5 AFFORDABLE WAYS TO SPOIL KITTY: Sing your cat a song. Cats recognize their names better in a song form than spoken. While cats understand commands, it often takes a minute before they quite see what you want. A little song makes it easier to get it quickly. Dampen and squeeze out a washcloth and use it to wipe their head and ears just like a mom kitty with her kittens. Doing this takes them back to that time and they really do appreciate it and settle down. Make a homemade kitty jungle gym. Use boxes, scrap wood, scrap bits of carpet, etc. It won’t hurt your pocket book, and kitty will LOVE it! Make sure to include lots of exploratory holes, lots of ledges up high for them to sleep on, etc. Those same storage tubs around the house, covered with washable rugs and small quilts, make excellent beds or sprawling places, or staircases for older kitties. Grass is good for kitty’s digestion and helps him throw up hair balls, which could be dangerous if he has to pass them through his intestines. While it’s more difficult to maintain grass in a tub, it’s worth it. Rye grass grows quickly and is apparently tasty. Otherwise, bring in grass stems from the outdoors. When you have to leave the cats alone for a substantial amount of time, hide their favorite treats around the house (under chairs, on ledges, etc.) This way they will keep finding surprises while you’re gone, keeping them happy and preventing boredom. 6 Pet Paparazzi September 27, 2009

Tarantulas:

Piranhas: live up to their Hollywood reputation as vicious fish that will not hesitate to chew off the hand that feeds it. This isn’t a pet for the faint of heart - only experienced aquarists should take on the piranha.

Madagascar Hissing Cockroach: no ordinary roach. For one thing, it can grow to up to 3 inches long and over an inch wide - not something you would swat with a rolled-up magazine! They are hardy creatures that do not bite, and in fact make great exotic pets for children.

“Pac Man” Frog: an apt nickname for the ornery ornate horned frog. Legend says that once it bites, it won’t let go until sundown. Just like the computer icon, this frog is ready to gobble everything in its path, and will bite cage mates, siblings, even its human handler.

contrary to popular belief, are not usually dangerous or even aggressive. These large, hairy, and frequently beautiful animals are gaining popularity as interesting, low-maintenance pets.

Skunk: once the Rodney Dangerfield of the animal world. But the perception of the skunk is improving as more people adopt these native-born animals as pets.

Hermit Crab: curiously, neither a hermit nor a crab. As a pet, he’s quite sociable and does well in groups of his own species. There are about 800 species of hermit crabs and can be found all over the world. However, here are only two species usually found in the pet trade: the purple claw crab and the Ecuadorian crab.

Stick Insects: one of the most popular insect to keep as pets. They can hide in plain sight with camouflage that is so perfect they are nearly indistinguishable from the branches of the plants on which they feed.

Wallaby: a miniature version of the kangaroo. The Latin name for the wallaby is macropod, which means “Big Foot.” They are affectionate, playful and mischievous pets.

Sugar Gliders: marsupials native to Australia, New Guinea and Indonesia that have been blessed with the ability to glide through the trees in their natural habitats. From a good height, they can take “flights” of more than 150 feet.

Potbellied Pigs: first introduced to the United States from Asia 15 years ago. They are easily trained and have an alert curiosity and affectionate nature. They’re smarter than the smartest dogs, and just as appreciative of a good bellyscratch. But prospective owners should be aware that cute piglets can grow to be quite large pigs.

"Dogs need to sniff the ground; it's how they keep abreast of current events. The ground is a giant dog newspaper, containing all kinds of late-breaking dog news items, which, if they are especially urgent, are often continued in the next yard." ~Dave Barry

Minty Dog Bones

Ingredients: 1 Tbl. Veg. Oil 1 C. Water 2 ½ C. Whole Wheat Flour ½ C. Oatmeal 2 Tbl. Fresh Mint 1/3 C. Chopped Parsley 1/4 Tsp. Minced Garlic (flea prevention) Directions: Mix Oil and Water, slowly add flour and other ingredients, roll dough out on a flat surface. Cut with bone-shaped cookie cutters. Bake 35 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Makes about 2 dozen cookies (depending on the size of your cutter).

Benefits of Mint and Parsley and Garlic in Dog Treats The fresh flavor of parsley and mint helps to freshen your pet’s breath. What else does mint do? Mint can also be soothing to the stomach and nervous system and help alleviate nausea. Parsley is also soothing and can help relieve arthritic pain. Garlic supports the immune system and prevents fleas. St. Joseph News-Press September 27, 2009 13

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.... St. Joseph News-Press September 27, 2009 15
