POINTED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION Northwest coach McCollum’s youthful energy presides over alma mater’s resurgence
By SAM ROBINSON St. Joseph News-Press
M
ARYVILLE, Mo. — Second thoughts continued to creep into Ben McCollum’s mind.
A role player on some of Northwest Missouri State’s most successful teams, McCollum left basketball in his past and used his degree to procure a job at Wells Fargo in Kansas City. Luckily for Northwest, his foray didn’t take, and the finance major made an odd financial decision. “I called my future wife ... I told her, ‘Hey, I’m thinking about being a coach.’ She goes, ‘Oh yeah, in Kansas City here?’ I said, ‘No, I’m thinking about living in Maryville and volunteering,’” said McCollum, now beginning his fourth year as the Bearcats’ head men’s basketball coach. “She thought I was crazy.” McCollum’s whim — which led to the Storm Lake, Iowa, native spending a year volunteering on then-Bearcats coach Steve Tappmeyer’s staff — induced two years of a long-distance relationship with he and his eventual wife Michelle, at that time a teacher at Liberty. It also unearthed a potential rising talent in the coaching ranks. Five years later, McCollum became the second-youngest active Division II coach — at just 27 — and began a process that led to his alma mater returning to the top of the MIAA Conference last season. “It meant a lot because I was here from the jump,” said 5-foot7 senior point guard DeShaun Cooper, one of McCollum’s first recruits in 2009, of rebounding after two losing seasons to win a share of the conference regular-season championship. “I felt like we started it together, and I feel like I’ll always be a part of it.” One of the more electric MIAA players, Cooper stayed loyal to McCollum despite back-to-back years where the Bearcats missed the conference tournament. Cooper’s on-court talent exceeds McCollum’s, but the coach’s years scrimmaging similar performers in 2002 and 2003 — current Switzerland League player Kelvin Parker and M Club hall of famer Scott Fleming —increased his oncourt understanding and ability to earn trust from his current
roster. A junior college transfer from North Iowa Area Community College, McCollum’s curiosity for the sport intensified under Tappmeyer even though he didn’t play big minutes for the Bearcats’ first Elite Eight team (2002) nor the NCAA Division II Tournament follow-up the next year. “When you look statistically, it’s misleading. A lot of years he would’ve played a lot more minutes and had some gaudy stats,” said Tappmeyer, who retired from Northwest after 21 seasons in 2009 but returned to the coaching ranks for Missouri-St. Louis a little more than a year later. “The Elite Eight team for about month of practice couldn’t beat the second team. A lot of that came from having such good teammates that would bring it every day. He had a very significant role not only on the floor but just being a great teammate.” But even as a finance major, McCollum delved into leadership literature and had coaching in the back of his mind but didn’t see it as a viable career option until he entered the business world. Once committed after leaving Wells Fargo, McCollum knew he made the right decision. A four-year assistant apprenticeship at Emporia State followed a two-year stint under Tappmeyer, and it led to his rapid rise into replacing his mentor. But books and observations from a less prominent seat on the bench didn’t fully prepare McCollum for heading a program. “It was a great feeling because I thought I had all the answers at that point. When I was an assistant coach, I knew everything,” McCollum said. “It was like, ‘Oh my goodness.’ I always had a goal to be a head coach by 27, and I got it when I

Blending an intense, defensive-obsessed approach with mostly positive direction, the 31-year-old coach is able to vacillate successfully between off-court confidant and gameday leader. “It’s an equal relationship. He gets along with us. Besides basketball, you can talk to him just like a teammate, but we know once we get on the court who’s boss and we just follow him,” Cooper said. Equipped with a roster committed to defending and willing to accept a slow-paced attack, the Bearcats, who finished 10th in the MIAA in 2011, turned in a 22-7 statement season in 201112. They allowed 62.6 points per game — first in the conference
for the second straight year — while Cooper and an imported off-guard contingent helped amp up Northwest’s offense to create a formidable squad that didn’t wilt. This season will prove key for McCollum, however. Can he establish a winning tradition in Maryville and begin to guide the program toward the plane on which it hovered when he occupied a roster spot, or was the swift shift in conference supremacy a one-time occurrence that isn’t likely to repeat in a now-stacked league? “I think everybody sees the results, the conference championship, the wins here or there. More, does the culture continue to grow? Do we continue to get quality kids?” he said. “We don’t try to make this place anything that it’s not. When they come in, we don’t roll out the red carpet.” McCollum didn’t waver
when it appeared his system headed toward a crash, and the Bearcats’ patience became rewarded. They appear on solid footing at present. But due to an unusual career arc that saw him attain top status at his school at an extremely young age, should McCollum’s method produce similar returns, do his goals extend beyond the city that reshaped his life? “I was lucky,” McCollum said of getting this job so soon. “I don’t really think about that. I really try to focus on this. I don’t really have any interest. I haven’t gotten any offers or anything like that. Goal-wise, I like it here I guess would be my answer. “I love my alma mater. I love the kids, and this is where I want to be.” Sam Robinson can be reached at sam.robinson@newspressnow.com. Follow him on Twitter: @SJNPSports.
NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE MEN
Bearcats’ seasoned cast guns for repeat title amid expectations
By SAM ROBINSON St. Joseph News-Press
MARYVILLE, Mo. — Enjoying a bounceback season few envisioned, Northwest Missouri State now enters a pivotal follow-up campaign. Was last year’s surprise MIAA regular-season championship and NCAA Division II Tournament charge a fluke, or are the Bearcats a legitimate toptier program in a nowbloated conference? “I think our guys understand it’s not a one-time deal,” Northwest fourthyear coach Ben McCollum said. “The difficult part is they haven’t had success at this level. How do you handle that success?” Unlike the Northwest women’s encore flop to their transcendent national semifinal season which featured none of the top three players from the year before, the men’s squad brings back nearly its entire cast. The same cast that, save for select transfers, became familiar with losing streaks that dominated
the previous two seasons. Now faced with expectations, the Bearcats’ upperclassman-laden squad (227, 15-5 MIAA last season) can realistically aim for similar territory despite being the only top-four team in the preseason coaches’ poll without consistent success. “We are really happy and satisfied with what we did last year, and we love the feeling. Now we just want to work hard to get more of that,” said Northwest junior guard Bryston Williams, a Lafayette graduate. “We want to just get to where we can this year and not focus on the past.” Among the reasons to look forward is the experience and talent residing at Williams’ position. The Bearcats’ off-guard spot took a significant step last season with several transfers’ arrival, and three key performers return alongside MIAA player of the year candidate DeShaun Cooper at point guard. And each excels in a different facet and has another

Williams boasts topflight defensive ability, while fellow 2011 transfers Alex Sullivan (a 3-point sharp shooter) and DeAngelo Hailey (Northwest’s second-leading returning scorer at 10.2 points per game) add to a diverse rotation that will see more minutes this year. Crafty shooter Kyle Haake
graduated, and low-scoring starter and D-I import Justin Clark left the team for personal reasons. This opens up minutes for Sullivan (47 percent long-range connection rate) in particular. The former Akron player’s already shattered his career high twice in Northwest’s first three games after averaging just 14 minutes last year, eighth on the team.
“With our guards returning, I feel like our chemistry’s better, and we know each other’s game,” said Williams, who averaged 4.6 points per game last year, playing the seventh-most minutes. “We have so many that can play, come off the bench, start, it doesn’t matter. We all have a role to where we can contribute in a positive way and bring something else to the table.” The only question: can the Bearcats’ three post players replace Jake Reinders’ stellar production. Dillon Starzl returns at center but hasn’t produced on Reinders’ level yet. Kyle Schlake will provide depth inside and play alongside Starzl whenever Northwest trots out its biggest lineup. The Bearcats’ only pure power forward: redshirt sophomore Grant Cozad, Starzl’s teammate at Kearney High School who watched Elijah Allen and Reinders thrive at his position the past two seasons. “(Allen) really taught
me a lot about my faceup game, and then Jake Reinders, he taught me just to work hard. His work ethic was extremely high,” the 6-foot-7 Cozad said. “I just tried to branch off of that, put the two together and keep adding onto it.” McCollum insists he’s not concerned about the post position — dubbing Cozad the best scoring big he’s had in his Northwest tenure — despite two of the three performers’ lack of any rotation experience. The posts’ development looks to be the biggest factor in the Bearcats’ challenging for a championship again. That and perhaps some issues of recreating the againstthe-odds mindset now that odds are in their favor. “Do you play with that same sense of urgency, that same sense of hunger that you played with last year?” McCollum said. “That’s gonna be the most challenging part of the season.” Sam Robinson can be reached at sam.robinson@newspressnow.com. to the top of the MIAA. The veteran coach knows what the task at hand is and can draw parallels to the effort he put forth in Durango, Colo. He guided the Skyhawks to a 16-13 record in his first season. Two years later, Fort Lewis was 26-4 and in the NCAA Tourney. “I’ll probably know a lot more at the end of this year,” Kellogg said of the progress. “At Fort Lewis, I had players from an NCAA team the two years previous, but no depth. Here, maybe we have more depth. “ The depth includes a pair of new starting guards in senior Victoria Naylor, a former Division I player at Towson (Md.), and junior Monique Stevens, a transfer from Southeast Community College. Center Timber Schechinger, who led the team in scoring in a season-opening win over Quincy, also expects to play a big scoring role as a freshman. Kellogg also points to sophomore forward Annie Mathews, senior center Alexis Boeh and junior guard Meridee Scott, along with Marnin and Thayer as players that will play big roles for the Bearcats this winter. The biggest difference for Northwest will be how the players play. Kellogg admits pushing the players harder in practice than
they had been used to in the past. The ideology this year will focus on playing good defense, rebounding and running the offense. “I think the biggest difference is the intensity on defense and playing an up-tempo game,” Boeh said. “We are buying into the system on defense and the defense transitions to the offense. I love it. I’m having so much fun, and I’m excited to see where it is headed.” At Fort Lewis, the formula included building with freshmen and adding transfer pieces as necessary. That same philosophy will apply at Northwest, although the fruits of the labor may not be seen right away. The learning curve for the players had to be slowed down for the Bearcats, which has tested Kellogg’s patience. There’s no dearth to that element for the coach in this potentially arduous process. “We have 15 players, and all 15 are brand new to the coaching the staff,” Kellogg said. “We have got to teach patience throughout the season. We only had 18 times (in practice) to get everything in before our first game that counts.” Cody Thorn can be reached at cody.thorn@newspressnow.com. Follow him on Twitter: @SJNPSports.

MISSOURI WESTERN MEN
Smith taking more control in hopes of turnaround
By THOMAS HUITT-JOHNSON St. Joseph News-Press
Missouri Western coach Tom Smith decided to take more initiative this offseason. In deciding how to build a once-prominent program back up, one small changeup clicked in his head. Smith wants to take control of his own substitution patterns again. Just three seasons ago, the veteran coach took his squad to the NCAA Division II Tournament, but three seasons ago seems too long ago to even remember. That 2009-10 team went in with an 18-11 record and was eliminated in the first round. After two straight losing seasons, and seven out of the past nine, it was time that he made a change in his tactics. “I’m much more performance-based. What I see is what I get out. I don’t let these people play because it’s just the cycle. You earn your time out here,” Smith said after his club’s season-opening 75-44 win against Sterling College. “When I did it before, seven or eight guys would play and that’s about it.
I think we can get some minutes out of people, and it depends on how they’re playing.” Times have changed since Smith last saw a championship-caliber team. With the years of early-2000s players Lamont Turner, Larry Taylor and Damon Bailey behind them, the Griffons have yet to find replacements to fit their mold. They failed with Division I transfers P’Allen Stinnett and James Harvey. And last year’s duo of T.J. Johnson and Lavonte Douglas couldn’t win by themselves. In 2012, newcomers look to finally be a part of the tradition in Smith’s legacy. Dzenan Mrkaljevic, a native of Bijeljina, Bosnia, can shoot the ball from the 3-point line and adds depth down low. Along with the Kankakee (Ill.) Community College transfer, another JUCO player will help the Griffons rebound this season. Cedric Clinkscales from Roane State (Tenn.) Community College starts at forward and already has displayed ability to maneuver his way inside big bodies to score points. In
points for opponents. If the Griffons can stop that, a winning season could follow. In 2011-12, 13 of the Griffons’ games were decided in the final minute; Western either needed to make a stop or had the ball for a chance to win. The Griffons only won four — most dramatically a lastsecond block by Johnson against William Jewell to help Western start 4-0. Johnson adds to the list of losses for Western, which includes Douglas and Deionta Mitchell — all three graduates. A pair of 6-foot-8 forwards — Justin Reid and Shawn Tarver — decided to leave the program, as did seldom-used guard Ladarius Frazier. Besides Clinkscales and Mrkaljevic, AlfreeFile Photo | St. Joseph News- Press Missouri Western guard James Harris ends up on his back during a man Flowers comes off game against Fort Hays State last year. Harris, the Griffons’ leading the bench to help man the post. For the most part, the returning scorer, transitions to a reserve role this year. Clinkscales said. “I’m Not rebounding well action this year. Fulton ready. MIAA, I’m coming. has led to second-chance will start at point guard.
“I feel like (our big guys) can hold their own for sure,” said Frantz, who missed the final 15 games of last season with an injury. “(Fulton) is a real good point guard. He never really gets out of control and finds the open man. And he can shoot. He can really light it up.” Back for his 25th season at the helm, Smith no longer has the weight of reaching 600 wins on his shoulders. The coach surpassed that with a 69-55 victory against Fontbonne on Nov. 12, 2011. Instead, Smith wants a top-four MIAA team, and one that can compete for a playoff bid like his teams regularly did throughout the 1990s, which helped him to 610 career wins, 440 at Western. “There’s two questions that need to be answered: One is can we take care of the ball and handle it well enough against the physical nature of the MIAA?” Smith said. “And secondly, can we rebound with everybody else?” Thomas Huitt-Johnson can be reached at thomas.hj@newspressnow.com. If Rob Edmisson’s unable to shake up Missouri Western’s status quo of the past several years, it won’t be for lack of trying. “To bring out that competitive spirit and getting them to understand not to accept being average, that takes a long time. We’re demanding every minute of every practice,” said Edmisson, the new Griffons coach who takes over for Lynn Plett after guiding NAIA Oklahoma City University to a national championship last season. “I’m sure everything I’m doing is a huge culture shock, but they’ve already experienced the benefits. We know that winning our first two games doesn’t make a season, but we understand that the sacrifices made to this point directly resulted in winning those two games.” Considering the struggles Western (7-20 last season, one .500-plus campaign in the previous five) endured in recent years, its upsets of Division I UMKC and Division II top-10-ranked Metro State (Colo.) turned a few heads. Most of the Griffons’ current nucleus doesn’t remember the last-place finishes or lengthy losing streaks, but they’re here to revive the program for a coach that’s never had a losing season in 16 years of collegiate work at the JUCO or NAIA levels. “We’re a new team — new coach, new system. We don’t even know what to expect,” said senior forward Heather Howard, a 6-3 talent who transferred from Oklahoma State. “We’re just hoping to work as hard as we can and show St. Joe and our student fans that we’re not gonna settle for ninth or 10th or wherever we were picked. “Our goal is to finish in the top three in our conference.” The MIAA player of the week in her first with the Griffons, Howard’s the most noticeable oncourt addition, but many complement her and form the center of Western’s
potential rapid rebuilding. MIAA coaches tabbed the Griffons 11th due probably to the loss of do-everything all-American Jessica Koch — the school’s all-time scoring leader who led the conference in scoring average by six-plus points last year — and a host of unknown commodities. Even if a star scorer doesn’t emerge soon, the Griffons’ depth and athleticism received a vital ignition. Diminutive speedsters JaQuitta Dever and Lanicia Lawrence commandeered two-year point guard Alicia Bell’s offensive quarterback duties, while twin sisters Sharniece and Jalissa Lewis will serve as off-thebench energizers for team that went as far as Koch did for years. As for Bell, a sixth-year senior who is still going despite enduring two torn ACLs and the birth of her now-2-year-old daughter, she looks to close her career doing what she does best: freelancing. “Having those other little guards, it really gives me a lot more room to hustle and try to go get rebounds and not have to play the entire game,” said Bell, whose grabbed at least six boards per game in her career despite measuring just 5-7. “I feel like I can be more efficient. “Last year, I felt gassed the whole game. I was trying to survive. This year, I feel I can actually play.” At a preseason practice, Bell, equipped with two bulky knee braces and limping from knee tendinitis, lumbered down court with her teammates during a grueling, workout-closing wind-sprint session. It reminds the St. Joseph native of the high-intensity style her high school coach — Brett Goodwin — preferred during Benton’s 2007 state championship season. An expanded conference that added teams with NCAA Division II Tournament pedigrees and a collection of new players learning to coexist in Edmisson’s inyour-face system make pinpointing Western’s
ascension odds difficult. Bell doesn’t know yet how the near-complete makeover will translate but feels a certain cohesion she hasn’t in a while. “It’s always good to have somebody that when you think you’re doing your best be able to dig more out of you,” Bell said. “It
was like I got that spark back in. The years before, it was kind of playing not to lose, but this year it’s kind of like going out and wanting to take something and be remembered for it.” Sam Robinson can be reached at sam.robinson@newspressnow.com. Follow him on Twitter: @SJNPSports.

Ravens full of experience Returning starters hope to fulfill lofty expectations By LOGAN JACKSON Atchison Globe

Benedictine’s Charlie Wallrapp looks to turn past a Tabor defender during the Ravens’ home opener Nov. 6. Wallrapp led the team in scoring and rebounding through six games this season.
Wallrapp takes on lead role amid youthful surroundings
By LOGAN JACKSON Atchison Globe
Benedictine looks a lot different in head coach Ryan Moody’s second year. Most of it has to do with roster composition. The Ravens graduated six seniors from last year’s team, and all six played a huge role in a 15-15 season. This year, Benedictine features only one senior, three juniors and 13 underclassmen. “Those six seniors that we had last year really had a sense of urgency,” Moody said. “Seniors always do. They established a really great tone for the team. They showed the guys how hard they need to work. We’re going to miss their presence in practice, but I’m really excited about this team.” Last year’s seniors — Tony Anderson, Elgin Caldwell, Quaran Johnson, Chris McFaul, Geno McNeil and Alex Miller — led the team in several statistical categories last season, the biggest of which was minutes played. Five of the six averaged at least 22 minutes per game last season, as Benedictine ended the season 10-8 in Heart of America Athletic Conference
play. The Ravens return only one player that averaged more than 20 minutes per game — Charlie Wallrapp, who led them in points per game and rebounds last season as a sophomore. Wallrapp expects to fill a bigger role for the Ravens this season. “We challenge him to be a leader out there,” Moody said. “Charlie has gone from deferring to the older guys to being the guy that others now defer to. There’s a transition there for that. Charlie has embraced that well so far. He just has to build on that each day.” Joining Wallrapp will be a slew of sophomores and freshmen. Five of those sophomores saw minutes as freshmen last season. “We are just a little bit faster, a little bit bigger, a little bit stronger overall,” Moody said. “But we’ve got a lot of inexperience. I think you can win with freshmen and sophomores, and we expect to. We brought them in to play and play well. We’re very excited about the group, but I do think there will be a learning curve.” Junior Steve O’Brien and sophomores Brett Fisher, Jallen Messersmith and Jonathan
Anaekwe will likely see a minutes increase during the 201213 season. All four appeared in at least 19 games last year. Joining the returners will be a handful of freshmen that could see some playing time early — especially at the point guard position. Vequan Clark and John Harris join the Ravens, who went without a true point guard for most of last season. Caldwell and Johnson split time at the point last year but didn’t possess a true skill set for the one position. “To (Quaran’s) and Elgin’s credit, they were combos having to play the point,” Moody said. “We’ve got guys this year that are a little more used to playing the 1. They have a point guard mentality.” Moody said the team would still focus on its defensive pressure, something that the Ravens did very well last season. After losing its opener this year, Benedictine rattled off five straight wins, only allowing one opponent to score more than 60 points in that span.
Benedictine not only has expectations but the experience to hopefully back it up. The Ravens were picked to finish third and received one first-place vote in the Heart of America Athletic Conference preseason poll, and the Ravens return 10 players that saw action last season. “Experience is a good thing to have,” coach Chad Folsom said. “We return three starters from last year, and we’ve got players back that played a lot. We’ve got a good mix of returners and new players.” Of those returners, three are seniors — Kelsey Anselmi, Erin Murphy and Liz Stinson. Anselmi and Murphy started nearly every game for Benedictine last season, and Stinson was the first player off the bench. “Those three have been doing a great job of being leaders,” Folsom said. “That’s a key for us. They are all driven, focused. They’re bringing a lot of fire and passion, and I think it’s passing along to the other girls.” In addition, sophomore Jackie Ziesel, a Bishop LeBlond product, provides a third returning sophomore. Katie Barr also returns after spending some time in the starting lineup last season. Benedictine did graduate its leading scorers from a year ago — Kelsey Wolfe and Teresa Zienkewicz. However, two transfers should step right in for the Ravens — Justice Payne and April Miller. Payne played at Northern Oklahoma-Enid Junior College,
and Miller was at Butler (Kan.) Community College last season. “Justice has hit some clutch shots during her career,” Folsom said. “I look for her to be a big factor for us this year. April is strong and physical. She’ll give us some of that physical nature that Teresa brought.” Another returner that will play a big role for the Ravens is Rosie Youngstrom. She and Anselmi formed a point guard duo that was tops in the HAAC. “I feel like we’ve got two of the best point guards in the league in Kelsey and Rosie,” Folsom said. “They were No. 1 and No. 2 last year in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio. Kelsey was No. 2 in the league in total assists. I’m expecting them to be at the top again this year. What’s nice is that the two of them can play together some.” Benedictine will also add Chayla Rutledge and Jayde Reid back into the mix. Both were redshirted last season after suffering injuries. Folsom said the two just add to the depth and shooting ability. “I think we’ve got multiple players that can put it in the hole,” he said. “I think we’ve also got multiple players that can shoot it. Last year, I thought teams could really key on Kelsey because she was our primary 3-point shooter. I feel that this year we have a lot of players that can hit that 3-point shot.” Benedictine ran out to a 7-1 record, including a five-game winning streak.
Benedictine guard Kelsey Anselmi dribbles through a Briar Cliff press during a game earlier this season. Anselmi leads the Ravens in assists and steals this season.
