Summer reading programs keep kids busy library are so important. If we can get them in the door, we can get a book in their hand. A book they can read for fun, not one assigned by a teacher. We try to offer books that will show them the joy of reading and make them life-
long readers and library users. Q. What summer reading programs does the St. Joseph Public Library offer for teenagers and young adults?

By this point in the summer, parents everywhere have likely grown weary of the choruses of ‘We’re bored!’ coming from their kids. Either that, or they’re ready to rip the TV off the wall and throw out the electronic devices their children seemingly never turn off. In that boat? Spark your child’s imagination by encouraging him or her to head to one of the branches of the St. Joseph Public Library, where summer reading programs for beginning readers to young adults take the focus this time of year. In this Q&A, Dee Zvolanek, assistant manager for children’s service at the Downtown branch, answers our questions about the summer reading program — and she even reveals what new book series might be the next “Harry Potter. Q. How difficult is it to keep children and teens interested in reading? A. For kids, it’s not difficult if they are already interested; it’s just a matter of continuing to supply them with books they are interested in. We like to start kids on a series, and then we’re on autopilot as far as recommendations. When the series is finished, we have lists of other series that we can offer. For kids who don’t particularly like to read, unless it’s a child with developmental disabilities, it’s because they have not found the right book to engage them. That is our most important job as children’s librarians — find that book that the kid will enjoy. I tend to suggest the goofy stuff such as “Captain Underpants because it is in quasi-comic form, not overwhelming in terms of amount of pages, funny, and, of course, a kid instantly covets a book that has “underpants in the title. “Captain Underpants is a series, so we’re off.
Somewhere along the line, if we do our job right, the kids begin to trust us to recommend other stuff they will like. We always tell them to read the synopsis on the book, and if it does not sound really interesting, don’t take the book. For teens, wow, it’s very difficult. Think of all we have to compete with: school, sports, extracurricular activities, jobs, social lives, gaming, iPhones and texting! That is why programs designed to draw teens to the

Summer reading programs keep kids busy CONTINUED FROM Page 1 A. Every summer the St. Joseph Public Library joins with other libraries around the country in offering summer reading programs to children and young adults. Each year the theme is different, but the goal is the same: entice those young adult readers to spend at least a portion of their summer reading. One book a week is all we ask of young adults, ages 12 through grade 12. We reward them for coming to the library
with a weekly drawing for food coupons, bowling passes and movie passes. Young adults who participate in the program by reading the nine books have a chance at winning prizes like cash and gift cards. We also offer programs to educate and entertain, such as scavenger hunts, tours of Mt. Mora Cemetery, lock-ins, cooking classes, and the list goes on and on. At our Downtown Library we have these remaining Summer Reading
programs. No registration is necessary.

Entertainment offered by summer reading programs CONTINUED FROM Page 2
O July 24 and 25 — Woody’s Menagerie, animals Washington Park Library offers Tricky Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. July 10 (crafts) and 3:30 p.m. July 17 (bingo) for kids. Q. What programs are there for toddlers and kids who might be just learning to read? A. Will Stuck at East Hills Library has a storytime on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Q. Where do you go or who do you contact to register for any of these programs? A. There is no registration for programs unless specifically indicated. If a program requires sign-up, call or drop by the library offering the program. Q. What are some of the most popular new books in each age range? Is there anything that you think might be the next “Harry Potter” or “Hunger Games” series? A. Beginning reader books now have Star Wars- and Lego-themed books that are very popular. The classic duo Frog and Toad are always popular, and the Jim Henson Company is currently working on a movie about them. The “Pinkalicious”
books by Victoria Kann have been another hit. For grades 2 though 6, the diary books have taken off, such as “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” by Jeff Kinney, “Dear Dumb Diary” by Jim Benton and “Dork Diaries” by Rachael Russell. As for the next Harry Potter, it may be the dystopian series “Divergent” by Veronica Roth. Also, the “Ranger’s Apprentice” by John Flanagan has enjoyed a lot of popularity, and it too will be a movie in 2013.
Q. What is the benefit or value that children and teens get from taking part in the summer reading programs? A. Kids keep up the habit of reading, hone their skills for grammar and vocabulary, get ready for the next grade, practice concentration on one thing, keep off the streets and the TV, and depending on what is read, are offered role models, new knowledge about the world, exercises in problem solving and, hopefully, a good laugh
now and again. Q. What incentives are offered for them to participate? A. The incentives are many, such as coupons for ice cream, kids’ meals at popular restaurants, milk shakes, toys, notebooks and a free book. For young adults we have golf, movie and bowling passes, food coupons, T-shirts and gift cards.
