Trails West! shares ‘heART for the City’

The third weekend in August the St. Joseph community truly comes together each year at Trails West!. We come for so many reasons: fine art, crafts, root beer, diverse entertainment, family fun and much more. Trails West! has been a part of our community for many years, and each new generation shows their “heART for the City.” The 23rd year holds a special place for this year’s husband and wife Trails West! co-chairs Jeremy and Shannen White. “We have heart for our community and want others to feel the same way. St. Joseph is such a special place to live and has so much to offer. The community is strong and filled with passion. Trails West! pulls such a diverse audience. Let’s band together and make St. Joseph an even stronger community. We are a city with passion, talent and heart. We all have a ‘heART for the City.’” More than 80 artwork submissions that embodied the theme were submitted, but the one that stood out was Ryan Sowers’ piece. Sowers is a Kansas City, Mo.-based artist and illustrator who “enjoys old bicycles, good sandwiches and good adventures with friends.” He grew up right outside Wichita, Kan., and attended the University of Kansas, where he received a degree in illustration and art history. “I created the ‘heART for the City’ illustration by examining the personality and history contained within the buildings and landmarks of St. Joseph,” Sowers says. “I chose a simplified hand-drawn quality to evoke the idea of each building and place. Through this style, I wanted to create the feeling that while these places and structures are important to the overall character of the city, what really matters is the people and memories we associate with them,” Join with us by showing your “heART for the City,” at this year’s festival Aug. 21 through 23 at Civic Center Park in St. Joseph.

Starship featuring Mickey Thomas

Charlie Daniels Band

Trails West! keeps things entertaining Main Stage

“Get ready to sing along,” says Jeremy White, co-chair of the Trails West! festival with his wife, Shannen. “You will know these artists and these songs. It’s a diverse lineup that holds on to the tradition of Trails West!” Main stage acts include rock bands Resurrection — A Journey Tribute Band, and 1980s favorite Starship featuring Mickey Thomas, country music star Kelsea Ballerini, country music legend The Charlie Daniels Band, and contemporary Christian band Sanctus Real. Returning to Trails West! Friday, Aug. 21, on a new stage is Resurrection — A Journey Tribute. The band brings the ’80s throwback party big time, faithfully recreating the Steve Perry era of Journey with jaw-dropping results. Composed of musicians who have performed with Journey and written with Steve Perry and featuring a lead singer who astonishes audiences, the group strives to be the Journey tribute by which others are measured. Following Resurrection, one of the most iconic rock bands from the ’80s, recording several of the decade’s biggest anthems, including “We Built This City,” “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now,” and “Sara,” Starship featuring Mickey Thomas joins Trails West! main stage history. Mickey Thomas joined Jefferson Starship in 1979, quickly proving himself when recording the band’s first hit, “Jane.” The band’s most recent album, “Loveless Fascination,” is the group’s first studio record in more than 20 years. Saturday, Aug. 22, Kelsea Ballerini,

named “Country’s Next Queen” by Billboard, opens the main stage with her hits, such as “Love Me Like You Mean It.” The singer and songwriter moved to Nashville at age 15 to chase her dream of becoming a songwriter and signed a publishing deal by 19. Her debut album “Dibs” is the No. 1 most added on country radio nationwide. In June, “Love Me Like You Mean It” topped both the Mediabase and Billboard country airplay charts, landing her a spot alongside only 10 of country music’s leading women. From his Dove Award winning gospel albums to his genre-defining Southern rock anthems and CMA Award-winning country hits, few artists have left a more indelible mark on America’s musical landscape than Charlie Daniels. After forming The Charlie Daniels Band, CDB, the group scored its first hit with “Uneasy Rider.” Since then, Daniels has populated the radio with memorable hits such as “Long Haired Country Boy” and his signature song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia.” On Sunday, Aug. 23, Trails West! brings back the Community Worship

Service. The festival opens on Sunday for just a $2 wristband, which can be purchased at the gates or from local churches. If you already have a Trails West! button or T-shirt that will also get you in. The Rev. Bryan Gregory, and pastors Scott Hawkins and Robert Warren will speak on Sunday with music from the MidCity Excellence Choir. The service will be followed by Christian band Sanctus Real. Sanctus Real is a multiple-Grammy-nominated Christian rock band that has topped the Christian Billboard charts for almost 20 years. Festival attendees will recognize songs like “Beautiful Day,” “Everything About You,” “The Fight Song,” “Forgiven,” “We Need Each Other” and “Lead Me.”

The City Stage also brings back festival favorites such as Maria the Mexican, a hybrid of Mexican folklore and rock, and country band Grindstone Creek. “We’ve got a great combination of local favorites, national touring acts, and a variety of participatory kids programming on the City and Family stages this year,” says Sarah Stockett, entertainment chair for Trails West!. “On our Family Stage, we added a variety of kids’ programming, including audience participation dancing with Mary Ingersoll, music with Tunes of Fun and a family karaoke dance party with Best Sports.”

Something for all tastes at Trails West! The summer breeze brings new arts, crafts and food to Trails West!. Trails West! hosts more than 60 fine artists and crafters, an arts incubator, demonstration artists, children’s art and more than 20 food vendors, providing a unique experience to festival guests. The air is wafting gently through the trees that outline the park. Smoke billows from the four corners to rise triumphantly past City Hall. The white clouds of barbecue dance gently together before wisping away, chased, it would seem by the embers of a brick wood-fired pizza oven, new to the landscape this year and followed closely by the meatball artisans who place meat on a stick so wonderfully that the eyes will delight at the epicurean treats at this year’s Trails West! celebration. Come enjoy the festivities and dine on smoked ribs, turkey legs, funnel cakes, deep-fried surprises, craft beer, and all in the center of town. Onestop shopping — burgers, shaved ice, Mexican and Mediterranean cuisine, homemade root beer, your palate will want to try it all And why not? It will be another year before you get to dive into the sensory overload that is waiting for you. All food vendors accept cash this year. When grabbing a craft beer, wine, sangria, or beer, purchase a beer ticket with your proper ID right outside the beer tents. Bon appetit! As you weave through the festival foods, step into the fine art and folk art areas. Have you ever wanted to know how a wooden pen is created, or how puzzle pieces are so perfectly formed? The St. Joseph Woodworkers Guild is demonstrating all different types of woodworking art throughout the weekend in a tent by the dining tent. Also demonstrating this year is the

Crossing Outreach Ministry in the folk art area. The Crossing started three years ago in the inner-city area of St. Joseph. Working to meet the needs and help transform people’s lives in our community, the group provides several programs such as Rags to Riches, and a tire planter project, which will be at the festival. With the Rags to Riches program, participants create beautiful rag rugs and rag bags made on a loom. Demonstrators will be there all weekend to show off this true art form. “In My Second Life” forms bracelets, necklaces, rings and earrings into new pieces from vintage pieces in the folk art area. The jewelry is created from old watch parts, typewriter keys and old beads into one-of-a-kind pieces. Are you in love with essential oils? Majikah Perfumery is back again this year in their almost gypsy-like wagon with more than 450 original recipes of essential oil perfumes. Even if you aren’t in love with what you see, you can create your own personal scent. Discover Art is new in the fine arts area with wheel-thrown and handbuilt pottery pieces. Each piece is original and hand-carved with rich textures and patterns. Need a reason to love these pieces more? All the work is dishwasher and food safe. The fine art area also includes unique acrylic screen print artist Jeremy Morton of Kansas City. He is alongside many returning favorites and emerging artists in the arts incubator. The arts incubator provides emerging artists a space to showcase their talents to a diverse crowd, helping further their creative endeavors. For a full list of fine artists, folk artists, and food vendors at this year’s festival, please visit www.trailswest.org.

The Family Stage also brings back favorites like T. Texas Terry with his high energy, wild and crazy fun-loving cowboy comedy, and Parasol Puppets. The Family Stage also introduces Tunes of Fun on Saturday, which is a “music class” allowing children to sing, dance, march, jump, skip, play and have fun! For a full entertainment lineup with bands, dates, and times please visit www.trailswest.org.

Party.” Bring your whole family with your dancing clothes on, because we are having a family dance party. If you can’t make it that night, bring your children Saturday morning for a children’s interactive dance session led by Inspirations Dance Studio. This is the perfect opportunity to let your kids run off energy, while learning some new dance moves.

Unleash your little artist

Bring your child to the children’s art area, and let him or her create a piece of art. The children’s art area has activities for preschool through sixth grade, ranging from pasta jewelry and wind chimes to animal clothes pins. Of course, the kids’ favorite pots and pans will be available, turning household items into musical instruments. The Remington Nature Center has an art project for children with the Trails West! theme, “heART for the City.” Heart necklaces with a map of St. Joseph can be decorated the way children want. Bring your children and let them express their inner artist at this year’s children’s arts area. Also following this year’s theme, the Girls Scouts are bringing an interactive art project that allows children to show their creative abilities on Saturday, Aug. 22, and Sunday, Aug. 23. On Saturday, Home Depot also brings back make-and-take projects teaching children new art forms.

Returning to the festival this year are the Trails West! children’s pony races. The pony races include stick ponies and races running from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday. The stick ponies are made from pool noodles to make the activity as safe as possible for children. Don’t miss out on this fun activity for your children. This year the children’s art committee held an artwork competition for children. Children up to sixth grade were asked to create a piece of art that portrayed this year’s theme “heART for the City.” The competition resulted in more than 35 submitted art pieces. Did your child participate, or do you just want to see the results? The awards ceremony for the contest is at 1 p.m. Aug. 22 in the children’s art area. All are invited! Hours for the Children’s Art area are 5 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 21; 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22; and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 23. Parents need to stay with children 10 and younger.

Create art in action

This year’s Artist in Action piece invites you to show your “heART for the City.” All are invited to participate with the project by writing down what it is that you love about St. Joseph or Trails West!. The paper is then rolled up and inserted into a giant wire heart. At the end of Trails West!, the once-empty heart will be filled with reasons why we love our hometown and/or Trails West!. The end result will look like one giant heart. Everyone comes to the festival for

all sorts of reasons. Perhaps you are someone who likes to walk around and look at art, someone who enjoys the entertainment or someone who brings your family to try different food and create something in the children’s art area. Whatever your reason, you help support the growing arts in St. Joseph. Trails West! loves to see the love from the community all in one place, so be sure to stop by our Artist in Action area and be a part of “heART for the City.”
