More people are relying on oils as a natural approach to health By ERIN WISDOM

hen Amy Barron has a headache, she doesn’t turn to Tylenol. Rather, the St. Joseph woman uses peppermint. For general aches and pains, she uses frankincense. And while some might attribute these approaches to some kind of radical New Age thinking, essential oils are actually very old remedies that more and more people are turning to. w w w. e a a s t j o e . o r g

Essential oils are concentrated liquids containing aroma compounds drawn from plants. They’re used for a wide variety of health-related purposes and offer the added appeal of safety, even in everyday use. (However,

some suppliers do advise pregnant women and people with certain conditions to consult a doctor before use.) Ms. Barron has been using essential oils for a couple of years and also began selling them a few months

ago through a company called doTERRA. “They’ve made me feel great, she says. “Everyone I’ve had use them loves them. In addition to the uses mentioned above, Ms. Barron uses essential oils to help with sleep, digestive issues such as nausea and vomiting, energy, mood balance, cleansing, stress relief and boosting the immune system. For some of these, she uses blends created by her supplier that combine several essential oils. As for how to go about using the oils: They can be taken in capsule form if they meet certain purity standards or can be breathed in or used topically. Numerous guides are available that instruct not only on what oils to use for various purposes but also on how to administer them. Even some mainstream media have gotten in on the action; Real Simple magazine, for one, has published a guide explaining not only how to use certain oils but also why they work. Eucalyptus oil, for example, is good to use as a decongestant because it works as an expectorant, helping to clear mucus from the respiratory passages. Peppermint can ease a tension headache because it contains menthol, a natural anesthetic that dulls pain receptors. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, sometimes the things that are the hardest to come by are the ones that are most worth the effort. Think about this as you face obstacles. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, contrary to what you believe, things at work will go on even if you take a few days off for a vacation. There may be some catching up afterward, but you can handle it. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, your mind may be churning, but worrying excessively over something will not help the situation. Therefore, focus on something else for a while.

Robert Cooperider didn’t simply open a store last Friday. He gave role-players, card collectors and board-gamers in Northwest Missouri a sweet new hangout. Mr. Cooperider, the mind behind former collectible shops like Star Trader (in the 1990s), The Black Dragon (in the early 2000s) and The Black Dragon Inn (in the mid2000s), is now the proud owner of Galaxy Games at 3618 Charles St. The store specializes in selling role-playing games, card games, table top games and board games, but with a large gaming room and two private gaming rooms on the building’s west side, the store also serves as a battleground for those seeking a rousing tourney of “Magic: The Gathering,” “Yu-Gi-Oh,” “Pokémon,” “Dungeons & Dragons,” “Warhammer,” “7th Sea,” “Wing Commander” or many others. “We’re just here to have fun,” he says. Among the main gaming room are several long tables, as well as a couple of tables specially designed for “Warhammer,” a game that implements regiments of fantasy miniatures (a third “Warhammer” table is being designed). Gaming tournaments will be held on both a weekly and nightly basis, and although Galaxy Games only has “Magic” and a handful of other competitions written on the schedule for now, Mr. Cooperider plans to add a lot more in the near future. “There are thousands of card games and thousands of board games. Periodically, I want to run Monopoly tournaments, chess, checkers, maybe even spades, Pinochle and hearts,” he says. “There’s a huge variety we want to host.” “You can play anything and everything,” Robert’s son and Galaxy Games employee, Harrison Cooperider, enthusiastically adds. “We’re all about new games.”

ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, there are a few things you need to work out this week, but then you will be set for quite a while. Take the opportunity to recharge your batteries.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, just when you think the week will go on without any excitement, something pops up and it’s just what you need to beat the doldrums. Expect time with friends. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, sometimes you need to be tough on yourself to get things done, but you will be satisfied with the results when you push yourself. Focus on goals this week. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, a risk you take this week will pay off in a big way. You might be anxious to take a significant risk, but the eventual reward will be well worth it. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, it may be challenging to find some initial support for a new idea because you are essentially charting new territory. Just give it time and people will come around.

Essential oils gaining popularity CONTINUED FROM Page A1 contains a chemical called eugenol that is analgesic and an antibacterial. Jasmine oil works as a natural anti-depressant. Tea tree oil is good for battling breakouts, because it has antimicrobial properties and works to help minimize the bacteria responsible for pimples. And lavender oil helps relieve stress due to properties that calm the nervous system. Amber Flinders can speak to the last in this list. The St. Joseph woman became interested in

A piece of Atoms for Peace Any band that combines Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and bassist Flea of The Red Hot Chili Peppers will immediately get my attention. When you throw in REM percussionist Mauro Refosco, Beck drummer Joey Waronker and longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, I consider any album that band makes a must-listen. This new supergroup, called Atoms for Peace, will release its first album “Amok” on Feb. 26. But you can find a little taste of what’s to come on Youtube, where a video for the clickety-clackety groove “Judge, Jury and Executioner” has already been released. — Shea Conner, St. Joseph News-Press

Galaxy Games offers merchandise, more exlusive gaming venue CONTINUED FROM page A2 Galaxy Games even will offer a venue for those wanting to play “Highlander: The Card Game,” a collectible card game that has been out of print for several years now. “Highlander” was published by Thunder Castle Games of Kansas City, so there are still a lot of local players, Mr. Cooperider explains. But because most stores can’t capitalize off of new “Highlander” merchandise, many of the tournaments in the state have dried up. “A lot of shops in Kansas City don’t want to deal with it because they make no money off of it. I buy the stuff second-hand. I don’t make much of a profit on it, and that’s OK,” Mr. Cooperider says. “If it brings people in to buy one game, maybe they’ll play another game.” The store obviously will bring in lots of gaming fans from St. Joseph, but Mr. Cooperider fully expects visitors from Kan-

sas City and more than a few from Maryville, Mo. He says most of the gamers who attend Northwest Missouri State University often make the two-hour drive to Kansas City for tournaments, but his shop essentially will provide a “halfway point” that would be very convenient for them. Mr. Cooperider wants every gamer who walks into the shop to have a good experience. That’s why he provides a snack bar with soda, energy drinks, chips and candy bars. That’s also why he lets customers give a handful of games a test run in the store — with a used copy — before they buy it. “I enjoy playing these games and most of these are my personal copies,” he says. “As long they take care of them, I don’t mind loaning them out.” He must be doing something right. In the six days since Galaxy Games has opened, Mr. Cooperider has already seen a lot

of traffic. “Friday night, when I closed at 3 a.m., I kicked out over a dozen people,” he laughs. “... It’s going to be like that every night.” Mr. Cooperider says the shop’s bread and butter will be “Magic: The Gathering” merchandise because that collectible card game boasts the largest audience. He’s working with distributors that will allow him to carry special “Magic” merchandise that can’t be found at any major retailer. Mr. Cooperider also says that Galaxy Games will specialize in deck-building games like

“Dominion” and “Thunderstone,” which are popular right now. While the fantasy game crowd certainly will drive his business, Mr. Cooperider’s shop has plenty of other merchandise to offer. At Galaxy Games, visitors will find party games like “Apples to Apples: Disney Edition,” “Mad Gab” and “Loaded Questions,” a variety of themed “Monopoly” boards (including “The Godfather,” “Street Fighter,” “Star Wars” and “Spider-Man”), Lego games, trivia games and even simple card games

like Euchre, Canasta, Pinochle and Rummy. Galaxy Games extends into the world of collectibles as well. The shop carries several books (including “Star Wars,” “Dragon Lance,” “Goosebumps” and “Berenstain Bears”), “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” commemorative plates, various posters, anime comics, rare video game guides, CDs, DVDs and video games
