Sleep, comrades, sleep and rest On this Field of the Grounded Arms, Where foes no more molest, Nor sentry’s shot alarms! Ye have slept on the ground before, And started to your feet At the cannon’s sudden roar, Or the drum’s redoubling beat. But in this camp of Death No sound your slumber breaks; Here is no fevered breath, No wound that bleeds and aches.

All is repose and peace, Untrampled lies the sod; The shouts of battle cease, It is the Truce of God! Rest, comrades, rest and sleep! Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy. ~Author Unknown

Tears In Heaven Would you hold my hand, if I saw you in heaven? Would you help me stand, if I saw you in heaven? I’ll find my way through night and day ‘Cause I know I just can’t stay here in heaven Beyond the door, there’s peace I’m sure And I know there’ll be no more tears in heaven
Would you know my name, if I saw you in heaven? Would you be the same, if I saw you in heaven? I must be strong and carry on ‘Cause I know I don’t belong here in heaven ~Eric Clapton, Will Jennings

These fallen heroes represent the character of a nation who has a long history of patriotism and honor - and a nation who has fought many battles to keep our country free from threats of terror. ~Michael N. Castle
Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am in a thousand winds that blow; I am the softly falling snow. I am the gentle showers of rain; I am the fifields elds of ripening grain. I am in the morning hush; I am in the graceful rush. Of beautiful birds in circling flflight, ight, I am the starshine of the night. I am in the flflowers owers that bloom, I am in a quiet room.

I am the birds that sing, I am in each lovely thing. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there. I do not die.
Life After Loss Death can be a haunting topic for some, filled with hundreds of unanswered questions, lack of understanding and emotions. At the time of a loved one’s death, the family is not only faced with many questions and decisions, but their own emotions, some of which they may have never dealt with before. “At the time of a person’s death, there are over 128 decisions to make,” says JL Robertson, manager and vice president of Rupp Funeral Home in St. Joseph. “That is why making a prearranged funeral or cremation plan is very important.” Robertson says the primary reason for prearranging your services is to relieve your family of unnecessary concerns, such as your service preference, and the peace of mind of not having the financial burden that can come along with final arrangements. “I have made thousands of funeral arrangements and the families that have prearranged their funeral or cremation services seem to have the least amount of stress at the time of
need, because many of the decisions have already been made,” Roberston adds. Eric Montegna, funeral director and vice president of Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory, agrees that prearrangements are an excellent idea to help your loved ones after you are gone. He says that taking into consideration how your choices and instructions will help your family begin the healing process after your passing is of the utmost importance. “At Meierhoffer, this question is preeminent to the disposition of the body, because we know that any money someone spends that doesn’t help those who survive the loss, is essentially money wasted,” Montegna says. The death of a loved one is a traumatic and life-altering event, and Montegna and his staff at Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory have pinpointed a plan to help assist families begin their healing process almost immediately following a death. This time is called the Acute Loss Period,
and the staff has worked diligently to learn how to help the families they service begin the long road to healing. “We start by getting to know the family, introduce ourselves, and let them know what we are all about,” he states. “Then we begin to compile their history and put their story together. That helps us learn not only about the deceased, but also the family. We can learn a lot of family dynamics in that part, and find out who the ‘doers’ and ‘feelers’ of the family are.” After getting to know the family, Montegna says they then begin to walk the family through the entire process – from discussing when they first heard the news of the death, all the way to deciding on how to handle gatherings, whether formal or informal. He says that the gathering phase leads to the connecting phase, where the family of the deceased begins to connect or reconnect with people they may not have seen for a long time, which often becomes their emotional safety net for the coming months and years. “You begin to realize how many people
are out there who really care about you, and that’s something a lot of people discount in the beginning,” he says. “People often think, ‘This is a very private thing that has happened to me, and I need to shield people from it,’ which isn’t the case.” Scott Meierhoffer, CEO of Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory, agrees that allowing others into what seems like a very private matter, is for the best. “One of the most prolific statements we hear, is ‘Mom outlived all of her friends,’ but the funeral is for the living, as much or more so, than the deceased,” he says. Montegna also adds that 70 percent of attendees of a funeral did not even know the deceased, but are there for emotional support of someone in the family. After the gathering phase has passed, the next step is reflection. During this stage, Montegna explains this is when the real “soulsearching” questions happen. “We begin to think ‘What will happen when I die or when someone close to me dies?’ and
these are real soul-searching moments,” he says. “They might happen at the funeral home, on the drive home or at two in the morning.” In the end, the steps of the Acute Loss Period lead to celebrating your loved one’s life. “Celebrating doesn’t necessarily mean having a party, it means making room for joy and understanding that everything that made that person special to you, every connection, every memory, isn’t gone,” Montegna says. “You have lost the physical connection and touch with that person, but it’s the legacy that people remember.” The staff at Meierhoffer hopes that the discussion they have with each family opens doors to dialog among themselves, and help one another begin the healing process. “Every family has a different path, and it’s our job to surface their needs, sort out the path and get the family walking down it,” Montegna adds. — Sydney Moore St. Joseph News-Press
