golden Eagles believe they have a shot to get back. Connor Haynes was an alldistrict and first-team AllMidland Empire Conference selection as a junior. As a senior, he will assume more of a leadership role. “This summer, we’ve been in the gym three or four days a week when we didn’t have football,” said Haynes, who averaged 12 points, 8 rebounds per game. “We’ve been working on stuff that we didn’t do well last year. “The seniors came with a lot of leadership and were very vocal. We just have to pick that up from where they left off.” LeBlond defeated Lawson in the district championship last season 63-54 for its first district title since 2008, giving something for the Eagles to build on. “The goal is to obviously build on that, but I’ve been around long enough to know that when you’re the champions, you have a bullseye on your back,” said secondyear coach Tom Tewell. “It forces you to step up your game, and I think they will.” Joining Haynes as the only other returning starter is Jake Modlin, an all-district selection who averaged 8 points and 7 rebounds last year. Haynes and Modlin’s continuity from years of playing alongside each other will be key if the Eagles want to remain in conference and district competition. “We just know what each of us want to do,” Haynes said. “If he’s going to cut, I know where he’s going to be. If I go one place, he knows my move. We just know where we’re going to be on the court.” LeBlond graduated four seniors including three starters in Matthew McCullough, Pierce Jarrett and Jon Zuptich. The Eagles are senior-heavy with seven on the roster, allowing Tewell to do more things on both sides of the ball with players having a lot of minutes under their belts. “I hope it’s a little more

Bishop LeBlond forward Connor Haynes takes a shot under pressure from Barstow guard Cody Adkins during a Class 3 sectional game last year in Excelsior Springs, Mo. flexible in year two and we are able to add layers on to what we did last year,” Tewell said. “Hopefully in certain matchups we are able to do certain things.” Seniors Cort Patrick, Jack Schanze and Quinten Obermier all registered considerable minutes last season and will be relied on in a bigger role coming into their high school finales. Many fresh off football season, Haynes believes it will take a few weeks for the grid-

iron mentality to disappear and for them to get into basketball shape. “The first couple of weeks will probably have a lot of fouls but soon enough we’ll get into basketball mode,” Haynes said. “It takes about three weeks to get into basketball shape where you can run up and down for 20 or 30 minutes.” Chris Schoonover can be reached at chris.schoonover@newspressnow.com. BISHOP LEBLOND GIRLS

Sullivan continues to build Golden Eagles girls program By THOMAS HUITT-JOHNSON St. Joseph News-Press

Bishop LeBlond used to be among the upper echelon of district teams. Just like the girls soccer, softball, cross country, tennis and volleyball teams, the Golden Eagles were always a threat to make a deep run in the postseason. And then nearly the whole team graduated following the 2010-11 season. The following year, then coach Wayne Miller’s last year at the helm, they plummeted to a twowin team. Then came Jeff Sullivan, and LeBlond improved closer to the team that made it to three straight district championships prior to Miller’s finale. Now in his third season, Sullivan isn’t about just improving the mindset of his team. He wants results. “The top-tier group is going to be tough to handle. We’ve got nine strong right now,” said Sullivan, who will have 13 total players to divvy between junior varsity and varsity. “We bring back a lot of experience, four seniors and three juniors that all played a lot. “Coming into it two years ago, I didn’t know what to expect, and when I came over, the girls just really bought into what I wanted them to do. It’s been a really good group. I’ve been blessed to be (at LeBlond), and it’s just been a great group of girls to work with for the last three years now.” In his first two seasons, the former Central assistant produced consecutive winning seasons. The Eagles went from 2-21 to 13-9 to 167. Though they lost key members from last year’s team, the Eagles like their chances. Returning for LeBlond at point guard is Emily Madden, a scrappy player known for her defense. Post players Megan Dawkins and Tyler Reid, the leading scorer and rebounder for her team, also come back to attack the glass. Both were All-Midland Empire Conference picks. Last year’s guard duo of Dayle Dickens and Mackie Browning graduated, but the Eagles’ depth from 2013 had to play due to many injuries suffered. That gives them more experience this year. Experience is something that helped Sullivan snag the job in April 2012. After he graduated from Missouri State and received his master’s degree at Northwest Missouri State, Sullivan coached at Central for 12 seasons. Then, he finally became a head coach for varsity. In order to have a winning team, Sullivan said he didn’t need to do anything magical. The girls were willing to do what he asked. A season in, it showed. Without a conference win in

File photo | St. Joseph News-Press

Bishop LeBlond forward Tyler Reid goes to the basket during first round play of the Class 3 District 16 Tournament last year in Lathrop, Mo. 2011, the Eagles started out 3-0 in the Midland Empire Conference in Sullivan’s inaugural year. They were bounced in the opening game of districts the year before Sullivan arrived and are 2-2 in such games since. Many of the girls shared success off the basketball court, sporting purple and gold during the different seasons for winning teams. Sullivan hopes to use that to his advantage, though coming in he was a bit worried. “The girls who (play multiple sports), they do a lot. Going to different camps, I don’t know that I could have done it when I was their age, what we ask of them now, and it just becomes a whole different level of being prepared,” Sullivan said. “They just put in so much time for the school. And it paid off for them … they were pretty successful (in other sports), so we hope to continue to ride that wave of success and talent and hard work that they’re putting in. It’s a long four-month season.” With that in mind, perhaps the Eagles are returning to elite status in basketball yet again. They’ll find out a lot quickly. Their first game is against Lathrop, the team that ended LeBlond’s season last year in the district semifinals. Thomas Huitt-Johnson can be reached at thomas.hj@newspressnow.com. ST. JOSEPH CHRISTIAN BOYS

Lions return every player from last season

By THOMAS HUITT-JOHNSON St. Joseph News-Press

File photo | St. Joseph News-Press

Christian guard Matthew Corkins, right, goes up for a shot in a game against DeKalb last year at Christian Gymnasium.

St. Joseph Christian coach Clay Linebach learned a lot about his team in his debut season at the helm. As for himself? “Not to ride the roller coaster like your players do; you have to keep your cool,” Linebach said. “You’re the main guy that everybody looks to to kind of settle down when they’re fired up. We were up 30 on Tarkio last year and they got too excited, and we ended up losing the game in the second half. Just trying to keep them level-headed and myself level-headed is the hardest thing. As an ex-player you think, ‘Oh we’re up 30 we’ll just coast and shoot’ and it just absolutely backfires on the players. The main

thing is don’t ride the highs and lows and just stay even-keel.” The former Central guard now knows what it’s like to run his own team from courtside. And he is already ahead of schedule in year two. In the first week of practice, Linebach only had one player who could participate due to football season overlapping the beginning of the basketball season again. This year, although the same situation exists, Linebach knows his team — who will be playing and how they play. His biggest challenge now is to handle the chemistry between which guys play well on the court at the same time. And that’s another new problem for the recent Missouri Western graduate. In 2013, Linebach didn’t have enough players to fill out a 12-man roster. It didn’t matter who was on

vidual success to help the team. Starting at point guard is Matthew Corkins. Next to him at shooting guard is Ben Dahlgren. Both handled the same spots last season, so Christian benefits with at least four of its five starters slotted the exact same. Coming off a losing season for the first time since 2009-10, the Lions expect a strong showing at districts. Christian won titles in 2010 and 2011 to advance to the playoffs. If they win it again, the Lions may very well have to go through host DeKalb. The Tigers are coached by Clay’s older brother, Dru Linebach. “We both hate playing each other,” Clay said. the court at which time because they were all going to have to play. This year, the coach expects to have 19 players, meaning the Lions will have a junior varsity team. Next season, the second-year coach hopes to have a freshman team if the numbers play out the way they should. A big turnaround for a squad that went 4-12 a season ago. Good thing he returns 100 percent of last year’s team. Trevor Hartigan and Logan Morrison appear down low again for the Lions. The tandem garnered 8 rebounds a game last year each with Hartigan averaging 12 points and Morrison hovering around 13 a game. New Juhl takes over Lions By CHRIS SCHOONOVER St. Joseph News-Press

After a two years as an assistant under his father, Mark Juhl, Steve Juhl has taken over the girls basketball program at St. Joseph Christian. The Lions finished their 201314 campaign with just one win and two wins the season before, obviously leaving room for improvement in Steve Juhl’s first season. “There hasn’t been a lot of winning and that’s a negative thing in that it can be hard for the players when it’s time to get up for another season,” Steve Juhl said. “It can also be a positive thing. They probably don’t have a lot of high expectations so if we can do better than we’ve done in the past, then we’re making strides. “They know how to play the game and some of them (know it) pretty well already. Anything I can do to enhance that in any way I can is what we’ll be looking to do.” Coaching under his father, Steve Juhl will continue a similar coaching style but will add his own individuality into the program. “Since I’m taking over for my dad, I think he did a great job,” Steve Juhl said. “I don’t think we have to change a lot. I would like to see some more toughness and physicality because that’s how I played and so that’s how I teach. “We did start day one being physical. Not playing dirty or fouling but helping the girls realized they have a right to their space.” The Lions have 10 girls out for the team this year, with three seniors, one junior and the rest are freshmen.

File photo | St. Joseph News-Press

Christian’s Courtney Maudlin, left, looks to pass under pressure during a game last year against DeKalb. “I was thinking there was going to be 12 or 13, but a number I heard when I came over for a meeting was 11, so that was alarming,” Juhl said. “Ten is a good number. We can work with 10.” Returning for Christian will be seniors Taylor Berthiaume, Briana Burgess, Courtney Maudlin and junior forward Lexi Shearingin. “We’ll still be young,” Juhl said. “Of our 10, six of them are freshmen. I’m excited to be a part of it and see what we can accomplish. I don’t know what the expectations out of us are but ours is to compete with whoever we play against. “We’ve got some pretty good freshmen so it’s not like we can’t use them for subbing and keeping everybody fresh. But with 10 girls, you’re a little limited on your sub packages.”
