St. Joseph serves as endpoint for Smith’s journey Longtime Western coach earned majority of 600 wins building a legacy with Division II Griffons By SAM roBInSon St. Joseph News-Press

nthony Tyler hadn’t set foot on the MWSU Fieldhouse court in nearly 10 years. The Ashland, Va., native only played one season at Missouri Western and didn’t start a game. But he wasn’t going to miss this night — one that meant so much to the man who gave Tyler the opportunity that provided stability to his life and redirected it on a promising path. Tyler joined many others from the past 23 seasons of Griffons basketball at center court following Western’s season-opener November 12 and watched Tom Smith enjoy his moment. The 37th-year coach’s 600th career victory vaulted him into a pantheon he’d long sought to enter, and Tyler remembered why he wanted to be part of the celebration. “The older you get the more you realize that man had your back,” Tyler said. “It was a privilege to be back. It didn’t look like there were that many people there at the start, but at the end of the game, when those 40 players came in, it made me realize the impact coach Smith has had on St. Joseph. “He pushed me to be a better man.” Smith became the 11th coach in Division II history to reach 600 wins and joined a club with just more than 60 all-time members at all collegiate levels. After spending the offseason stuck on 599 wins, nerves became difficult to suppress, and the spotty 69-55 result over Division III Fontbonne hovered nowhere near Smith’s best work. But it allowed Smith to return to work free from the dogged pursuit. “The pressure just seemed to mount to where I probably had everybody all tight by the time we played,” Smith said. “But it’s over and done with, and to be honest, I’m glad it’s over.” ))) The Gary, Ind., native couldn’t picture spending his life any other way. After serving as a student assistant under fellow 600-game-winner Gene Bartow at Valparaiso, Smith became an assistant coach at Drake and Iowa State. Smith then commanded a Central Missouri program and assembled a juggernaut and likely the best team in his four-decade-plus career. The Mules went 26-2 and became the first MIAA team to plateau at No. 1 in the nation. Central spent nine weeks atop the national poll in the 1979-80 season and crammed more than 7,000 fans on two occassions into the Multipurpose Building. The stop in Warrensburg, Mo., proved only the starting point for a long, arduous journey. ))) Smith remembers the moment his career arc changed. At 36, the Valparaiso grad accepted the task of helping his alma mater excel at Division I. The school jumped a level in 1978, two years prior to Smith’s hiring, and he came in an attempt to enhance the profile of his coaching career. In the first month of his debut campaign, he recognized a different D-I and knew he was on the wrong side of it as he stared at coach Digger Phelps’ Notre Dame lineup that included future NBA players Kelly Tripucka and Orlando Woolridge. “As soon as I walked on the floor, I remember saying to myself, ‘I made a mistake,’” Smith said. “I call it egoruptcy. I thought I could go back to Valpo get it done at Division I and be able to move up the ladder again. What happened to me, and I didn’t see it, is the gap between the low D-Is and the major D-Is had widened.” Valparaiso struggled in his eight years, never finishing above sixth in the eight-team Association of Mid-Continent Universities (currently the Summit League) and couldn’t compete financially in the mid-major conference. “At that time, Valpo would vote everything down that cost money,” Smith said. “It’s kind of like Lincoln now in this league.”

The defeats compounded with frustration over the hand he’d been dealt created a conflict, as the joy of his playing days at the school became clouded by disappointment from how the decision to accept the coaching position backfired. “When you win, you feel like a million dollars, (but) every night, losses are hard on you,” he said. “You begin to wonder whether you could get another job.” ))) James Bush didn’t take a recruiting visit but wanted to make sure he wasn’t about to join a sinking ship. The 6-foot-3 junior-college transfer forward saw Western’s recent swoon but also a veteran coach who’d revived his career with players like him. Bush opted to attend Western in 2008, mainly because of Smith’s track record with JUCO players. “I’d heard the men’s basketball team was on a downfall,” Bush said. “When I did the background check, I saw all the wins and what he’d accomplished and knew he had the will to win and wanted to be in the environment to win.” Smith left Valparaiso in 1988 and learned of an MIAA job opportunity while attending the Final Four in Kansas City. He said he had no regrets about dropping a level because Western resided on a more even competitive plane. And he knew what players could propel them quickly. The rules in Division II weren’t as stringent on the academic requirements on junior-college transfers, and the Griffons became one of the first teams to almost exclusively feature imports. Western won the first of five MIAA regular-season titles in the school’s 1990 debut and advanced to nine NCAA Tournaments during its initial 14 years in the conference. “We established a kind of a niche,” longtime assistant coach Mike Nicholson said. “When you played Western, you were gonna be out-toughed. Year in and year out, just feeling like 20 games and the NCAA Tournament was almost a given.” Relying mostly on athletic scorers rather than size,

Western finished no worse than seven games above .500 during the span and owns the MIAA’s third-best winning percentage since Western’s league entrance — behind Washburn and Central. But Division II’s expansion and other conference teams becoming more involved in the JUCO scene made it more difficult for Western to keep reeling in top talent. A sub-.500 season in 2004 gave way to five years of mediocrity. Western hasn’t won 20 games since the run stalled. “There was about 180 D-II schools at that time,” Smith said. “It’s doubled now. It’s harder to (recruit JUCOs) now because there’s just more people after the same players. As soon as we fell off that pedestal, it got harder and harder to get back on it again.” ))) An email on Smith’s office computer reveals remarkable deterioration and part of the reason he relates to many of his players. A screenshot of Gary’s downtown area in 1959 displays a once-vibrant city where Smith grew up. He clicks on an email and sees several photographs of Gary after the steel mills shut down, leading to his hometown’s economy erosion and bleak state. When Smith and his wife, Patsy, rode through Gary this fall on the way home from Valparaiso’s 45th-year reunion, the house he grew up in no longer stood. “I think my growing up there and my friends and things is part of the junior-college recruiting,” Smith said. “A little bit of (my approach) has been, ‘Can I help these kids? “I take offense when people talk about schools that, quote, ‘Do it the right way,’ with high school kids and nice, you know, good kids and everything. I take offense because I don’t think I did it the wrong way.” Western began guaranteeing the JUCO transfers three years on their scholarships to play two seasons should they make sufficient progress. Western men overhaul roster again in wake of topsy-turvy 2010-2011 By Cody Thorn St. Joseph News-Press

For the second straight year, a roster overhaul will turn into pretty good program sales at Missouri Western games. A year after returning only one player, this year’s version of the Griffons boasts only four back from last season. Coach Tom Smith’s extreme makeover to revamp the roster was far different than a winter ago. While there are junior-college transfers again, Smith picked up a few freshmen as well and put a renewed focus on character, not just points per game. “This is a completely different team,” Smith said. “They actually do what I ask them to do. This team has worked hard. We are not as talented as we were last year. On the other hand, we play together better, and we are way better defensively, right now, than we were all of last year.” Last year’s influx of talent led to an up-and-down season, which included multiple suspensions and a 12-16 record. “Basketball got to be not fun last year,” Smith said. “We had selfish guys that would show up one night and not the other. “But two years ago, we made the NCAA Tournament. I think that is kind of forgotten.” The Griffons return three players who saw extensive time last winter in guards T.J. Johnson and Deionta Mitchell and forward Lavonte Douglas, all seniors.

Smith not only had to build a team around those players but had to convince those players to come back for another year. Johnson, the top returning scorer from last year’s holdovers, waited around before making the decision to stay. “I think T.J. was disillusioned and at one point seriously considered leaving,” Smith said. “He was seeing the people we were bringing in and saw their character was decidedly better, so that swayed him to see it through.” Johnson, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard, averaged 12.8 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game last year. Smith credits his leadership in the preseason that set the tone for the rest of the team. “I knew I’d be one of the returning guys, and I knew we needed to have some kind of offense, so I was prepared for any role coach gave me,” Johnson said. Douglas, a 6-6 power forward, and Mitchell, likley the first guard off the bench, combined to score about 17 points per game last year. The other holdover from the 2010-11 team is sophomore guard Jordan Yurth. The trio of Johnson, Mitchell and Douglas will be key pieces on offense this year, but the influx of newcomers will also help boost the scoring. Depth this year shouldn’t be a problem as it was last year for Western when four players left the team throughout the course of the season. In the latter part of the season, the Griffons routinely only used eight players in a game. The newcomers include eight

players, three of which are freshmen. But like in past years, the juniors who are new to the team will have a lot expected of them. Junior-college transfers that could or have already made an impact include point guard James Harris, guard Dylan Frantz, guard Ladarius Frazier, guard/forward Alex Tuluka-Mfumupembe and post players Shawn Tarver and Justin Reid. Harris was slowed in the preseason due to a broken hand but returned to full strength at the start of the season. Frantz, a blue-collar-type player, will be pivotal for what Smith calls his ‘take-charge’ attitude. Perhaps the biggest change for the Griffons will be depth at the forward/center spot — a problem area last year. The newcomers to the post are Tarver (McCook Community College) and Reid (Kankakee CC), both 6-8 forwards. Smith said two of his best offensive rebounders on the team are freshmen Tevin Harris (Chicago) and Freddie Manyawu (Platte County). Fellow freshman Reed Mells (Des Moines) could factor into the guard playing rotation. “Our post players we got are pretty good post players,” Mitchell said. “Tarver can shoot the mid-range and Juice (Reid) is pretty big, and whenever you get him the ball, it is a bucket or a foul. Bell leads Griffons group needing to support Koch Western women looking for answers to help established star By SAM ROBINSON St. Joseph News-Press

The distractions surrounding Alicia Bellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s career are in the past. A 5-foot-7 junior point guard, Bell enters her second healthy season at Missouri Western without the drama that plagued her initial four seasons. The Benton alum no longer has to worry about torn ACLs, a pregnancy or academic-eligibility issues. But that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean a new challenge isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t ahead. Westernâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second and third scoring options â&#x20AC;&#x201D; center Rachel Luteyn and guard Lauren Nolke â&#x20AC;&#x201D; graduated, opening up casting for a new double-figure supporting player to take heat off senior star Jessica Koch. If Bell, who averaged a Griffons-fourthbest 8.9 points per game, had it her way, she would happily set up teammates and continue to constantly crash the boards. She also led the team with 7.1 rebounds per game. Coach Lynn Plett expects the Benton product will have to contribute more points this season and knows it starts with confidence. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not gonna be out there jacking up 3s, but Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be a little more confident when I am open,â&#x20AC;? Bell said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Trying to take some shots takes a lot of the pressure off Jess and them.â&#x20AC;? Bell shot a team-best 49 percent from the field but much of that came from drives and putbacks. This year, the fifthyear junior will have to fire more jumpers without fear, as sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the only non-Koch

Bell said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Now, I have the mindset to catch and shoot. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Scoringâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s never really been one of my priorities. (Plett) probably would like it to be more.â&#x20AC;? Koch, a 5-10 swing player, served as the Griffonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; leading scorer for three straight seasons and remains Westernâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s go-to performer after years of serving as possibly the

conferenceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most indispensable player. But Western (15-14, 11-11 MIAA last season) knows what itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s getting from Koch, whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s averaged 12, 14 and 16 points per game in her three seasons. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inside where the largest unknowncommodities-to-minutes-played ratio exists. Plett called 6-1 center Brittany Griswold the ideal post for his transition-happy system, and the junior transfer from Cloud County Community College (Kan.) appears a sleek floor runner with an outside shot. Although Griswold, who was planning to attend Division I Idaho State but backed out due to the distance from her native Kansas, also might be battling hesitance. At Cloud County, she was a typical back-to-the-basket paint presence. Here, sheâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expected to hit 3s and know all five positions for up-tempo purposes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I went from having to know one position to having to know five,â&#x20AC;? Griswold said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s taken a little time, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not too hard. ... When I was in JUCO, my shot was not outside of the 3-point line. Posts donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t shoot that shot. Although itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one of my favorite shots to shoot, I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t shoot that until now.â&#x20AC;? Until Westernâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s opener, there appeared to be plenty of pressure heaped on Griswold as the only non-freshman post, but Plett may have a quick-developer in freshman Stacey Mgbike and a player whose skills are nothing like Griswoldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. Plett recruited the rangy and physical Mgbike, a atypical Plett-era post, for one reason: rebounding. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A player like Stacey is the kind Brittanyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gonna have a hard time defending: a long post player who takes up a lot of room and seals real well,â&#x20AC;? Plett said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A player like Brittany will be a hard player for Stacey to guard because she doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t use her quickness yet. In a sense, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going to

complement each other and teach each other even though they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know it yet.â&#x20AC;? A potential third impact player looms in senior guard Ashleigh Curry. The 26-year-old senior shooting guard that led the 2006-07 team at nearly 18 points per game and Division II in 3-point percentage should give Western a topflight MIAA guard trio. Koch vacillates between guard and forward. Bell and Koch played summer-league ball with Curry, who returned to the program after a three-year layoff, and Bell insists her shooting/slashing form remains as does the potential for surprising backcourt flash. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I have a tendency to play with her and watch,â&#x20AC;? Bell said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;To actually get to play with her is a whole different level because she automatically makes you better. ... Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pretty much like being a quarterback and those two are my receivers. They just go get it, and I can count on them to be up the court in a flash. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really exciting to know I have both of them out there.â&#x20AC;? Curry is still awaiting an NCAA ruling concerning her eligibility after she played briefly with traveling team Livinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; the Dream during her basketball hiatus. Picked eighth by the conference coaches â&#x20AC;&#x201D; up four spots from last year after two prior last-place finishes â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Western has a chance to mix in with the leagueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best. How long its time near the top lasts is uncertain, however. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I believe weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re better than we were last year,â&#x20AC;? Plett said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t consistent last year. We played some really bad games especially on the road. ... The fact that we split with (Washburn and Emporia State) last year means on any given night, I think we can beat anybody in conference.â&#x20AC;? Bush came from a tough inner city environment in Kansas City, Kan., and believed Smith would provide the means for him to finish his education and not become stuck in the cycle of violence and crime in his hometown. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That shows me it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t all about getting players in there to play basketball,â&#x20AC;? Bush said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They wanted you to graduate and do something further with your life.â&#x20AC;? Tyler, who led the 2001-02 MIAA championship team with 20 blocks off the bench, bounced around through several schools growing up and parlayed his education into a job helping kids through youth social services.

For every success story, however, various players opt not to use the third year or graduate, but Smith said providing the chance was probably instrumental in the Griffonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; sustained success. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not being a martyr here; donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get me wrong,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Some take advantage of it; some donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had kids come back and say, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve changed my life.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; When youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re going through it, you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve changed it because theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not always doing what theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re supposed to do. But thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a pretty nice thing to hear.â&#x20AC;? ))) Both Pittsburg State and Southwest Texas State contacted Smith about coaching jobs in the early 1990s, but he declined and resurrected his career in St. Joseph. The tough-yet-athletically limited 2010 tourney team helped revitalize the MIAAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all-time wins leader.

Despite helming last seasonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s underachieving squad and no other milestones in the immediate future â&#x20AC;&#x201D; 621 wins would move Smith into the top 10 all-time in D-II â&#x20AC;&#x201D; he hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t scheduled a retirement yet. Smithâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s one-time aspirations to thrive at the top level didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t come to fruition, and he remained bitter about the Valparaiso experience until the reunion this season. But from the tough lesson spawned a second chance that allowed him to rise to historical prominence. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nice to have some legacy, and you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have that if you move around all over the place,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted to be here where I was comfortable and successful, and I wanted to be able to leave something. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I will be Missouri Western for at least a while until someone else comes along and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re better.â&#x20AC;?

MARYVILLE, Mo. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; During a preseason scrimmage, Abby Henry sought help from the bleachers. Northwest Missouri Stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s senior point guard spotted Kyla Roehrig, the Bearcatsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; one-year center phenom, observing the workout and called for one more high-low pass, Northwestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s signature play during its final four run. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was yelling at her, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Get on out. I need somebody to lob it to,â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? said Henry, one of two returning starters from Northwestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 29-5 MIAA regular- and postseason championship runs last year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We joke around a little bit and call it the glory days. It gives us something to work hard for and trying to get back there.â&#x20AC;? The burden Henry and the current Bearcats face is trying to follow the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most remarkable act without three of the best players in school history. Henry, a 5-foot-7 thirdyear starter, can still set up program 3-point dynamo Shelly Martin on the wing but can no longer lob passes to Roehrig on the block or feed all-NCAA Tournament forward Gentry Dietz in the post or watch all-American guard Gabby Curtis take over games with her scoring. The Bearcats instead must move on but deal with the expectations created amid a bigger spotlight. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I might be crazy. We might be a .500 team, but I really like this team,â&#x20AC;? Northwest coach Gene Steinmeyer said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This is a likeable team working their tails off trying to live up to what we put on the floor last year. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d just hate it if they have to live up to somebody elseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expectations. If they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t live up (to them), I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want them to feel like failures.â&#x20AC;? The MIAA coaches expect the Bearcats to fall back to earth. They tabbed Northwest fifth in the preseason poll. For the Bearcatsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; anxious fan base, Northwestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s holdovers must also strive to prove they still have a championship pedigree and werenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t one-year wonders with a huge boost from Roehrigâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s extra eligibility. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d be great to show everyone we can still have a great season,â&#x20AC;? junior center Alexis Boeh said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s motivation to prove we still have a chance to be the best in the conference.â&#x20AC;? The path begins with Henry, whose journey hasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t been typical. The Omaha, Neb., native transferred from Creighton after tearing her ACL. Once at Northwest, she morphed into a top conference dribble-penetrator in her 17-plus-point sophomore campaign but

deferred top-scoring duties to the flashy Curtis as a junior. Six-foot-1 twin sisters Alexis and Candace Boeh will see the bulk of the paint minutes, with 6-3 freshman Maggie Marnin still in the developmental stage, although Steinmeyerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been surprised by her quick progression. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s definitely a lot of pressure,â&#x20AC;? Alexis Boeh said of replacing Roehrig and Dietz. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think last year helped prepare me a little better. Obviously, they were the best of the best. I learned to battle inside with them. Working against Kyla, there was always somebody right in your face to block a shot so you kind of had to learn an alternate move.â&#x20AC;? Steinmeyer said Northwest wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t use near as many double-post sets and plans a return to a spread look that will feature a greater emphasis on transition. Northwest will rely on multiple freshmen, and guard Ashleigh Nelson and forward Annie Mathews are the top two in a fiveplayer class in a season that could be predicated on patience. Northwest already endured blowout losses to UMKC and Northeastern State (Okla.) and are set for a conference-opening slate of preseason favorite Washburn and Emporia State. Due to the â&#x20AC;&#x153;monster scheduleâ&#x20AC;? and the youth influx, Steinmeyer said it may take a while for the team to gel despite its preseason national ranking (14). â&#x20AC;&#x153;I just hope people are patient because weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not gonna be good early. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;A lot will depend on, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Can the kids keep their heads up?â&#x20AC;&#x2122;â&#x20AC;? MARYVILLE, Mo. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Northwest Missouri State looks to return to the postseason for the first time since 2008, and that doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean the NCAA Tournament like the Bearcats did three years ago. Coach Ben McCollum has yet to earn a berth in the postseason MIAA Tournament in his first two years. The former Bearcats assistant entered the year with a 22-31 record. He wants his teams to play a simple style and take a step forward in a rebuilding process. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our intensity has been great in practice,â&#x20AC;? McCollum said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I guess weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve kept it more simple than in the past. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve kept it really simple. That seemed to help because guys know what theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing. Whether or not the opponent knows, I guess we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t care, but we need to know what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing first and foremost.â&#x20AC;? Northwest looks a lot different from a year ago with a batch of fresh faces, grouped with a familiar one. McCollum recruited transfers DeAngelo Hailey (Kankakee Community College), Justin Clark (Illinois State) and Alex Sullivan (Lakeland CC) and welcomed back Bryston Williams. The former Lafayette standout left Northwest prior to last season, opting to pursue football aspirations at Peru State (Neb.). Williams since changed his mind and returned to basketball with the Bearcats. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think defensively weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve stayed pretty much exactly the same,â&#x20AC;? McCollum said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We just give a lot of effort, fly around and hopefully get some stops, but now weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got guys that can guard the ball a heck of a lot better than we did in the past which makes a huge difference on defense.â&#x20AC;? Offensively, Northwest seeks to find scoring production after losing All-MIAA performer Elijah Allen to graduation. Allen led the team in rebounding and was the teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s second-leading scorer behind returning guard DeShaun Cooper. In addition, Williams â&#x20AC;&#x201D; a junior in eligibility â&#x20AC;&#x201D; started for the Bearcats at shooting guard during his freshman campaign (2009-2010). â&#x20AC;&#x153;(The transfers) have really

Cooper returns from a secondteam All-MIAA season after pouring in 16.3 points per game in 2010-2011. The junior from St. Louis is the only player returning that started every game, but the team lost only three players from last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s squad â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Allen, Shaneel Narayan and All-MIAA defensive team selection Arunas Simanavicius. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re coaching the newcomers making sure weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all comfortable with the offense, comfortable with the defense,â&#x20AC;? Cooper said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re interacting with each other. It just feels like weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re all together. This year is our first year of really having returners that have been in the system numerous years instead of

having a whole new team we have people that have been here before.â&#x20AC;? Northwest opened its season with an upset of Division I Summit League opponent UMKC 66-62, providing a strong springboard to a potential bounceback season. Senior forward Jake Reinders said the team might have had excuses in the past two years with a first-time head coach in McCollum and a large number of transfers in the program, but the time to perform is now. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Just not making excuses,â&#x20AC;? Reinders said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think the past two years we made excuses â&#x20AC;&#x201D; new players, not enough team chemistry. We just found that scapegoat on what to blame for not getting success. This year, I think we have to take personal responsibility and have no excuses. The Benedictine men welcomed Ryan Moody back to Atchison â&#x20AC;&#x201D; this time as a head coach. Moody played for the Ravens from 1992-96 and will be in charge of a team that returns six seniors from last year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m extremely excited to be in this league, having played in it back in the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;90s,â&#x20AC;? Moody said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m honored to be here. The HAAC is one of the best leagues around.â&#x20AC;? The Ravens finished fourth in the league last season with an 11-9 HAAC record. Two of the top three teams â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Lindenwood and William Jewell â&#x20AC;&#x201D; are no longer in the conference, having transitioned to Division II. Lindenwood will join the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) and William Jewell is now a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). Benedictine earned the No. 3 spot in the HAAC preseason coachesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; poll. MidAmerica Nazarene and Evangel were the top two teams. Although Evangel earned five first-place votes, it finished behind MidAmerica, who grabbed the top spot. Despite the expectations coaches tabbed Benedictine with, Moody knows the task ahead of him as the Ravens third head coach in three years. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have six seniors back, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 17 new guys to us, to our staff, to our systems, to what weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re doing,â&#x20AC;? Moody said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;With those six seniors, that gives us a good rock, a good foundation to start things.â&#x20AC;? Among those returnees are Chris McFaul and Alex Miller,

Moody said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They go extremely hard, and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re happy with where weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re at. We all wish we were a little taller, a little

faster and could shoot a little better. We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to ask them to play hard at all.â&#x20AC;? The Benedictine women want to improve on a fourthplace finish in the HAAC last season. The Ravens were selected to finish third in the conference in the preseason coachesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; poll, so taking a step back is not an option. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m really excited about this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s team,â&#x20AC;? Benedictine coach Chad Folsom said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;So far, theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been picking up things really quickly. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re working extremely hard and bringing a lot of energy and enthusiasm.â&#x20AC;? Benedictine will look to all-HAAC players Kelsey Wolfe and Teresa Zienkewicz to lead the way after losing top scorer Kaela Stratman to graduation. Wolfe, a graduate of DeKalb High School and former NewsPress player of the year, was a third-team selection for AllHAAC honors last season and ranked third for the Ravens in scoring. Zienkewicz â&#x20AC;&#x201D; an honorable-mention honoree â&#x20AC;&#x201D; will control the paint this season. Benedictine will also look to three freshmen this season. Folsom recruited arguably his strongest class, which includes three McDonaldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s All-American nominees â&#x20AC;&#x201D; Jayde Reid, Chayla Rutledge and Jackie Ziesel, a Bishop LeBlond product. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m excited about our freshmen,â&#x20AC;? Folsom said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;One of them is hurt right now, unfortunately. However, I
