Dog Treats - Carob Version (from Squidoo.com) Ingredients: 1 cup carob chips 2 cups flour 1 cup powdered milk 1 egg 1 tbsp vegetable oil a little water Preheat oven to 315°. Spray 2 large cookie sheets with vegetable oil spray. In a Food Processor, grind the carob chips to a fairly fine consistency. Add flour and powdered milk, process just to mix. Add egg, oil and a little water. Process to a pizza dough-like ball (holds together but is not too sticky) by adding water a little at a time. Don’t let the mixture get too wet or the treats will puff up. Gather the dough into a ball and place on a cookie sheet. Split into 2, and reserve one ball. Press into a disk. Sprinkle with flour to prevent sticking. Roll dough until it’s about 1/8 inch thick. Using a pizza cutter, cut into 1/4 to 1/2 inch squares. Repeat with other dough ball. Bake for 30 - 40 minutes, rotating cookie sheets and switching positions halfway through. When finished baking, the edge treats will begin to separate - they may not be totally hard. Remove from oven. Cool for about 10 minutes. Crack into individual treats. If necessary, put sheets back in oven (you may want to consolidate onto one pan) with oven turned off. Let the treats crisp overnight.

Area couple finds that retired greyhounds make great pets

We’ve always been told that home is where the heart is. It’s where we go for nourishment, love and affection and a familiar face when we need it the most. But what if you didn’t have a home to call your own? Or a group of people who loved you unconditionally and took care of you? These are things that the MoKan Greyhound Adoption group never wants their dogs to feel again, and thanks to the adoption process they have created, most of them won’t. Although a lengthy process, the retired racing greyhounds that the group handles are placed in the most fitting homes they can find. One of the ways the group finds the perfect home for each dog is by placing each one in a foster home until they are adopted. The foster homes are designed to help the dogs adjust to life off the race track, and become accustomed to staying in one place. While in the foster home, each dog’s temperament is studied to help make sure they are placed in a suitable home. Rich and Teresa Sloan, of St. Joseph, happened to fill the requirements needed to adopt from the group. After the lengthy paperwork was filled out and the home visits completed, the Sloan’s were chosen as a perfect fit for a then 2-year-old greyhound, Sam. “Sam, when we first got him, had only raced a few times and never finished a race,” Teresa says. “Sam started three races and never finished; they retired him real quick,” Rich adds. Although Sam wasn’t up to par as a racing dog, the Sloan’s feel he is perfect as a pet. In fact, after adopting Sam, the Sloan’s didn’t think they would adopt another dog - but their feelings quickly changed. Shiloh, who was only 3 years old at the time, came from a racetrack that was closing down. Although a torn muscle in her shoulder stopped her from being a good racing dog, the group knew she could still be considered a good pet. The only problem was, because the group was unaware Shiloh was there, they did not have the funds or foster families to take care of them, causing them to have to act fast to find a home for these two special dogs. “They called us and said, ‘you only have one, wouldn’t you like another?’,” Teresa laughs. “We were hesitant at first, but said we would take her for the weekend to try her out, and she never left. We weren’t going to take another dog, we swore we weren’t, but we ended up taking her anyway.” Of course, seven years later, the Sloan’s are more than happy to have both Sam and Shiloh as part of their family. Unlike adoption from a local shelter, adopting Sam and Shiloh has presented some very different training

By SYDNEY MOORE St. Joseph News-Press obstacles for the Sloan’s. Because they have mainly lived in crates, going from racetrack to racetrack, living in a home took some major adjusting for Sam and Shiloh. One of the major differences, the Sloan’s say, was training the dogs to let them know when they needed to go outside, because on the track, rather than letting you know when they need to go to the bathroom, the greyhounds are let out at the same times each day. “They are very smart dogs, it took them a couple of days and they knew the difference,” Teresa says. “They realize that that’s outside and they need to let you know when they need to go out there.” Another task greyhounds aren’t used to is using stairs. There aren’t many steps on the tracks, so the dogs have never been faced with them. “Sam is still hesitant,” Rich says. “He doesn’t love it, but he will do it. Shiloh does OK with it, though.” Although these tasks are things other dogs may already know, there are things that the greyhounds know when they go to live with a family. “They are just wonderful, they are very ready-made dogs,” Teresa says. “They are already leash trained, pretty much house trained. They are very good for people who don’t want to deal with all of that or don’t have the time.” Another thing, which the Sloan’s say is sometimes a misconception about greyhounds, is that they need an abundance of exercise. Although they are retired racers, the dogs don’t need an excessive amount of exercise or a large yard in order to stay healthy and happy, but just enough space to sprint around in a circles a couple of times. “We do walk our dogs quite a bit, but not everyone does,” Teresa says. “It takes the dogs a while to get used to longer distances; they’re more sprint type runners.” Although the dogs don’t need a lot of exercise, they are more than capable of reaching a high speed if they get loose. Teresa says that the dogs can make 40 mph in just three strides if they were to get loose. “Sam, in a short time, could make 35 mph,” Rich says. “And to think, he was considered not a great racer.” Adopting a retired greyhound may sound like a lot of work, but the Sloan’s feel the adoption is the best way they could have gone when choosing their pets. “I think people are daunted by the adoption papers you have to fill out, but really, they (MoKan Greyhound Adoption group) are such nice people, who just want to do the right thing for these dogs,” Teresa says. “They don’t want them flipped from household to household; they are looking for their forever homes, and they want their forever homes to be the first one they pick.” If you would like more information about the MoKan Adoption group and how to get involved, visit their Web site at www.mokangreyhounds.org.

Tribute to a Best Friend Sunlight streams through window pane onto a spot on the floor... then I remember, it’s where you used to lie, but now you are no more. Our feet walk down a hall of carpet, and muted echoes sound... then I remember, it’s where your paws would joyously abound. A voice is heard along the road, and up beyond the hill, then I remember, it can’t be yours..... your golden voice is still. But I’ll take that vacant spot of floor and empty muted hall, and lay them with the absent voice and unused dish along the wall. I’ll wrap these treasured memories in a blanket of my love, and keep them for my best friend until we meet above.
