FREEDOM FRE FREE REEEDOM IS IS NOT NOT

By: Kelly Strong

I watched the flag pass by one day. It fluttered in the breeze. A young Marine saluted it, and then he stood at ease. I looked at him in uniform So young, so tall, so proud, He’d stand out in any crowd. I thought how many men like him Had fallen through the years. How many died on foreign soil? How many mothers’ tears? How many pilots’ planes shot down? How many died at sea? How many foxholes were soldiers’ graves? No, freedom isn’t free. I heard the sound of TAPS one night, When everything was still I listened to the bugler play And felt a sudden chill. I wondered just how many times That TAPS had meant “Amen,” When a flag had draped a coffin Of a brother or a friend. I thought of all the children, Of the mothers and the wives, Of fathers, sons and husbands With interrupted lives. I thought about a graveyard At the bottom of the sea Of unmarked graves in Arlington. No, freedom isn’t free.

With our deep gratitude, CBIZ honors those Americans called in service to our country to guard our security, protect our freedoms, and represent us to the world. May God protect those actively at duty, and bless the souls of the fallen.

It is our honor to recognize our local CBIZ employees who have served Jason Anderson, Sergeant USMC Andy Burnham, Corporal USMC 1371 Combat Engineer Larry Huddleston, Specialist 5th Class US Army, Viet Nam Jim Morgan, Sergeant USMC

20 Salute To Veterans November 11, 2010

Joining the military was the farthest thing from his mind when he was growing up on a farm at Agency, Mo. Today at age 45, Air Force Master Sgt. retired David Mark Kelsey looks back on it as one of the best moves he ever made. A 1983 graduate of East Buchanan High School, Gower, Mo., he says after graduation he enrolled in a technical school and toyed with the idea of becoming an electronics technician. “But that was too expensive, so I quit and went to work. Then I met my wife (Helen) and we got married in 1985. I was working at a country club, and my wife says, ‘ You need to do something different.’ So, I signed up with the Air Force in December of 1987.” He points out that he never had any strong leaning toward joining the military and no family ties. His parents, David and Sherrill still Master Sgt. retired David Mark Kelsey reside in Agency. “When I was growing up you farmed and that’s what we did, and alot of friends did too. And some friends went off to college to get an education, but I wanted to do something different. “I felt like I needed to do it at the time because I was young and needed a job, and it (the military) had good benefits and training.” “Once I got into it,” he continues. “I knew it was something I wanted to do. I really enjoyed the time I’ve spent in the military, especially the nice places I got to visit.” He adds, “I was stationed out of Italy and Venice is my favorite city. It really is beautiful.” The father of three children and two grandchildren notes that residing abroad was a good learning experience for his then young children, daughter Josline; and sons, Joshua and Jordan. “My boys played sports at the military schools with kids from such places as the Netherlands and Belgium. They really had a good time.” His son, Joshua, who attends a university in Las Vegas, Nev., plans to follow in his father’s footsteps and join the Air Force after graduation. During Mr. Kelsey’s 23 years of serving his country, the airman had a tour of duty in the Balkans (Kosovo), Kuwait and Iraq, but was mainly stationed in the States. His aircraft duties included handling logistics problems, maintenance practice improvements and design improvements of the defensive avionics system. Although he was never involved in the fighting and was never wounded, he did experience the affects of war. “While in the places where there was fighting, it was very unnerving. You tried to sleep, but you couldn’t sleep for the daily mortar and rockets, and sirens going off.” But he says the hardest aspect of military life for him was “being away from my family.” “I tried to keep in touch to let them know I was alright. But my wife had to be mommy and daddy, and that’s tough on a family.” “I give my wife alot of credit for taking over,” he adds. During his career, he was honored with several awards, including the Airman Medal for heroism in 1996. The incident took place in Glendale, Ariz., during a fierce storm with 100 miles per hour winds when he rescued a woman who was trapped in her car when an electrical line still energized with 12,000 volts fell on it. Minutes later the car burst into flames and was destroyed. Although this wasn’t military related, the Air Force felt he displayed exceptional courage in saving a life. All these years of military life came to a close on Oct. 8 in a retirement ceremony at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, S.D. His official retirement date is Jan. 1, 2011. But Mr. Kelsey will still have ties to the military through his new position as senior intergraded logistics specialist with ITT Corp. in Warner Robins, Ga., which specializes in military and civilian projects. His area of expertise will be in the defense end. He will be calling Perry, Ga., home. Landing this civilian job had alot to do with his training and experience in the military he points out. He says he would highly recommend joining the military. “I think, especially the way some kids are today, it would give them discipline and structure, and instill patriotism in them for their country. “It’s a hard thing to hear and see people who don’t like the military,” he continues, “and they protest and say ugly things. We’re over there fighting for them to have the freedom to say what they want. They take that freedom for granted. The guys are just trying to do their jobs and spending time away from their families, and serving in places that are not very nice, just so they can have that freedom.”

It was the Soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the Soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It's the Soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the Soldier who salutes the flag, serves under the flag and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who gives the protester the right to burn the flag.
