Trails West! celebrates its 20th year
B
ill Clinton was president, the first Beanie Baby was released and “Jurassic Park” was a hit at theaters. The year was 1993, and in St. Joseph, residents attended their first Trails West! festival.
This year, the Allied Arts Council is proud to present, “Trails West! — Celebrating 20 Years of Arts and Entertainment” Aug. 17 to 19 in Civic Center Park. Twenty years ago, the stars aligned to create Trails West!. 1993 was the 150th birthday of St. Joseph, and Mayor Glenda Kelly wanted the city to celebrate. The Allied Arts Council had set a goal to create an arts festival, and luckily for St. Joseph, Karen Graves had moved to town. “When I moved here 21 years ago, I was surprised that there wasn’t an annual arts festival,” said Trails West! founder Graves. Graves had experience starting an arts festival in Salina, Kan., and the Allied Arts Council received a Missouri Arts Council grant, which paid for about 20 percent of the festival’s costs that first year. “Time was short and fundraising was huge,” Graves said. With the support of volunteers and sponsors, Trails West! was on its way. But, the Great Flood of 1993 almost caused the festival to be canceled before it even began. “We thought, ‘Maybe we shouldn’t be planning a party?’” she said. But the committee pushed onward with an August date, which turned out perfectly with the receding of floodwaters. “Everyone was so ready to celebrate,” Ms. Graves said. And, for the 20 years that have followed, St. Joseph has continued to celebrate artistry and the city’s unique cultural heritage with Trails West! in August. The unique blend of performing and visual arts has grown since 1993, creating more than a $1 million economic impact in 2011. During the past 19 years, Trails West! has received several awards for Best Festival. Teresa Fankhauser, in her seventh year as executive director of the Allied Arts Council, comments on her role in Trails West! over the years. “I am extremely excited to be a part of the 20th year of Trails West!. I am lucky enough to have been a part of the festival over the years as a volunteer in the beginning, and now a member of the Allied Arts Council’s staff and director of the Festival. I am proud to have a role in putting on this

Every year, community-minded volunteers and staff spend tireless hours preparing for the funfilled festival, knowing that their hard work will pay off in a big way the weekend of the event. Main stage acts like Taylor Swift, The Band Perry, Lee Ann Womack, Grand Funk Railroad and Blood, Sweat & Tears have helped make the festival a must-see for area residents. Planners spread talent throughout the weekend and feature up-and-coming performers, as well as bands that play songs everyone can hum along to, Ms. Graves said. This year’s main stage offers Uncle Kracker, Hunter Hayes, Tower of Power, Head East and Brian Howe of Bad Company. While enjoying the entertainment and taking in the visual arts, indulge in delicious festival foods of all sorts. Festival dining rivals any state or street fair. It offers everything from handmade onion

blossoms, freshly fried funnel cakes and giant turkey legs to just about any fried delicacy you can imagine. The variety of vendors will please the pickiest eater. Wash these mouthwatering treats down with an assortment of beverages ranging from freshly squeezed lemonade to a frosty brew at the beer garden. The visual arts are a vital part of the event. Painter Evelyn Jordan-Isaacs has participated in every Trails West! festival so far. “I think Trails West! has been great for the community because it brings arts to the people,” said the 83-year-old St. Joseph resident. “I can remember the first festival. It was a happy time.” She said she has built a good clientele that comes to see her every year in her booth. “I look forward to it every year, it just gets better and better,” she said. This year, the fine arts booths will be located on the northeast side of the festival, and craft booths will be nestled on northwest side of the grounds. The finest workmanship can be seen within the different art booths at the Trails West!. Ms. Jordan-Isaacs also complimented the fine musicians, craftsmen and culinary artists that make the event such a success. A program of the Allied Arts Council, the festival is coordinated by a volunteer steering committee and receives financial assistance from the St. Joseph Convention and Visitors Bureau, the City of St. Joseph and the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency. Admission to the festival is by souvenir button or 2012 Trails West! T-shirt. The buttons, good for admission to all three days of the festival, are on sale now for $7. They will be $10 at the festival gates. Guests 12 and younger are free when accompanied by an adult. Purchase your festival buttons at the Allied Arts Council office, your local bank, or at one of the many local businesses listed on the Trails West! website, www.trailswest.org.

Dancers from the Dance Arts Center orchestrated a flash mob last year at Trails West!.
Hosting more than 20 fine artists and 20 crafters, three stages of entertainment, many re-enactors and new food, Trails West! creates an atmosphere of fun for everyone. However, this fun all comes with the mission of bringing the arts to the people and the people to the arts. This year the festival welcomes back 20-year veteran Evelyn Jordan-Isaacs of St. Joseph. Jordan-Isaacs has been a fine artist every year of the festival, specializing in pastels and oil paintings. Other local fine artists this year are Mary Korneman, Tom Swafford, Patricia Harding and Jeff Waggoner. Waggoner of Absent Art, creates beautiful pieces from wood. Waggoner mostly uses birch, which he transforms into modern looks by carving the wood to create an absence of space that reflects different shades and different lights. In the fine arts area, visitors will experience this year’s Artist in Action, Ann Holley from Longmont, Colo. Holley brings the ProtoHaus, which is a tiny dwelling of 125 square feet, to examine what people need to live in motion. Visitors can use their creativity to develop their own tiny house floor plans, prompting them to think about what is necessary. The fine art area also becomes home for the weekend to more than 20 fine artists displaying their works of jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, photography and paintings as well as many other favorites. On the west side of the festival, more than 20 folk artists set up camp for the weekend. Local Please see PAGE 9

Returning again this year is Keith Gregory with Kodiak Mountain Saw Works who creates wooden sculptures right before your eyes on festival grounds. CD & LL Enterprises brings its granite décor, such as candles and lazy susans, all with their own unique style. Of course the festival would not be the same without food vendors from all over the country. New to the festival this year is Mediterranean Foods. Mediterranean Foods has quite the spread to make your mouth water with a Mediterranean sampler, Greek sampler, shish kabobs and many other options. Also new this year is the Primal Knead, which brings a wood-fired grill that bakes the perfect pizza. Some have that sweet tooth that needs filled and Cappuccino Connections has just the right concoctions of chocolate-covered cheesecake, frozen cappuccinos and fruit freezers to help fix that.
Don’t forget to stay hydrated. Stop by one of the pop tents sponsored by 7UP, the Budweiser Mobile Bar, the Beer Garden or the Trails West! Bistro to quench your thirst. New to the beer garden this year are souvenir Trails West! beer mugs. The Trails West! Bistro is open from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday with wine and cheese pairings from 5 to 7 p.m.; from 2 to 10 p.m. Saturday with food and wine pairings from 4 to 7 p.m.; and from noon to 10 p.m. Sunday for Sangria Sunday.
Children’s art
The children’s art area offers children of all ages opportunities to make different crafts and to participate in many activities. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, children will be able to create their own sand art masterpiece. On Saturday, Lowe’s brings its “Let’s Grow Together” workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The children’s art area also offers airbrush tattoos or face painting so that the kids can show their own artistic expressions. Hours for the Children’s Art area are 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

■ Please do not bring food or drink on to the grounds — food vendors on the grounds offer a wide variety of tasty options. If you wish to bring your own food, a picnic area is available for your use on the grounds of the Pony Express Monument between Frederick Avenue and Francis Street. ■ Blankets and chairs must be removed each evening of the festival. Following each night’s closing act, festival staff remove all blankets, chairs, etc., from the park. These items are turned in to the lost and found located at the volunteer check in on the northeast side of festival grounds. ■ Just a tip — BRING YOUR BAG CHAIRS! Seating is limited, and there are so many different venues to see you’ll want the mobility that having your own chair will bring. ■ When packing for the festival, drop trash in your own trash bag, and help us to leave the festival grounds in great shape. Please don’t drop trash on the ground or in our neighbors’ streets. ■ Seating at the festival is NOT reserved. Be aware that arriving early for the headline entertainment doesn’t guarantee a front-row seat. Also, note that most audience members prefer to stand during the concert. ■ All guests who purchase alcohol must wear a festival-supplied wristband. ■ Cans or bottles may NOT be brought into the park.
■ City ordinances prohibit guests from leaving the park (or any liquor-by-thedrink establishment) with an open container of alcohol.
