Two pet groups of St. Joseph which are making a difference Man’s best friend, be it a dog or cat, or other animal, can always count on a helping hand from two St. Joseph groups. Friends of the Animal Shelter was founded in 2000 by Cathy Madsen. The group works hand in hand with Rick Smith, manager of the St. Joseph Animal Control & Rescue Shelter, 701 Lower Lake Road. Composed of 40 volunteers from all walks of life, with Lucinda Kerns as president, their common bond is having a genuine concern for animal welfare. The volunteer group is funded solely through private donations and fundraising events. Friends of the Shelter has many volunteer opportunities to work one-on-one with the animals at the St. Joseph Animal Shelter, such as walking, grooming, bathing and socializing with them. They also take animals to schools and nursing homes, have monthly sponsored Adoption Days and offer Pet Previews at public locations. Another watchdog group which is interested in the welfare of all animals is the Humane Society of St. Joseph and Buchanan County. This non-profit organization is dedicated to assisting the community in providing a better quality of life for animals through financial aid, education and advocacy. An event aimed at showcasing pets and their owners is the Canine Costume Contest held the first Saturday in October. They also are dedicated to the humane treatment of animals. The Humane Society of the United States estimates that between three and four million cats and dogs are euthanized each year. That’s why the group promotes the Spay-Neuter Innocent Pets Partnership Program. According to the Friends of the Shelter, “Our mission is quite a mountain to climb in the goals we’ve set for our group – to have a 100 percent adoption rate and zero percent euthanasia rate of all animals that come through the Animal Shelter. As volunteers, we share many wonderful moments with the animals and their adoptive families. This keeps us focused and on task toward meeting our goals.”

harnesses (there are three sizes and these can be used for puppies too); inexpensive cat litter (non-clumping); leashes; toys; kennels for transporting pets; paper towels; liquid hand soap; fabric softener sheets; laundry detergent; air freshners and old bath towels. Adoption Tips: Animals can not go directly home when adopted. All animals must go to a local veterinarian for spay or neuter, and//or to get vaccinations following an adoption. Reservations are made at adoption time and you will be told when your pet can be picked up directly at the veterinarian’s office. If you are coming from out-of-town plan ahead for two trips. One exception is at the Friends of the Animal Shelter Saturday adoptions when appointments can’t be made until Monday morning. Adoptees are called Monday with dates to pick up pets at the vets. If you see an animal you are interested in on www.petforu.com web pages, please go to the Shelter as quickly as possible. Space is limited and animals have a very small window of time to be adopted. The day available for adoption is in some cases the animal’s last day, so if you would like to adopt, you should try to be at the Shelter at 1 p.m. on the date available for adoption. Once you arrive at the Shelter, it’s easy: 1. Let the Shelter attendant know which pet you want. 2. Fill out a little paper work and pay your fees. 3. Your new pet will go to the vet to be neutered and have its shots. 4. You’ll pick up the pet at the vet and then take it home to live happily ever after. Shelter Costs: The fees for a cat average around $65 and fees for a dog start around $80. This will include an adoption fee of $10, medical exam, surgery fee, vaccinations and city registration. A microchip is included with all adoptions.

Many animal lovers are unable to volunteer, but donations are always welcome for the shelter.

There are extra tests and services that are offered at the time of adoption, such as heartworm test and declawing, and these are discounted to the shelter animals by local veterinarians.

Among the most-needed items are puppy and kitten food, both canned and dry (no Ol’ Roy food); dog harnesses (especially small and medium); cat

When adopting a pet, Lucinda Kerns, says it’s important to remember to “get a pet that suits your personality. People also forget that a pet takes some care, and it’s an investment of time and money.”

HOW OLD IS YOUR DOG IN HUMAN YEARS? Generally, big dogs age faster than small ones. Use this chart to determine if your dog is in his/her adult prime ir geriatric. For example, a 6-year-old dog weighing less than 20 pounds is the equivalent of a 40-year-old person, but a 6-year old dog weighing more than 120 pounds is the equivalent of a 69-year old. William Fortney, DVM, a veterinarian specializing in geriatric medicine and director of community care at Kansas State University School of Veterinary Medicine devised this chart.
