Local moms share why they did away with disposable diapers By ERIN WISDOM | ST. JOSEPH NEWS-PRESS They are one of the more unpleasant realities of parenthood and one that, until recent years, was more put up with than pondered. But today, diapers have led to debate: To dispose or not to dispose? Increasingly, moms and dads are foregoing disposable diapers in favor of cloth ones. Among those making the move are three St. Joseph mothers: Elizabeth Andrews, who has five children between 5 months and 10 years old; Hannah Farrell, who has a 4-year-old son and a 5-month-old daughter; and Dana Foster,
who has a 7-month-old daughter and a business, Fluffy Bums and More, selling cloth diapers and related items. Below are some thoughts they shared with the News-Press concerning why they chose cloth.
Why did you decide to use cloth diapers?
Elizabeth: I decided to switch with my third child two and a half years ago, because cloth diapers are more natural, so you don’t have to worry about chemicals like you do with disposable diapers. We come into contact with so many chemicals today and don’t know the long-

term effects, because they haven’t been around that long. Hannah: We came home from the hospital and started using Pampers, and my daughter developed diaper rash. So we switched brands. We kept switching brands and trying creams, but she got worse to the point of bleeding. Finally we tried cloth, and in the first three days we could see a difference (for the better). Dana: This is my first child, and of course every first-time mom wants to do everything perfect. I wanted to go as Please see PAGE 4

Wednesday, September 26, 2012 CONTINUED FROM page 1 to her at the time into delicious meals. It led to quitting her job and starting a full-time ministry called Your Healthy Helper in 2009, along with writing two cookbooks and doing cooking demos on Three Angels Broadcasting Network (3ABN), a 24-hour worldwide Christian television and radio network. “A lot of people think heart disease is genetic, but a lot of times it’s lifestyle,” she says. “Babies don’t start out eating junk food – we give it to them.” For the group at St. Joseph Three Angels Seventh-day Adventist Church, she proved her point that healthy can taste good by making dinner: meatless meatballs with an apricot fruit sauce, a tossed salad served with a mayonnaise-free ranch dressing and corn tortillas topped with cheese-less cheese sauce. “That cheese is fantastic,” says Debbie Wildhagen, one of the guests. “And it’s not cheese. That’s why it is so great.” The cheese sauce is made with raw cashews, pimentos or red peppers, onion powder, cornstarch, lemon juice, salt and water. It gets
its cheesy flavor from nutritional yeast flakes. “It smells like cheese,” Ms. Prettyman says. “I put it on anything savory.” You buy nutritional yeast flakes at a health food store or in the health food department at a grocery store. It’s not the same thing as the active yeast used in making bread. She uses the Red Star brand. “Some have better flavors than others,” says baking expert John Andrew, the former manager of Pioneer Bread Co. “I tell people if they don’t get one they like there is probably one out there they will.” The other secret to making a smooth, creamy sauce is using a food-processor, Ms. Prettyman says. She uses a Vitamix, which she calls the “Cadillac of food processors,” and is able to whip up anything from hot soups to “ice cream” from coconut and bananas. A rice cooker is very helpful, too, when cooking for a vegan diet. “I turn it on and walk away,” Ms. Prettyman says. “It cooks my wholegrain rice in 40 minutes at the most. I cook my rice, steel-cut oats, quinoa — I cook everything in it.” The right equipment turns most of the vegan

recipes into “fast” food, she says. We watched her scoop up hundreds of the meatless meatballs in no time using an ice cream scooper. She had used the Vitamix to grind up steel-cut oats, walnuts and bread. She then added tofu, water and seasonings. “It took me five minutes to put them together,” she says. The meatballs take 25 minutes to bake and can be frozen for even faster future meals. Ms. Prettyman offers many more recipes and her cookbook, “Simply Yummy,” on her website www.melodyprettyman. com. Have you found any benefits beyond the health ones? Dana: It’s definitely beneficial for our budget. Hannah: The economy is hard, and these cloth diapers help. It costs a lot in the beginning, but you save money over time. Elizabeth: It’s better for the environment, too. There are millions of disposable diapers dumped into landfills.
What do you think people often don’t know about cloth diapers?
Hannah: They’re today. They’re not ugly. Dana: Cloth diapers have come a long way since the ones my mom used on me; we’re not talking plastic
pants and safety pins. They’re much easier and neater than in the past. And they’re cute. You’ve got to have cute, especially with a little girl. Elizabeth: It’s just as easy as, if not easier than, putting on a disposable diaper. I’ve had people crowd around me at baby showers and watch me change a diaper, and they see it’s really not that hard.
What advice do you give other parents or parents-tobe who are considering going this route? Elizabeth: I usually talk to them about cost (savings); that’s major for people. Dana: Be committed to trying them. I have a
friend with a disposable diaper stash who was going to switch to cloth eventually, but always had an excuse (not to). Hannah: Just have an open mind. It can’t hurt the baby at all.
Pros and cons of cloth Considering disposing for good of disposable diapers? These facts may help you decide.

Those who value the environment should consider that 18 billion disposable diapers are thrown into landfills every year. Cloth diapers can be reused over and over, so they do not create much waste in landfills. On the downside, washing cloth diapers still requires energy and water. Most parents who use cloth diapers have to run at least one load of laundry every day.
ally trap heat more than cloth diapers, and the amount of heat trapped in disposable diapers may lead to future fertility problems in males. Another study found that the materials in disposable diapers can lead to asthma. Disposable diapers also have been linked to diaper rash and may contain traces of dioxin, an extremely toxic byproduct of the paperbleaching process. It is a carcinogenic chemical, listed by the EPA as the most toxic of all cancerlinked chemicals. It is banned in most countries, but not the U.S.

children do not feel the wetness as easily as they would wearing cloth diapers and, therefore, may not pick up potty training skills as quickly.
Cost
Disposable diapers can cost $1,500 to $2,000 for the entirety of a baby’s time using them. Cloth diapers, although they may cost several hundred dollars up front, are generally cheaper over time, especially if parents wash them at home rather than using a diaper-cleaning service.
