2019/2020 GRADUATES
Like many of the young adults we serve, this age was marked by significant growth and redirection. NPower spent its late teen years learning, adapting, and evolving. When we share stories of our students and alumni, we often lean into the individual’s ability to manage change. Transitions can be both challenging and exhilarating – for our students and for NPower as an organization – and filled with opportunities for continuous learning and improvement. 2019 was as a year of incredible growth. We increased the number of students served, added advanced cybersecurity programs in key locations, and expanded our national footprint to reach more deserving individuals eager to start their technology careers. This year of expansion was not without its acute learnings. We recognized a pointed need to strengthen our foundation to support the operational excellence we are known for.
We quickly joined together (virtually) as an organization to move our mission forward in an unprecedented time. The entire NPower workforce began working remotely and we saw an increase in productivity on all fronts. Our appreciation for virtual meeting technology took on a new dimension and we have not looked back. Led by NPower’s National Instructors Institute, we successfully transitioned our classrooms into virtual learning environments for all students mid-cohort. All NPower programs remained fully operational throughout this immense change. In July 2020, our first virtual cohort of 350 proud and resilient NPower students stood on a virtual stage and graduated to begin their tech career journeys.

All NPower programs remained fully operational throughout this immense change. In July 2020, 350 proud and resilient NPower students stood on a virtual stage and graduated to begin their tech career journeys. We have all been tested beyond measure. From this, we are stronger, smarter and grounded in empathy and gratitude. Our organization will continue to grow and we cannot do this work alone. Thank you to those of you who have hired our students, hosted an intern, informed our curriculum, provided social service support, mentored a student or funded our expansion. If we don’t make it happen, we let it happen. Bertina Ceccarelli Chief Executive Officer NPower
LETTER FROM BERTINA CECCARELLI
ON NOVEMBER 15, 2020
2020 began on a self-reflective and foundation-focused note. We were digging deeper to build an even stronger program. In January, NPower kicked off a powerful project with Stand Together and Notre Dame's Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities (LEO) to evaluate the efficacy of our signature Tech Fundamentals program with a randomized control study. The work had already begun when the global COVID-19 pandemic disrupted everything we know and redefined how we live, work, learn and support our communities.

which has directly impacted the underserved communities we serve across the country. When we look ahead to the many students we will train and support, the economic impact is exponential and will continue to build. We are proud to be part of the solution narrowing the digital divide, addressing equity in the technology industry, and transforming the lives of those who need us the most.

VETERAN SUPPORT SPOTLIGHT UPSKILLING OUR HEROES TO BUILD A DIVERSE TECH PIPELINE
2019 - 2020 ANNUAL REPORT
We have been struck by the immense challenges men and women face after leaving military service:
8
›
Over two-thirds report difficulties adjusting to civilian life emotionally
› ›
Nearly 8 in 10 leave the military without job prospects
›
Women, minorities and younger veterans report having the most trouble transitioning to quality educational institutions and rewarding careers.
More than 40% of service members leave the military without having identified permanent housing
NPower is part of an ecosystem focused on reversing these trends and assuring successful reintegration for veterans and their families through quality employment and job training. 15% of NPower staff around the country are veterans, so we know firsthand that veterans offer tremendous value to the workforce. We are honored to have so many of our corporate partners share this same commitment to create opportunities for those who have served.
We remain steadfast in our commitment to make the veteran transition to civilian tech careers as successful as possible. For the last 10 years, we have been providing free technology upskilling, professional development, social service support and job placement services to over 1,500 of our country’s veterans and their spouses around the country.
After almost seven years in the U.S. Army, I had the opportunity to pursue a new path in the Silicon Valley Area and I couldn’t have done it without NPower. The hard work of learning, networking, and targeted resume building made a world of difference. The tools I gained along with the support of the NPower staff helped me to successfully launch my career in IT.
TERRY MARTIN
NPower California | Tech Fundamentals Spring 2020 IT Apprentice, Google
Arizona native and 7-year U.S. Army Veteran Terry Martin Jr. was stationed in Silicon Valley, when he discovered NPower. Terry excelled in the program and worked diligently to sharpen his skill sets. With nearly perfect attendance, only missing a few days to transition out of the Army and attend Google interviews, his dedication paid off in the form of a full-time position with Google as an IT apprentice. Terry was at a crossroads in his career and accredits NPower for the successful path he currently is on today. While he discovered the importance of technology on his own, it was the NPower program which installed a rich development of professional skills such as networking and targeted resume building that has made the difference in his tech journey.

Now, Anthony is working as a Project Coordinator for World Wide Technology through Citi’s U.S. Department of Labor Registered Apprenticeship Program and is on the path to advancing as a tech professional.
What sets the NPower program apart from many other programs is the emphasis on professional development and networking. The opportunity to connect with current and former students as well as prospective employers is invaluable in today’s competitive employment market.

What began as a program goal to increase the number of young women enrolled in our programs to 40% by 2022 and increase the representation of women among our teaching staff to 40% by 2020, has become a larger movement. The 40 by 22 initiative was born out of seeing the dramatic imbalance of women of color in tech and we have seen the impact in incredible ways.

In one short week, the national Instructors Institutes successfully transitioned our classrooms into virtual learning environments for all students mid-cohort. The digital divide posed a true challenge and we deployed devices and internet access through hotspot to all students in need. NPower employees across the country began working from home. We found productivity increase and in some instances, the remote working environment brought people closer together than before.
We adapted our curriculum to address the technology needs experienced by remote workforce, including: ›
Virtual troubleshooting
›
Computer network segmentation

›
Web-based email support

Social support took on a new dimension during the pandemic. Thanks to the NPower social support managers in each region, we offered “quarantine support groups” as well as one-onone virtual sessions to encourage students to share their feelings and find strength and support in their community. Other managers offer mindful meditation sessions to address anxiety and other effects of self-isolation. NPower partners from around the country showed tremendous support, offering their time, technology and encouragement to our students. We realized that many of our students had been affected by events related to the pandemic and racial unrest so we incorporated trauma-informed strategies into our training to spot students with special needs and work proactively to meet them.
