A SALUTE TO

& ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY

An advertising publication of the St. Joseph News-Press • November 11, 2012

In memory of the men and women who have died in the war on terror

Warriors of the 21st Century are professionals who volunteered to join the United States Armed Forces. They grew up in the shadow of September 11, 2001, a defining moment for most of them. Many have endured multiple deployments and most return home. Some do not. “Remembering Our Fallen” was created to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Its legacy will be that these men and women will never be forgotten and that their names will be remembered and spoken. If you have questions about the project, the tour, or are the family member of a Fallen Hero and would like information on when a tour will be coming to your state, please contact: Bill Williams at 402-612-0210 or info@rememberingourfallen.org www.rememberingourfallen.org

by Amanda Whitney The bravest man I know. Is a man I’ve never met. He’s a man who risks his life To save a friend, Not only to save a friend, But to save a nation. Risking his life For those he does not know. Stepping up Leaving loved ones behind, So that somewhere, Someone else won’t have to. He is a man who follows orders Even though he knows he might die. The bravest man I know. Is the man who would rather die, So one more person could go home To see his family again. The man who stares death in the face, But never blinks. The bravest man I know. Is the man who risks his life So one day the world may be a better place for his children. Or any man who goes against his biggest fear. DEATH Just to save someone he loves. The bravest man I know. Is the man who fights So another man can have the taste of sweet freedom. Not fighting only for his own benefit, But for many others all over the world, Fighting to make this world a better place. That’s the bravest man I know.

America – the land of the free and home of the brave. But what does that really mean? Nothing is free in this world, and sure, tackling a fear can make you feel brave, but is that really what it’s about? Alexis Simmerman, a sixth grader at Stanberry R-II School, seems to know what the statement really means. Freedom isn’t required; it’s something we are fortunate enough to have. And Alexis, even at the tender age of 11, knows who is responsible for our freedom. The U.S. Military. The men and women who have fought – and continue to fight – for the freedom we each enjoy every day. The people like her father, Kermit Simmerman, who is a staff sergeant in the Active Guard Reserves. Each year, the Stanberry Elementary Student Council plans and presents a Pre-K through 12 program for the community to honor the veterans. Last year, the event sponsored an essay contest, with the winners being given the opportunity to read their winning essay at the program. Alexis, who hopes to author books in the future, was chosen as one of the winners of the contest. Because she has cerebral palsy, which is a disorder of movement, muscle tone or posture, Alexis stood with her father, Kermit, as he read the essay for her at the program. This year, Alexis was specifically asked, based on her talent, to write a special tribute to the veterans, which she excitedly accepted. Her poem, which is simply titled “Veterans,” appears short, sweet and to the point of the holiday we observe in

remembrance of those who have fought for us. But in a brief about her work, Alexis asks her readers to dig a little deeper to find the meaning of her piece. “Now, think about this poem and its meaning. Don’t use your brain - try to think with your heart,” she writes. “There are millions and billions of veterans that fought for the U.S. All of them had to say goodbye to their families at some point. Many would agree that one day’s remembrance isn’t at all close to how long it should be.” Alexis, along with her younger brother, Lucian, and their mother, Heather, have had to say goodbye to their hero, Kermit, on more than one occasion. He joined the National Guard in 1996, after graduation from Stanberry High School, and has served full-time since 2001 with HQ, 1/129th FA. Kermit was deployed to Kosovo, and state-side for Operation Noble Eagle, served on the Hurricane Katrina Disaster Relief Team and trained with NATO in Germany during June of this year. While Kermit was defending our country, Heather was here at home, holding things together and raising their children. For her hard work and dedication, Heather was awarded the prestigious Molly Pitcher Award, which is given to military wives who go above and beyond, not only for their spouse, but for the unit, as well. The military has always been a part of the Simmerman’s lives, which Alexis showcases in her writing and the heartfelt gratitude she feels toward the men and women who have served – past and present – to protect the lives we are able to lead. Even as a young girl, she knows that gratitude should be shown, “whenever you pass by a veteran, even if it is brief, remember to say ‘Thank you.’”

Veterans by Alexis Simmerman

Here, as a country, united we stand, All because of veterans across the land! They’ve earned our rights to be equal, They have kept peace among people, They’ve stood for justice and liberty, While we are all now safe and free, Veterans, we know how much the colors mean to youThose bold stars and stripes that are red, white and blue! Every time you fight, it’s for a good cause, When others should do a round of applause, If you are a brave, heroic veteran, You fight for America until the end, Let’s stand up and cheer in thankfulness and praise, For the veterans that saved us in so many ways! Now, think about this poem and its meaning. Don’t use your brain- try to think with your heart. The veterans that are here before us today are a very, very small portion of American veterans that are living today. There were veterans centuries ago- the number of veterans is uncountable. There are millions and billions of veterans that fought for the U.S. A lot of them lost their lives in battle. All of them had to say good-bye to their families at some point. Many people would agree that one day’s remembrence isn’t at all close to how long it should be. There are veterans in the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard. Their schedule is unpredictable- they don’t know when they’re going to be needed, day or night. Sometimes it doesn’t even matter if they’re sick- they always have to be alert. So, we should always remember the veterans that served us and our country. Whenever you pass by a veteran, even if it is brief, remember to say “Thank You”. To all the veterans that are here before us right now, thank you. Thank you for fighting for us, thank you for standing up for what is right, thank you for taking risks that involve your life and loved ones, and thank you for coming here.
